Combining the durability of acrylics with the chemical resistance of epoxies, MAINCOTE™ AEH Resin is a novel hybrid technology for two-component (2K) concrete coatings that offers ultra-low VOC capability while lengthening pot life and accelerating dry/cure time.

Features and Benefits• < 50 g/L VOC capable• Longer pot life (4 – 10 hrs)• Faster dry/cure time and faster hardness development• Good durability and gloss retention

• Greater UV resistance• Excellent chemical resistance• Cold and hot tire pickup resistance• Low viscosities for easy 2K mixing• Manufactured without added solvent

How it Works

Latex+

Liquid Epoxy Imbibed into Acrylic Latex

1. MAINCOTE AEH Hybrid Technology houses epoxy functionality inside acrylic latex particles. 2. In the wet phase, the acrylic latex acts as a barrier between the hardener and the epoxy.3. As the formulated coating comes into contact with air, the water in the formulation evaporates.4. In the absence of water, the hybrid resin and hardener make contact and crosslink.

Applications

• Institutional wall coatings (e.g., schools, hospitals)

• LEED certified buildings with daylighting

• Commercial floors• Residential garage

floors

Tire Pickup ResistanceHigh performance garage floor coatings rely on excellent tire pickup resistance and are evaluated through hot and cold tire resistance testing. The hot tire resistance test simulates situations where a car has been driven and then parked on a wet coated surface. Cold tire resistance testing represents the same situation, but in this case the tire is not at an elevated temperature due to heat being generated while driving on the road. In both hot and cold testing, coatings based on MAINCOTE™ AEH Hybrid Technology showed no evidence of film compression and remained fully adhered to and intact on the concrete block. Neither of the two commercially available coatings tested (see Figure 1 below) showed evidence of film compression; however, both had small regions where the coating failed adhesion at the concrete block interface in the hot tire test. For black tire marking, all three coatings performed similarly.

Early Drying and Cure SpeedFast hardness development can translate to a rapid return-to-service, allowing a coated floor to be re-opened to foot traffic or for restocking after shorter downtimes. Two component coatings based on MAINCOTE AEH Hybrid Technology were tested and measured alongside waterborne epoxy systems based on either a liquid epoxy resin or a solid epoxy dispersion for hardness and dry times. Clear and pigmented coating formulations based on MAINCOTE AEH Technology ranked at or near the top in terms of Konig hardness and offered notable improvement in low temperature, dry-to-touch and dry-through times.Table 1. Pot LifeMAINCOTE AEH Hybrid Technology offers a pot life of 4-10 hours compared to liquid epoxy systems and waterborne epoxy dispersions, which typically exhibit a 2-3 hour pot life.Figure 2. Evaluation of pot life as determined by viscosity and gloss.

UV ResistanceCommon epoxy systems typically degrade under exposure to UV radiation, exhibiting chalking and dramatic gloss reduction. In accelerated UV exposure testing over concrete substrates, a coating formulation made with MAINCOTE™ AEH Hybrid Technology demonstrated inherently better resistance to gloss change under UV radiation.Performance SummaryMAINCOTE AEH Acrylic Epoxy Hybrid Technology has demonstrated excellent performance in concrete enamel coatings across a range of critical properties, while offering key advantages relative to commercially available products, including:

• Ultra-low VOC• Improved UV durability, resistance to yellowing and gloss

retention• Up to 50% faster dry time under ambient temperatures• Film formation at lower temperatures (under 50°F)
