We are pleased that Michael has now consigned the balance of this interesting collection. This "new" material includes many items to and from the German States and other parts of Europe, Asia and more. Also included are early pre-stamp covers and several exceptional frankings. The addressee, James Charles White, was born at Jaffna in Ceylon. He arrived in NSW on 15.8.1830 per "Ceylon".He soon obtained a position as Superintendent of Works for the Australian Agricultural Co at Port Stephens. He diedaboard the "Wairarapa" which was wrecked in 1894 off Great Barrier Island, New Zealand.

Lot 374GREAT BRITAIN - ENGLAND: 1824 lengthy & fascinating entire signed "Fra Atkinson", to London endorsed "PerAllies/Capt Kirton/Jan 19 1824" with a faint but legible strike of the small undated 'HOBART/TOWN' handstamp,step-boxed 'SHIP LETTER/FALMOUTH' h/s & rated "3/4" being 1/4d for an inwards double shipletter + 2/- mileageto London. A NSW Order in Council of 19/10/1822 required that all mail "...be stamped with the Mark of the Townfrom which it goes" but no outgoing postal rate was endorsed as the postage paid was a perquisite of the postmaster.Ex Eugene Tinsley (1990) & Brian Peace: acquired at the Prestige auction of 27.7.2009 for $1150.

The writer speaks of "...the intention of establishing a Bank here upon the same principals as the one at Sidney andhaving received Sir Thomas Brisbane's approval...all the Dollars have disappeared and likewise all the PaperCurrency...leaving us nothing but a trash currency...it has had the effect of lowering the prices of mostarticles...Dollars have disappeared...and i think the Captains of Ships have taken them away...have not sufficient inthe Treasury Funds as is wanted to pay the Salaries & orders from the Police Fund..." Some sources state the Bankof Van Diemen's Landwas established in 1823 but this letter suggests it was early in 1824, as stated by GraemePetterwood in "Tasmanian Tokens Revisited".

Ex Lot 375- 1831 OHMS outer endorsed "Col Serys Office/Sydney NS Wales/25 July 1831", to Lincolnshire rated "2/6" with ' P/DE15/1831' & Maltese Cross 'CH/15DE1831/ X ' (Charing Cross?) b/s in red, superb four-pointed "star" postalinspector's h/s in red, minor faults & a repaired tear at the top. With original enclosure - very fine condition - signed by"Alexr McLeay" advising that the convict Thomas Nott - transported in 1815 - is now a schoolteacher in Sydney.

Alexander Macleay arrived in Sydney in January 1826, as Colonial Secretary to the new Governor Sir RichardDarling. He was a capable administrator & held numerous committee & board positions. He became a significantlandholder, including a grant of 54 acres at Elizabeth Bay!! He also did his bit to populate the new colony, siring 17children! (2 items)

Lot 376- 1842 entire headed "Adelaide July 4th 1842" & signed "Thos Q Stow", to the Congregational Library in London witha largely very fine strike of the huge '[crown]/GENERAL POST OFFICE/ADELAIDE/4JY4/1842' datestamp across theflap, partial London arrival b/s of 7JA7/1843 (?) & rated "8d" for an inward shipletter, stain on the address panel.

Thomas Quinton Stow was a Congregational Church minister who arrived in Adelaide in -.10.1837. Stow wasresponsible for forming many new churches, and fostering good relations with other denominations. Stow MemorialChurch in Flinders Street Adelaide is named after him. He speaks of the economic depression - "...circumstanceshave still been sinking sinking..." - but states "...I trust things will begin to mend when the wool comes in , followed upby the harvest which is likely to be very extensive..."

Lot 377- 1843 (Apr 17) entire letter headed "Australind" & signed "WPearce Clifton", to Yorkshire "p Phantom to Mauritius"(endorsed within) light but fine strike of the rare octagonal 'SHIP LETTER/("April") [crown] ("26")/WESTERNAUSTRALIA/PAID' handstamp of Bunbury (#PA SL2; ERD & the only example recorded in black), very fine boxed'CALCUTTA/GPO/SHIPLETTER' & octagonal '26NO43/LIVERPOOL/SHIP' backstamps, some soiling/staining that apaper conservator could significantly improve. The earlier of only two recorded covers bearing the Ship Letterh/s, the other being from five years later & in red. Carried per "Phantom", departed Port Leschenault (later Bunbury)on 20.4.1843 directly for Mauritius. Ex Dr Cecil Walkley. [William Pearce Clifton arrived -3.1841 on the "Parkfield". In1846 he was appointed magistrate &, in -12.1847, helped survey the road from Bunbury to Williams]

Dr Cecil Walkley's exceptional "Postal History of Western Australia" was sold by Prestige Philately on 27.11.2010.The collection included the most extensive array of prestamp covers ever to appear at auction. Of the remarkabletotal of 61 such items, 25 - including the majority of the most important covers/letters - are now off the market, havingbeen acquired by the State Library of Western Australia. This regrettable situation makes the few major itemsremaining in private hands of even greater significance, and value, than was previously the case.

Lot 378- 1847 lengthy cross-written entire letter headed "Melbourne 7th April 1847" & signed "Thomas Lowe", to Londonendorsed "From No 1998 Corporal Thomas Lowe 58th Regt" & countersigned by Captain Murray (?) at lower-left,rated "1" in red for a soldier's or sailor's letter, light 'SHIP LETTER/[crown]/AP 10/1847/MELBOURNE' d/s in red onthe flap, London arrival b/s in red across the flap & rated "2" for an incoming soldier's letter, overall soiling.A verysignificant item, being one of only three Imperial soldiers' letters recorded from Victoria, and the only onefrom the Port Phillip District period. The writer states "...I have come from New Zealand after a long Fatigue...there is about 400 of our Regiment in NewZealand yet...[Melbourne] is called the Best Place in the Colony the People are all Emigrants and very friendly...thereare 100 of us here...I expect soon to be made a Sergeant as there is a great many Killed and Wounded..."

[The rate was 3d to Hong Kong but was unpaid on to destination so rated on arrival "2/3" for an incomingshipletter via Marseilles. "Australia Felix" (= happy southern land) was a name given by the explorer Major Thomas Mitchell in 1836 to thewestern section of the Port Phillip District (Victoria). This is the only usage of the name we have seen in respect ofSouth Australia.

NSW/Vic "Riverina Covers" are relatively common with 58recorded: see "Sydney Views" (Aug 2004 & May 2005). However, only a very few similar NSW/SA combinationcovers are recorded.

Lot 397- 1835 entire letter from Dumbartonshire headed "Noblestown Oct 1st 1835" to Hobart from the addressee's uncle,carried per favor to Hobart where rated "2" in black but with no other postal markings, some staining. Ex RodMoreton. [It is believed that the addressee, William Cumming, was transported in 1830 & was pardoned in 1848.Certainly Thomas Hood, with whom Cumming was boarding, was a convict, having been convicted in 1831 &arriving in Hobart 14.2.1832 aboard the convict transport "Elizabeth III". Hood received his conditional pardon on29.3.1838]

The letter states: "...I intend to send this letter with Mrs Shaw's sister by the Margaret Graham Bark...", which arrivedat Hobart 3.3.1836.

Lot 399- 1856 (Jan 30) double-rate entire letter to Scotland "Per Hellespont/via Singapore" with Woodblock 6d x2 (3½ orfull margins) tied by superb BN '1' of Melbourne (b/s), London transit b/s of 4MY4/1856 where smudged'MORE/TO/PAY' h/s & mss "8" applied to the face, superb Edinburgh arrival b/s in red. Carried per "Hellespont",departed 18.2.1856, via the Indian Ocean & arrived Singapore 16.3.1856; then per P&O Norna" to Galle; "Bombay"to Suez; & "Pera", arriving Southampton 4.5.1856.

During the Crimean War many P&O ships were pressed into naval service. Mail services became infrequent & reliantupon private shipping. The "Hellespont" was a coastal steamer that was sent to Singapore to be sold. This is afamous voyage, from which little surviving mail is recorded. Colin Tabeart at page 168 states "...the one letter seenvia Southampton - was stamped at London on 5 May". However, this cover is paid at double the via Southamptonrate & was in Edinburgh by the 5th, proving the mail arrived at Southampton no later than 4/5/1856, as evidenced bythe London backstamp.

The writer (signature illegible) speaks of "our leaving Port MacQuarie [to]...within 30 miles of Parramatta" & ofassisting a minister of religion to leave the UK for NSW as a missionary where "...he could get Board & lodging at£50 or 60 per Annum...we want godly men in the colony". The weather is a problem: "...We are suffering for want ofrain never was the colony in a more deplorable state..."

Lot 410- 1841 OHMS usage of Mrs Muir illustrated lettersheet ("St Jean d'Acre/after the Battle") headed "HMS Howe MaltaJuly 13th 1841" with lengthy letter, to "John Septs Roe/Surveyor-General/Swan River/Western Australia" rated "6"in red for the private shipletter rate, with curved 'PAID/MALTA' (Proud #PD2; recorded only to 26.9.1839, making thisthe LRD by almost 2 years) partly overstruck by very fine crowned-oval 'GENERAL POST OFFICE/OC23/1841/CAPE OF GOOD HOPE' datestamp, professionally repaired along vertical split & a little soiled. A very rare &desirable usage to a most unusual destination. Also absent from Ben Palmer' Census. [Endorsed "Via Bombay" butthe Cape Town marking suggests it went all the way by sea through the Straits of Gibraltar, then round the Cape]

John Septimus Rowe arrived at Sydney in 1817, tasked with completing the circumnavigation survey of Australiaundertaken by Matthew Flinders that had left much of the north & west coasts unchartered. After returning to Englandin 1827, Roe was appointed Surveyor-General of the new Swan River Settlement & arrived there aboard the"Parmelia" in 1829, where his first child was one of the first born at the settlement. From the beginning he was a keyplayer in the development of Western Australia. In addition to his coastal surveys, Roe undertook 16 inlandexplorations & has been called "The Father of Australian Exploration".

[The letter refers to the wreck of the "Isabella" at Flinders Island,recovery & advertising of the mails, & a regulation that they could be forwarded only by a ship going directly toEngland (around the Cape); also to a scheme - that obviously failed - to get this letter to its destination quicker byway of Torres Strait, Soerabaja and India]

An extraordinary destination, to an important personage.BPA Certificate (2010).

Mustafa Fazl Pasha was an Egyptian prince who was first in line to succeed his brother. However, in 1866, hisbrother persuaded the Ottoman authorities to change the law of succession in favour of his own son. Mustafa Fazlwent into exile in Paris, from where - as one of the earliest of the "Young Turks", who long preceded Kemal Ataturk -he excoriated the Ottoman Sultan & the Imperial system. Invited to return to Istanbul, he held several importantgovernment positions until 1872. He died in 1875.

Lot 415PAPUA: 1886 cover with embossed "The Argus" (newspaper) on the flap, to Captain Anthony Musgrave at"Granville/British New Guinea" & endorsed "Per SS Victory", with Victorian 6d blue tied by Melbourne duplex ofDE17/86, fine strike of Musgrave's triple-oval 'ASST DEP COMMR/RECEIVED/("14.1.87")/NEW GUINEA' cachet inviolet on the face, minor blemishes. This is the earliest recorded postal cover into British New Guinea & theearlier of only two pre-UPU covers from Victoria in Ben Palmer's Census. Ex Roger Lee. [Illustrated by Roger Lee atpage 4]

With copy of a newspaper notice of 30.4.1885 advising that Burns Philp had been granted a contract to run a monthlymail steamer service between Thursday Island, Port Moresby & East Cape New Guinea for three years. The "Victory"was the first vessel to operate this service. Illustrated by Ben Palmer at page 41, where he states that British NewGuinea was not listed as a destination in the early "Post Office Guides" but that "it obviously shared the same ratesas the other [British] Pacific islands". Captain Musgrave was Assistant Deputy Commissioner at Port Moresby.

[Nikolsk-Ussuriysk (now Ussriysk) is about 50km N or Vladivostok. An onlineresource states there was a POW Camp here only between 1919 & 1921. This card proves the camp was operating3 years earlier]

Lot 423- 1872 mourning cover to Texas USA - an unusual destination - with Victorian DLR 2d (defective) & Laureate 1/- tiedby fine 'BALLAARAT - 5' duplex, London & New York transits in red on the face, a little aged & slightly truncated atright. Ben Palmer's Census #USA #233. [The enclosed letter (repaired with archival tape), from "Robt Gibbs" to hisstep-son tells the addressee that his mother has died of "valvular disease of the heart" despite a doctorrecommending "having blisters on her stomach" (clearly no clue!) & continues "...grief is killing me. Oh I amdesolate...every object is a reminder of my lost love. I had but one companion - one loved one - she is gone & I amalone..." His pain is palpable & the letter is truly moving. There is a reference to his wife having been from FranklinLouisiana and she may have emigrated after the Civil War. More Southerners moved to Australia than to any othercountry bar Mexico]
