Please be assured we do not accept bullying in any form at Maidstone and staff work very hard to ensure all students are safe. Bullying is a complex issue and there’s no simple solution. I would urge any parent who is concerned that their child is being targeted to contact the classroom teacher as soon as they suspect an issue. Children who are targeted often don’t tell anyone, but they become withdrawn and unhappy, and may be reluctant to come to school. Communication with your child’s teacher is essential in these instances. At the end of Term 2 all our students took part in a Me & My School wellbeing survey. This is a survey conducted through NZCER and is standardised to the New Zealand context. It measures engagement in learning, learning challenge, relationship with teachers, and attitude to learning and school in general. Cathie Johnson from NZCER came and unpacked the data with us. In many areas Maidstone equalled or exceeded the national norms. Cathie commented that the results showed Maidstone as ‘a culture of being a place of learning’. The Year 8 students moving on to College should be enrolled by now. If you have not yet done this please get on to it promptly. This gives security for your child knowing where they’re going, and ensures colleges can plan according to the numbers enroll ed. The same is true for us - if you know of Year 6 students who intend coming to Maidstone please remind them that enrolments are due by the end of next week. Deodorants. We had an unintended evacuation of the school this afternoon when the alarms were set off by boys spraying deodorant (far too generously and deliberately) in one of the changing rooms. We have in the past banned spray deodorants for similar reasons and this is to be reinstated. So from Monday there are to be no spray deodorants brought to school students are to have roll-ons only. Thank you for supporting us with this. Nga mihi nui Mary O’Regan Principal/Tumuaki 2018 School uniform The board of trustees have held discussions about the Maidstone uniform as part of a review. She then introduced some games and drills that the girls can use in their own personal and team trainings. Soft Toy Option 2017 We are very lucky that Michelle Park gives time out of her busy schedule to run the Soft Toy Making Option. Every Friday the students in the group have the opportunity to create toys for themselves or others out of fabric. Students are taught how to hand-sew and design a toy. Many students make several items in the 8 week cycle. “Hello I will be telling you about my experience in Soft Toy Making. I have learned a lot. So far I have made an emoji plush cushion and a T-shaped pillow. Right now I am working on a gift for one of my family members. Soft Toy Making can give you an opportunity to show your sewing skills. I would like to say thanks to Mrs Park and Mrs Baines for helping us.” Trinity A (Rm 12)

Performing Arts Romeo & Juliet Ballet On Friday 18 August 30 students were treated to a RNZB Romeo & Juliet Ballet workshop taken by Paden Dorgan with live music played by four lead musicians from the Wellington Orchestra. Students learnt several dance sequences from the ballet which they rehearsed to complete the workshop with gleeful smiles of achievement. Later that evening we drove into the St James theatre to watch the RNZB perform Romeo & Juliet. Before the performance they listened to the conductor of the Orchestra talk about the music written for the Ballet. We sat in the Gods and had an amazing view of the action and choreography of the Ballet. Students were delighted to see the dance sequences they had learnt and responded with glee as the first Act came to a very dramatic finish. Act Two continued the story of Romeo & Juliet, their relationship now strained and full of family tensions. Act Three was the dramatic and heart retching twist of the two central characters, and the story was bought to an emotional climax. The opportunity to attend the workshop and the Ballet performance gave the students an amazing opportunity to learn the disciplines of ballet and then see the expertise of dancers on stage bring a love story to life through dance. The costumes were stunning as was the set and lighting that effortlessly transformed the scenes and music that complimented the drama and emotion. A memorable experience for all our students. Many thanks to the parents who transported our students to the venue and back home.

Dance Splash Thirty five students are taking part in this year’s Dance Splash performance of –“The Epic Dragon”, on 22 September 7:45pm at the Michael Fowler Centre in Wellington. Rehearsals are well under way and Performing Arts leaders are busy with students choreographing the performance. Tickets for this event will be available from the school office soon.

oUR NEW basketball HOOPS For a few years now the SRC have been incredibly keen to get new basketball hoops installed out on the Redwood Street Courts. Fundraising started last year with a mufti day. Early this year, as quotes were being sought out, one of our parents, Brent Greer, put his company, Metco Engineering on offer to make the basketball hoops for free. Brent contacted other companies to help out with the project as well, bringing in Dews Construction to remove the old hoops and install the new ones, and Fletcher Steel to supply the raw materials. We would like to thank Brent for all the hard work he's put into getting the entire project together and to Dews Construction and Fletcher Steel for their contributions to the project as well. The hoops look absolutely fantastic and the students are having a blast playing out on the courts.

AIMS Games There are only 10 days until our Netball, BMX, Swimming and Gymnastics competitors head off to the 2017 AIMS Games Tournament. We are all very excited for this opportunity! You can follow our competitors’ progress on the Maidstone Intermediate and AIMS Games Facebook pages.

Inter-Intermediate Netball Tournament After the amazing training session with Irene Van Dyk, the Y7 and 8A Netball teams were pumped to be heading off to the 2017 Inter-Intermediate Netball Tournament. The Y7 team had a strong pool, with tough games against Tawa and SWIS. A big win over Avalon boosted their confidence. Tawa were the eventual winners in the Year 7 grade this year. The Year 8s had wins against Newlands B and Fergusson, but couldn’t hold on against the physical EBIS team; so they didn’t advance into the finals. They confidently beat Raroa B, and had a close draw with Raroa A for the final placings. The final results have yet to be confirmed, but the girls played so well throughout the day and can be pleased with their efforts! The Year 8 final was played between Hutt and Naenae, where Hutt proved to be the strongest team on the day. Although we didn’t bring home any silverware this year, the girls had great attitudes and the weather was fantastic too! We look forward to next year’s tournament. Liz Moka
