MAHURIN RANCH
THAYER, KANSAS APRIL 26-28, 2019
Welcome to the 2nd annual National Cattledog Association Futurity! We’d like to give you a little background of what the NCA is all about.
***NCA Mission Statement***
The mission of the National Cattledog Association is to
encourage efficient, low stress and humane cattle
handling by promoting the use and demonstrating the
value of well-trained cattledogs.
Our Goals:
1. To educate ranchers as to the value of well-trained cattledogs for humane, low stress cattle handling through demonstrations, clinics and public cattledog competitions (trials).
2. To assist ranchers in obtaining well trained
cattledogs, and in learning how to use them for efficient, humane and low stress cattle handling.
3. To foster amateur athletic competition by sanctioning
cattledog trials and hosting and managing a National Cattledog Association National Finals.
4. To assist NCA members, and other stock dog
breeders, in marketing cattledogs by providing
venues for demonstrating the abilities of their dogs.
Handlers may run in the immediate area of an
obstacle, only while they are working that obstacle.
No hitting or touching the cattle during the run.
No walking through or putting hands into obstacles.
Nothing may be carried in your hands.
No foul or profane language is allowed.
No alcohol is allowed on the trial premises.
No E-collars allowed on the trial premises. Regular
collars are allowed if they are not judged to be too
tight. Collars may be inspected either before or after
the run.
All judges, scorers, clerks, trial hosts, and cattle
handlers are to be treated with respect at all times.
Judges or scorers may only be addressed by the
handler during their run.
Your dogs will only be allowed in the arena or field
during your run. This includes the night before, and
during the handler meetings. (Dogs doing their
business in the area may alter another handler’s
dog’s behavior.)
No dogs tied anywhere in the arena or to the arena
or field fence.

NCA Futurity
Futurity dogs must have never been run in ANY trial or formal exhibition and have been born on or after April 1, 2017. Any handler is welcome to run. Handlers must be NCA members in good standing. With this in mind, this a very special class. Handlers are running young dogs with no prior trial experience. They really have no idea how their dogs will react to coming to town and being exposed to very different environment and conditions than they see at home. Any breed of stock dog is eligible to run in the Futurity Class.
Futurity Finale Dogs that ran in Futurity classes last year are eligible to run in the Futurity Finale. The 2018 Futurities include the NCA Futurity, the SWCDA Futurity, the Jack King Futurity, the Sundowner Futurity, and the SSDA Futurity.
Open
This is a class that is open to any handler with any dog. Once a handler runs in Open, they are not allowed to run in some of the other classes. It is both an NCA and local class.
Nursery This class is based completely on the age of the dog. Dogs in the Nursery class for the current NCA qualifying year must have been born on, or after, October 1, 2016. Any handler may run in this class. It is both an NCA and local class.
Intermediate This class is based solely on the handler. It is one step above Novice and is open to any handler that has not yet competed in the Open class. This is the stepping stone class to bring up Novice handlers, in order to prepare them for the Open class. It is both an NCA and local class.
Pro-Novice This class is open to any handler with any dog that has NOT run in Open class. It is only a local class.
Novice This is a class based on handler experience and is for beginning handlers with any dog that is not currently being run by another handler in a more advanced class. This is both an NCA and local class.

• National Cattledog Association (NCA) - Our national sanctioning body
• Local Class – A class sanctioned by a local or regional stock dog association such as the SWCDA, SSDA,CCA, or Sundowner.
• Points and time trial - This is a trial in which the dog
with the most points earned in the fastest time is the
winner.
• Obstacles - Different mechanisms set for the moving of the cattle in a specific way throughout the course, designed to show the dog’s abilities.
• Handler Line - An imaginary line that the handler is required to stand behind while working the dog. This line may be different for each class level.
• Fetch - Sending the dog to gather and bring the stock
to the handler. The cattle being fetched may be
required to be brought through a set obstacles’,
however, in the lower level classes, this may not be
required.
• Time Line - A designated place in the course where time is taken during the run. This time is used as a tie breaker, in the case that the total points scored and the final time are the same.

We would like to say ‘Thank you’ to everyone who has been involved in putting on this Futurity, for all their hard work and dedication to this event. In addition, we would like to recognize the members of all the other Associations across the country who also promote and support working stock dogs, a very special type of dog that brings us all together.
We would also ask that our handlers please take the time to call a few of these advertisers and sponsors and thank them for their generosity in helping to make this Futurity a success, for now and in the future.
KEEP THEM DOGGIES ROLLIN’!!
May God bless you and yours
