activities creating indelible impact on the
minds of all those involved.
MNRE was kind enough to support us to develop our lab and
also to take up training activities for South Indian States for
which we are greatful.
This Newsletter showcases the activities taken up by us to
spread the message of Renewable Energy & Sustainable
Development. I extend my thanks to all guest faculty,
resource persons, faculty & staff of MGIRED to have
supported in all the programmes initiated by me during
2014-15.
Presently we live at a moment of unprecedented social and
technological transformation and upheaval around. These
changing times demand new ideas and voices that inform,
entertain and provoke to achieve target goal. First thing is,
set your own house straight, then preach others. Hence, it is
being planned to make Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Rural
Energy and Development (MGIRED) campus as energy
independent zone model. Under this project it is decided to
make all effort for harnessing all feasible Renewable
Energy (RE) sources and adopt all Energy Conservation
(EC) measures, such as use of LED bulb, Rain Water
Harvesting (RWH), Micro-grid, Wind, Solar, Punati Sridhar, IFS,Additional PCCF & Executive Director, MGIRED
Wind-Solar hybrid, Biomass, Biogas, Pico-Hydro power
from sewage flow, Microbial and Fuel cells, etc.
MGIRED has taken up trainings for various sections of
society on Renewable Energy (RE), Energy Conservation
(EC), Environment Protection (EP), Rain Water
Harvesting (RWH), Forest Protection, etc. MGIRED has
celebrated all major National and International Days
pertaining to Energy, Environment, etc. MGIRED has
also taken up Remote Village Electrification Programme
(RVEP) by raising funds and providing Solar/Pico-hydro
energy with LED lights to light up the lives of the remote
dwellers.
It is a pleasure to introduce to all of you, the Annual issue
(01.04.2014 to 31.03.2015) of our MGIRED newsletter.
This has information on the programmes organised by
MGIRED for creating awareness among the masses as
well as develop human resources to plan, install and
maintain the RE systems in remote, rural households and
create awareness about RE, EC, EP measures, RWH,
Improved Cook Stoves, Forest Protection, etc. Newsletter
also shows the future action plan of the Institute. Let us
participate, talk and connect all players and participants
to make this mission fully successful.

NEW INITIATIVES
Remote Village Electrification
MGIRED has taken up remote village electrification
programme to electrify the villages in the last mile.
Our programme began with illuminating PISOSE
village households of Joida Taluk, Uttara Kannada
District, which is located in dense Anshi-Dandeli
Tiger Reserve in Western Ghats. Four LED
luminaries per house of 5W, 6W & 9W have been
provided with a solar panel, charge controller and a
battery. Power to cater to the need of a community TV
has also been provided through a separate solar
panel. Villagers who have not seen lights in their
village till then were extremely happy having this basic amenity. Fifty percent of the project cost for this
execution was collectively contributed by Sri Punati Sridhar, IFS, APCCF & ED, MGIRED; Dr. Shobha Anand
Reddy, SF and Sri. Ram Singh Verma, SF and the balance 50% was funded by MGIRED.
MGIRED would like to further take up RVEP of villages/hamlets located in interior forest/wildlife areas. Power
solutions are mainly by harnessing solar/wind/pico-hydro resources or combining technologies to provide
hybrid solution. MGIRED is thankful in this regard to the KFD for their cooperation in all our activities.
Individuals/Organizations interested to fund/contribute for these projects may contact us. Intimation of any
fund transfers for this noble cause can be made by sharing transaction details to [email protected],
[email protected]. Income Tax exemption can be availed for such assistance under Section 80G of IT Act.
Energy clubs – for schools and colleges
Objective of forming Energy Clubs at schools and college is to create awareness on Energy/Water
Conservation and inculcate best practices among students. MGIRED Faculty delivered lectures on RE and EC
followed by Quiz, Drawing, Essay Writing, Pick and Speak competitions. Thereby, awareness was created
among the future citizens in judiciously using resources and motivated to take technology to the masses.
Energy Clubs were formed in following schools:
Nature Camp to Shivanalli and Bannerghatta Zoological Gardenth
December 10 2014

them to earn Rs.20.25 lakhs per year. By now
most of the loan is repaid.
He has also invested on a 9kW wood based
Biomass Gassifier way back in 2003 and used
for common lighting of the Panchayat saving
money. However after 3 years, when the wood
