MAIMS - Where Reality goes beyond Expectations

    Academic Session 2018 - 2019

JA AGA RR AA SH ENA M

  • Maharaja Agrasen - an icon of non-violence, messenger of Peace, embodiment of Sacrifice, Compassion, Prosperity and full of virtues, eldest son of King Ballabh of Pratapnagar, was born at the last stage of Dvaapar Yug, according to the Mahalakshmi Vrat. The b i r t h o f M a h a r a j a Agrasen took place nearly

5185 years ago, almost around the period of Mahabharat. King Ballabh was a Suryavanshi (lineage from the Sun) so Maharaja Agrasen got the tag of Suryavanshi by birth. He never discriminated and his subjects were very pleased with him. During his young age Prince Agrasen was compassionate about the issues around him.

At a young age, he attended the Swyamvara (ceremony of marriage) of Princess Madhavi, the daughter of the King Nagaraj. Princess Madhavi was highly impressed by him and readily accepted him as her life partner. This marriage lead to the union of two different clans.

Maharaja Agrasen was a Shiv Bhakta so he built a place of for Lord Shiva in the holy city of Kashi. Lord Shiva got pleased with this place of worship, so appeared in front of him and advised Agrasen to worship Goddess Mahalakshmi. Maharaja Agrasen earnestly prayed to Mahalakshmi; and his devotion was rewarded with the appearance of Mahalakshmi before him. The Goddess blessed and suggested him to take up the vaishya tradition of business for the sake of prosperity of people. She further instructed him to build a new kingdom and promised prosperity to his descendants. On the advice of Mahalakshmi he gave up his Kshatriya tradition, returned to Agroha and built Mahalakshmi temple as an abode of KULDEVI of Agroha.

Maharaja Agrasen conducted Ashwamedh Yagna and as part of this yagna he conducted 18 yagnas, one for each of his 18 sons. 17 yagnas were concluded with the sacrifice of a horse as part of the vedic tradition but

thduring the 18 yagna, the sacrificial horse started crying as he became aware of death approaching him. This touched Maharaja Agrasen's heart and he decided not to sacrifice the horses as a part of the

yagna. Maharaja Agrasen established 18 Gotras in the name of Gurus who performed 18 Yagnas. There were 18 states in Agroha republic. The contributions of Maharaja Agrasen were well recognised by Government of India by naming a ship in his name. The same was purchased by Government of India for 350 crore rupees from South Korea

Government of India also launched a postal ticket in the name of Maharaja Agrasen in 1976.

    PHILOSOPHY OF MAHARAJA AGRASEN:

The philosophy of Maharaja Agrasen is based on humanity, simplicity equality, love and affection among people. He was the first ruler who established socialism in his regime in the real sense. He started the tradition of giving “Ek Rupiya, ek Eent”(one rupee and one brick) to anyone settling in his kingdom. There was no unemployment in his regime and everyone had his own home. The principle of “Give and Take” was practised by everyone in his kingdom. In this setup of receiving things from and donating things neither the receiver felt shamed nor the donator felt proud. There were equal opportunities for people with various economic backgrounds.

During his regime, feelings of social welfare and brotherhood galored in the mind of every citizen. There was no corruption or selfishness in his kingdom. The development of kingdom and life style of people was completely based on agriculture, trade and dairy.

His belief in non-violence hardly meant non-resistance to oppression. He promoted self defence. According to him, self protection and national defence were not the task of only kshatriyas - the warrior caste, rather it was the duty of each citizen to protect and safeguard their motherland.

The ideas of equality, justice, socialism and non-violence propounded by Maharaj Agrasen 5,000 years ago formed the spirit of the present Constitution of India.

These principles are “Guiding Mantras” for every Indian even in the contemporary times. In MAIMS everyone feels wedded to these high ideals of life and over the years these principles have proved effective in the holistic development of our students and society at large.
