MAGNETIC SEPARATION
Magnetic separationis a process inwhich magnetically susceptible material is
extracted from a mixture using a magnetic
force. This separation technique can be useful
in mining iron as it is attracted to a magnet.

MAGNETIC SEPARATION
Principle:
Magnetic separation is technique used in
metallurgy for the concentration of ore
particles. The principle of this method is that
the magnetic ore particles can be separated
from non magnetic impurities (gangue) or vice
versa.

MAGNETIC SEPARATION
APPLICATIONS:
Magnetic separation is used in a wide spectrum of areas
of material handling whose requirements differ
considerably. In general terms, magnetic separationmethods are used in several distinct processes
Magnetic filtration
! recovery of liquid ( the magneti"able solids are
discarded)
! recovery of magneti"able solids (liquid is discarded)

APPLICATIONS
#oncentration of magneti"able component into
the magnetic fraction and re$ection of the
%non!magnetic& waste.
#oncentration of non!ferrous metals by
discarding the non!metallic components of a
mixture, and separation of individual non!
ferrous metals into individual fractions.

APPLICATIONS
'eparation of materials into individual density
fractions.
for large volume separation in the mining,
aggregate, and other industries.
It is also widely used to remove metalcontaminants from plastics but not to separate
plastics from each other.

ADVANTAGES
Magnetic separation provides hands!off
automation and high reliability in contrast to
ha"ardous, laborious, and inefficient manual
methods of cutting apart material components
with a nife or band saw. 'uch methods often
result in incomplete separation, so recovered
material is usable mainly in lower!valueapplications.

The MagMill is a selective dry screening and magnetic separationprocess that is integrated into the existing coal pulverizers to removeunwanted coal constituents prior to combustion. The MagMill canreduce emissions of mercury and/or sulfur, improve boiler performanceby reducing ash components that contribute to slagging and/or erosion, and reduce coal costs by upgrading poor quality coals.
ithin a pulverizer, coal falls down a central feed pipe onto a rotatingtable in the bottom portion of the pulverizer. !s the table rotates, thecoal is slung radially outward and crushed as it passes underneathgigantic steel tires which roll in grooves on the table. "ot air blown fromunderneath the rotating table enters the grinding chamber through agap at the outer circumference of the rotating table. This hot air bothdries the coal and sweeps the #ne particles released in the crushingupward to the classi#er at the top of the mill. $versize particles arereturned for additional grinding and the #ne particles are blown directlyto the burners.

'ecause of their weight and hardness, the minerals inthe feed coal require more passes underneath therollers than does the relatively soft hydrocarboncomponent of the coal. The minerals, therefore,
become concentrated on the grinding table. (n the MagMill con#guration a stream rich in these
hard)to)grind minerals such as iron pyrite iswithdrawn through the wall of the pulverizer to themagnetic separator. $utside the pulverizer the
material is processed through mechanical andmagnetic separators to re*ect the minerals and torecover the carbon which is returned to the mill forgrinding to speci#cation.

MAGNETIC !ILTRATION
Magnetic filtration is used primarily for the
removal of fine particulates from dilute fluid
suspensions.
1emoval is carried out by passing suspensions
through a magneti"ed matrix, which leads to
the retention of particles throughout the matrix. The fluid stream may be either liquid or gas.

MAGNETIC !ILTERATIONPROCESS
The process of magnetic filtration is analogous
to that of deep be filtration, the difference being
that an additional external force, namely the
magnetic force, contributes to the filtrationefficiency in magnetic filtration.
The magnitude of the applied magnetic field isdictated by the magnetic susceptibility of the
suspended solids.
