Basics

GERWAH® Magnetic Clutches do not transmit torques through mechanical con-nections like their mechanical counterparts but by using magnetic forces. It has to be distinguished between synchronous- and hysteresis clutches according to the func-tion principle in use.

High-tech torque transmission

Synchronous clutches transmit torques by magnetic forces, which are produced through periodically arranged, opposite permanent magnets. According to the size of the clutch, torques up to 1000 Nm can be transmitted. When exceeding the rated torque level the magnetic forces break off, the clutch slips and transmits only a minor rest torque. The synchronous clutch owes its name to its characteristic to only trans-mit torque if a synchronous run of the sys-tem to connect is granted.

The synchronous clutch

With this type of clutch, one half of the clutch is coated with a hysteresis lining instead of permanent magnets. This hysteresis mate-rial works similar to the permanent magnets, but through the hysteresis lining, poles can be changed with low effort. If the nominal torque of the clutch is exceeded, the clutch starts slipping. Thereby the hysteresis mate-rial takes up energy from the drive system, due to the permanent changing of poles caused by the passing of the permanent magnets and transforms this into lost heat which is released into the environment.

In bottle capping systemsDue to technical superiority and elegant functionality compared to all other solutions, hysteresis clutches established themselves world-wide in this field of application. Precise torque limiting, wear-free operation, constant and jerkfree behaviour within the overload range as well as the stainless steel and equipment-free version are significant advantages. Especially our two series HSV and HLV have proven themselves as excellent for the use in bottling machi-nes.

In wind-up and unwind applicationsWithin this field of application exact and constant torque limiting is crucial, which is fulfilled optimally by GERWAH® Hysteresis Clut-ches.

As brakesEspecially for the application as a brake the GERWAH® Magnetic Clutches show themselves as manifold suitable: As a load for engines for example, or even as generators for test blocks and furthermore in many other application fields. Through their abra-sion-free operation, GERWAH® Hysteresis Clutches offer funda-mental advantages over friction based clutch systems.

Basics

Description

The GERWAH® Barrier Can Clutch is a permanently magnetic synchronous coupling that transmits the torque by magnetic forces without contact between the inner and outer rotor. It guarantees a hermetic separation of the drive and driven sides with its mechani-cal structure. This allows a reliable seal against aggressive media and serves as a safety element and overload protection against damage and/or stoppage of the drive and the aggregate.

Function / Structure

The GERWAH® Barrier Can Clutch consists of a corrosion resistant outer and inner rotor. The outer rotor is fitted on the inner side and the inner rotor is fitted on the outer side with high-quality permanent magnets with alternating polarity. An insulating shroud can be placed between the two rotors in order to separate two different media.

Barrier can

The barrier can is mounted to the aggregate on the driven side in a fixed location and separates the inner and outer rotors from one another. It ensures a functioning transmission of torque without a mechanical connection. Various materialssuch as stainless steel, PEEK and oxide ceramics allow usage in any application. The rotating magnetic field generates constantly eddy currents in the metallic isolation shrouds which converted into heat and thus makes cooling measures necessary. When used in transportation aggregates the heat energy that is created can be discharged through the trans-ported medium. The expected power dissipation must be taken into account when designing the coupling.

In idle state the magnets of the rotors are opposite. This produces a completely symmetrical magnetic field. If the rotors are turned, then the magnetic field lines change, transmitting torque through the air gap without any leakage.

If the maximum torque is exceeded then the power transmission is interrupted. The GERWAH® Barrier Can Clutch offers reliable protection from overload for the drive and the aggregate. The encapsulation of the inner rotor and the use of stainless steel means that all the clutch parts are free of corrosion.

Magnetic disc couplings GWM 5202.3 and GWM 5204.3

Description

The GERWAH® Magnetic Disc Couplings are permanently magne-tic synchronous couplings that transmit the torque between the two disc rotors without contact. Their structure guarantees a hermetic separation of drive and driven sides. This makes separation simple when aggressive media are used.

If the nominal torque is exceeded then the magnetic forces cut off, the coupling slips through and only transmits a low residual torque. Synchronous couplings consist of two individual magnetic disc coupling halves (GWM 5202.3 or GWM 5204.3).

Function / Structure

The coupling includes two facing discs that are fitted with strong magnets. The torque that is applied on a disc is transmitted to the other disc through the air gap. Transmission through flat walls is very simple.

Magnetic and hysteresis disc couplings are only sold as individual halves.

Partial deliveries are subject to conditions.

Basics

Hysteresis disc couplings GWM 5202.4 and GWM 5204.4

Description

The GERWAH® Hysteresis Disc Couplings are fitted with hysteresis material in place of the permanent magnets. This hysteresis material has a similar effect to the permanent magnets but the polarity can be reversed with little energy input. If the nominal torque is exceeded then the coupling begins to slip. The hysteresis material then takes up energy from the drive system because of the constant changes in polarity in the permanent magnets turning past it and converts this into heat loss, which is given off into the environment. Hysteresis couplings comprise one magnetic disc coupling half (GWM 5202.3 or GWM 5204.3) and one hysteresis disc coupling half (GWM 5202.4 or GWM 5204.4).

Magnetic and hysteresis disc couplings are only sold as individual halves. Partial deliveries are subject to conditions.

Magnetic clutches explanation

At overload status the hysteresis clutches and brakes slip. The losses (from slip rotation speed and torque) are transformed into heat. If the dissipation power exceeds the quantity of heat which can be conducted to the environment, the clutch (brake) will overheat. With the formula on the right side it is possible to check if the chosen max. power loss of the clutch (brake) is sufficient for the desired operation.

Example 1:

A hysteresis brake series HSV 2 (Pvmax = 23 W) is applied as a winder brake (s = 1). The applied torque shall be 1,5 Nm. Which rotation speed is allowed permanently without overheating the brake? The brake can slip permanently at a rotation speed of 146 min-1. Starting out from this result the average paper speed (dependent on the diameter of the paper roll) can now be calculated.

Example 2:

A hysteresis clutch series HSV 4a is applied in a bottle capping machine. One working cycle lasts 8 seconds. 6 seconds of this the clutch is engaged, 2 seconds the inner and the outer part are rotating relatively to each other. These 2 seconds are the actual load cycle of the clutch – the clutch is slipping.
