The Phoney War
Blitzkreig• Lightning war
• Overwhelm opposition with strong infantry, air support, tanks, and artillery
• Cut through a short section of the battlefront, and disrupt communication deep behind enemy lines
• Benelux countries quickly fell to the Germans because of this tactic, and Hitler was then able to turn his attention towards France
Maginot Line• Concrete defences, designed for a long drawn-out war
• Germans simply went North through Benelux, and bi-passed the heavily fortified areas
• Close to 350,000 Allied forces collapsed and retreated to the beaches of Dunkirk
The Maginot Line
The Maginot Line
Dunkirk, and the Allied Armada
• Armada: A fleet of warships
• Hitler, hesitated as to whether he should continue the attack, and during that pause, the Allies (British) managed a rescue mission
• Not truly an armada; more a collection of fishing, pleasure, and commercial boats. Some naval vessels as well.
• A miracle, and a fantastic morale boost, although France would officially surrender shortly after
And so began Hitler’s European tyranny, and charge towards Britain
