Educational Travelogue:
The Galapagos Islands
Wednesday, May 14th
1:30 pm in the Party Room
The Galapagos Islands are famous around the world
for the unique types of wildlife that live there. What
would it be like to travel to these islands and
experience it first-hand?
That’s exactly what Bobbie Rodriguez did! In
January of 2008, Bobbie and her husband traveled to
the Galapagos Islands with Lindblad Expeditions and
National Geographic. And on Wednesday, May
14th, at 1:30 pm in the Party Room, Bobbie will
share her pictures, stories, and memories of that
fabulous trip!
During the trip, National Geographic took many
amazing pictures, which were given to Bobbie at the
end of the trip. You will hear about the most
interesting species of animals and birds they saw
there: the blue footed booby, the frigate bird, the
marine iguanas and much more.
A retired kindergarten teacher, Bobbie currently
volunteers at the Adelante Mujeres pre-school in
Forest Grove. This is her second time doing a trave-
logue for Cornell Estates; last year she presented
slides and pictures about her trip to Ireland.

You will see history and culture come alive with a
presentation and images presented by Ilene
O’Malley, Washington County Museum’s Bilingual
Educator. O’Malley holds a PhD in History from the
University of Michigan, with a specialty in Mexican
popular culture. She worked as an attorney for
Mexican form workers in Oregon for 15 years.
The No The Northern Lights with Roy Torley
Friday, May 23rd
1:30 pm in the Party Room
The aurora borealis, or northern lights, have long
been a source of wonder, awe, superstition, and
myths. They come in different colors, and take on
different shapes with the passing minutes.
But have you ever wondered what makes the
Northern Lights? If so, join gentleman scientist Roy
Torley on Friday, May 23rd, at 1:30 pm in the
Party Room.
During his presentation, Dr. Torley reveals these
glowing curtains and star-bursts in all their ethereal
glory. He also explains how and where they come
from, and that Earth isn’t the only place where they
happen!
The presentation will last approximately 45 minutes.
However, Dr. Torley is always prepared to show
more, should the audience want an encore!

Goodie Bags for
Foster Parent Appreciation
Wednesday, May 21st
1:30 pm in the Cascade Room
The Department of Human Services depends on foster
parents to do the day-to-day parenting for these chil-
dren until they can either return safely to their own
homes or until an alternate permanent plan is found.
In Oregon alone, there are over 8000 children in fos-
ter care, so you can imagine how important foster par-
ents are in these children’s lives. The Department of
Human Services in Washington County is hosting a
Foster Parent Appreciation Event and has asked for
our help!
On Wednesday, May 21st, Cornell Estates will be
putting together goodie bags for the parents that at-
tend the Foster Parent Appreciation Event hosted by
the Washington County DHS. When the parents re-
ceive these goodie bags, they will find a personalized
note from one of our residents.
If you are interested in helping assemble the goodie
bags, meet in the Cascade Room at 1:30 p.m. on
Wednesday, May 21st.

National Day of Prayer
Thursday, May 1st
1:30 pm in the Party Room
The 63rd annual National Day of Prayer, May 1,
2014, will have profound significance for our
country.
The theme for 2014 is One Voice, United in
Prayer, emphasizing the need for individuals,
corporately and individually, to place their faith in
the unfailing character of their Creator, who is
sovereign over all governments, authorities, and
men.
The Scripture, Romans 15:6 “So that with one mind
and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of
our Lord Jesus Christ” will serve as a representation
of this year’s theme.
Cornell Estates’ residents are invited to join millions
of Americans on Thursday, May 1st, at 1:30 pm in
the Party Room to take part in the
intercession of prayer for America and its leadership.
Helvetia Church Pastor Bryan Austring and pianist
Dorthy Eby will join several of our residents to lead
us in prayer and worship.
If you would like to read a scripture during our Na-
tional Day of Prayer Service, please see Amanda
Bigus in Community Programs.
