Welcome to the first color printed der Bayerische! I am thrilled to see our chaptermagazine will now be economically published in color. Although many people contributed to getting this project from dream to reality so rapidly, I want to recognizethe der Bayerische Staff, including Jim LaFemina and Dennis Follett, for their efforts. But I think Jim and Dennis would both agree that this would never have happenedwithout the tenacity and vision of our production manager, Raine Mantysalo. Raine saw the opportunity to make the leap to color, worked out the details, secured avery good offer and presented it to the Board for quick action. I am confident thateveryone will enjoy the new publication, see its possibilities, and the ability we nowhave to bring out the true beauty of our cars.

The second order of business is to congratulate all those who contributed to thesuccess of our 2010 ChapterFest. Despite the date change and a few last minuteglitches, we held our biggest event to date. With more than 700 people attending, thisyear’s signature outing was certainly a great success. We had karting, Street Survival, autocross, an outdoor do-it-yourself (with lifts!), and concours events, not to mention a well-catered lunch. Of course, it requires scores of volunteers to set up, runand break down an event of this size so I won’t be able to list them all by name. I dowant to mention all the program chairs who contributed their talents to help organizeand pull off this event. However, special recognition must go to Algie Livingstonwhose tireless efforts on our behalf truly brought this event to life. If you couldn’tmake it this year, I hope to see you there next year.

Finally, I would be terribly remiss if I did not say thanks to all our volunteers. As I am looking at the November/December der Bayerische’s calendar, it is amazingthat we are able to plan and execute more than 100 events in a single year. It all comesdown to both the quantity and quality of our volunteer corps. Thank you all for yourgreat work.

See you at an event soon.Dave

Pondered and written over the recentThanksgiving Holiday, I stumbledacross the perfect introduction to thismonth’s column while enjoying whathas become an annual tradition inmost, if not all, of the nearly fiftyyears I’ve been around. No, it wasn’tthe bounty of the holiday dinner –this fine publication is certainly noturkey! No, what it was could be seenrepeatedly over the long weekendcourtesy of the Turner ClassicMovies television channel, whosesignal was airing a seemingly end-less loop of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s1939 cinematic masterpiece, TheWizard of Oz. Because once thisissue arrived, each of us was DorothyGale, strangers in a strange landopening a door that literally changedthe way we saw everything on theother side. Welcome to the wonder-ful world of COLOR. From this dayforward we can stop wondering if thatsweet old 2002 Touring is Fjord Blue,Sahara Beige, or Colorado Orange. No longer will the excellent coverageof our events look like something lifted from an antique Movietonenews reel, or clipped from somelong-since forgotten episode of ILove Lucy when Lucy and Ethel stealRicky’s new 507 only to lose it in alate night poker game in Atlantic City.Nope, those grays are gone forever. From now on we’re going to carve upthe yellow brick road. And just waituntil you see the return of the“Ultimate Owner” column – that’s no

ordinary M3, that’s Techno Violet, baby. Talk about a horse of a differ-ent color! “What’s the big deal,” Ihear you saying. “So der Bayerischeis now in color – big whoop – welcome to 17th century printing.”Well, okay, point taken – we’re notexactly breaking any new groundhere. But let me say two thingsbefore you all so quickly and casually dismiss this giant leapwe’ve just taken. First of all, I canassure you that Raine did NOT handcolor each of these copies, eventhough the article he’s written for thisissue may lead some of you tobelieve he would’ve done exactlythat, if the situation ever called for it.Secondly, and more importantly, it’sour first color issue and there’s justsomething inherently special andmemorable about firsts, even whenit’s simply taking a fresh, new look atan old, dear friend. Considering allwe do to keep our vintage cars looking great while still deliveringthe level of performance that hookedus in the first place, this is reallynothing more than a performanceboost – a long-overdue modificationto add a little kick. Besides, whomore than us understands the fundamental truth in the idea thatsome things really do get better withage? These beautiful cars deserve tobe seen in all their glory – one lookat this month’s “Traditions” articleshould convince you of that. Andwho knows? Maybe this refreshing

white. With deadlines rapidlyapproaching, I decided it would bebest to hold off on ChapterFestreporting for just one issue, andmake sure we covered it completelyin the next one. With that in mind, ifanybody out there wants to offer up

little splash of color is just another beginning. Check back in anotherforty years – we may be ready tointroduce der Bayerische in stunning 1950s-era 3D!

You'll notice, throughout thisissue, we have included several colorful images of our late October2010 ChapterFest event. Please forgive our inability to provide aproper written accounting of thatenormously successful celebrationof all things Bavarian, blue, and

some additional reporting on theevent, please do not hesitate to sendme your thoughts. New writers arealways welcome.

To further illustrate the impactof stepping through that doorbetween what was and what couldbe, consider the images below. These are, of course, two of the actual cover images from 2010. Ithought they were both very welldone, and as editor I can say withoutquestion that I was proud of each of

these issues. But just look at whatwe were missing – I think the wordI'm looking for is "wow!"

Come join us for the most fun, competitive racing in the DC areain the NCC Winter Karting League at Allsports Grand Prix inDulles, VA. This summer we experimented with the Allsportsstaff trying out modifications to the track layout. As an outcome,we will rotate the races through five different course layouts. Each race day will consist of a 15 lap qualifying heat followed bya Micro Grand Prix of 4x20 lap heat races. The format for theracing will be the same each week, but the course will rotatethrough the five courses twice during the season. Heat racingallows competition between drivers with similar skills, experi-ence, and lap times. As usual, best times from each heat will beused to establish the grid for the following heat. This makes fortight battles on the racetrack and some good camaraderie afterthe races are finished. Races will be scored based on finishingposition; points will be accumulated within the weight classesand for the overall point total. At the end of the season eachracer will be allowed to drop one event from the points total tokeep his or her best nine events.

For President – Paul Seto

As President, I want to continue down the path of being fiscally responsiblewhile growing membership participation and integrating existing programs. The budget process initiated during the past few years has given us a great toolto correctly reign in spending while being able to allocate resources where theyare needed. The introduction and expansion of various programs over the pastfew years (ChapterFest, Social, Karting, and DIY to name a few) has addedtremendous value to our members, and has become a gateway into our greatchapter. As a current Board member, I've had the pleasure to introduce a lot ofnew members to our club and understand what they want out of membership.Becoming President will further that experience as we support change andgrowth in our chapter.

For Vice President – Algie Livingston

I’d like the opportunity to serve our Chapter as Vice President for the 2011 term.I have been a member of the club since 2006 and in that time, I’ve had the pleas-ure to participate in many chapter events and truly appreciate the value of ourclub. The success of the club programs is solely based on volunteer activity. The committees that manage these programs graciously give of their time andskills to help the club strengthen the membership with a variety of programs. To continue executing great programs in the club, we need toincrease our volunteer base.

During my time with the club I have led several tours and created the PieRun fun runs. As 2010 ChapterFest Chairman, I visited many chapter eventsfrom socials, autocross, DIYs, and track days to promote ChapterFest. Duringthese visits, I found that many of our members would like to be more involvedin the club and they just don’t know where to begin.

As Vice President, I’d like to serve the chapter by increasing memberinvolvement in the various chapter programs. My goal is to inform the members of all of the volunteer opportunities as well as increase the accessi-bility of each program. I am eager for the opportunity to serve the club in thiscapacity and ask for your vote as Vice President.

For Secretary – Greg Lindsay

I have had the pleasure to serve as Secretary for the last year and MembershipChair for the last four years. During this time I have worked closely with theBoard and our dedicated program chairs to engage our Chapter members’ participation in all our events. I ask now for the opportunity to continue to serveas Chapter Secretary and, with the Board, will focus on expanding programactivities, increasing participation, and bringing value to our members.

For Treasurer – Dave Miller

For the past five years I have served on the chapter Board of Directors, first asSecretary and most recently as President. Although I am stepping down asPresident, I would like the opportunity to continue to serve our chapter asTreasurer. During this period we have been deliberately returning value to ourmembers. We have aggressively expanded a number of programs from DIY toKarting to the ChapterFest. This year’s ChapterFest was a huge success inbringing out our membership by providing fun, excitement, and learningopportunities in a safe environment. Though we have reached many of ourgoals there are still a number of opportunities to continue to provide value toour members while operating efficiently. I ask for your support and vote to continue these initiatives and the opportunity to continue to serve the club.

Everything came together forour chapter’s last drivingschool of the year; the weather

was perfect, there was a great bar-beque dinner, the instruction wastop-notch, and it was all infusedwith typical National CapitalChapter camaraderie. Thanks toour sponsor, Radial Tire of SilverSpring, Maryland, the club enjoyeda scrumptious barbeque buffet onSaturday night. Radial Tire is alongtime National Capital Chaptersponsor, and generously donated aset of Toyo tires as the featureddoor prize.

In addition, BMW of Fairfaxdonated a substantial amount ofdoor prizes, courtesy of generalmanager Mark McCollum, andJames Duerbeck, a fellow clubmember and top BMW sales guy atFairfax BMW. We also want tothank Brian Hair and OG Racing, fortheir contributions. Brian is anNCC instructor and championautocrosser. When all was said anddone more than $900 worth of doorprizes was contributed, betweenRadial Tire, BMW of Fairfax, andOG Racing.

Because of the great weather, and the fact that it was held at theSummit Point Main Circuit, whichis the favorite track for most enthusiasts of thethree tracks atSummit Point, the school wascompletely full.

The NationalCapital Chapterprides itself in the

and accomplishments as drivers, but also for their ability to impartthat knowledge to their students ina clear, concise, and professionalmanner.

Our driving schools are divided into fourrun groups basedon the students’driving schoolexperience andcar. Each studenthas an instructorwith them for the

capable car. At a National CapitalChapter drivers’ school, you will beable to realize your car’s capabili-ties, learn the limits of those capabilities under controlled condi-tions, and practice the skills needed to control your car safelywithin those limits. Unskilled drivers typically react reflexively ornot at all to impending trouble. Ittakes training and practice to anticipate and correct for a potentialloss of control.

The school is run by several

professionals, all of whom volunteer their time to do so. PeteRead, our chief instructor, does anamazing job of keeping the schoolon schedule and is assisted by Matt Oleksiak, our driving school coordinator. Great job Matt andPete! Bob Briggs is the InstructorAcademy Chief. He conducts theclassroom sessions on Friday forinstructors and designs the curricu-lum for the instructor academy.Doug Verner handles the registra-tion, a thankless, but necessarytask! Thank you, Bob and Doug.

I encourage everyone who hasnot had the thrill of driving quickly, and without worrying about radar orinattentive drivers, to attend one ofour driving schools. The beltway isinfinitely more dangerous than thetrack where everyone is focused andunder the watchful eyes of veryqualified instructors. There is minimal tire wear and brake padsare used as they are meant to be. If your car is under the 4-year/50,000 BMW factory warranty,BMW NA will replace your pads! What a deal!

See you next year at SummitPoint!

This Is Not Your Roundel, Folks.By Raine Mantysalo, dB Production Manager

Surprised to see your black andwhite newsletter in color? I hope it’s a welcome surprise.Over the years, there have

been several attempts to print ourchapter newsletter in color. Butuntil now, the increased costs havealways made it prohibitive.

The addition of color makesreading the articles much moreinteresting, and you no longer haveto guess about the color of the carsin the articles.

To most people the step wehave taken with this issue may notseem like such a big deal. Isn’t justabout everything printed in colorthese days? Yeah, but what itmeans to some of us can only beexplained by sharing a little history.

Back in 1983, when I took overthe dB editorial job from Ira andBernice Winthrop, I rememberbeing handed a huge box of old

newsletters, paste-up boards andother miscellaneous material. Thatwas 27 years ago. Looking back, Ihad no idea where it would take us.

I was mainly functioning asthe layout and production personcollecting the coming events material and articles, as most of useditors did those days. But back in the days when there were no personal computers, puttingtogether a newsletter was a little different.

First of all, to get pictures forthe articles, I used to go and hangout at various events with my Nikonloaded with Plus X Pan (black andwhite) film. I remember taking tonsof pictures covering these events.Sometimes that meant jumping inand out of my car while waiting myturn at an autocross or on the trackat Summit Point.

Once I got home, I developed

For drawing guidelines to helppaste down items, I used specialpencils and markers that werecalled “non-photo blues.” The lightblue color in them was not photo-sensitive; i.e. the camera could notsee it.

Once the prints had dried andI had done just enough layout workto determine what size pictures Ineeded for the layout, I madehalftones of them by using a photo-stat camera. A photostat or “stat”camera was a type of enlarger usedto scale prints and artwork byexposing them onto light–sensitivePMT (photo mechanical transfer)paper. With halftones in place, theprinter was able to make negativesof the entire pages by “shooting”the art “dot-to-dot.”

Halftones were identical pictures of the selected prints butthe images in them consisted of

the film in a makeshift photo lab in mybasement. Occasionally, I also usedcommercial photo labs, but time didn’t always allow sending the filmout to be developed. Once the filmnegative was developed and dried, I made contact sheets of the filmstripsto inspect the images and select theones I wanted to use and print.

To make the prints I used anenlarger. Once the pictures wereenlarged, the prints had to be devel-oped in three containers filled withchemicals and then hung to dry on aclothesline.

If a picture wasn’t available, butwas expected to come later, I used“Rubylith” (a red adhesive material) tocreate a square box, a “window,” tosave space for it in the layout. Oncethe entire page was made into a negative, there would be a transparent window left for that picture’s negative to be stripped in.

small dots in various sizes. Thehalftones were made by exposingthe stat paper through line screens(sheets of film) that were either fineor coarse depending on whether thehalftones were intended for maga-zine (fine) or newspaper (coarse)reproduction. The line screen qualitywas determined by the number oflines of dots each had per one inch. The reason they were calledhalftones, is that they had no solid(continuous) areas of black or grey.In comparison, photographic printsare commonly called continuous-tone prints. The halftone pictureswere pasted on page mechanicals,camera-ready paste-up boards.

How the copy was handled is astory by itself. Since there were nocomputers or keyboards to entercopy, the articles were mainly sub-mitted either typed or even in somecases handwritten. Usually thetypewritten copy had to be retypedto fit the layout and then glued downin place on the paste-up boards.

In 1983, I introduced typeset-

ting to the dB. Those days, a type-setter was using a dedicated type-setting machine to set type in typegalleys (long sheets of type)according to your specifications;you selected the font, size, leading, line measure, etc.

“Spec-ing” type or copy cast-ing was a real art. You had to provide the typesetter with thespecifications to use for setting

all of the type. Using a Haberule (type

take to have all the copy set in thatsize. If it didn’t fit, you had to eitherchange the size of the font orchange the leading or have thetypesetter tweak the copy by kern-ing, tightening the letter spacing.Too many times the fitting was leftup to the typesetter with instruc-tions that simply read “set to fit.”

Once the paste-up boardswere released to the printer, theprinter would make page negativesof them and then provide a blue-line proof for checking contentaccuracy and making sure that allthe pages, type and pictures were inthe right place. It was a process ofexposing the negatives to a light-sensitive material providing theclosest match to the actual newslet-ter, only in blue.

Nowadays, what you see is anewsletter created from easilydownloaded digital photos thatwere resized (to correct resolution)and placed in an electronic layout. The submitted articles are alsodownloaded from the Club’s

gauge) you first calculated thenumber of characters you could fiton a single line (column) in a certain size of a font, and then figured out how many lines it would

production Web site and simplyimported into the document. Tochange the font or to resize it, allyou have to do is click the mouse.Resizing photos is just as easy.

Once the layout and all theproofing (also done online) aredone, the files are uploaded onto theprinter’s FTP site for pre-pressflight-check.

I remember when floppies,SyQuest and Zip disks were commonly in use. Now, with thehelp of FTP sites, you can uploadhundreds of megabytes in just a fewminutes.

I hope this brief history of thedB production process has helpedthe reader better understand how farwe have actually come, and howmuch the addition of color means.Let’s not forget how we got here, and appreciate the constantlyimproving technology.

You’ve come a long way, dB!

BMW public relations took a turnfor the worse when TomKowalewski took over. Rather

than being the accessible elite auto-motive brand, Kowalewski trains hisstaff (e.g., storm troopers) to treatloyal buyers and enthusiasts as aninconvenience to their marketingstrategy while sucking up to publica-tions that have little relevance to eitherthe brand or the market. As a result, the only time those of us who write forthe best car club in the world haveaccess to new BMW vehicles is dur-ing the annual auto show circuit.

So when we learned that the new6 Series and the new X3 were to debutat the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show, itbecame a “must-attend” event for us.

I’ve been a big fan of the modern6 Series, especially the convertible, since it debuted in 2004. Even whena dear friend of mine referred to it as a “chick car,” I purchase my limit ofannual Oktoberfest raffle tickets withthe hopes of winning one. In myhumble opinion, it’s that version ofthe 6 Series that was the best execu-tion of Chris Bangle’s design theme.

The 2011 6 Series and 2011 X3 at the 2011 LA Auto Show: Better Than Heidi KlumHeidi Klum was in attendance

during the L.A. Auto Show mediadays to promote Volkswagen. If shehad seen the new 6 Series, I have nodoubt that she would have jumpedship. Ironically, I cited the M6 as the“Heidi Klum of cars” in my recentreview of that car!

The 6 Series is traditionally theBMW Design Studios statementvehicle and Adrian Von Hooydonk, has done this vehicle justice. As he did with the 5 Seriesand the 7Series, VonHooydonkcreated avery pleas-ing evolutionof the Bangled e s i g n ,modernizingthe flamesurfacing that was a key feature of theBangle designed BMWs to a morecontemporary look. The VonHooydonk “freshening” of the Bangledesigns may ultimately be consid-

ered more timeless than the Bangledesigns because of the use of naturally flowing and matchedcontours, curves, and lines. The VonHooydonk design makes the Bangledesign seem forced. However, it willbe interesting to see how VonHooydonk does when he creates hissignature-designed vehicles.

While the 6 Series coupe andconvertible that were shown at the L.A. show were considered

c o n c e p tcars, wenoticed thatthe interiord e s i g ns e e m e dproductionready. Thefeature weliked themost wasthe center

console, and how it was again tiltedtoward the driver. That one featuremay make the new 6 Series the most popular premium personal performance luxury vehicle.

The power trains were notannounced; though BMW’s tried andtrue twin-turbo V8 will most likely bethe standard engine, coupled with an eight-speed manual shiftable auto-matic transmission. While weenjoyed the six-speed manual transmission on the 2004 645, I suspect that the new 6 will not have amanual shifter as an option.

The harsh reviews of the firstgeneration X3 kept me away from thatvehicle for a year. Then I had a chanceto review one. I promptly learned thatthe mainstream automotive media isalmost as lame as the mainstreamgeneral media. When the X3 waslaunched, the mass auto media treated any vehicle that didn’t have aLexus badge as a second rate prod-uct. The more enlightened declaredthe X3 as an ideal “yuppie” mobile.Smaller than the X5 but having thedriving dynamics of the 3 Series, theX3 seemed to be the right-size vehiclefor young or small families. We performed a dual-coast evaluation –driving the X3 on the Pacific CoastHighway and on Skyline Drive. We

were all surprised and pleased withthe driving dynamics, versatility, andfuel economy. After writing the vehiclereview, we purchased an X3.

While the X3 drove like a BMW,it didn’t have the same level of designexecution of interior refinement as therest of the BMW product line. Withmonotone interior designs, as well as an uncharacteristic use of hardplastic and large exterior body panelgaps, the X3 had a somewhat “cheaper” aura. I’m happy to reportthe new X3 brings that product up thesame level of benchmark refinement

The 2011 6 Series and 2011 X3 at the 2011 LA Auto Show: Better Than Heidi Klum

model. The rear seating area is alsomuch improved. The BMW design-ers have learned a few things fromdesigning the rear seating areas ofboth the X5 and X6 and have incorporated some of those smalltouches to make the X3 rear seatingarea even more pleasant.

The rear cargo compartmentalso shows that the BMW designershave studied how North Americansuse their vehicles. The area is now acavernous, highly usable cube thateasily swallows the typical family’scargo. The cargo area now features

foldable hooks for tote bags and theobnoxious flimsy plastic shoppingbags.

The exterior has a refined, integrated look, just like the X5 andX6. When approaching the new X3,the vehicle no longer appears to be an afterthought, but rather a proud member of the BMW product line.

As with the 645i, our first X3featured a manual transmission, which is not available on the new X3.However two versions of BMW’sfamous in-line six, with and withouttwin turbo charging, will be the

engine choices. We hope we’ll have achance to take drive both vehiclessoon. Perhaps we’ll be invited for thepress launch for both vehicles.

We did notice that when Ms.Klum made her entrance to the VWdisplay, her handlers steered her farfrom the BMW display. As we saidearlier, had she seem the new 6,chances are very good that she wouldhave jumped ship. Hmm – the newVW Jetta or the new BMW 6. Seemslike a no-brainer, eh?

Oh, and let me just say one lastthing about Tommy K. He made

and design execution one expectsfrom a BMW. The center console, instrument panel, and dash receivedquite a bit of attention. There is a distinct upscale feeling when sittingin this interior, vice the previousmodel. Rather than the previous“pop-up” design, the navigationscreen is integrated in to the dash, much like the rest of the BMW line. The dash and center console now feature mahogany or bamboo inserts. The straight grain from these materials give the cabin an airy, openfeel that was lacking in the earlier

untimely exits at both Chrysler andGM once his bosses learned that hewas destroying their brand equity withtheir loyal buyer base as well as theeliminating media good will. ForBMW NA’s sake, Tommy K shouldface that same fate as soon as possible. Besides, Fisker could usehis talents.

(Left) The new X3 interior has amore refined, upscale feeling overprevious model. Note the baghooks in the X3 cargo bay.

BMW X1 sDrive20dExcellent Mileage Meets Sport and Utility

Text and photos by Samuli Salminen

Being a BMW driver for 18 years and having owned both rear- and all-wheel-drive models, I decided to go for a brand new BMW X1.

It was launched in the fall of 2009 into the so-called “crossover class.”

Because our family’s transporta-tion needs changed quite a bitas a result of my new job at GE

Global Research in northeasternMunich, I started looking to replaceour 330Cd. It was a diesel, and a veryeconomical one at that – once reach-ing a very solid 42 mpg. Its 6-speed manual with overdrive, andmy rather easy driving style alsohelped when it came to fuel efficiency. The beautiful Alpinweiss E46 coupehad only 53,000 miles on the clockwhen its time to go had alreadyarrived. The search for alternativeswas here.

Good friends of mine fromFinland, Tuomas Vaaranta andJaakko Pitkäjärvi managed to con-vince me the BMW X1 could be thenext one for us. We are mountainsports enthusiasts and frequently setout on touring, skiing, and hikingtrips. We concluded the while commuting remained our numberone priority, having enough space forthe gear we needed for our weekendtours was a close second. We lookedat the 1 Series and 3 Series – I haveowned every 3 Series model exceptthe E21– but somehow the E90/91did not convince us. The E92 couldhave been an alternative, but we simply were not in love with it. The 1 Series was just too small, andclearly unable to fulfill our family’ssecond requirement.

The sales representative atBMW Niederlassung Munich was anextremely professional gentlemannamed Mr. Huber and he understoodour requirements completely. Heguided us toward the BMW X1 andbingo – we had found our newestBimmer. The only possible fly in theointment was the vehicle’s all-wheeldrive, which could present a slight conflict with our first requirement, asI was seriously looking for low fuelconsumption. Folks who sell all-wheel-drive vehicles seldom touttheir products’ mpg as a sellingpoint. No worries, I was assured, theX1 line-up (in Europe) includes thesDrive rear-drive series, which wehappily selected. The official fuelconsumption figures are well withinthe range I was looking for – crisisaverted.

For the X1, BMW offers three2-liter diesel engines with differentpower output. We selected the middle one with 177 PS (174 hp and350 Nm (258 ft.lbs) of torque, whichis more than enough for a vehiclethis size. And best of all, the maximum torque is availablebetween 1,750-3,000 rpm. The X1sDrive20d accelerates from 0-100km/h (0-62 mph) in only 8.1 seconds and its top speed is 218km/h (135 mph).

BMW has included lots of thelatest technology as standard equip-

ment into the X1. They call itEfficient Dynamics, and it includesthe Automatic Start-Stop system, which shuts the engine off automati-cally in the following conditions: 1) Outside temperature has to beabove +3 Celsius (35 F), 2) Enginecoolant temperature needs to beabove +40 Celsius (72 F), 3) Gearmust be on neutral and clutchreleased and 4) vehicle speed isbelow 2 km/h. What for? To save thediesel fuel obviously – and to notcause greenhouse emissions whilejust idling in traffic or at a stop light. When the clutch is again engaged,

(Above and Below) The X1sDrive20d is prepared for the winterwith Nokian WR G2 winter tires(mounted on amazingly good-looking steelies). Winter finallyarrived to Bavaria after this articlewas submitted – I can confirm theX1 is excellent to drive in the snow even with RWD.

the engine starts up automatically. InEurope the traffic light cycle is a littledifferent by going from red via yellowto green. That gives the driverenough time to react as the yellowsignal means “get set.” BMW has

conducted studies how the Start-Stop affects to the consumption andhas come up with maximum of 7%savings while commuting in the citytraffic.

BMW has also included brakeenergy regeneration as a standardpart of its Efficient Dynamics pack-age. This means the braking energyis transferred to electrical energy forcharging the battery. The alternatordoes not need to be loaded all thetime – again, saving fuel. Anotherinnovation is the gearshift advisor, both up and down. This is displayedin the instrument panel and recom-mends shifting points (both up anddown) according to how the vehicleis being driven. At times I have been

amazed how low the engine isrevving when I am advised toengage the next gear. I believe thestrong low-rpm torque – which isvery typical of modern Dieselengines – helps to achieve it.

Do these tricks pay off? Iwould say yes, they certainly do.

BMW X1 sDrive20d

(Above) The iDrive has very sophisticated built-in connectivity capabilities. You can check your current location's weather, book hotels, see web cam photos, etc. When I had my Commodore 64 28 years ago, I would have never guessed it. (Below) When the snow melts in Bavariathe 17” x 7.5” 5-spoke stock wheels go back on the X1.

BMW AG.

Over the 11 tanks of fuel consumedsince we got the X1, our averageconsumption has been 45 mpg, withone tank coming in at an even 50mpg. That mark was achieved whilecommuting, and included 40% onnormal roads (Bundesstrasse) and60% on highways (Autobahn). The

X1 has now roughly 12,000 km inthe clock (roughly 7,500 miles), andwe are hoping for even higher efficiency as the engine adds a fewmore miles.

The X1 also has some prettyneat gadgets available. While we didnot order a fully loaded model, some

of the options are certainly worthmentioning. One of these is theBMW Service system, which integrates into the high-resolutiondisplay and latest-generation iDrive. It has S.O.S. calling functionality and

computer or other device and thenupload it to your car. The car’s navi-gation system would then guide youbased on the planned route. TheiPod connectivity and USB stickaudio play capabilities are today’stechnology as well as the mobilephone connectivity over Bluetooth.I’m sure some of this is included injust about any new car, but I considermyself an “Oldskool” driver and thisnew technology has certainlyimpressed me.

How is the X1 to drive?

Certainly there is a difference if Iwould compare the ex-330Cd andX1. The E46 coupe was a sports carwith a fairly stiff suspension while X1has a relatively standard suspensionand is therefore more comfortable. The vehicle boasts impressive cornering capabilities, nimbly handling small and curvy roads atrelatively good speeds (60 mph). While we sacrificed a little of the rawpower offered by the 330Cd, I believethe gains in fuel economy more thanoffset the loss. And all-wheel drivemodels with xDrive have lots of extra

options for improving handling. Oneof these is called PerformanceControl, which adapts the currentdriving condition to the all-wheeldrive system by distributing thepower and torque on a wheel-by-wheel basis. This improves the driving dynamics dramatically, especially on more extreme roadconditions.

The interior of the X1 followsnicely the current sleek BMW design. It is very functional and stylish, and itcan be reasonably compared to theinterior of a 3 Series coupe.

BMW X1 sDrive20d

(Above) Interior of the X1 is verystylish and can be customized, e.g.with a wide selection of differenttrim panels. Seats can be selectedbetween standard and sport seats.(Left) A few more buttons havebeen added to the iDrive controlunit – they act as shortcuts to themost often used applications.

also Packet Data transfer capabilitywithout any additional subscriptions. The latter means in practice you canimplement lots of Web Services-based systems including, for example, the hotel search system. The GPS knows your location andyou can define search parameterssuch as the price range for yourdesired accommodations. The system searches using the WebServices the alternatives and dis-plays them. It even shows them inthe map. When you click one of theresults, you’ll get contact details, description and pricing. It also tellsyou which credit cards are accepted– very important! With one click ofiDrive knob you’ll start the naviga-tion. Easy! Another cool feature isthe weather report with nice Web-cam pictures from the selected loca-tion – to see what the current weath-er conditions look like. If purchasedas an option, all of this is included

into the car – with no additional 3Gdata subscriptions required. BMWhas also implemented the Web-based route planner for the profes-sional navigation system where youcan plan your route using your home

I still sit a lot, but now I sitbehind the wheel of a truck as a professional driver. Bruce Hall, who is the caretaker ofhis late father’s 1972 2002tii, ownsApplewood Motorcar Transport inGerrardstown, West Virginia. The2002tii is how Bruce and I met. Some years ago, I heard aboutBruce’s father Jim, or Herb as he wasknown by some, who lived in thetown of Mink Shoals nearCharleston, West Virginia. Intriguedthere was another 1972 2002tii inWest Virginia (I bought my first2002tii in Martinsburg, WestVirginia), I made contact with Jimand had a nice chat. I told Jim I waslooking for some cloth braided fuelline. Jim offered to have his son,Bruce, look for some in his travels;he delivers cars, Jim said. So a fewweeks later, a meter of cloth coveredfuel line arrived in the mail. Timepasses and I lose track of Mr. Hall.

Then last summer, DavidYandro, of the Lane Auto Museumand friend, e-mailed me photos of avery original Verona 1972 2002tiibeing shown at the KeenelandConcours in Louisville, Kentucky. Itwas Jim’s car but now in the care ofhis son, Bruce. With some work, I

found Bruce’s e-mail and sent him anote with complimentary commentsabout his 2002tii. In the course ofe-mail exchanges, I mentioned toBruce I had my commercial driver’slicense and if he ever needed anyhelp “moving metal” I would like anopportunity to help out his company.

A trip to meet Bruce and hiswife Judi (and his car) ended with

Bruce offering me the opportunity tomove cars for him. Applewood’sfleet consists of a couple single-cartrailers, four double-car trailers, afour-car trailer plus a full race-ready18 wheel rig. All of the trailers areenclosed, and there are enough tractors to pull them all. So after theobligatory drug and backgroundtests, I arrived in Gerrardstown for

yet another “first day of work.” Day one and Bruce instructs me

to “get the red single trailer ready, weare headed to Manhattan.” Beingfamiliar with a pick-up and singletrailer, this was a familiar task. Sure,I was a little nervous but I felt confi-dent. As I hook up the trailer, I realize we are hauling a factoryLamborghini Gallardo SuperLeggarabeing returned to the Manhattandealership after being on loan to Carand Driver for a test drive and photoshoot. Bruce starts out “under thewindshield” as truckers say, but aswe stop for fuel he moves to the passenger seat and I get “under thewindshield” for my first stint. Fillingout my log and completing the necessary IFTA form as we move pasteach state line, we reach New YorkCity. Now, I have driven through theLincoln Tunnel many times but neverattached to a trailer holding a nearlyhalf million-dollar car in its belly. Wepass through the tunnel and arrive atthe dealership. Double-parking asall the delivery trucks do inManhattan, we lower the gate andBruce fires the Lambo with a spine

that a hybrid?” Not registering hiscomment, I continue watching aspassers-by continue taking photos ofthe car. Then the fellow associatesme with the Lambo and taps me onthe shoulder. “Hey buddy,” he asks,“is that a hybrid?” While I’m trying tounderstand why he’s asking that, hesays, “it must be a hybrid, it has nogearshift!” Oh, I tell him, it has paddle shifters and show him where

they are. “Never seen that before,”he says as he shuffles off shakinghis head. I do that head shakingthing often working for Applewood.

Just four months later, I haddriven (well, I’d backed them off andput them on trailers) Ferraris old andnew, several Mercedes Benz’sincluding the brand new SL AMGand a stunning 1965 280SL withless than 28,000 miles,

Lamborghinis fresh from the Port ofBaltimore, Lotus Evoros with theirsolid carbon fiber bottoms that onlyreveal the front swing arms, an AstonMartin DB6, Austin Healey 100/M(M being the factory prepared racemodel), a old Jaguar XKE convert-ible, a BMW Z8 Alpina, Morgans,Alfas, Porsche 356s, a Bandini andFiats, one being Bruce’s FiatShellette. The Shellette is one of only 80 ever built. I have evenmoved a 1904 InternationalHarvester High Wheeler.

During the course of working atApplewood, I have also helped Bruceand his paint guy, Jim Rizzi, the bestchip guy around in my opinion, workon the Shellette, a Porsche 914/6and Bruce’s 2002tii. Bruce started asa restoration shop but he is followingthe market into more transport thanrestoration. Jim is masterfully finishing up a couple of restoration

projects that include the Porsche, anAvanti and three vintage bikes, a1927 Indian Scout Police model, a1938 Zundapp and a Jawa. So having driven and worked on somefine cars, this brings me to the pointof the story.

The spark plug wiring harness with diagnostic plug, NORMA clamps on the plastic intake tubes, and the bulbous bulge in the radiator hose are features often lost on the 1972 tiis.

Finally – I hear you say. After driving, albeit very short

distances, as fine a stable of motor-cars as anyone could assemble, Ipause to compare them all to myfaithful 1972 2002tii. me like a 2002, was the 1965 MB280SL. It was as tight as a banjostring and smooth as silk. But, it isthe BMW 2002 that I measure all ofthese cars to and its own exhaustiveway, the 2002 still has my heart. Ithas Bruce’s heart too. His dad’s tii isstill his favorite car and Bruce hasseen and driven many of the finestever built in his 20-plus years ofhauling them around the country.

According to Bruce, “myfather’s first 2002 was a 1969 modelin ‘ugly green.’ I don’t think this wasfactory name for the color but it surely reflected my view. That 2002‘ugly green’ became the meat in awreck sandwich and declared totaled. The only thing I have from that car isthe tool kit and one hubcap.”

Once Bruce’s dad received theinsurance check, he set out to replacethe 2002 with another car. Bruce told

his dad about the new tii that wasgoing to be available and after muchdiscussion his dad made his deci-sion to at least go look at one. Theyheaded for the closest dealer, Nida’sBMW in Huntington, West Virginia, and placed the order.

“It took a long time to negotiatethe options and the final price. Theoptions were a sunroof, alloywheels, special seat material, antifreeze and XAS tires. Dad did getthem to include an AM radio at nocharge,” Bruce recalls. They paidthe $1,000 down payment and leftfor home which was about an houraway.

On the way back home theystopped and talked to a friend aboutthe pending arrival of the car. Thefriend, Henry Payne of Porschefame, told Jim he was going toGermany on business and if it wasok with him he would take delivery ofthe car in Frankfurt, drive the carduring his visit and then take it to theport for shipment to Baltimore. Afterconsidering the savings, Jim readilyagreed and the deal was set.

A few weeks later Jim receivednotice the car arrived and was readyfor pick up. The whole family, allthree of them, headed to Baltimore todrive the car back to Charleston,West Virginia. Once the car was safeat home the family used it inautocrosses, hill climbs and rallying

as well as being a regular driver ontours and just all around fun trips.Every time the tii went out it wascleaned before going back into thegarage.

The car became a reward toyoung family members. As the children in the extended familyobtained their driver’s licenses, theywere allowed to go for a ride withBruce’s dad in the passenger seat. The odometer has now reachedabout 47,000 with just about 1,800of those being added in the last 20years.

In October, 2008 Jim Hall wentto the big car show in the sky andpassed to a better life leaving Bruceto care for the BMW. In his honor,Bruce decided to let the rest of the“gear-head” world enjoy his Dad’s2002tii by regularly showing it. The

car won a special award at theClassics on the James, the Best inClass award at the Hilton HeadConcours in 2009, and First in Classat the Ault Concours in 2010. Thecar also earned honors and awards atthe Glenmoor Gathering Concours, and in the Preservation Class at theHilton Head Concours. When the caris shown it is shown with the originalbuyers order, window sticker, books, service records, tools, dealerbrochure that adds to its originalityand prominence. The car is not onlya show winner many times over; ithas become the standard of original-ity for a U.S. version 1972 2002tii.

The car continues to be registered under the original title;therefore, the little tii is still a one-owner car and worthy of being thecenterpiece of any family’s treasure.

years, the motor was making morethan 315 bhp (up from the stock 240)and I was getting around SummitPoint Raceway quite quickly. I wasalso getting pretty competent with awrench. I actually contemplated strip-ping the car and going club racing atone point. But I got married in '06 andfor whatever reason I seldom got out tothe track after that. About two yearsago, I faced the fact that my hardcoretrack days were pretty much behindme, and decided to return the car tocomfortable weekend street duty. So Iremoved the tall rear race wing and rollbar, went back to stock rubber bush-

Ultimate Owner: Garrett WilliamsProfile: 1997 Techno Violet M3

I became the second owner of this carin 2000. It was my second E36 andfourth BMW, having owned an E21320i, an E28 528e and an E36 325i,previously. I bought it with 31k mileson the clock for use as my daily driver.Upon getting the car, I immediatelyknew I wanted to keep it a very longtime. But I had never even changed theoil on a car before, so I started attend-ing the NCC's DIY days. Very soonthereafter, I was doing most of themaintenance on the car myself, alongwith some simple modifications, likean ECIS cold air intake system.

While selling a set of wheels frommy old 325, the buyer informed methat he was a driving instructor for various organizations and told meabout Summit Point Raceway. Heurged me to take the car to one of their"Friday at the Track" events so I couldbetter appreciate what it could do. Idid, and quickly became hooked. I began modifying the car for trackduty, including a roll bar, EurosportPerformance Schrick Cam Kit, GroundControl coil-over suspension,StopTech big brake kit, etc. After a few

ings in some key places, raised theride height a few cms, and upgradedthe stock Harman Kardon stereo system to include a BMW CD43 headunit, Bavarian Sound Works speakersand a custom 300 watt RockfordFosgate subwoofer system.

After successfully changing thehead gasket, rebuilding the VANOSand replacing the hydraulic lifters atabout 150k miles, I decided it was timeto take the motor to the next level. Themotor had every bolt-on modificationpossible, so the next step was forcedinduction. I chose Active Autowerke'sLevel II 12 psi Supercharger kit

because it was intercooled, used aquiet and compact yet potent HKSblower head with planetary gear drivesystem, and would be reliable enoughto track on the rare occasion I had the time to do so. I did not want thecomplexity, cost, difficult installation, lower reliability and poor throttleresponse often associated with turbokits. I installed the supercharger kit in my garage over the course of aweekend. It included a custom re-mapped engine ECU, larger fuelinjectors, a more powerful fuel pump, remote reservoir fluid cooler and, ofcourse, the intercooled superchargerand associated intercooler piping. Thecar now has more than 450 bhp and400 ft.lbs of torque, with a very smoothlinear power-delivery and crisp throttleresponse. Top speed is gear-limited tojust over 175 mph.

To go along with the increasedstress placed on the motor, I installedthe semi-dry sump oil pan and pumpfrom a BMW S54 engine (e46 M3)along with an S54 oil filter housingand custom Setrab oil cooler. Theresult is the maintenance of proper oiltemperature and pressure under eventhe most extreme race track conditionsand the complete elimination of thedreaded "lifter tick" that the S50/52engines are known to exhibit. At thesame time, I replaced the engine's

connecting rod bearings. I similarlyupgraded the engine coolant system, including a Stewart water pump, relocated European-spec reservoir andall-aluminum radiator. I managed toget out to Summit Point a few monthsago and had a blast playing with thecar's new power.

The car now has 163k miles on itand yet is better than new in almostevery way. It has been modified with a"no compromise" approach, and withan eye toward an end result that eventhe engineers and designers at BMWcould appreciate. For example, when Iadded the much shorter final driveratio (3.64) for quicker acceleration, I also installed a European-spec 6-speed transmission so that highwaycruising comfort and mpg would notbe sacrificed. When I installed thesupercharger kit, which added weightto the nose of the car, I also installed acomposite hood, which offset thatweight gain.

With the higher power, a new andupgraded clutch was required. A very

adjust fore/aft for stock-like aesthetics, luxury and convenience. The 340mmGerman Raid steering wheel is muchsmaller and thicker than the stockBMW wheel, but retains the safety of a

stout Southbend Stage 3 clutch wasselected because of its smooth stock-like engagement. Similarly, the veryfree-flowing Active Autowerke header-back exhaust system was custom-

modified to ensure comfortable volume levels without compromisingthe car's blistering performance. TheCobra Misano seats in the car aremade of carbon fiber and shed 80 lbsof weight, but are covered in matchingdove gray leather and fully recline and

full-sized air bag. Instead of installing highly con-

spicuous A-pillar gauges to monitorsupercharger function, a PLX Devicesmulti-gauge is hidden in the rear viewmirror and simultaneously displaysair/fuel ratio, manifold boost pressure

and vacuum. Similarly, the car's shinyaluminum front-mounted intercooler, supercharger fluid cooler and customengine oil cooler are painted stealthblack and installed without modifica-tion to the stock front bumper to retaina stock appearance to all but the mosttrained eyes. The result is a car thatmost people do not recognize as ahighly-modified custom vehicle with apower to weight ratio superior to any-thing ever offered in a BMW show-room. And for the driver and passen-gers, the car is equally comfortable andfunctional in D.C. traffic, on a 3-hour trip to the beach, or lappingSummit Point Raceway.

The car has evolved with me, andI with it. I've made some great friendsand learned a tremendous amountabout BMWs over the years of owning, maintaining, modifying and trackingthe M3. It’s been a great experience.

40 years ago – Feb 71: In the beginning, there was no magazine, there was nonewsletter. In fact, there wasn’t even a National Capital Chapter forty years ago. A letter signed by Patty Cavallero dated February 3, 1971 announced efforts werebeing made to form a national capital area chapter of the BMW CCA. Presumably, the letter was sent to local members of the national club, and maybe stuck on windshields. Interested parties were asked to call Ric Cavallero or Matt Daleyabout a February 28 meeting.

35 years ago – Jan 76: The page one story, written by David Roach, reportedon chapter member Nick Craw clinching the 1975 IMSA RS series championshipat Daytona with the Miller and Norburn BMW 2002. The feature IMSA Camel GTrace included three 3.5 CSLs entered by BMW Motorsports with drivers HansStuck Jr., Brian Redman, and Sam Posey. Stuck didn’t finish, while Redman andPosey finished 2nd and 3rd to the “monster” Corvette of John Greenwood. Chapterofficers were President Estelle Watts, VP Dave Toy, Secretary Bob Critchlow, andTreasurer Carol Kingsbury. Technical chairperson Ken Wright reported on the techsession held at Tischer BMW in Laurel. The Treasurer’s report for December 1975showed $95 in income and $122 in expenses, leaving a bank balance of $132.Oktoberfest ’76 chairperson Chet Kingsbury reported the event has been acceptedby the national club and would be held in October at the Washingtonian CountryClub, near Gaithersburg. Planned events were a drivers’ school at Summit Point,an autocross, a rally, and a Concours d’Elegance. Some things never change. Twoservice reports on Wagonworks were favorable, althoughone job took four months while waiting for parts. Of the tworeports on Heishman BMW, one was favorable, and one notso. A member said he paid $40 for a choke adjustment, oiland filter change and brake pad change. Afterwards, the idlewas too low and the car pulled to one side under braking.Heishman finally corrected the latter problem by fittingRepco pads. Another member reported North Star Motorsin Rockville replaced his front brake pads for $23.85 includ-ing labor. The classified ads included a “perfect” 1973 2002tii for $5,000. That would be a steal today. Feb 76: Thisissue opened with photos and biographies of our chapterofficers – all avid autocrossers and rallyists. Minutes of theJanuary meeting announced plans for a championshipautocross in March, a championship rally in April, a drivers’school with the Porsche club in May, and a spring tour. TheOktoberfest drivers’ school would be conducted by Bill Scott and should grant probationary IMSA racing licenses. The minutes also mentioned that we may loseour meeting place, the Diamondhead Restaurant in Bethesda, until the club spendsmore money at the bar. In part one of a series on BMW etiquette, David Roachwrote about how to steer cocktail party chatter around to the fact you own a BMW,even if most of the participants will not have any idea what a BMW is. Of the several service reports on VOB BMW, some were good and some were not so

good. The service manager, Lothar Schuettler, always seemed to garner goodremarks. A BMW 3.5 CSL driven by Peter Gregg and Brian Redman had won the Daytona 24-Hour race, 14 laps ahead of Al Holbert’s Porsche. A rally seminarconducted by the Washington Rally Club included a “dynamic and fun-filled” presentation by chapter member Mike Leeper on tricks and traps.

30 years ago – Jan 81: A tech session conducted by Rick Price on roadsiderepairs would be held at Precision BMW, Fiat, and Subaru in Frederick. A two-daySummit Point drivers’ school was announced for May 2-3. Only BMW CCA members driving BMWs were eligible to enter. It was reported that Marylandplanned to start testing cars for emissions in 1982. A tech tip said that use of thePurolator FCO 201 oil filter, being sold at discount chains, was prone to failure andnot recommended, whereas use of the Purolator PC 201 was fine. Technical arti-cles reprinted from other chapter newsletters discussed living with fuel Injection, and valve adjustments. John Hartge wrote about adding a right-side rear-view mir-

ror to your BMW. Another tip suggested carrying a supplyof dimes in your car for those times your car breaks down inthe middle of the night and you need to make a phone call.Who knew there would be cell phones one day? The newchapter officers were President Bill Loftin, VP GordonKimpel, Treasurer Chuck Garrish, Secretary – well, theywere still searching. Feb 81: The cover drawing gave apossible shape for the front wheel drive BMW that Road &Track magazine reported would be introduced in the 1984model year. The President’s column wondered why the elections for our national office positions never have morethat one candidate for each position. Current club by-lawsseem to be written to keep things that way. Editors Ira andBernice Winthrop wrote that they continue to seek articlesfrom the membership. Technical articles on recharging airconditioning systems and use of gasohol appeared. Tom

McGurn of BMW NA wrote that gasohol should not be used in BMWs until theycomplete further testing. John Hartge wrote a review of the National HighwaySafety Administration’s free Consumer’s Guide to Car Buying, better known as TheCar Book. BMWs from those days did not fare very well in the eyes of our U.S.Government. An article by Larry Porter of the Portland chapter gave tips for tuningand modifying the 320i for better performance. A BMW trivia quiz pointed out thatthe limited-production 1800 TI/SA (200 units sold to licensed racers only) came inone color, yet had four different rear differential ratios available.

25 years ago – Jan/Feb 86: President Les Adams announced the chapter nowhad a “hotline” phone for a recorded message to alert members of last-minuteevents, cancelations, etc. I guess Al Gore hadn’t invented the internet yet. Les’message also introduced the other board members and various chairpersons of ouractivities. Event reports included the Hot Shoe Summit Point school for

experienced drivers. It brought back the tag-team relay race. Other events coveredwere the Annual Election Dinner at the Mustache Café in Alexandria, and an openhouse at Excluservice in Rockville. David Roach reported on his participation inthe MG 1000 International Rally with his Friday Afternoon Rally Team partner MikeLeeper. Accompanied by a big bottle of George Dickel, for evening use only ofcourse, and some very good luck, they finished 4th overall in Mike’s 2002tii. Thisevent ran through western New York and southern Ontario. A humorous AutoWeekarticle about the new BMW/Skip Barber driver school was reprinted. John Hartgeprovided information on the prices and standard equipment upgrades on the 1986BMWs, and Bob Ford wrote about his importation of a gray-market Alpina 635CSi.Dan Tackett of the San Diego chapter wrote an article about driving, and the perti-nent laws concerning driving, in Germany. It was significant that 75% of U.S.licensed drivers, when taking the license test in Germany, failed.

20 yeas ago – Jan/Feb 91: The annual election was held at the Old Town BoatClub in Alexandria. Dinner was supplied by Helga’s Genuine German Feast. Theelection had Dwight Derr (President), Jonathan Jones (VP), and Mike Early(Secretary) returning for another year. Joining them was our new Treasurer,Jennifer Nazarko. Our one-day drivers’ school at Summit Point in October startedwith a track walk of the Chute (turn 4). The two groups ran five half-hour sessionseach. Our MWCSCC championship autocross at the National Training Systems lotin Laurel saw SCCA national champion Bob Matthews set the fastest time with hishighly modified Corvette. Fastest BMW was Cory Laws (E12 530i). John Hartge

gave his impressions of a test drive of the 525i with the new M50 engine. He figured the E36 325i which was to be introduced with this same engine in 1992would be a rocket. Woody Hair wrote a ‘how-to’ article discussing Heel ‘n’ Toedownshifting. We reprinted an article by Pete Lautares of the Tidewater chapterabout his experiences participating in our Summit Point drivers’ school. Our drivers’ school insurance, provided by the national club, now required helmets thathave a recent Snell safety certification. Also, students were no longer allowed togive friends or family rides on the track at the end of the day. The 1989 MWCSCCautocross novice class champion was Brian Hair (325is). Sharon Miller’s report onour Highway Safety School was emphatic that everyone should do one. A tongue-in-check article on the 225i to be introduced on April 1, said the president of BMWNA announced it would actually be known as the 225. It seems they had finallyused up the stock pile of little chrome “i”s that are no longer needed since every-one knows all BMWs have had fuel injection for over 10 years. Gary Ridge of theBoston Chapter reported on the inspection and care of alloy wheels.

15 years ago – Jan/Feb 96: Teenager Jennifer Skene treated readers to herexperiences and the expert instruction by Mr. David Ford at our Jefferson Circuitdrivers’ school. The pictures that accompanied the article showed it had snowed abit on the eve of the school. Dave Lassalle took fastest BMW (’89 325is) at a

In the January/February 2006 dB there was an article with photos andclass winners of the Deutsche Marque Concours d’Elegance that was held inMay 2005.

Deutsche Marque Autocross held at the NVCC Manassas Campus. Mike Gaylepenned an article on the “tweaks” he had made to his ’93 318is. Looking back, itwas a pretty intensive list of modifications. Competition Corner reported on arumor that BMW was going to buy the McLaren Formula 1 team as a quick meansto get back into the sport. A full page ad for Formula Motorsports Park at NewMorgan, Pennsylvania was seeking members at $350. The ad included anendorsement by Mario Andretti, “Join me and my family at Formula Club, the onlyfacility like it in the world.” There were reviews of two videos – the 9-minute“Rendezvous” by the French director Claude LaLouch, and the ’89 Carrera Classicwhich featured in-car views of two M6s entered by Cunningham BMW of SanDiego. Co-chairperson Jennifer Nazarko wrote an appeal for volunteers and spon-sors for the Oktoberfest event we were to host in August. The classified ads includ-ed a ’72 2002 listed by Carmen for $8,000.

10 years ago – Jan/Feb 01: The newly elected chapter officers were Rich Beebe(President), Mike Wendell (VP), Ronnie Lewis (Treasurer), and Lucy Beebe(Secretary). The Autocross Committee reviewed the 2000 season and final pointstandings were provided. Eric Carnell wrote a well-thought out piece on the nega-tives of modifying your BMW for track use, and explains the benefits of spending$2,500 on drivers’ schools. Bill Brochu (535i) was the fastest of 46 BMWs in ourNovember autocross. A photo collage of our 2000 activities filled two pages.

5 years ago – Jan/Feb 06: Editor Rob Williams’ column discussed his closeencounter with a deer. Rob concluded cleaning deer poop from the hood and wind-shield of the car was preferable to fixing major body damage. Roy Morris,Chairman of our Drivers’ School Steering Committee, presented a valuable discus-sion on the consequences of adding a roll bar to a street car, and the use of r-compound tires by an inexperienced driver. In the better-late-than-never category, there was an article with photos and class winners of the Deutsche MarqueConcours d’Elegance that was held in May 2005. The Judges’ Choice was RodPaine’s 1983 528e and the Best of Marque was John McWilliams’ 1974 2002 tii. Along overdue tech session at American Stripping Company taught members aboutblasting and powder coating. No, it did not involve female dancers, explosives, ormake-up. Chapter member J. C. Chaney Jr. was invited to the press introductionof the new E90 325i. He thought the latest 3 Series was better in every way, including the cup holders. Competition Corner reported that PTG of Winchester,VA, will return to the American Le Mans Series after one year in the Speed WorldChallenge series and two years in the Rolex Grand-Am series. Each of these seriesrequired M3s built to different specifications. James Sheridan (E36 323is) was thefastest BMW at the final 2005 SCCA autocross and John Hartge’s 1988 M5 garnered our 2005 Car of the Year award. By coincidence, John’s M5 was advertised for sale in the classified section.
