A LIGHTER MOMENT

Famous Inspirational speaker said: "Best years of my life were spent in the arms of a women, who wasn't , my wife" Audience was in shock & silence.

He added: "She was my mother"A big round of applause & laughter!

Now a very daring Husband tried to crack this at home. After a dinner, he said loudly to his wife in the kitchen: "Best years of my life were spent in the arms of a woman, who wasn't my wife"

Standing for a moment trying to recall the second line of that speaker.

By the time he gained his senses, he was on a Hospital bed, recovering from burns of boiling water! Moral: Don't Copy, if you can't Paste.

DEDICATION TO ALL NURSES

Let me direct you to a horrible scene that has all aspects of a feverish dream. One Friday on Calvary, like a hospital ward, three men were dying amongst our Lord It was the worst case of neglect ever recorded. These

patients, whose pains, Pontius Pilate ordered

Now the one in the centre our attention would claim Jesus of Nazareth the chart gave his name.

Some cardiac specialists examine and find Excessive love for all mankind. Now you who are Nurses, just listen to this Unsterilized Nails pierced his feet and his wrist His neck was swollen from blows which men dealt But no soothing ointment to lessen the welt No cold compresses were applied to his eyes, The world greatest love, Just hangs there and dies No Morphine was given ,no tourniquet set

As Jesus Christ is bleeding to death The chart then concluded, as further we see The sad man of Nazareth dies about three His visitors then walk slowly away. His mother, Magdalene and John so they say Now don't blame the Jews for this frightful Neglect Our sin did it, then our sins do it yet

This treatment of Christ demands reparation It falls to you Nurses, of this generation To do for your patients what you think should For that man in the centre who was God's son. It will thrill his angels and please his too So just keep at it till your life in through And when after death. Your soul goes on high He will cap you again in home in the sky.

CHEWING GUM EXPANDS MIND

Chewing is an exercise. Do you agree? Yes it is not tough like other exercises. But the benefits of chewing gum, many does not know.

Chewing gum improves short and long term memory by as much as 35%. How does chewing gum stimulates one's memory? They are working on two theories. One is that the gentle exercise of chewing raises a person's heart rate, which increases the flow of oxygen to the brain. Another is that chewing trigger the release of insulin, a natural chemical that stimulates a section of the brain involved in memory. The act of chewing speeds up our heart beat and blood pressure just enough to wake up both left-and right hemispheres to work together. Chewing gum produces more glucose and disposal of more CO2. Thus it improves memory.

Some teachers encourages students to chew gum during tests to help increase alertness and concentration. Chewing gum may provide an outlet for frustration and irritation .Chewing gum has a stress reducing effect.

You won't believe it also helps the adults to eat less. According to some studies the adults who chewed the gum ate 36 calories less of the snack the adults who did not chew the gum. According to a group of scientists chewing gum can burn about 11 calories per hour.

Chewing gum increases saliva which is the most important of oral health and powerful protection of the oral cavity. Sugar free chewing does not cause tooth decay. Chewing gum freshens breath, whitens teeth by reducing stains and preventing stains from accumulating and reduces plaque.

Chewing can take away sleepiness. People become more attentive and feel more alert. Chewing gum that is sweetened with Xylito does not raise blood sugar.

But in Indian scenario chewing gum in front of elders or while speaking to them is considered as bad manner.

CELEBRATING PREGNANCY

The Essence Of The Traditional Indian Celebration (Unity In Diversity)

India is a land of celebrations. And what's better reason to celebrate than the arrival of a new baby? The third trimester is particularly eventful for the first-time mother, as close family and friends gather together to wish her well for the impending delivery.

The common thread in India is to bless the expecting mom and pray for the well being of the mother and the baby. It is the mom-to-be who is showered with blessings and bounty - cash, clothes or even jewellery - a sort of a “mother-to-be shower”. Also, traditionally it is attended by the women-folk.

According to the Indian tradition, it is considered inauspicious to buy any clothes or other items for the baby before the baby is born (possibly because in olden days, the percentage of babies dying during childbirth was high).

Tamil Tradition

In the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu, a traditional ceremony called the Seemandam is held during the fifth, seventh or ninth month of pregnancy. It is typically hosted by the in-laws of the new mom- to- be on an auspicious day by a priest. Only married women are invited to the ceremony. The expectant mother is gifted a new saree by her parents and in-laws, turmeric paste is applied on her face and hands and her hair is decorated with flowers. Few drops of a special herbal juice is squeezed into the nostrils of the expectant mother and mantras are chanted to protect the baby. The women then fill her pallu with 5 kinds of sweets and fruits.

Another colourful ceremony called the Valakaapu (vala meaning bangles and kaapu meaning security) is also performed with Seemandam, when the mother-to-be is presented with glass bangles. Five married women then decorate her hands with glass bangles in three auspicious colours - an even number of bangles in one hand and an odd number in another. The remaining bangles are distributed among the guests. Soft music is played, and this along with the jangle of bangles, is believed to be good for baby's developing ears. Everyone gives gifts to the mom-to-be and there is playful banter and a traditional feast.

Kerala Customs

In Kerala, Puli-Kuti (literally meaning 'drinking tamarind juice') is a pregnancy ceremony of the Nair community. It is performed on a particular day in the ninth month, at a time fixed by the local astrologer. The pregnant woman, after having bathed and properly attired, is seated facing eastwards in the principal courtyard (natu-muttam) of the Tharavaad (ancestral family house). The Ammayi or maternal uncle's wife and the brother of the pregnant woman conduct this ceremony.

Maharashtrian Dohal Jevan

'Dohal' means craving for certain foods and this ceremony originated as a means to satisfy the food cravings of the expectant mother. During the seventh and ninth months of pregnancy, the mother-to-be is adorned with flower garlands on her wrists, neck, waist, and head and her photos are taken. Wholesome nutritious food and sweetmeats like pedas, burfis, etc. are arranged on plates and covered with a cloth. The expectant mother is asked to select. There is good-natured speculation on the gender of the unborn baby, depending on the selected item and its gender. In Marathi, each food item is referred to as having a gender. For example, 'Bhat' (rice) is masculine and 'Poli' (chappati) is feminine. Similarly, among the sweetmeats Pedas are masculine and Burfis are feminine.

Page 12: Magazine - II 1 to 30

Gujarati Godh Bharna

'Godh' meaning the lap of the woman and 'Bharna' meaning to fill. During this ceremony, the expectant mother is dressed in bridal finery - with garments presented by her mother. Her maternal relatives bring five colourfully decorated metal thaalis (round plates) and the ceremony begins with the mother-to-be's entrance through the front door of her in-law's house. The participating ladies sing traditional songs. For each step the expectant mother takes as she enters the house, a piece of coloured silk is placed under her feet along with a little supari (betel nut), a one rupee coin and a quarter rupee coin till she reaches the place where the puja (worship) will be performed. The mother-to-be is made to sit on the baajotth (a low, four-legged wooden seat) and a small red dot is put on her forehead for good luck. After this, both her mother and her mother-in-law fill her godh (the pallu of her saree) with gifts and jewellery. The elders bless the expectant mother and her unborn child to the accompaniment of traditional festive tunes.

Punjabi Godhbharai

The Punjabi ceremony is quite similar to the Guajarati tradition, and it is called Godhbharai. All close relatives are invited during the seventh month for a special puja. The mother-to-be sits on the floor and after the puja, her mother-in-law wraps coconuts and fruits in a red dupatta and puts it on her lap. The other women place gifts on her lap too and at the end, a small child is left to play on her lap - as a sign of things to come.

Bengali Swad

The Bengali swad (taste or longing) revolves around a lunch, and is held in the ninth month of pregnancy. It was a way of ensuring that the pregnant mother had no unfulfilled wish - for food, clothes or jewellery - before she went into labor. It was also a way of making sure that she was well fed and strengthened for childbirth. The expectant mother wears an elaborate new saree and jewellery given to her for the occasion by the swad's hostess. Specially prescribed food - including a cooked fish's head - one of the most auspicious foods in the Bengali tradition, five types of fried food, including banana fritters and a mixture of vegetables, is set out in front of her on a huge silver platter. The first mouthful that she takes has to include a pinch of everything on the platter and as she puts it into her mouth, the Conch Shells blow alerting the Gods that the swad has begun and a future mother is now under their care. The mother's meal ends with payesh, a sweetened dish of rice and condensed milk.

Indian Muslims – Satvasa

During this ceremony, seven varieties of fruits and a green saree set are presented to the mother-to-be, while the husband is garlanded as a gesture of honour. Parents and relatives are then served a special meal.

Goan Baby Shower

True to the Goan way of life, baby showers are fun in Goa. At her mother's house, the expectant mother is decked up and a special sweet called dodal and cakes and other goodies are prepared. Gifts for the mother-to-be-ranging from gold to clothes are given.

Even though there are many different ways of celebrating, the universal essence is to make the mom-to-be feel special and even pamper her. It is a means to shower mom-to-be, baby and not to forget the dad-to-be with love and blessings. As a nurse midwife we should always analyse and appreciate the traditional practices which adds to the essence of life.

FACTS ABOUT CYCLONES

Facts are statements which are held to be true and often contrasted with opinions and beliefs. This article gives unusual and interesting facts about Cyclones, trivia and information, including some useful statistics which will fascinate everyone, from kids and children to adult.

Interesting Facts about Cyclones are as follows:

Fact 1 - Definition: a violent rotating windstorm. In meteorology cyclones are described as being formed by rapid inward circulation of air masses about a low-pressure center; circling counter clockwise in the northern hemisphere and clockwise in the southern.

Picture of Thanae cyclone – Dec 2011

Fact 2 - The term 'cyclones' includes the hurricane, typhoon, and tropical storms. Not to be confused

with Tornadoes.

Fact 3 - It should not be applied to the moderate disturbances attending ordinary areas of low pressure nor

to tornadoes, waterspouts, or ``twisters,'' in which the vertical motion is more important than the

horizontal.

Fact 4 - The main Parts of cyclones are the eye, the eye wall and cloud chains/spiral rain bands.

Fact 5 - The eye is in the centre of the cyclone and relatively warm, light winds, clear/broken clouds and low surface pressure can vary in size, from 10 km. to 100 km., depending on the severity of the storm.

Fact 6 - The region around the eye is termed as eye wall where wind will rotate around the eye at a faster pace resulting in the appearance of a rolling over snake.

Fact 7 - Clouds which come out side from cyclone are called cloud chains/Spiral rain bands which make the cyclone bigger

Fact 8 - Depending on its location and strength, tropical cyclones are referred to by names such as hurricanes, typhoons, tropical storms, cyclonic storms, tropical depressions or simply just cyclones.

Fact 9 - Cyclone intensity is measured by wind speed, and cyclones are accorded a category based on these factors. The category of the intensity of cyclones is as follows:

Category 1 - gales with gusts to 125 km/h

Category 2 - destructive winds with gusts of 125 -170 km/h

Category 3 - very destructive winds with gusts of 170 - 225 km/h

Category 4 - very destructive winds with gusts of 225 - 280 km/h

Category 5 - very destructive winds with gusts exceeding 280 km/h

Fact 10 - The average life of most cyclones is 1 week

Fact 11 - Cyclones are assigned names

Fact 12 - Names are given to meet the need for a unique identifier in issuing forecasts and warnings

Fact 13 - During the last two hundred years tropical cyclones have been responsible for the deaths of about 1.9 million persons worldwide. Mrs. K. Jayapriya,

WORDS TO LIVE BY:

Want a happier life? Try to be open, flexible, and curious.

Keep an open mind

Joy, delight, wonder, and astonishment are a part of life. If you're not happy, don't accept life as it is! Be

assertive and start exploring. Investigate, be curious, and ask questions Life is a do-it-yourself project

Everyone has worth and value. Happy people have self-acceptance and like themselves. You are nicer than

you know. You're an important, unique person.

Thoughtful effort is needed for happiness.

Goals are good.. Life becomes worthwhile when you have goals. There's no value in worrying because

you can turn any problem into a project. Spend a few minutes every day visualizing not only your goals,

but also how you would like your life to be like.

Mindfulness is the quality of noticing, of being aware of what's happening in the moment.

The quality of one's life depends on the quality of one's attention. Being busy just to be busy may not

contribute to one's happiness. Be aware and conscious of your body, your feelings, your reactions, and

your experience from moment to moment.

Optimism and choices are always available.

There are several solutions to any problem.

Life is always multiple choice. Life is full of options. Watch for the third, fourth, and fifth choice before

making an important decision. Try not to judge people or situations.

Never make a decision when you're angry or sad.

Patience is always necessary. Try to pause and reflect before speaking or reacting. If upset, calm down

before reacting to a situation. Be detached and at ease

Silence has value .If you want to be happier, try to put at least fifeteen minutes a day aside to meditate

and close out the world.

You must be worth more than the money they pay you.

2. A nurse has come to see one of his patients in a hospital. The patient has had major surgery to both of his

hands.

Patient: "Nurse," says the man excitedly and dramatically holds up his heavily bandaged hands."Will I

be able to play the piano when these bandages come off?"

Nurse: "I don't see why not," replies the nurse.

Patient:"That's funny," says the man. "I wasn't able to play it before."

aunt that I will now grant the next three wishes!"

The nurses quickly argued among themselves as to which one would ask for the first wish. Speaking

up, the nursing assistant wished first.

Nursing assistant: "I wish I were on a tropical island beach, with single, well-built men feeding me

fruit and tending to my every need." With a puff of smoke, the nursing assistant was gone.

Floor nurse:"I wish I were rich and retired and spending my days in my own warm cabin at a ski resort

TIPS TO STAY HEALTHY FOR PEOPLE USING

COMPUTERS FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME

The prolonged use of computers brings physical and psychological problems to us, which can be :

·Carpal tunnel syndrome.

·Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI)

·Stress eyestrain, severe headaches and Prolonged computer use could be linked to glaucoma,

·General malaise and other visual and musculoskeletal problems

·Back aches and neck aches

·Sleep disturbances and Epilepsy

·Pronounced weight gain or weight loss

Posture:

Proper posture is essential to healthy computer use. Poor posture has been shown to increase fatigue levels

and place unneeded strain on the back. Invest in a chair that adjusts to your height and provides adequate

lumbar support. Place your feet on the floor or on a footrest which will increase comfort by relieving stress

on the legs, back and neck. If your job requires a lot of phone use, avoid cradling the phone between your ear

and shoulder. Try using a speaker phone or headset to better prevent neck and shoulder strain.

Break it Up

Ergonomists have a saying, "The best posture is the next posture." Be sure to take breaks during the day to

keep moving. Sitting or typing for a long period is not only uncomfortable, but increases the risk of serious

health problems down the road. Use a sit-stand work surface to change your position while keying. Or just

standing up, stretching or taking a walk will provide the rest that your hands and body need. You'll feel more

comfortable and energized throughout a long day when you do.

PC Arrangement

Make sure your computer is arranged correctly on the desk. Counter to common perception, computer

monitors should be situated just below eye-level. This will help reduce backward head and neck tilt and

straining associated with an incorrectly positioned monitor. Be careful not to place the monitor too low,

which will also place pressure on the neck muscles. Also vital is positioning the monitor at the proper

viewing distance. The standard rule of thumb is that the monitor should be at least 20 inches (approximately

arm's length) from you. Make sure you can clearly see the characters on your monitor. You may need to

adjust your monitor brightness and contrast settings to display characters clearly.

Keep it in Neutral

The key to healthy wrists is keeping them in a neutral position while typing or using a mouse. To see if your

wrists are in neutral, check and make sure that your forearms, wrists and hands are in a straight line while

you're typing. If not, use a wrist rest to support your wrists and help keep them straight.

Page 17: Magazine - II 1 to 30

Be a Visionary and Avoid Poor lighting

Working on a computer all day can quickly take a toll on your eyes. Check the lighting in your home or office

to reduce glare on your computer screen and prevent vision problems. Use window coverings to diminish

outside light and try turning off some of the overhead lights. Try using an anti-glare computer filter, like the

Circular Polarizing Filter, which allows for a clear, sharp image that is easy to read and kind to the eyes.

Make sure you can read texts away from you and still be able to see clearly. You do not want to have to have

your “nose in the computer” to be able to read it. This will reduce eye strain and fatigue which can cause

headaches.

Extended periods of close reading

About every 30 minutes look at distant objects for a few minutes. It sounds dumb, but it will work and it's an

excuse to take a break from reading.

Wearing contacts for long periods of time

When you focus on near objects like a book or a computer screen you blink less and your eyes dry out. When

the contact sticks to your eye it can cause contact-lens-induced allergies. If you know you will be reading for a

long time you should opt to wear your glasses.

Avoid eating

A study conducted in U.K. showed that people of ages 25 – 40 that took food to munch while using the

computer for at least 4 hours a day, gained 10lbs – 15lbs in a span of 1 year.

EVERYTHING MOM

How did you find the energy, mom

To do all the things you did,

To be teacher, nurse and counselor

To me, when I was a kid.

How did you do it all, mom

Be a chauffeur, cook and friend,

Yet find time to be a playmate,

I just can't comprehend.

I see now it was love, mom

That made you come whenever I'd call,

Your inexhaustible love, mom

And I thank you for it all

LIFE POEMS

Closer and together,

Barely a minute goes by,

Without me thinking,

Is this too good,

To be true;

I punch myself from time to time,

Just to make sure iam not dreaming,

And not hallucinating all this,

Between you and me;

A touch here, a touch there,

A kiss here, a kiss there,

A gentle caress, a playful nibble,

Hands all over every time we are together,

Few seconds of leaving you out of my sight,

A frantic search begins, scanning everything and everywhere,

And it stops only when I find you,

Standing, smiling and playing with my heart,

Your lips against mine,

As we indulge in our sins,

Your body next to mine,

Entwined in our flame of ecstasy;

In the moonlight glow,

As we drift into deep peace,

Tell me baby,

Is it love or is it lust?

PARADISE ON EARTH

There is a place resting in between the sea, which is none other than a paradise on earth. Surprised? Yes,

there is a paradise on earth. Around 600 islands (of which 30-32 islands are inhabited) together form a

paradise called Andaman & Nicobar Islands, which is located in the Indian Ocean in the southern reaches of

Bay of Bengal and are much closer to Myanmar and Thailand than to Indian mainland.

Port Blair, in South Andaman established by Britishers in 1885 is the capital of the Islands and also the

sole entry and exit point either by air or by ship.

The pristine beaches of the Islands are awesome. It attracts one's attention from the busy world. It

feels as if one is in the lap of the nature. Some of the islands and beaches from the many like Ross Island,

Havelock Island, Cinque Island, Jolly Buoy Island, Red Skin Island, Ross & Smith Island, Carbyn's cove,

Wandoor, Chidiyatapu, Aamkunj, Karmatang, Panchvati, Radhanagar are worth visiting. Snorkelling and

scuba diving are some of the major tourist attraction.

An Emerald is a bright green precious stone, and so are the lush green forests of these Islands, thus

giving it a name 'The Emerald Islands'. There are many species of plants and animals endemic to these

Islands. One can cherish the beauty of corals and sea cucumbers in Glass Bottom Boats in Jolly Buoy Island.

Mangroves along the coast protect as well as enhance the beauty of these Islands, thus making the Islands a

great deal to visit for.

Here the list does not get over! Barren Island for India's only active Volcano, Baratang for the Mud

Volcano and the naturally formed Limestone Cave are known to attract tourists from all over the world. Isn't it

exciting?

Now, for an average person the Andaman Islands reminds the 'notorious Cellular Jail', where

criminals along with all considered undesirable to the former British Raj were dumped for their whole life.

The history of Cellular Jail is rife with records of horrendous tortures inflicted upon hapless people who had

taken part in the freedom struggle. At present the Cellular Jail is a National Historical Monument under the

“Archaeological Survey of India” in Port Blair.

Another attraction are the tribes of Eurasia in these Islands. In the pre colonial period, the group of

Islands consisted of aboriginal people divided into ever so many sub groups. Some of them are Jarawas, Great

Andamanese, Onge, Sentinelese etc., and their total population was several thousands. The way these

aboriginal people first came and settled in these Islands, which are situated far away from any mainlands is a

mystery to the anthropologists and the time of this migration also remains a riddle. At present their strength

has dwindled to a mere fraction.

All these marvellous attributes of nature can be termed as the blessing of nature on these Islands.

The supreme power has also bestowed His blessings by keeping the people of different language,

religion, culture in unity. Common languages spoken in these Islands are Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Malayalam,

Telugu, Punjabi, Ranchi, Nicobarese etc.. In short, the Andaman & Nicobar Islands is a miniature of India,

with all varieties India has, along with the mantra “ Unity in Diversity” of which India is proud of.

So a visit to these Islands would definitely be a break from the scheduled and busy lives of ours and the

azure waters of the Islands will make holidaying here worthy for the memory's scrapbook...

SOMETHING MY PAST DIDN'T SEE

Looking into future,

Something my past didn't see.

The outcome of my experience,

Has allowed God to transform me.

Hanging to be alive,

For within I am dead.

Darkness was my company,

And each day I dread.

Walking with a lost soul,

Understanding nothing by hand.

I once had a goal,

My dreams turned to sand.

Seeking the face of comfort,

To captivate my distress mind,

Can't give up on life,

'Hope' I must find.

Thank God I found 'Hope',

In the midst of the dark,

Pursuing to find some light,

Until it penetrates in heart.

Now that I am blessed with life,

And has allowed God to transform me,

I am excited about the future,

Something my past didn't see.

MEMORY MARVELS

The Talmud is a vast compendium of law and lore that forms the basis of Jewish religious life. For centuries it's

been the principal subject of Jewish study. In its modern published form, it runs somewhere between 18 and 22

volumes, depending on the edition. There are 'rabbis' in Poland who can recite the entire Talmud from memory, every

word of it, without a mistake.

These are Muslims who can recite the whole of the Koran, a text which contain 114 chapters known as Sutras. In

1967, the Mohammed Ali Halici showed what could be done by recording 6,500 of its verses entirely from memory. He

made no mistake whatever, despite the fact that the session took six hours.

A professor named A. C. Aitken of Edinburgh University memorized the value of 'Pi' to the first thousand

decimal places. After his death, the Japanese Hideaki Tomoyori has committed the first ten thousand decimal places to

his memory.

The yogi shaa, who lived in Bombay, India could memorize any poem, up to a thousand phrases, in any language

whether he understood it or not after listening to it only once!

In New Zealand, the Maori Chief Kaumatara astonished a reporter by reciting a thousand year history of his tribe

from memory. The story, which spanned forty-five generations, took three days.

Good memory isn't confined to humans. It isn't the elephant that never forgot-it's the dolphin. A perfectly average

dolphin can listen to half-an-hour of those high-pitched clicks they use, and then play them back 'exactly' including

precise click length and pitch.

TERRORISM IN TODAY'S WORLD

The Reciprocal Role of the Police and Security Forces

The media and The General public in war against Terrorism.

The big challenge the world faces in recurrently is TERRORISM .A combined effort all the available

forces including the police and the security forces, the media and the common public is vital in this fight

against the terrible menace. The economic imbalance, the greed for expansion of power, the unemployed

frustrated young people in different countries. The religion and ethnic problems provide grounds to the

perpetrators of terrorist activities .The global financial depression being felt now a day is likely to aggravate

the situation. It is unfortunate for India to be geographically closed to Pakistan which is the epicentre of

terrorist activities. The world trade centre attack in America killing more than five thousand people, the

Bombay incident taking the lives of nearly two hundred, the parliament attack two years back and the several

such occurrences in Indian cities fresh in our memory. Afganistan and Iraq are some other prominent

countries in the severe grip of terrorism.

However the situation ought to be faced, being a strong challenge against humanity. The Intelligence, the

police and security forces, the media and the public have due roles in this war.

The topmost agency in fight should be the intelligence wing of the country. It should have an efficient

network throughout the country, keenly alive to even the minute activities of people from the country and

outside. In this connection, it should be noted that no such similar terrorist attack has been reported in America

since the world trade centre episode. It is evidence of the excellent intelligence work in that country. This

should be an eye- opener to the intelligence of India, were terrorists commit a series of attack one after

Page 26: Magazine - II 1 to 30

another. So our intelligence needs to be strengthened. India has a long stretch of about six thousand Km of

coast. The Bombay disaster emphasizes the navy services equipped with modern necessary equipments and

boats. It is unfortunate that element of terrorism has entered even our military services as reports confirm.

Such elements should be eliminated on proper screening. While the coast guard and the Navy monitors the

activities along the coast and in the sea, BSF and the army are protecting the border on land including the cold

mountainous parts of the country against the entry of the militants. This has become important, since the threat

from Pakistan occupied Kashmir and Bangladesh cannot be neglected.

The service rendered by the media is indeed great. The newspaper, television, radio can play an important

role in the war against militants. There are media persons who venture into any area and extract news of secret

dealings even in video and audio forms. They publish the details for the information of the public. Their

survey reports are useful information to the police for investigation. There is hardly anyone who is not in touch

with one form of media or more. The media reports increases the awareness of the people and serves as

warning to them against the threat of militants and it helps then to take necessary precaution for protection.

The media reports act as a sharp weapon against the perpetrators. Notorious persons like Osama Bin Laden

and Dawood Ibrahim are now familiar names for us and our country because of the media. Cinema and other

visuals are apt to propagate strong messages among people against terrorism.

The general public to have an important role in the fight. Intention for territorial and military expansion of

certain countries gives enough matter for provocation for terrorism. Such attempts can be defeated by the

people by exerting pressure through proper channels on international agencies like the United Nations

Organisations. Country wise protest will not go unheeded. Economic ethnic and religious matters also

provide grounds for terrorism. The starving unemployed and therefore frustrated youths are easily drawn to

terrorism. People's intervention with monetary help, sympathetic approach and counselling may have some

influence to withdraw them. Friendship, mutual acceptance and ardent sincere work for religious harmony

will remedy to a great extend the social evils of ethnic and religious problems. Sympathy for the suffering and

help to the needy are great things.

Thus the police and the security forces, the media and the general public working in coordination will be a

great force in the war against Terrorism.

FRIENDWhen life has its trails,

And down our cheek run tears.

When we feel we are all alone,

And there is no one to care,

Then God sends us a friend,

Like an angel from heaven,

Who showers the sky which has been grey,

Turns bright abruptly and blue,

That's when dark rain,

Give's place to sunshine,

My heart dead and cold,

Is lightened and warmed.

All these things occur,

Only because you care,

I thank God for giving me,

A friend so dear,

There is always one wish,

Foremost in my heart,

May God bless you,

My cherished friend………..

Who has seen the wind?

The wind is passing by.

LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL

At my birth time I cried,

But my mom smiled with tears.

Seasons changed the colour of leaves,

Seasons changed me also.

With wandering eyes, everything I watched,

Dreamy-nights asked me, what's life?

Sleepless eyes and mind searched for the answer,

Later an angel came to my dream and said,

Life is only once.

It won't wait for you,

You can enjoy your life,

But you are the only one who is responsible for everything which is happening in your life.

I looked at her,

Again she told with a smile,

You are the only one who is going to decide your future and life,

So think twice before taking decision.

Again and again angel visited me in my dreams,

Always talking about life.

She whispered in my ears,

Life is like a train,

There are many compartments with its own specialties.

By experiencing each compartment you can understand difficulties and easiness,

Be careful in selecting the compartments,

Seasons can change in our face,

Life gives nostalgic feelings which can cherish in mind,

She wished me to achieve success and to complete the journey safe.

I said, bye to her with lots of hopes,

And said life is beautiful.

STATUS OF INDIAN WOMEN IN THE SOCIETY

The position of Indian women was abjectly low when the country won its freedom in 1947.With

increase demand and constant battle for personal and political right, Indian women are today poised to

achieve, for the first time in history of Indian nation, potential successor, that they had never dreamt of.

In 1950's the Indian women was contended to remain in the background. The films of period mirror this

woman with sari, hair rolled into bun with little makeup. Films like Devdas with Suchitra Sen as Paro in the

stellar role, contrast her with Aishwarya Rai's sumptuous in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas, exemplify this

concept of the Indian women shackled by tradition.

In the 60's the Indian women came out of the exile & embraced on lending a novel and adventurous life

style which reflected in their attire. She seized the opportunity to educate herself. Millions of women followed

engineering, medicine, nursing, the Indian Administrative services, journalism, advertising and modelling.

Women even got into the new career of management. The revolution had begun.

As the 70's & 80's and 90's flashed by this revolution gained momentum and now in this decade the

Indian women's prominence in every field is unquestioned.

Indian women have also played a remarkable role in field of sports. India's golden girl Anju George

won a gold medal in long jump event at the recent Asian Athletic meet conducted in South Korea and many

other women from India got many medals all over the world. Indian talents like Sania Mirza , Koneru Humpi

are also shining examples.

Our Indian president Pratibha Patil is a role model for aspiring women in the field of govern ale women.

There is no doubt that Indian women have gone long way in every aspect of life. Now she is not confined to

household activities and has acquired an equal status as that of men in the society.
