newsHigh-current power slip ring for ship propulsion

As a result of the parallel technologi-cal development in the field of elec-tric propulsion systems and marinearchitecture, the Alsthom companyhas developed a new generation ofships in which the screw with themain propulsion unit is directly inte-grated into the swivelling rudder.

To transmit the current generated onboard to the motors, a high-currentslip ring is required.

This contact unit has to stand up to agreat deal of stress, both electricallyand mechanically (absorption of ± 5°rotations of the unit during 90% ofthe operating time).

The solution supplied by Multi-Con-tact France consists of a system offork plugs with MC- Multilams whichslide on rotating discs.

Various safety tests have beenpassed (Lloyd’s Register, Det NorskeVeritas, Bureau Veritas).

The first power slip rings designed forluxury ocean-going passenger shipshave already been installed at theAtlantic shipyard in St. Nazaire(France). Dimensions of slip ring:

newsnewsMC® on the Internet

Our first steps towards presentingourselves on the Internet were al-ready made in 1997. It soon becameapparent that a serious web pres-ence, as opposed to the dilettante ef-forts that are too often found on theNet, requires a great deal of learning.Web design is an IT domain that in-

volves an immense range of differentfields such as programming lan-guages like HTML, XHTML, XML,CSS, Java, Perl, Vbasic and Access aswell as typography, data base links, graphics and even e-commerce. As aresult of the fierce competition be-tween the two browser suppliers,Microsoft and Netscape, web design-ers are faced with a difficult compati-bility problem.

To make our website accessible to asmany users as possible, compro-mises had to be made which ad-versely affected the range of options,

particularlyin the fieldsof audios,videos orinteractivitiesthat could,for instance,help to visu-alize con-tact proces-

ses or assembly procedures. Wehave learnt from this experience andcompletely redesigned our web pres-ence.

The new website

On the “IntroSite” (ill. 01) the usercan now choose one of three lan-guages. Navigation on the followingpages is effected by means of the“Hoover buttons”. Under the head-ing “Products” (ill. 02) the site pres-ents more than 250 Multi-Contactproducts with pictures and descrip-

tions (ill. 02), divided into the productgroups high current - laboratory -multi-pole - photovoltaic - test equip-ment, as well as custom designs andthe Economy Line. However, this sitestill presents only a small part of ourextensive product range.

Our printed catalogues remain themedium that shows the completerange of products and in which thetechnical details can be found. Thesecatalogues can be ordered directfrom our publicity department bymeans of the “Feedback” button. However, the HTML structure of theMC homepage allows unlimited ex-pansion to suit the wishes and needsof the users.

Under “News” you will find our tech-nical innovations in the form of flyersin Acrobat PDF (Portable DocumentFormat). You can download the nec-essary reader program free of charge;the relevant links can be found under“downloads” (ill. 04).

Under “Distribution” you will find theaddresses of MC affiliates and repre-sentatives all over the world togetherwith the 2000 trade fair dates andlinks to other MC pages. The menuitem “Downloads” (ill. 04) places atyour disposal a wide selection ofsmall software tools, browsers.search engines and also logos andphotos. In the near future we shallprovide the photos section with a

data base call-up facility that showsour photo archive in thumbnail pictureform. You can then use these thumb-nails to mail your picture require-ments to us and order the photos inoffset quality for your advertise-ments, flyers and catalogues.

In the “F.A.Q.” (Frequently AskedQuestions) section, more than 90 as-sembly in-structions(ill. 05) onour partsare avail-able fordownloadingand allkinds oftechnicalinformationcan also beloaded. “About us” tells users about theMulti-Contact company, who we are andwhat we manufacture, our structural or-ganization and any job vacancies.

The futureAll web enthusiasts, midnight surfersand the business world, hope for amassive increase in data transmis-sion speeds. Internet connectionsare growing ever cheaper, providersare springing up like mushrooms andchasing customers with every avail-able means, but precisely because of

the breathtaking growth (ill. 05) ofthe worldwide web it is not possiblefor the technical installations (serv-ers, routers, backbones) to keep pacewith demand.

In any case we shall make every ef-fort to keep abreast of the latest de-velopments and will be grateful foryour suggestions and criticism.

We look forward to the future.Ph. Michel - Desktop Publishing

newsNew silicone planton line at Multi-Contact Essen

Besides a wide range of test equip-ment and accessories, Multi-ContactEssen GmbH produces flexible leadswith silicone, TPE, Teflon® and PVCinsulation.

A particular speciality is its highly flex-ible silicone-insulated stranded leadswhich are used in many different ap-plications.

We use only siliconeof the highest quality

As a result of the selection and com-bination of suitable raw materials– extremely flexible stranded Cuwires and a high-grade addi-tive-crosslinked two-component sili-cone rubber specially developed forMC by Wacker-Chemie –and adapting production to currenttechnical requirements, it is now pos-sible to supply the silicone-insulatedleads in highest quality in a variety ofcross-sections and colours.

We use silicone with thefollowing outstanding features:

❏ High flexibility and elasticity, ro-bust mechanical properties suchas high notched impact strength, extension at break and teargrowth resistance

❏ Environment-friendly due to free-dom from halogens and corrosivebreakdown products

❏ Good resistance to chemicals andageing

❏ Continuous temperature resistancefrom -80°C to +150°C, for shortperiods even up to 300°C.

The new plantTo meet the growing demand for sili-cone-insulated leads, in 1998Multi-Contact was decided to investin a modern new silicone plant.

In collaboration with Colmec (Milan) aplant was developed and constructedto meet the special needs ofMulti-Contact.

The plant’s features include thefollowing modern components:

❏ Main and auxiliary extruders toallow production of variousinsulation structures for wirecross-sections of 0,25 to 25mm2:

– Single-coloured, uniform insulation

– Base insulation, in any desired col-our with additional coloured skininsulation

– Base insulation, in any colour withstripe of different colour, e.g. for agreen-yellow grounding lead insu-lation.

❏ Processor control allowing bothmanual operation and automaticoperation according to pro-grammed mixture formulas.

❏ Measuring equipment fromSikora for continuous electricstrength testing and measure-ment and recording of diameter, insulation thickness and eccen-tricity.

❏ High-speed hot-air ovens for thevulcanization process. This new oven concept recentlywon an award in an innovationcompetition held byRWE-Energie, Essen.

One of the outstanding features of thesilicone-insulated leads is their flexibility

even at extremely low temperatures

newsnewsHow the newoven works:The main parts of the oven are aninner and an outer hot-air zone. In theouter zone, air is preheated to around250°C by passing at low velocitythrough a resistance heating ele-ment, and then fed continuously intothe inner zone.

The resultant “jet effect” greatly ac-celerates the flow of hot air. The airflow evenly surrounds the wire, thusresulting in complete, continuous vul-canization.The advantages:

❏ Due to the use of high-quality sili-cone raw materials and the rela-tively low vulcanization tempera-tures, no corrosive breakdownproducts are produced. This elimi-nates the high costs of cleansing, exhaust gas extraction and wastedisposal that would otherwise beinvolved.

❏ The closed air circulation systemguarantees excellent regulationwith a rapid response.

❏ Effective thermal insulation keepsheat losses small and results inhigh efficiency.

❏ Constant product quality due tocomplete and continuous vulcani-zation even with differing siliconeparameters.

❏ High safety standard. No risk offire or destruction of the insula-tion in event of production com-ing to a sudden stop.

❏ Low service costs due to robust,low-maintenance design of partsexposed to wear. With the new silicone plant, which

went into operation at the beginningof this year, Multi-Contact wishes toensure that in future its silicone-insu-lated leads will be produced in an en-vironment-friendly, rational and eco-nomical manner.

It also aims to achieve a further im-provement in product quality by exactmonitoring and control of the pro-cesses.

newsNew assembled type Ø 2mm safety connectors

We have expanded our touch-pro-tected Ø 2mm safety range with theaddition of the assembled type Ø2mm in-line safety plugs and sockets.

This provides the user with additionalpossibilities for the individual fabrica-tion of test and connecting leads - allwithin the touch-protected Ø 2mmplug connecting system approved forup to 600V, CAT II (according toIEC/EN 61010-2-031).

An important new feature of theseplug connectors is the design of theinsulation.

When the two insulators are fittedtogether, the end of the lead is firmlygripped so as to give effective strainrelief.

The point of connection is relievedfrom mechanical strain so that even

soldered connections are sufficientlydependable - an important contribu-tion to increased safety.

Besides separate plugs and socketswe also supply ready-assembled test

leads (plugs at both ends) and exten-sion leads (one end plug, other endsocket).

The wires we use are our highly flexi-ble stranded wires (0,5mm2) with sili-cone or PVC insulation.

Plug components:When the two insulators are fitted together, the strain relief clip (detail A) presses on the

wire so as to hold it firmly

Plug

Socket

Touch-protected Ø 1,5mm and Ø 2mm plug connectors acc. to DIN 42802

The new Ø 1,5mm and Ø 2mm plugconnectors are lightweight, space-saving systems that meet the re-quirements of DIN 48202-1 and DIN48202-2 (draft) with regard totouch-protection and withdrawalforce.

Neither system is capable of matingwith the other or with Ø 2mm safetytest accessories. The insulating ma-terials used for the plugs and flexibleleads are suitable for steam steriliza-

tion and can therefore be used formedical applications: connection ofECG electrodes, connection of exter-nal cardiac pacemakers.

To keep the weight of the connectingleads low, we use a small conductorcross-section.

As a result of this and the high flexibil-ity of the leads, the connections aresubject to little mechanical strain.

The open lead end allows users tomake connecting leads to suit theirindividual requirements.

The advantages at a glance:

❏ Space-saving

❏ Connecting leads light and highlyflexible

❏ Touch-protected

❏ Suitable for steam sterilization

❏ Connecting leads can be assem-bled by user to adapt to individualapplications

❏ In conformity with DIN 42802

newsnewsNew TPE-insulated Ø 4mm safety test leads

Until now we have supplied our triedand tested test leads in the economi-cally priced version with PVC insula-tion and in a version with silicone in-sulation to meet the most exactingrequirements. We have now found ahigh-quality insulating material thatwe can offer to our customers at alower price than silicone insulation, namely TPE (Thermoplastic Elasto-mer).

Besides its good mechanical andchemical properties (e.g. flexibility attemperatures down to -30°C or resis-tance to many acids and alkalis), the

notable characteristics of the TPE in-sulation include above all a very highinsulation resistance which makesthem ideally suited for the measure-ment of high resistances.

The attractive price for a product ofsuch a high standard is likely to be ofspecial interest to our customers.

newsMulti-2000 test instruments in complete test and measurement systems

Versatility and adaptability are demanded

Electrical and electronic appliancesand systems are posing ever morecomplex test and measuring prob-lems. This results on the one handfrom changes in standards (EMC,low-voltage guideline) and on theother hand from the need to in-crease the efficiency of production.

The continuous use of CAD-CAMfrom development through to test-ing, as well as documentation andtraceability, demand completely newstructures in the field of testing andmeasurement.

This does not apply only tolarge-scale manufacturers. Today itis no longer sufficient to string to-gether a series of individual testinstruments.

A universal, complex system mustbe adaptable to all kinds of applica-tions by changing or adding compo-nent modules or software.

At the present level of technology, networking is also indispensable. The range of applications is ex-tremely diverse.

Objects undergoing testing for elec-trical safety may include such de-vices as lamps, washing machinesand dishwashers, electric stoves, electrically powered tools and ma-chines, components such as trans-formers, IGBT modules and otherparts.

The solution

As a result of their modular construc-tion and ease of control, componentsfrom the Multi-2000 family meetthese requirements in an almost idealmanner. Control is effected by meansof an industrial PC operating underWindows which has been appropri-ately equipped and interference-sup-pressed. There are a number of alter-native data input possibilities such as:

– fully automatic by bar code– via the network link to the

host computer– manual via keyboard.

The instruments are specially modi-fied for system use. They no longerhave a control panel with display be-cause the measured values can beread on the computer screen. The input and output leads arepositioned to the rear.

Typical test instrument from the Multi 2000series: SL-50, a high-current ground lead

test instrument.

Description of the units(example)

Industrial PC: 12" TFT screen andPentium processor for control oftest procedure.

Ground leads: Instruments with 10or 25A AC are available as standardversions, or instruments with50 / 75 / 100A AC for special require-ments (high-current AC ground leadtest instruments). Special instru-ments for up to 500A can besupplied.

Insulation: The insulation test isnormally carried out at 500V DC.

Function: Here too, it is possible tochoose from a range of instruments.Potential-separated single-phasefunction voltages are possible up toa power of 3kVA and a voltage of260V AC.

Leakage current: For measurementof the leakage current, one of thefunctional units described above isrequired.

The various measuring proceduresand evaluations can be programmedaccording to the relevant standard. This makes the system suitable formedical use.

High voltage:On a standardbasis devicesare employedwhich can sup-ply up to 6kV ACand 8,4kV DC ata power of500VA, i.e. theHV-107. If desired, equipment forpower levels up to 3kVA and volt-ages up to 35kV AC and 50kV DCcan be supplied.

All options that are supplied as stan-dard equipment can also be incorpo-rated in these versions.

Multiplexers: With some test ob-jects it is necessary to effect mea-surements between different testpoints. In the case of lamps or ma-chines, a series of ground leads mayhave to be tested in succession.

The high-voltage test can also differ. Thus it may be necessary to effecttesting from the input to earth be-tween the input and the controloutput.

The necessary switchovers are ef-fected by multiplexers.

tan d measurementMainly insulating oil is used for insu-lating transformers and switches forhigh-voltage and power applicationssince it not only has good insulatingproperties but also promotes heatdissipation.

Special attention must therefore bepaid to the quality of the oil. For thatreason, besides the measurement ofthe breakdown voltage, the nationaland international standards (e.g. IEC /EN 60156, VDE 0370, ASTM D-877 /D924 / D 1169) also prescribe the de-termination of the dielectric loss fac-tor tan d.

VFM bridgeFor the determination of tan d theloss factor measuring bridge VFMhas been developed. This is aneasy-to-operate, economically pricedinstrument suitable for mains inputvoltages from 85 to 265V AC.

This wide range of input voltages al-lows it to be used all over the worldwithout changing settings. The tem-perature and voltages can be set ac-

cording to the various standards. Theconnections of the internal measur-ing cell are led to the outside via amultiplexer so that it is also possibleto carry out other measurementssuch as resistance measurementswith the standard cell.

HeatablemeasuringcellMZH

For users who already have a lossfactor measuring bridge and a high-voltage source, the heatable measur-ing cell MZH is an ideal addition totheir equipment.

The cell is identical with that of theVFM, but is provided with a highly

accurate temperature control withthree pre-settable values. The MZHalso has a wide-range mains inputfrom 85 to 265V AC.

higher, further, fasterAt the Olympics, higher, further, faster has always been the name of thegame. And it will be just the same at Sydney 2000. We are playing a part inthe construction of the Olympic facilities, among other things with our photo-voltaic plug connectors. And here too, higher, further, faster is the order ofthe day. Thousands of solar panels have to be wired up. With PV plug con-nectors this is 1. faster, 2. it gets us further (in the protection of the environ-ment) and 3. the cost savings are higher.

newsGiving young people a chance

That was our idea when, after abreak of some years, we decided toresume the training of apprentices. We were induced to take this stepnot only by the fact that many youngpeople are unable to find a place totrain for their chosen vocation, butalso by the realization that their de-velopment has a bearing on the fu-ture of our company.

The various departments neededsome convincing, for the supervisionand instruction of trainees are an ad-ditional burden on top of their al-ready heavy work load. But we wereable to find committed members ofour staff to take over this task afterattending a course for instructors.

Our experience so far has been en-tirely positive. The instructors enjoyworking with their highly motivatedtrainees and their new task hasgiven them an opportunity tofreshen up their basic knowledge.Marcel Camadini, one of the twotrainees, had to give a talk at his vo-cational school, a part of which isprinted below.

Personal portrait:

Presentation of Multi-Contact AGI should like to present the companywhere I am training, Multi-ContactAG in Allschwil.

Multi-Contact AG was founded in1962 by the electrical engineerRudolf Neidecker.

With the development of theMultilam principle, it created a com-prehensive system of plug connec-tors for many fields of industry. Witha current staff of more than 450, weattain a turnover of around SFr. 75million.

Our production plants are certified inaccordance with ISO 9001, and thusmeet the highest quality standards.

We are present all over the world -in Singapore, for instance, in Italy, the USA, Germany and many othercountries. Our products are used insuch fields as the automobile indus-try, medicine, solar energy, and alsoin schools and research anddevelopment.

Individual custom design isone of our strengths

The four production plants ofMulti-Contact AG are:

– MC® Allschwil, group headquarters

– MC® Weil am Rhein in Germany

– MC® France in France

– MC® Essen in Germany

In Allschwil we have several depart-ments with a staff of roughly 120, allof whom contribute to the successof the firm.Quality assurance & quality testing

In my view quality assurance is veryimportant since in our firm a productmay not be sold or passed on if itdoes not conform to quality certifi-cate 9001.

Quality testing requires various mea-suring and testing instruments suchas a microscope, a surface testingdevice, a special microscope and theelectroplating thickness measuringdevice.

The surface testing device sensesthe surface roughness of aworkpiece over a small area.

It is like a fully automatic Rugotesterwhich also produces a graphicrecording.

The special microscope is a micro-scope upon which a camera with anextremely sharp resolution ismounted.

The camera is connected to a moni-tor that gives a clear picture of theworkpiece.

This enables the smallest defectssuch as cracks to be very quicklydetected.

If necessary the monitor image ofthe workpiece can be printed out asa photo.

That ends my presentation of thefirm where I am training, and I hopeyou found it interesting.
