Uses the same font and positioning in every issue, makes it easier for readers to know what they are looking for when buying the magazine.

Not an article about music – but NME is aimed at the same target audience as the TV programme, so the majority of the readers will be interested in reading the article.

The other articles that readers are probably most interested in reading – the articles that will catch the target audience’s eye after The Inbetweeners article. In the left third so they are the first visible thing to the readers.

The main article isn’t about music – but the character Will is the main character in the series, and he’s further forward than the other characters.

Possibly still trying to relate it to music by having the guitar

Quote will anchor the image – gives reader more of an idea about the article, and entices them more to see what the artist has said. Font is put in a hand written style font – looks as if one of the characters has written it.

There isn’t anything about the Inbetweeners on the contents page as it is the first article in the magazine, nme have made the contents page more about the music articles in the magazine.

Nme know that most readers will turn to the contents page, so they know to advertise on it as it will attract a lot of the readers.

Nme have made articles readers will be more interested to see larger, so its clear to readers where they can find the articles.

Kept these articles small, but they are still clear – articles that the readers wont be as interested in looking at.

Page 3: Magazine analysis

There is not much text used in the nme double page spread – they know that readers will be interested in the pictures of the inbetweeners characters so they don’t have to make the text as bold.

They have kept the images of the Inbetweeners characters funny, it keeps with the theme of the programme and will interest readers more.

Instead of using a lot more text they have added captions with the pictures – still makes readers understand a story line more but does not take attention away from the pictures.

The title and the standfirst of the article helps readers understand what the article is about more – helps them realise that the whole article itself is based on the actual programme and is not the real life people who play the characters.

Advertisement on the page – they know most nme readers will turn to the main article so it’s a good place to advertise.

Masthead

Left third- readers can only see the masthead, the image of the artist and the free cd – all that the magazine needs to entice the readers.

Free cd every issue – advertising it to make readers want to keep buying the magazine every month.

Cover lines not shown in the left third; this is unconventional as cover lines normally appear on the left third. This is a deliberate design decision. The producers of the magazine obviously feel that the Dizzee Rascal lead article and the free cd giveaway are enough to motivate the readers to buy the magazine.

Image of Dizzee Rascal purposely used for the shape – the cover lines fit well on the page with the shape of his body, where as if they were anywhere else the page wouldn’t look as neat.

Colour Scheme

The producers of the magazine have kept the colour scheme simple and neat – the grey colour works well with the purple, and the background has been kept simple to make the purple stand out more.

Page 5: Magazine analysis

They have kept the articles in the contents organized and simple like they have on the cover, the way they are set out makes it easy for the readers to find what they are looking for.

They have kept all the main articles in a separate section, with the Dizzee Rascal and CD article highlighted, so they are more noticeable for readers, and they stand out more than others.

They have put the issue number of the magazine on the image of the cover – done to keep the magazine looking plain and clean – they don’t want the contents page to be cluttered

The regulars are what is in the magazine each issue – kept in their own section so its easier for readers to see the special features in the magazine. Also the reviews are kept separately as the magazine contains lots of different genres of music so the readers find it easier to find the reviews of their taste in music.

Skyline used to catch readers eye more – will be interested in upcoming gigs so it will motivate readers more to buy the magazine. Kerrang readers value gigs and live music.

Pull quote will make readers want to look at the article more – talking about pearl jams history – what the producers of kerrang feel that readers would be interested in.

There is a lot of information shown in the left third – the producers feel the readers of Kerrang would be a lot more interested in these articles rather than the grunge article.

The font used for the mast head looks as if it is about to shatter – almost as if music is playing too loud – this goes well with the theme!, and its also got an eroded edge – not kept tidy as its not what kerrang readers would be expected to be like.

The Green Day competition has been put directly under the mast head as it is a big competition and will interest readers to buy the magazine more.

Poster special to entice readers more – what they are interested in.

Page 8: Magazine analysis

Advert for an offer on the magazine – most readers turn to the contents page so kerrang know that the readers will look at it.

The kerrang contents page isn't made neat, but it is still organised – as there is one big picture at the top with a few articles on, it makes those articles more eye catching so readers are more likely to look at them first. they have kept all of the

articles in the same font, but they have made it clear what section certain articles will be in so it will still make it easy for the readers to find what they are looking for.

The editors letter is a common conventional thing in most music and lifestyle magazines – it highlights the main special features in the magazine and feels personal to the readers.

Quotes used to give the audience an idea about what the band has said.

The article is not set out how the rest of Kerrang is – its focusing all on the band and forgetting that it is in the Kerrang magazine.

Pictures to show the life the band have lived – gives the readers more of an impression about the bands lifestyle and their attitudes.

Drop cap – beginning of the article.
