my fourth birthday party. My Chinese friends from Oregon visited with me in Mesa for the Chinese New Year. They prepared the traditional dumplings (pot stickers) as well as another delicious meal. I attended a rare performance in Phoenix of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir to help celebrate Arizona’s Centennial Year. The Palm Springs Follies is always a fun experience for me and was most enjoyable this spring. 1947 | 65th Reunion It’s time to celebrate 65 years since graduation. Come home for our class reunion over Memorial Day weekend (May 25-27). Call Alumni Relations at (858) 875-0505 or visit the web site at alumni.bishops.com for more information and to R.s.v.p.

1948 A mistake was made in the Bishop’s magazine fall/winter issue and the Class of ’48 news was erroneously listed under the Class of ’47.

Sorry for aging the class a year. [The editor apologizes as well.] Barbara Hamman Ivey and Bob are getting to know their first great-grandchild, a boy, born January 20, 2012. Cynthia Pruett Soyster represented the Class of ’48 at a lovely memorial for Yvonne Stevens Hall. One of Yvonne’s three daughters writes, “My husband, Carol, and I are moving into mom and dad’s house in Novato, CA. We were talking about photos after the service and I found framed photos of past reunions at Bishop’s, especially the year the windows were dedicated. I regret not finding them for the memorial.” Two Bishop’s girls attended an opening of “Bouquets to Art” at the De Young Museum in San Francisco in March. These two fine ladies happened to coincidentally share a table in the packed atrium of the museum only to learn they had a common bond—The Bishop’s School. Cynthia (Purple) and Nancy McGee ’87 (Gold) became fast friends as they spoke about their experiences at Bishop’s in the ’40s and ’80s, headmistresses, and bonds of friendship. This made the exhibition opening even more special as a shared Bishop’s experience bonds us together as a community no matter how many miles we are from La Jolla. View the photo of Cynthia and Nancy at their table at alumni.bishops.com. Meeting a Bishop’s girl when you don’t expect it is an amazingly awesome experience! —Barbara Hamman Ivey

1949 A letter from the 1949 class president, Anita Martin Harvey (and Norm), shared good news plus a health challenge which is being treated successfully. Anita and Norm celebrated their 14th anniversary, in Monterey and Cambria, and went to Spokane for a wedding. Over Thanksgiving weekend, they enjoyed touring the big island of Hawaii. A first great-grandson was born over a year ago and Anita’s oldest daughter was married in Coeur d’Alene, ID, so all these wonderful events have provided treasured travels. Signe “Seena” Culbertson Frost reports that she will be spending her 80th birthday, February 15, swimming with the humpback whales in the Dominican

Republic. She is still promoting Soul Collage and sales of her second book Soul Collage Evolving are going well. On returning from “the swim” she will have to undergo rotator cuff surgery. Joyce Armstrong Wayman (new email: [email protected]) and Tony sold their house in which they entertained for our 60th reunion and moved less than a mile away to a house that over-looks a creek. They are active volunteers with the Carlsbad Boys and Girls Club. They keep busy in their new community and Tony still tends a fresh veggie garden which keeps them fed healthily. Peggy Parlour Martin (new email: [email protected]) and Dick are both fine and deeply into remodeling kitchen and family room. They have a few trips planned: Holland, a family cruise from Barcelona to Venice, and the Holy Land. She is a docent at the Huntington Library in Pasadena. Last summer, Lynn Stephenson Carver gathered all of her family for her 80th birthday celebration. Lynn can’t believe that it’s time to celebrate the 81st! Jere Thompson Freeman, in Longmont, CO, has many volunteer activities—providing dinners for the homeless, and working on the Altar Guild and at the Boulder County Treasurer’s Office. She has a grandson in high school locally and has a dog that requires a lot of exercise. Patricia “Paddy” Charteris Higgins and By continue to enjoy life to the fullest and still live in Ludington, MI, overlooking Lake Michigan and the golf course. They escape winter weather by spending three months in Orange Beach, AL. Travels take them to visit a son and two daughters in Ohio, Colorado, and Idaho. They now can claim the birth of a first great-grandson in January 2011. Anyone who’d like to share more news, please email [email protected].—Patricia “Paddy” Charteris Higgins

FamilyMatters Meet Sarah Garro, Director of Alumni RelationsBy Diane Y. Welch

A love for travel has taken her to Africa, Europe, North America

and South America, and on her bucket list are the three remaining

continents, says Sarah Garro, Bishop’s recently-appointed director

of alumni relations. But today, Sarah’s roots are planted firmly with

The Bishop’s School community, and she says, “I already feel very

much at home.”

It is a passion for people and a goal to serve them with quality

programs that makes Bishop’s a perfect fit for the University of

San Diego (USD) sociology major, Class of ’97. After graduation

Sarah led a non-profit family program, which provided experience

in operations and staffing, and maximizing limited resources while

maintaining quality. It was an impactful experience and one that

would shape her career.

However, looking to grow academically, Sarah returned to USD,

completing an MBA with an emphasis in international business in

2003. Following a year-long position with Pfizer, Sarah seized the

opportunity to follow her true passion—an interest to serve her alma

mater—when she became associate director of alumni relations at

USD. Sarah’s responsibilities included developing student and young

alumni programs, managing the scholarship program, and being staff

liaison for the Philanthropy Committee of the Alumni Board.

Sarah says she will continue to build on the successful alumni

programs established at Bishop’s, like YABA!—the Young Alumni of

Bishop’s Activities, and the internship program for graduating seniors,

which is in its second year. A main goal, however, is to encourage

alumni to reconnect to the School through the Alumni Association.

“The challenge is finding how best to do that but it could be as

simple as ‘liking’ the Alumni Association page on Facebook or

updating their contact information with Alumni Relations. This way,

alumni may learn of upcoming opportunities, attend events in their

region, or get involved as a volunteer.”

During her first two weeks Sarah met with several chairs for the

50th Reunion Class. Their enthusiasm to retell stories and share

photos energized her. “As we were walking through campus, the

ladies pointed out buildings where classrooms used to be boarders’

rooms, which helped me envision the campus they remember. Talking

to the alumni has been a great orientation.”

The opportunity to join Bishop’s staff appealed to Sarah largely

because of the similarities in the history between the School and

USD, which was founded as an all-girls’ college. “The institution

became co-ed following a merger in the 1970s, which is a similar

history to Bishop’s. While I’m not an alumna of this school—in a

sense, I’m a guest—I do feel that there are similarities [with USD],

and I feel very comfortable.”

Growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area, Sarah came to

San Diego to attend university and fell in love with San Diego. “So I

decided to stay,” she says. Soon her extended family moved here, too.

Sarah’s immediate family comprises husband, Jon, and one-year-old

son, Nathan. “We love to be outside, and we definitely take advantage

of what San Diego has to offer. We go to the zoo, the beaches, we

bike and hike; we feel so lucky to live here.” Sarah’s interests also go

deep into her family history. After research she was able to trace her

family genealogy back six generations to its Norwegian roots.

Sarah says she is looking forward to meeting past generations of

Bishop’s graduates at Alumni Weekend, May 25-27, and conveys her

heartfelt thanks to Joan Whitney Flagg ’82, the outgoing Alumni

Association Board President, and to all the current volunteers.

“I have already seen them work so hard for their alma mater, it is

very impressive.”

1956 Sydney Billig Tyler-Parker still teaches and writes curriculum for the Pacifica School District. The district has a new summer course in thinking, computers and music, which is an exciting opportunity to showcase some of the work, and they look forward to a large group of five to ten-year-olds for 2012. Sydney’s family lives near the ocean just south of San Francisco, and enjoys their casual yacht club, and rural hikes on the numerous trails. One daughter is nearby, which is such a treat as they have lived all over the world for many years, and both grandsons attend California universities. After several European cruises and three jaunts to China, they are staying put for awhile and utilizing ‘stay vacations,’ since there is so much to do in the Bay Area. The next ventures will probably be up the coast to Canada and then house trading with friends and relatives in England. Meanwhile, contact Sydney’s at [email protected]. She would love to reconnect. Cathie Sandbach travelled and visited with friends and family this spring and is expecting another assortment of relatives who will visit in the summer and fall. On one trip, the group will take their granddaughters to visit several of the homes of Laura Ingalls Wilder. Cathie notes that she has to re-read Little House on the Prairie. She looks forward to seeing the class, again, whenever that might be.—Peg Mumby Whitley

1963Sharon Sinkankas Tooley and David are well and happily retired. Sharon keeps busy with gardening clubs, volunteering and lawn bowling. Sharon and David travel occasionally, but usually within the states. Sharon and her daughter Kim met in New Orleans for a long weekend in March, and Sharon visited her three siblings in Knoxville in April. Carolyn Pardee Beahrs and Dick live in Berkeley and spend lots of time with the three of four children who live in the area (their youngest daughter studies dance in NYC). They have five grand-children. Carolyn is very involved with art of various kinds including painting, collage and book arts. She is looking forward to seeing everyone at our 50th reunion in 2013. Judy Nelson Ebright is busy with her three grandchildren who are the joy of her life! She and Drew went hiking in Switzerland last fall. Judy was in San Diego in March to help host a book signing event at Warwick’s Books in La Jolla on March 15 for Virginia “Ginger” Evarts Wadsworth. Ginger was at Bishop’s for her lower school years. The book signing celebrated the publication of Ginger’s 25th children’s book, a biography, First Girl Scout: The Life of Juliette Gordon Low and the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts, which was March 12, 2012. Ginger grew up in La Jolla, and along with some of the gals belonged to Troop 695 led by Ann Boughton. Check out Ginger’s web site: (www.gingerwadsworth.com) or email her at [email protected]. Suzi Fink Farrar reports that Jim is now retired and they enjoy traveling in the USA and Canada in their Airstream. Between trips they train and show miniature poodles and spend lots of time with their granddaughter

Michelle (14), who is a freshman and cheerleader at Christian High. Christian is in the same athletic division as Bishop’s, so they attend a number of games where the two schools are competing. Ann Procter is no longer living and working in Kabul, Afghanistan, where she spent three interesting years (read about Ann’s work with Afghan women in the fall/winter 2011 issue of Bishop’s magazine). She is now in Nairobi, Kenya, and enjoying all that Kenya has to offer. She is still thrilled with the chance to work and travel in a new and exotic setting. Sharon writes that Ann certainly has her admiration! Susanna Young Cooper retired in January 2009 and immediately jumped right into her bucket list. She started writing stories and poetry, is more involved in progressive political activism, and took a class in Micaceous Clay and pottery making. She also squeezes in swimming, biking, yoga and horseback riding. Susanna and her husband have a 24-foot camper that they use to explore their area and trek to Maine every year to visit family. Her most satisfying work has been as chair of the board of directors for Family Promise of Albuquerque, a national non-profit. As soon as Susanna’s husband retires this summer they plan to move to Jemez Springs, NM, where they have a house on the river. Expect for Susanna and her husband to join the class in 2013 for our 50th reunion. Susan Fleet Welsch reports that she and her friend Everett just returned from New Zealand where they enjoyed fly fishing, and Susan played tennis and bridge. Susan still skis quite a bit when she is in Aspen. It looks like plans for our 50th reunion are coming along nicely. Susan writes that the Manchester Library and Learning Center should be finished by our 50th Reunion in May 2013. She hopes everyone will make a real effort to come to La Jolla in 2013 to visit, play, tour, and just have a great time with old friends. —Sharon Sinkankas Tooley

1967 | 45th Reunion Our 45th class reunion is May 25-27 and it wouldn’t be the same without you. The weekend schedule is packed with fun for all alumni with special events for our class. 1968 Merry Carla Conway-Consandey is teaching a semester at NYU drama department on her new work about Wit and Wordplay—rekindling the performer’s joy in language to infuse their acting work. Great fun! She is teaching workshops with various groups of people and having a great year. Learn more at www.merryconway.com. Kathy Doyle Keenan is working for a startup in the smartphone app space, SweetWater Health, LLC, as an outbound marketing manager. She loves the variety of her job, as she writes and designs all marketing materials, strategizes outbound communications, and manages social media for SweetWater Health. Beyond that, Kathy and Tom absolutely adore being grandparents to Lilah, who continues to be sweet and charming, even though she’s two-and-a-half. Cindy Barsotti Odlin is back from France where she travelled to pick up her son, Andrew, who spent the fall term studying at the Pont-Aven School of Contemporary Art. At term’s end, Cindy met him and traveled through the south of France then back to Paris for a week. Andrew graduated with a BA in Fine Art. Loraine Anderson Stuart spent a good part of the last two years taking care of her parents, and moving Jack’s folks to care facilities, while doing all of their finances, etc. She built a cottage for her mother who is living on the property now. Otherwise her community focuses have been founding the St. Helena Family Resource Center where Loraine has been on the board for seven years. She is a member of the city-appointed commission, Climate Protection Task Force, and active in a group, Progressive Women of Napa Valley. Jack is still in the wine industry as general manager of Benessere Vineyards and has his own small label, Trivium Wines. Their daughter is a marketing director for an architecture firm in San Francisco, and son, Ian, is in his first

year of a master’s in Environmental Management at Duke University. Sally Peters Davidson and Tim happily watch two of their grandkids, five days a week, Amelia (2) and Kinsley (7 mo.). The family is having a blast. Their grandson Tucker (4) joins the fun occasionally. Betsy Walker Locke and Flint also babysit their grandchildren. Newest granddaughter, Sophia Marie, was born in November to son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Andrea Locke. The family enjoys the wonderful blessing to have them so close. Betsy also had the first showing of her artwork at Gifts of the HeArt, a women and the arts event featuring 12 artists at the La Jolla Presbyterian Church, in February. —Betsy Walker Locke

1971Susan Brown Lawson ’71 writes, “It’s hard to believe that this time last year we were busy getting ready for our 40th reunion. Time sure passes quickly and I am so happy that the Class of ’71 continues to connect with each other through emails and on Facebook.” Missie Herrick Burman’s visit to La Jolla over the holidays gave us a good excuse to get together for lunch at Hennessey’s. We had a good turnout. Jennifer Hunter Andrews, Holly Avriette, Missie, Ruth Howell, Jenny Boyd Griffiths, Holly Manion, Nancy Droege McFarland, Mary Ann Wickes and I gathered around the fire pit in Adirondack chairs and spent a few hours catching up. We hope to make this an annual tradition; although, our venue will probably change since parking in La Jolla is so horrendous. Our class was extremely saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Mower since we were privileged to be students his first year at Bishop’s. Fleur Hales Testa writes, “If I listed three great teachers, he would be on the list. I think of him every time I see a Giotto or Della Robbia. I still smile when I remember how Dr. Mower would cringe every time a student would pronounce the name like Jotto. I’ll never forget our pronunciation lesson to be able to say Giotto correctly. He will be missed.” Gregg Pickrell writes, “Thank you for letting me know about Dr. Mower. I believe he started me on the journey at Bishop’s that led to five years of college and a BA in Art and Architectural History. I will never forget him or his smile. I loved his classes. We have lost a great and inspiring

teacher. I wish I could have been there for the memorial…I would ask to say something about him. He definitely had a different way to keep us all at attention and want to learn—a very positive part of my Bishop’s experience.” The only news from Gregg is that after much ado, she finally got her owner/trainer license with the National Steeplechase Association. That was big news because it is not that easy to do. Susan’s personal recollection of Dr. Mower was when he asked to collect notes for the very first time to review them. Susan printed her notes, her printing was microscopic in size and she used both sides of the notebook paper. Dr. Mower glared at her when she handed in about four sheets of paper (everyone else was turning in volumes). Susan asked him to reserve his judgment until after his review. When he returned the notes to the class, Dr. Mower apologized profusely to Susan saying that her concise notes contained more than the volumes of the others and he was going to give her an “A.” Pam Straub Ziebarth writes, “I wanted to share how fun it has been to get back in touch with Gregg and Dodie Spencer-Smith. Gregg and I have so much in common and have found that we have very dear mutual friends in the horse world. My two closest friends are from Tucson and Gregg’s dad was their horse vet when they were growing up. We email at least once a week and Dodie has been out and joined us for a day of racing at Santa Anita, and a trip to the Winner’s Circle. Dodie is now the “godmother” of Tiz Flirtatious and follows all of our horses. Fun times.” Anne Vardaman Daniel writes, “Spring is two weeks early, almost cherry blossom time, and I loved the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial when my kids and I visited it last week. The kids and I went

down to Jackson, MS, to a cousin’s 60th birthday. Three days of fried food, salad has never looked so good. We had a great time catching up with the relatives and old friends.” Missie’s husband, Len, wrote their holiday letter this year about her political aspirations (satire, of course). The title was “Missie! She’s way outside the box (and needs a job).” Missie writes, “Alas, my campaign has sputtered, which means I have to consider real employment. I was unable to attend Dr. Mower’s service as I was at sea with my stepmother on her annual cruise. Give everyone my best. No news except, I beat Mary Ann to grandmother status.” Congrats Missie on your new granddaughter, Reagan. Lyn Edwards Croak sent out the Croak Family News during the holidays. It was filled with highlights of the year, among them our 40th reunion, but I thought I’d share her news from June. “June was full of surprises. Jeff retired from farming and we became part time residents of Wisconsin! Reverse snow-birds of sorts! Our summer digs are located in northern Wisconsin, with lakes, trees, and wildlife. Quite a change from desert, cactus, lizards and snakes—it is so green.” Susan de la Vergne writes, “I’ve been invited to Accra, Ghana, to teach this fall in a new leadership institute there, the Palm Leadership Institute, part of a new university. We moved back to Los Angeles a few months ago, and my husband landed a wonderful job right away working in the tech group at MGM. He has only a three mile commute—unheard of in this city. I’m running around the country teaching leadership and communication for engineers, and things have picked up quite a bit on the professional front, I’m happy to say.” Thank you, Class of ’71, for keeping in touch and sharing your news. The School has a fun-filled weekend planned, and we hope all of you will participate. Sandy Miller Gilbert and I have planned a fun dinner on the night of Saturday, May 26 at 6:00 p.m. at Alfonso’s of La Jolla. Our class was sent an invitation to both Alumni Weekend and our class dinner. Please send Sandy and me your email address, as we have many old emails or none on file. If you can’t come, please send news, so we can share with all!” Teri Brewer recently received an MA in Archaeology for Screen Media from Bristol University, England. Teri’s MA film, Archaeology from the Ashes was a short documentary about wildfire and archaeolo-gy in San Diego County. It was shown at a symposium at Cambridge University in February and at USC in March. Teri hopes to add a show in San Diego.—Reunion Chairs: Susan Howell Mallory ([email protected]), Sandra Miller Gilbert ([email protected])

On a Sunday, the 25th of March, over 300 members of the Bishop’s community gathered in the Eva May Fleet Athletic Center to celebrate the life of their teacher, friend and colleague, Dr. Otto Mower, who passed away at age 93 on February 7, 2012.

During the reception that followed the service guests shared their stories of travels and times with Otto while appreciating the memorabilia on display. They enjoyed a light Italian lunch and viewed a video of the 1984 European

student art tour with Otto’s image and

voice on the big screen.

In the weeks prior to the service and

reception alumni spoke of the impact Otto

had on their lives—they emailed, exchanged

memories on Facebook, wrote notes that

accompanied their contributions to the

Otto A. Mower Chair for the Teaching of

the Humanities, and spoke from their heart

during the reception.

Thank you to Bill Evans ’78, Corinne

Perkins Ross ’97 and The Rev. Amanda May Rutherford ’68 for sharing their

reflections during the service and to the

members of the memorial reception

committee (above photo).

To learn more about the service for Dr. Otto Mower or to share your personal reflection, please go to www.bishops.com and select Alumni. See “True Renaissance Man” on page 8 to read more about Dr. Mower.

Carolyn works for the same company, Premier Healthcare Alliance, but last summer, the San Diego office downsized and several people were made remote employees, so she enjoys working from home most days. John and Carolyn are empty-nesters as Katherine remained in Denver after college and Elizabeth is currently a freshman at CU Boulder. To fill the empty-nest, they have two yellow labs that keep them active and busy. Elizabeth Allen White was in the news as the judge who presided over the wrongful termination trial of one of the Desperate Housewives actress, Nicollette Sheridan. The Class of ’73’s 40th reunion is next year. Candy and Carolyn have ideas to share. In the meantime, send updated news and pencil in Reunion 2013.—Carolyn Slack Standley

1974 Nancy Gengler, husband Harry, Alexander (13) and Lusia (9) are currently living in London. Nancy’s days are filled with cooking, cleaning and homework, the job of

a happy mother. The family spends time in southern Spain vacationing with extended family. Holly Hoag and Robert are still living in Sonoma, 15 years now. Holly’s son Tyler (23), who graduated from Boston University, lives in NYC and works for Factset Research Systems. Graham (21) is currently at George Washington U. in DC and graduates in December. Holly and Robert just moved their boat to Palma de Majorca, and have been taking a few months several times a year to enjoy Spain, the Balearics, and the Med. Holly treasurers her ongoing friendships with her Bishop’s buddies: Alla Henshaw, Janet Hire, Sylvia Lyche, Christie Davis, Amy Hunter ’75, Julie Tuck ’76, Nancy…the list goes on. Alla is happily living in Pacific Palisades, when she is not in the car driving all over California to visit her boys. Georgie (28) is living in La Jolla and will be graduating from UCSD in June, Trevor (25) is living in San Francisco and attending San Francisco City College, and William (18) is currently a senior at the Webb Schools in Claremont. Alla’s email is [email protected] and she would love to hear from anyone from the Class of ’74!—Alla Henshaw

By Diane Y. Welch

Joan Whitney Flagg ’82 has a triple-faceted understanding of The Bishop’s School community. As current Alumni Association Board President she is in tune with alumni; as a graduate of Bishop’s she has an intimate history with the School; and as a parent of three students (Harrison ’13, Alexandra ’15, Hayden ’17), she is in step with the Parents’ Association Board.

This trifecta of experience has led to Joan’s support of collaboration between the Alumni Association Board, the Parents’ Association and the Parents of Alumni (PALs), a group that is under the umbrella of the Parents’ Association. The prior name of Alumni Leadership Council was updated to Alumni Association Board, enhancing efforts to forge a stronger partnership between parents and alumni at Bishop’s.

“People seemed confused by the former name because it stood by itself,” remarks Joan. “Changing the name to the Alumni Association Board goes hand-in-hand with both the alumni and parent boards working together to benefit the School. We have really grown to depend on each other, especially as more alumni become Bishop’s parents.”

The Alumni Association Board oversees the annual Ellen Browning Scripps Celebration selecting accomplished alumni, faculty and staff to be recognized; the Alumni Weekend; regional events that take Head of School Aimeclaire Roche to alumni gatherings nationally; and more. Joan was elected to board president in fall 2010 and as a board member for the previous five years was actively involved in organizing these events. Joan, who jokes that she “has been volunteering forever,” also was one of three co-chairs of the Centennial Celebration Alumni Committee in 2008-2009.

One of the high points of her presidency has been the launch

of the Alumni Association Internship Program, which piloted last year with three graduating seniors interning at Qualcomm. This year the program has grown to eight internships: La Jolla Playhouse, The Old Globe, La Jolla Music Society’s Summerfest, U-T San Diego, Grand Del Mar Resort, Westcore, Qualcomm, and the San Diego Museum of Art.

“In part this program was initiated as a welcome into the School’s Alumni Association for our graduating seniors. The response from the Class of ’12 to this summer’s internship offerings has been strong. These experiences are going to be really great for this class and future graduates.”

The relationship with Qualcomm recently led to a recruiter visiting Bishop’s to instruct seniors in how to write a resume, how to conduct a phone interview, how to write a letter, and more. “This is teaching our students, beyond Bishop’s, how to get a job. It is so valuable.”

For Joan the favorite aspect of her job as president has been watching the excitement grow as increasing numbers of alumni attend events both on and off campus. Meeting new friends from other classes and decades, and reconnecting with former classmates has been especially gratifying.

Looking ahead to the fall Joan says that she has every confidence that the Alumni Association Board will continue to build on its current momentum, increasing the level of alumni participation with Bishop’s, “which will grow into alumni giving back in greater numbers to the School.”

atters | CLASS NOTES

1984 The class is all deeply saddened by the passing of beloved Dr. Mower. Most from the class were fortunate enough to be a part of Dr. Mower’s classes and/or his famous European art tours. Marianne Eldredge Evenhuis was grateful to be able to share the love and memories of him with classmates through Facebook. Comfort came—at least virtually—by hearing how much he meant to so many of us. The class sends condolences to his wife (known as dear Ms. Chaffee) and their family. Dr. Mower’s life was celebrated at a memorial on March 25 at Bishop’s. Karen Todt Tavares is back in school again, feeding her education addiction, “in a classroom full of college students who were not born until after I got my bachelor’s degree.” Karen is learning German. Should be a piece of streusel for this bright gal! Also the scholar, Ian Roth is busy finishing his master’s in public administration that he started in 1992 at San Francisco State University. Way to go, Ian! This last year has been a very special one for Marsha Ruland…she got married! Summer 2011, Marsha and Jonathan Butler exchanged vows in Irvine, CA, and now live in the City of Orange, CA. For the last four years she has been working on her Master of Divinity degree at Talbot School of Theology and graduated last December. Before going back to school, she had worked at a church for six years in the Bay Area. She is excited to be able to get involved in Christian ministry again either working for a church or a non-profit organization. Congrats, Marsha on all fronts! The Class of ’84 has another newlywed! After meeting at church, Lisa Gordon-Hosch and Alex Hosch were married in a beautiful beach ceremony on the island of Kauai, HI, in late

October 2011, and spent the following days in paradise on their honeymoon. They later held an intimate Hawaiian–style reception for their family and friends at the Catamaran Resort & Spa in San Diego. Lisa and Alex reside in downtown San Diego. She is gushing with happiness! The hilarious and lovely Stacy Strader-Hogsett, Sarah Burke ’85 and their daughters took a cheese tour through the hills and vales of pastoral Vermont after Christmas. Stacy says, “The droll host at Cabot, sporting a cow-styled chef’s hat, urged them to put cheese on soup.” She didn’t tell any of her Texas relations, she says. She has also passed the time on Facebook finding Gawain Kripke’s child in every ’84 alumni photo except for hers. Stacy claims to have become the Waldo of ’84. Also educating her heart out, Margaret Szklany-Brown, is teaching five different subjects this year: Beginning Drama, Advanced Drama, Imaginative Writing, Shakespeare Studies, and Advanced Placement Language and Composition. Despite the extra work load, Margaret is still enjoying her 19th year of teaching, and has plans for trips to Vegas and Atlantic City this spring and summer with her husband, Bert. Margaret and Bert have also become an aunt and uncle for the ninth time. Among their intelligent, talented, and wonderful nieces and nephews are Cole, Georgia, and Sarah, children of Robert Brown ’86. And no, Margaret’s not the least biased when she describes them that way! Continuing with their “places we would never pay to go” tour (his words), Christian Curry and Nancy are using their frequent flyer points soon to fly to Dubai for the weekend for their anniversary. In March, they plan to go to San Francisco and abuse the hospitality of class-biographer-for-life Marianne. Gawain will be adding to his brood in August…a girl

this time. Moné Allard continues her fab life in San Francisco and made her annual trip to the Palm Springs Film Fest with Oliver Cleary and his partner Greg. She will be meeting Holly Stone, Stacy, Sarah and myself in NYC in the fall for Avon’s walk for breast cancer. Many from the Class of ’84 enjoyed the Alumni Regional event in San Francisco in January at the home of Kim Whitney ’73. Attendees included Jennifer “Lurie” Lombardi, Moné, Laurie Kindel ’83, Joan Whitney Flagg ’82, Sarah, Chanler Sparler, Rich Burns ’82, Sharon Gillenwater ’82, Catherine Porter ’83, and Luke Teyssier ’85 among others. Thanks to those of you who submitted your updates! My best to everyone and your families. —Marianne Eldredge Evenhuis

1985Kelliann Smith-Bailey is in Seattle and life is busy with two five-year-olds in pre-k. Her daughter, Sammi, spent six weeks this winter in a hip spica cast (body cast) after reconstructive hip surgery. Sammi’s condition is called developmental hip dysplasia and the surgery was to create a proper hip socket. Jake had the important task of bringing her fan mail home. It was amazing the love her classmates showed during this time. Kelliann and her partner were happy to hear Washington State approved same-sex marriage and hope it holds through the appeals. They went to DC for Easter and entered in the Egg Roll Lottery at the White House. Kelliann sees the Class of ’85 on Facebook and loves seeing the pictures. Michelle “Shellie” Martin is getting married, and what a coincidence, so is Costanza Genoese-Zerbi and Lindsay Sullivan—half of the basketball team. Shellie is getting married to Randy Pegler

1987 | 25th Reunion Daniel Simon is ready for our 25th Reunion! He just moved back into the “big city” of Steamboat Springs, CO, after living an idyllic 10 years at a ranch on the Elk River. Daniel’s son Nick (14) is a nationally ranked mogul racer and free style jumper and daughter Natalie (12) loves tennis, free-heel skiing, shopping, and school. Wife, Sarah, works for a cool social networking company named Welltok, LLC and Daniel works at Heliae Technology Holdings, Inc. (an algae technology company). Daniel looks forward to catching up with old friends at the reunion in May. Dave Rapallo hopes to make it to the West Coast in May as well. After working in Congress for a little more than 10 years, in 2009 Dave got an amazing opportunity to work in the White House for President Obama for a couple of years at the National Security Council. The job was really demanding, but very exciting. Last year, he went back to the Hill as the Democratic Staff Director for the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. He still thinks about San Diego almost every day and can’t wait to see everyone! Midge Raymond is still writing her heart out and teaching others how to follow their dreams, too. She will lead “Everyday Writing” Workshops at the San Diego Writers, Ink on May 24. Alex Schaefer teaches painting at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. His work is becoming more and more well known, especially of burning bank buildings. Guido Muzzarelli has been putting his artistic talents to use as well. He lives in the Bay Area and works in film animation for

Industrial Light and Magic. His most recent film is the comic book action thriller The Avengers due in theaters in May. Stephen Walker will do his best to attend reunion. He and his wife, Alejandra, are expecting their baby at the end of May so, if she goes into labor, he has an excused absence. As for me, Lynne Mathison, I’m still teaching elementary school at Evans in La Jolla. Can you tell how fast time flies—I had a parent teacher conference last fall with Shannon Crockett Kates. Her daughter is in my third grade reading class, but I remember when Shannon and I were in kindergarten together at Decatur. Labrina Harper Stratton and I have been working hard getting ready for our 25th Reunion over Memorial Day weekend—May 25-27. Last minute attendees are welcome. Riiinnngg, Riiiinnngg…JUNE IS ALUMNI CALLING MONTH—THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

Each year eager young alumni callers reach out to alumni sharing campus stories, collecting updates and asking for support of the Bishop’s Annual Giving Program.

We look forward to connecting with you soon.

FamilyMatters Catching up with…Josh Oliver ’96By Kathy Day

Filmmaker-soon-to-be-lawyer Josh Oliver ’96 was bitten by the industry bug while working for Stu Segall Productions after his junior year at Bishop’s. He continued at the San Diego-based production company while attending SDSU at night before moving to Los Angeles to finish his film degree at USC. Josh returned to San Diego when Veronica Mars called—well, her producers did. With nearly 20 films and TV shows under his belt, he came back to his La Jolla stomping grounds in 2011, recruiting some Bishop’s students for speaking parts and as extras, and using local scenery as Line Producer for the film, 16-Love. The teenage love story revolves around a 16-year-old tennis phenom whose life changes when she gets injured.

How did you get the students involved? Courtney Flanagan

asked her drama students to take on some roles. But part of the deal

was that I also took on one of her technical theater students. (I was

one of the first tech theater kids in her class.) Benjamin Doehr ’11

came on board as an intern and did an outstanding job. While you

were going to San Diego State part-time and working for the

production company, did you gain any insights into what

made your co-workers successful? I learned that the most

financially able people I saw rented their equipment back to the

productions they worked on. So I started accumulating equipment

and today have a couple thousand pieces of gear. I started and now

currently run my own equipment rental company: San Diego Film

Equipment. What’s your greatest career accomplishment so

far? When I became a Unit Production Manager and was admitted

to the Directors Guild of America in 2000. Most people have to work

their way up, but I jumped at the chance to start at the top. Fill in the

blank: My Bishop’s classmates probably would have named

me “Most likely to _______.” First to be employed. Who was the

most influential teacher you had at Bishop’s? Dr. Otto Mower,

art history inspired my interest in lighting, and Courtney Flanagan

who taught me not to limit my imagination when confronted by

technical confinements such as we confronted daily in the old theater.

What’s next? When the downturn hit four years ago, I started trying

to diversify my skill set. I realized that some of the producers I

admired were also attorneys, as were some of my Bishop’s

classmates. With three years at Cal Western law school behind me, I

take the Bar Exam in July. My primary drive now is in intellectual

property law, with a focus on copyrights and trademarks.
