Derived from the Latin word levitas meaning lightness.

Process by which an object is suspended by a physical force against gravity, in a stable position without solid physical contact.

MECHANICAL CONSTRAINT

. If two magnets are mechanically constrained along a single vertical axis, for example, and arranged to repel each other strongly, this will act to levitate one of the magnets above the other.

DIAMAGNETIC LEVITATION

Diamagnetic levitation can be used to levitate very light pieces of pyrolytic graphite or bismuth above a moderately strong permanent magnet.

As water is predominantly diamagnetic, this technique has been used to levitate water droplets and even live animals,such as a grasshopper, frog and a mouse.

How Transrapid Works

The electromagnets onthe underside of the trainpull it up to theferromagnetic stators onthe track and levitate thetrain.

The magnets on the sidekeep the train from movingfrom side to side.

DIFFICULTIES

The power requirements of electromagnets increase rapidly with load-bearing capacity,which also necessitates relative increases in conductor and cooling equipment mass and volume.

Superconductors require very low temperatures to operate, often helium cooling is employed .

CONCLUSION

So coming to the end I guess we all have a basic concept as to what is magnetic levitation all about.

This is a very wide and an emerging field. It also shows the capability of man that how on one hand he discovered Gravity and on the other ways to counteract it.

A new idea involving magnetic levitation is in

the use of storing energy.

The energy created by Magnetic fields can be easily replenished ,so it is also sustainable.
