    Thisdocumentdescribesonlythemastersleveldegrees.Alloftheprogramsstressasoundfoundationintechnicalfundamentals,communicationand

    professionalism.TheMSandMSEdegreeprogramsprepareengineersfordoctoralstudyorindustrial

    positionsthatspecializeinresearch,projectmanagementandproductinnovation.Thedoctoralprogram

    emphasizesoriginalresearchandprovidesstudentswithastrongbackgroundforemploymentby

    academicinstitutions,governmentlaboratoriesandindustrialresearchlaboratories. TheSchooloffersa

    broadbasedcurriculumindesign,systemsandcontrol;fluidmechanicsscienceandengineering;

    mechanicsanddynamicsofsolids;andtransportphenomena,thermodynamics,andenergy. Several

    interdisciplinaryprogramsarealsoaccessible. Moderncomputationalandlaboratoryfacilitiesare

    availableto

    support

    timely

    research

    investigations.

    The

    following

    sections

    provide

    information

    about

    programrequirements,policies,andcurriculum.

    2. Admissions PolicyItisthegoaloftheSchooltoachievebalance,totheextentpossible,betweendomesticand

    internationalstudents. TheSchoolwillstrivetoachievearepresentativepopulationofunder

    representedgroupsascandidatesforadvanceddegrees. Allapplicantswhohavecompleteapplications

    andmeetadmissionstandardswillbereviewed.

    assistantship,applicantsshouldcontactfacultymemberslistedasmechanicalor

    aerospaceengineeringgraduatefaculty,asresearchassistantshipsaredecidedby

    individualfacultymembers.

    ii) ThedecisionastowhomwillreceiveSchoolfinancialsupport(i.e.,fromthegeneral

    Schoolfund)willbedeterminedbytheSchoolsserviceneeds(e.g.,teaching

    assistants). AllgraduatestudentsonSchoolsupportwillbeassignedappropriate

    teachingrelatedduties. InternationalstudentsmustpasstheSPEAKtestwitha

    minimumscore

    of

    55

    to

    be

    eligible

    for

    School

    teaching

    assistantships.

    iii) Thedecisionastowhomwillreceivesupportfromresearchgrantsandcontracts

    willresidewiththeprincipalinvestigatorfromwhosefundsthestudentwillbepaid.

    Studentsmaycontactindividualfacultytoseewhatopportunitiesmayexist.

    v) Studentsmakingsatisfactoryacademicandprogramprogress(seeSection6),

    subjecttotheavailabilityoffunds,areeligibletoreceiveamaximumofthree

    semestersofSchoolsupport(ateachingassistantship)asMS/MSEcandidatesand

    fivesemestersofSchoolsupportasPhDcandidates. Studentsonacademic

    probationornewprovisionallyadmittedstudentsarenoteligibleforSchool

    support.

    vi)Students

    receiving

    financial

    aid

    must

    register

    for

    12

    hours

    of

    credit

    each

    semester

    in

    total;thesehoursmayincluderesearchanddissertationcredits.Thesestudents

    mustalsoregisterforMAE594GraduateResearchConference.Notethatanaudited

    coursedoesnotcounttowardthe12hoursandrequiresapetitiontotheSchool. If

    astudentonaTA/RApositionfallsbelow12credithoursduringthesemester,the

    SchoolhastherighttorevoketheTA/RApositionandbenefits. The12credithour

    registrationrequirementisonlyforthefall/spring. StudentsreceivingaTA/RA

    positioninthesummersessionsmustbeenrolledinatleastonecredithour.

    4. Graduate Programs4.a. Graduate Courses

    Graduatecourse

    offerings

    in

    the

    School

    cover

    the

    classical

    areas,

    including

    aerodynamics

    and

    fluid

    mechanics,designandmanufacturing,heattransferandthermodynamics,solidmechanicsand

    dynamics,andsystemdynamicsandcontrolaswellasinterdisciplinarytopicsinmicro andnano

    technologyandsustainability. AlistofcurrentcourseofferingsintheseareasisgiveninAppendixA.

    Studentsmustalsosatisfyamathematicsrequirement. Coursesthatmaybeusedtosatisfythis

    requirementarealsolistedinAppendixA.

    Onlygraduatecourses(500levelandabove)willcounttowardthecourserequirementsoftheMSand

    MSEdegrees. Coursesbelowthe500levelcannotbelistedontheiPOS. Auditedcoursesdonotapply

    towardthedegreeprogramandcannotbelistedontheiPOS. IngeneralSEMTEgraduatestudentsare

    notgrantedpermissiontoauditacourseuntilthestudenthasfiledaPlanofStudy(iPOS)andhas

    completedallcourseworkontheiPOS.

    4.b. Master of Science in Engineering (MSE) (Mechanical Engineering)

    TheMSEdegreeisthedefaultmastersdegreeinmechanicalengineering. Fulltimestudentscan

    completethedegreeprogramin12months,pertheexamplecurriculaprovidedinAppendixB. The

    UniversityrequirementsfortheMasterofScienceinEngineering(MSE)degreearegivenintheASU

    AcademicCatalog. MSEstudentscanchoosetotakeeitheracomprehensiveexamorcarryoutan

    appliedprojectunderthesupervisionofamemberoftheMEGraduateFaculty. Studentsmustselecta

    programcommitteechairpriortocompleting15credithours. Forstudentstakingthecomprehensive

    exam,theprogramcommitteechairwillnormallybetheMAEGraduateProgramChair,whilestudents

    requiresapprovaloftheGraduateProgramChair.

    Priortobeginningthesecondsemesterofstudy(springorfall,notcountingthesummer),thestudent,

    inconsultationwiththeprogramcommitteechair,mustfileaplanofstudy(iPOS)withtheUniversity

    throughtheMyASUsystem.TheprogramcommitteechairandtheGraduateProgramChairmust

    approvechanges

    to

    the

    iPOS.

    It

    is

    the

    students

    responsibility

    to

    ensure

    that

    the

    transcript

    and

    the

    iPOS

    Catalog. TheMSthesisoptionistheSchool'sresearchmaster'sdegree;majorsinAerospace

    EngineeringandMechanicalEngineeringareavailable. AmemberoftheMEorAEGraduateFaculty

    mustagreetoserveastheprogramcommitteechair(facultyadvisor)forastudenttobeadmittedorbe

    transferredtotheMSprogram. Thegraduateadvisorwillneedtohaveconfirmationfromthefaculty

    memberagreeingtoserveasthethesischairpriortoaplanchangebeingmadetomoveintotheMS

    degree.

    Thenameofthestudent'sprogramcommitteechairmustbefiledwiththeSchoolsGraduatePrograms
