(C. Coleman, K. Sabolsky, D. Solley)
Software Integration/DevelopmentM. Cheng, J. Thompson*, R. Dodrill*
*Graduate Student
- Upgrade for MAE 244 Lab (B. Kang)
- Upgrade for MAE Formula project (S. Wayne)(i) Fixed the existing cutoff saw and lathe digital readout in the MAE main shop, (ii) purchase a small bore engine lathe, and (iii) purchase a "used" cutoff saw
- Upgrade for MAE Aero Lab (W. Huebsch) (i) Construction of two removable test section (RTS) systems for the Low Speed Wind Tunnel (ii) Replacement components for MAE Aero Lab hot wire anemometer
- Restore the 1968 Mach 6 Hypersonic Tunnel (J. Loth, E. Thorpe*) (capable of continuous running, while producing a 6000 K plasma, using either argon or nitrogen gas in a plume about 5” in diameter)

On-going Updates (MAE 244)
• Digitize data collection for all tests (B. Kang, M. Cheng) – Install sensors (e.g. accelerometers and displacement sensors) for
readings not currently measured electronically– Utilize DAQ hardware to make all digital data recording– Shared data display and storage using cloud technology
• Centralized storage of all data files (M. Cheng) – Students can be provided on-demand access to data (e.g. through
WVU e-Campus/Google Drive)• Computerize control of equipment (e.g. tension test)
– Enable remote operation through web-interface (M. Cheng) • Computer imaging processing of CCD images (Photoelasticity
(existing), Digital Image Correlation (DIC) ($45K, paid by Dr. Barbero’s project) (B. Kang)
Tension Test – an example
Vision for MAE Next-gen Labs(M. Cheng, to establish software platform for MAE faculties)
• Equipment control via smart phone/tablet interface• Distance learning capabilities
– Webcams to interact with students on other campuses– Reduce crowdedness in lab by allowing students to
participate from other locations• Integrated multi-disciplinary design/analysis projects
– Familiarize students with team-based design projects– Highlight that design, FEA, and experimental testing
work together
