CONCEPT OF THE CONFERENCE

Our mother earth is an ideal habitat for wide variety of flora and fauna, which are

collectively known as Biodiversity. Biodiversity is a function of web of interactions taking

place between plants and animals. The interactions between them are very complex,

intricate and function in association with the abiotic environment. Since biodiversity is

the key for the structural and functional integrity of ecosystems and it is the foundation

for the very survival and sustainability of life on this planet, it is imperative to understand

the interactions and interrelationships that exist between plants and animals. Without

long term field studies, it is impossible to recognize and frame effective conservation

and management measures for the sustainability of biodiversity.

Being a tropical biodiversity hotspot country India possesses 7% of world biodiversity

(1,00,000+ fauna and 45,000+ flora) and has enormous potentials for a sustainable

future world. As per its marine natural and living resources are concerned, India has a

vast coastline of 7368 km2 and 2.02 million km2 of Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

Surprisingly, compared to other part of the worlds, India’s marine natural wealth has

been relatively unexplored.

Today, human activities are greatly threatening diverse ecosystems especially the seas

and coasts of India through overfishing, destructive fishing practices, pollution and

waste disposal, agricultural runoff, invasive alien species, and habitat destruction.

Global climate change will make it worse. Due to climate change sea levels will rise,

water temperature will increase, oceans will acidify, and there will be more storms and

natural disasters.

Oceans are utterly under-protected, with only about 0.8% of the oceans and 6% of

territorial seas being in protected areas. India adopted the Convention on Biological

Diversity is addressing various challenges to the conservation and sustainable use of

terrestrial as well as marine and coastal biodiversity resources. Through the ecosystem

approach, the Managers and Policy makers focus on the proper management of marine

coastal ecosystems and biodiversity resources.

GOALS OF THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE As part of Madras University Post-Centenary Diamond Jubilee celebrations,

the Centre for Environmental Sciences (CES) and Centre for Water

Resources Management (CWRM), are jointly organizing an International

Conference ‘Biodiversity and Sustainable Resources Management’

(ICBSRM 2018) to promote and disseminate the knowledge concerning

several topics related to current biodiversity issues and resources

management and possible remedies.

Page 3: Madras University Post-Centenary Diamond Jubilee ......Madras University Post-Centenary Diamond Jubilee International Conference on BIODIVERSITY AND SUSTAINABLE RESOURCES MANAGEMENT

The richness of India’s biological resources is an asset that needs to be

cherished, conserved and judiciously utilized. One of the major challenges

before the country lies in adopting a system which helps in utilizing this

biodiversity for benefit of humankind without compromising on risking the loss.

There is an urgent need to generate knowledge about the importance of

biodiversity and its direct link with existence of life on earth. Human resource

development in the area of biodiversity management is of utmost importance.

Awareness about the issues related to biodiversity, especially amongst the

scientific community is required to be intensified to the cause of promotion

better of biodiversity conservation.

The experts will discuss and share their expertise to address various

environmental issues and possible remedies for effective management and to

utilize our vast biodiversity resources in sustainable manner.

ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY OF MADRAS

The University of Madras was established in the year 1857 along with Mumbai

and Calcutta Universities. Having served the cause of higher education and

research during its glorious years of existence, the University of Madras was

five-star rating first, and later with an A rating. The UGC has recognized the

University as one of the centres for “Potential for Excellence" in the country.

The University of Madras is the mother of almost all the old Universities of

South India (neighboring states like Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh)

The University offers teaching and research programmes in its four campuses.

The 93 University Departments of study and research are spread over four

campuses organized into 18 Schools each of which offer Post Graduate

Courses in respective specialization, part time and full time Ph.D. Programmes,

Graduate and Post Graduate Education through the 130 Affiliated Institutions

which spread over the 3 districts of Chennai, Thiruvallur and Kancheepuram.

ABOUT THE HOST CENTRES

The University of Madras has established a full – fledged Centre for

Environmental Sciences (CES) in 2007 and Centre for Water Resources

Management (CWRM) in 2015, with multi- disciplinary approach for carrying

out Research and Development (R&D), besides human resources development

programmes in order to offer effective short and long term solutions at local and

at a global scale on environmental and Water Resources management.

The mission of the Centres are to generate knowledgeable manpower and to

carry out high quality inter-disciplinary research leading to development of new

eco-friendly and sustainable technologies to provide solutions for various

environment and water resources management related challenges, thereby

transferring the knowledge to industries, stake holders and to policy makers for
