Season record: 3-7 Coach: Don Hettich--5 (overall: 16-36)

* Might be biggest upset win in Mad. FB history...but with extenuating circumstances. Maroons were a 31-point underdog, but Hend. Coach Randy Reese’s mother had died that Monday in Ohio. Henderson wanted to put the game off until Saturday night, but Don Hettich (who was upset with Reese for a happening the previous year) said “No.” Reese missed all week of practice, arriving at the stadium at game-time. The previous year Reese had put his all-state running back, Daymon Carter, back into the game at the start of the 4th quarter so he could get the school single-game yardage rushing record. Carter promptly ran 60 yards for a touchdown, and Henderson won 47-0. Hettich claimed Henderson was running up the score.

**ALMOST! A 36-point underdog, Mad. led the whole way...until Christian County scored with 2 minutes left and made a 2-point conversion.

*Last game in old Maroon Stadium...which was constructed by the WPA and opened in 1937...on West Center Street. The game was postponed a day because of a deluge. It was still raining heavily Saturday night and the game was played in a quagmire. Former coaches were invited back; several made it.

This was the last year for the 30-year-old Big Eight Conference. 1988 was the third consecutive year that there were only six member schools.

* The night the pressbox upper deck floor boards started smoldering from an assistant coach’s cigarette...and someone called the fire trucks. Clouds of smoke rolled across the field and Pat Ryan (my colorman) ran downstairs to grab as many soft drinks as he could to bring ‘em up and pour on the floor. Most of the fluid went between the boards and landed on sportswriter Jim Pickens from the Messenger. Finally another assistant coach, who also was acting as a spotter, saw what was happening and stomped out the smoldering embers. I went to the pressbox the next week with a couple of members of the school board and they had part of the floor replaced.**Maroons 35-pt underdog; Hop 3-0, Mad 0-2 & hadn’t scored. 1st meeting between former Madisonville assistant coaches Bob Louden & Craig Clayton. Maroons won this one, but didn’t beat Hoptown/Craig again until 2000.

A Madisonville’s 6th overtime game (out of 22) since it was introduced on the high school level in 1977B Steve Tweddell and Dickie McDonald were assistant coaches together at Union County and were great friends.

The week of this game, Dickie told Steve in jest, “We’ll beat you; we always do.” Steve made a sign of that quip and put it up over the locker room door...and got the desired results.

C Henderson County got the win on a 10-yard pass with just seconds to play

The KHSAA re-worked the entire football classification. Starting in 1959, the first year for playoffs, all of the state teams were divided into Classes A and AA, while Jefferson County schools were designated AAA. Starting with this season, the state schools were divided into four classes. The Jefferson County schools were all 4-A and they had a playoff; the state 4-A schools had a playoff; then the two “champions” played for the overall 4-A title.

A Recreation Bowl game at Mt. SterlingB Madisonville tried a sweep from its own 2-yard-line, fumbled the ball and Paducah recovered it in the endzone

for a safety with 4:55 to play in the game. After having to punt, Madisonville got the ball back and marched down the field...only to lose a fumble at the Tilghman 7 yard-line with 24 seconds to play. Before that play the Maroons had another time-out and a down to spare...and armchair quarterbacks wanted to know why Madisonville had eschewed a field goal attempt. Bernard Brant said later, “We were going for the blankety-blank touchdown!” It was very windy with an incredibly cold wind chill.Paducah was ranked #1; Madisonville #5 by AP

A sophomore, Collins had scored 146 points and rushed for 2,003 yards...his second straight 1,000-plus yard season.

** The “Ice Bowl” game. They chipped ice off the seats so fans could sit down in War Memorial Stadium.I got to broadcast a high school game from that 1930’s WPA-built stadium when the Maroons visited Graves County in 1995, and I could practically feel the vibes from that venerable old place. Having said that, I found it odd that both Mayfield and Graves County...despite having fine new gyms...both still used it for football. Graves finally got a new stadium of its own in 2007.

A Designed as “The Shrine Bowl” game

This was the first year of football playoffs in Kentucky. The KHSAA divided the state’s teams into two classes by size: A and AA; and decided that all of the teams in Jefferson County would be called AAA.

At the end of this season Madisonville and 6 other schools withdrew from the 19-team Western Kentucky Conference. Those seven formed “The Big 8.” The other schools were Owensboro, Daviess County, Henderson City, Henderson County, Sturgis and Morganfield. The actual number of schools in the Big Eight fluctuated between 7 and 9 for years…then was down to 6 for the 1986 through ’88 seasons…before disbanding.

A The first time Madisonville had not played Hopkinsville on Thanksgiving Day in almost 50 years. It was Hoptown’s idea to change. Madisonville complained that finally the Maroons could play with the Tigers (having won 7 of the previous 8 games) in a series that was seriously lopsided in Hopkinsville’s favor before that. Hopkinsville considered Paducah to be its main rival and made Tilghman the season finale. As it turned

out, the playoffs began the next year and nobody had a regular-season game on Thanksgiving.

B The “muddy field” game. It had rained incessantly earlier in the week; then the fire department trucks were brought out to “water the field” before the game...and “inadvertently” left the water on all day Friday. The four men who made up Henderson City’s backfield...was the same four who won the state 400-yard relay the previous spring. (That’s the story the best I remember it...in 2004. I also remember that Tom Rhoads, Henderson’s quarterback during that time, had some strong feelings about that and the 1960 “lime” game...both played at Madisonville...some 25 years later)

C game played on Thanksgiving Day. The Maroons and Caldwell County always played their football game for a trophy...”The Old Hawg Rifle”

After one year of having co-coaches, the Madisonville school board decided in February, 1948, that Tunstill should be head coach and Welborn his assistant. Welborn quit the next day; Tunstill left before the start of the season. Welborn came back as an assistant in 1953 and became head coach in 1954. This was Frank Ramsey’s Senior year. An end, he caught a touchdown pass in each of the first three games...to account for all of the Maroons’ scoring in those contests. In the first game, he was also credited with tackling four Mayfield runners in the backfield. A home game with Clarksville High...the week after the Henderson game...was called off...I believe because of heavy rains.

* The “cowbell” game in Owensboro. Dean Dowdy’s Maroon Marching Band played “The Bells Of St. Mary’s” that included the use of bells on the field. As the band was getting ready to take the field at halftime, an Owensboro fan threw a cowbell that hit one of the gal Maroon bandsmen. Then, as they were playing that particular selection, Owensboro fans began shaking their cowbells so as to drown out the performance. So Dowdy ordered his band off the field in mid-performance.** How ironic that a season that was 6-0-1 at that point had its first points “given up” on a bad snap on a kick

attempt...in a 75-point win.

* Madisonville would have won the Little Sixteen Conference for the first time this year, but was required to forfeit a 19-0 season-opening win against Owensboro because Maroons’ quarterback Leon “Chickenbone” Roberts was allegedly too old. That left the Red Devils with an undefeated record and the conference championship.

Roberts had attended Central City (another conference school) at an earlier time and there was a question before the season started if he were 20 (which was legal) or 21 (which was not.) The Hustler twice-a-week newspaper listed him as a Senior during the 1928 season. Conference commissioner W. O. Wright (the principal at Owensboro) cleared him to play before the 1929 season started. But when Madisonville beat the Red Devils in the season opener, Wright started claiming that Roberts was too old. A six week investigation that eventually included the state association finally declared him to be 21 years old and ineligible. He hadn’t played in all of the games because of scholastic ineligibility.

A December, 1931 Messenger story by Brice Salmon reviewed the event and said a secret ballot of the Little 16 schools after the season required the Maroons to forfeit two conference games. Madisonville principal C.I. Henry, a man of principal who ordered his school to forfeit a game just a few years later, was adamant that the Maroons had been treated unfairly because of “a conspiracy between certain school officials” because of personal matters between them and Madisonville High School…and the school dropped out of the conference. When the Owensboro guy left to go to Fulton four years later, Madisonville rejoined the conference. The principal at Marion High School was the other big culprit. In 1925, Madisonville & Owensboro both said Marion was using “paid players”…and the principal there vowed vengeance…something he would not deny in the 1929 squabble.

** One report said game was played in a blinding snowstorm; another said terribly muddy conditions. Someone tore the pages out of the Messenger, so I never got to see the game story.

------------------------------------------------------------------The above information comes from my personal records. I have been working

my way backward through Messenger newspapers, then micro-film, day-by-day from 1973; I was the Madisonville play-by-play man from 1974 through 1996; and have gathered scores since then from local, wire service, newspaper & KHSAA sources.

Scores shown below...in the column on the left-hand side....are records gathered by Jim Griesch, sports editor of the Messenger in the early 1980’s. I’ll presume he used some newspaper archive information, but much he gathered from Madisonville High School yearbooks. I have corroboration of some of the scores, but different results from other sources on some of them. When there are differences, I will present source material. First Brice Salmon, then Hall

Allen wrote for the Messenger from 1925 to 1942. When the note mentions an Evansville newspaper (Courier, Press, or Journal,) it came from Bob Hall’s research. Bob is a Madisonville alumnus and fellow statistical nut. The “Henderson source” was a book written by longtime Gleaner sports editor Jack Hudgions covering the beginning of Flash football until 1950. The “Owensboro book” was a similar effort whose author I didn’t note. Not all of the scores in the earliest seasons have been obtainable. One other note: Madisonville and Hopkinsville played each other on Thanksgiving Day from 1921 through 1957...the season finale each time…except for 1925, 1932 & 1933.

This was the first year to play at Utley Field...on the South Seminary Street high school campus. It was 90 yards long...which required “borrow and pay back” rules. When you crossed mid-field, the ball was set back 10 yards so that to score, you had to drive the same distance as you would on a 100-yard field.

(Both Madisonville and Owensboro claimed Marion was using paid players. According to the Evansville Courier, the KHSAA suspended the Blue Terrors pending an investigation. Interestingly, it was the Marion principal who helped skewer Madisonville’s 1929 championship team…ironically with the help of the Owensboro superintendent.)
