LAFFS to visit Stream Cliff Herb Farm
LAFFS will be going to Stream Cliff Herb Farm on August 2, 2017. We have the first seating for lunch at
11:00 a.m. This will eliminate any delay in being seated and will make parking easier. Reservations are due
by noon on Sunday, July 30, 2017. Please call Janet at 812-265-2952 or Mary Elizabeth Goldsmith at 812-
273-4279.
The History of Stream Cliff Herb Farm
The history of Stream Cliff dates back to 1821. A bachelor, James Harmon, came to Indiana from Maine.
His family was from Pennsylvania and his father served in the Revolutionary War under Benedict Arnold.
President George Washington gave land grants to the Revolutionary War soldiers as there was no money to
pay the troops. James came to Indiana in 1821 to collect his father’s land grant. Jimmy lived in a hollow tree
and had pigs under the floor to keep him warm while he was in the tree. He built the big barn and baked the
bricks for the house which he built during the 1820s and early 1830s. He died in 1863. Having no heirs, he
left his farm and possessions to the Methodist Church (Asbury College). During the Civil War, Morgan’s
Raiders were at the farm on July 11, 1863. The road which runs in front of the farm was used by General
Morgan and his Raiders on their famous raid as they came north from Old Paris. The farm was purchased
from the Methodist Church by the family of the current owners. Six generations of family have lived on the
farm. Visitors continue to enjoy the Farm’s Tearoom and Winery.
The youtube link below presents a video of this
piece recorded in 2006 in Manchester, Eng-
land. This particular reading of the piece is notable
because it involves 700+ singers, contrasting the 40
singers usually employed, and because the architec-
ture of the space will allow you to see the divisions
between the eight choirs clearly.

I hope you enjoy the video. You are in my
prayers. Jonathan
Ministry updates
Fellowship Committee: The Fellowship Com-
mittee will be hosting a pitch-in on Sunday, August
13. We will provide fried chicken. We are asking
the congregation to bring other picnic type food and
desserts. We hope you will stay after worship ser-
vice and join us!
Membership Questionnaire: Our current
computer software system (PowerChurch Plus) of-
fers the ability to maintain personal profile records.
The information stored on these records can be ex-
tremely helpful when a member passes away, or
when used for something as simple as choosing
hymns for our annual Favorite Hymn service. With
this in mind, the Membership Ministry will distrib-
ute the accompanying questionnaire during the Au-
gust 6 worship service. We ask that you fill in as
much information as you are comfortable sharing,
and return the form on the following Sunday, Au-
gust 13, during the Fellowship Pitch-in. Please
note; this is strictly a voluntary action on your part,
but one that will be helpful to future church
ministries.
A Deacon’s Message
Last year when I was asked to be a Deacon, I
was honored but had substantial concerns about
responsibility and time requirements. That was
before. Now, I am amazed.
Amazed at the teamwork.
Amazed at the sharing.
Amazed at the streamlined use of text and
email.
Amazed, most of all, at the gratification in
being able to help others.
The satisfaction in my heart. The satisfaction
in my soul. The satisfaction in knowing I’m
doing God’s handiwork. Such little investment
of effort with such high and grand rewards.
They will be looking for new Deacons to re-
place those that are required to step down by
our constitution. Please consider grasping this
role. Become amazed. Become gratified. Fill
your soul. Dan Smith
Musical Notes
Certainly one of the most complicated and
lovely choral works ever written is “Spem in
Alium” by Thomas Tallis (c. 1505-1585). This
miraculous work requires 40 independent voices
organized into eight choirs of five voices
each. Apocryphally, Tallis composed this piece
to compete with a 30 voiced composition by an
Italian contemporary. The end result is a
gigantic soundscape, unique to the repertoire. A
translation of the Latin text, copied from
Wikipedia, follows.
I have never put my hope in any other
but in Thee, God of Israel
who canst show both wrath and graciousness,
and who absolves all the sins
of suffering man
Lord God,
Creator of Heaven and Earth
Regard our humility.
Membership Ministry: The Membership Ministry is responsible for the accuracy and relevance of the names appearing on the weekly Prayer List in the church bulletin. Please take a few moments to review the name(s) or institution(s) you have provided for inclu-sion, make a determination as to the relevance of contin-ued inclusion on the list, and contact Janet in the church office to make any corrections or removals that are ap-propriate; in this manner we can maintain an accurate and manageable Prayer List.
ACES: The potluck suppers and programs sponsored
by the Adult Christian Education Subgroup (ACES) will
not be held in August. Please plan to join us on Thurs-
day, September 7, when we again will share a meal and
begin a study of a five-part DVD series entitled “Who Is
This Man?”
Finance Committee/Reimbursement Policy: The Finance Committee recommended to Session,
which was approved, that a deadline be placed on
submitting receipts for reimbursements and receipts for
“in-kind” giving. In-kind giving is where you purchase
items for the church, like coffee hour supplies or meal
items for the juvenile facility, and you don’t want to be
reimbursed but you want the contribution counted
towards your end-of-the-year giving statement for your
taxes. Effective August 31, 2017, all reimbursements
and in-kind receipts must be submitted by the end of the
following month. All reimbursements and in-kind
receipts incurred for this calendar year not yet turned in
must be submitted by August 31. For example, if you
purchase items in September that need to be reimbursed,
your receipt must be turned in no later than the last
business day of October, which is the 31st. Please
remember to keep items purchased for the church on a
separate receipt from personal items. Please note that
December receipts must be received no later than
December 31.
Finance Report: A finance report is not available
for June since Session did not meet in July.
Google My Business: For the month of June:
492 people viewed our church from a
Google search
8 people asked for directions
18 people visited our website from a
Google search
3 people called our church from their
Google search
MPC currently has one 5-Star review. Please
consider writing a review of our church on
Google to encourage more visitors to attend!
Volunteers needed: The CE committee
needs you! We need at least one more nursery
volunteer, and we need at least two more
teachers for our elementary Sunday School
program. If you are interested, please contact
Don Wiest at [email protected] or 812-801
-3163. You can also speak to Susan Ohlen-
dorf, as well. Be a part of these special minis-
tries.
Nominating Committee: The Nominat-
ing Committee is looking for individuals to
serve as Elders and Deacons to the class of
2020. If you would like to nominate someone
from the congregation for consideration,
please contact one of the Nominating Com-
mittee members. They are: Mike Dorsey,
Shannon Glass, Gina Freeman, Terri Brunner,
Larry Newhouse, and Rick la Cour.
