– India – 2nd largest producer of cement
in the world
– Total installed capacity for production
of cement is around 231 MT (as on
Sept. 2009)
– Capacity utilization in first eight
months of 2009-10 was 83% (from
96% and 90% in 2007-08 and 2008-09
respectively, reduced due to significant
capacity additions)
– During 2008-09, total cement
consumption was 178 million tonnes
while exports around 3 million tonnes
– A strong CAGR of 9.3% during the
period 2004-05 to 2008-09

– Cement production in a region depends on
availability of lime stone & coal
– North India: largest cement consuming region,
37% of the all-India consumption and 42% of the
available capacity
– Within North India, UP, Rajasthan, MP & Haryana
are large cement consuming States
– Eastern India is the least cement consuming region,
with about 14% of the all-India consumption and
only 9% of the available capacity
– It sources its balance 5% cement requirements
mostly from North India due to absence of
adequate limestone reserves in Eastern States
– The largest cement consumer within Western India
is Maharashtra, which consumed almost 60% of
the regional consumption & 12.3% of the total
domestic cement consumption in 2008-09.
– South India: 30% of the total domestic consumption
of cement, the 2nd largest cement consuming region
after North India
– North India is hence a cement-surplus region
and East India a cement-deficit region
– Cement is sourced from Chhattisgarh and MP
for consumption by Eastern States
Raw materials account for a major chunk in
cost of cement production

– Cement consumption increased by 18% in
2009-10
– Production at more than 100% capacity
utilization in last four years
– Satna – main cement producing region in MP
with many major cement plants located there
– Total installed capacity of production of
cement in MP is 19.37 MT (as on March 2009)
– MP accounts for around 12% of India’s total
cement production capacity
– The State consumes approximately 40% of its
total production

Source: Economic Survey of MP 2009-10, www.mp.gov.in; * upto Dec 2008
– At 795 million tons, MP has around 6% of the
total limestone reserves in India
– MP ranks 3rd in limestone production in India
Limestone production in the year 2008-09 *
was 19312.12 thousand tonnes
Accounted for 12.79% of total limestone
production in India
– The highest cement consuming region of the
country – the Western region - is located in
proximity to the State
– Madhya Pradesh well connected to those
regions
– Availability of coal in the State gives a good option to cement
manufacturing companies to set up captive power plant so as to
save their power cost in production of Cement.
– Limestone deposits of 8 mn tonnes in Damoh-Panna area and 20
mn tonnes in Bela-Pagra of Rewa considered highly prospective
regions for Cement manufacturing.
