Principal’s Message Welcome to our last newsletter for Term 3 and it has certainly been a productive one. We have been involved in Parent Teacher Night interviews, Education Week, Science Week, Mind Marathon, HSC Trials, Year 10 Work Experience, HSC Music exams and practical works in TAS all marked. We had an amazing evening of talented student displays at our M.A.D.E. Exhibition showcasing the extraordinary work our students and staff do. We have continued with our Primary Links program and our Literacy and Numeracy focus. We are presently in the process of planning and costing the development of our new Design Centre which will include state of the art technology and student collaborative spaces. We are providing Years 7-10 with access to Education Perfect and we have recently purchased an extended e-book catalogue for the Accelerated Reading Program. In partnership with the school’s P&C we have ordered $53,000 worth of outdoor seating, some which will enable the boys to enjoy their free time under cover. However all of these wonderful, engaging learning experiences cost significant amounts of money and are directly funded from our school fees. At a recent budget meeting the committee investigated our outstanding school fees and we were shocked to see an outstanding amount of money to the sum of $204,979. If our families were able to finalise their outstanding school fees over the coming term we could significantly improve the quality of facilities and learning opportunities for our students. To begin this process East Hills Boys High School will be sending student statements of account & fee reminders directly to parents via email using a system called School Bytes. These statements will include a user friendly link to make secure payments online through the Westpac Parent Online Payment (POP) system (Visa & Mastercard credit/debit cards accepted). Instructions on how to use will be included in the email. We may at times also send you fee reminders and notes for excursions and events through School Bytes. This will allow you to easily download notes, permission forms and make payment all with one click.

On Thursday 30th August, ten students in Year 11 attended the annual SRC Leadership Conference at Revesby Worker’s Club. The day involved a number of leadership-building and self-reflection activities in which students examined their own reasons for becoming part of the Senior Leadership Team and how they can best serve the school and their local community. Throughout the day, the group worked with Mrs Savins, Mr Willson and Ms McKenzie, each targeting different areas and styles of leadership. In one session the boys heard valuable stories and advice from our guest speaker, Mr John Seru, a successful business owner and television personality. In the final session of the day the students underwent several voting processes to elect our new School Captain, Vice-Captain and Senior Prefect. On behalf of the staff of EHBHS, we would like to commend and congratulate the new Senior Leadership Team for their participation and enthusiasm. It is with great pleasure that we announce the following school leaders for 2019:

Youth and Road Trauma Forum
How often do you hear in the news that a P-plate driver and their passengers have had a car crash and become another fatality? It’s become so common that young people develop the attitude on the road that it will not happen to them. On Wednesday 29th August, Year 11 attended the Youth and Road Trauma Forum as part of the mandatory Crossroads course for Year 11. The event was held at Allphones Arena, Homebush. While the extensive Road Safety program the boys receive in the Stage 5 PDHPE and Stage 6 Crossroads course equips them with knowledge, it doesn’t compare to sitting in an arena with 7,000 other students the same age and witnessing a realistic car crash scene to help drive home the road safety message. The forum provided the boys with a realistic look at the trauma caused by road crashes and aims to give them information and strategies in an attempt to reduce serious injuries and deaths. The day included an exciting combination of demonstrations, crash dynamics and rescue, vehicle stopping distances and active exhibits. The main message the PE Faculty wanted the boys to get out of the forum is that you can prevent yourself and others from being injured by doing a few simple things: Don’t be distracted while driving whether it’s caused by friends, using a mobile phone, text messaging or drink driving. Always be safe in a car and keep others safe as well. Mr Carson PDHPE Head Teacher

Towards the end of term 2; myself, Mrs Naiker & Mr Prestwidge moved into our new Science rooms. We patiently waited for almost two terms to move into our rooms and the wait was definitely worth it! The newly renovated Science rooms are made up of two full labs and 1 dry lab. Students as well as the teachers are enjoying their teaching and learning time in the new rooms, especially with the presence of air conditioning and smart board units in each classroom. Two of the rooms are Biology based labs, while the third is a Physics room, however all three rooms can be used for any Science lesson. One of the rooms is also being set up as a Marine room, to enhance student learning in the Marine Studies course. Year 10 Marine Studies students are currently in the process of setting up fish tanks in all the Science rooms, which the year 9 and 10 Marine Studies students will be taking care of as a learning experience, linking classroom learning to the real world. Here is a sneak peak of the rooms…

Creative and Performing Arts VISUAL ARTS - LETS CREATE!!! Year 7 are turning into experts on Photoshop, creating digital graphics inspired by Aboriginal Art. Year 8 are looking at the world around them, making brochures about where they live. Things are getting crazy using Photoshop to create MAMBO inspired Tshirt designs. Year 9 have begun exploring environments and will be making lino prints about the built environment. Year 10 have explored Street Art. “Is It Art or Vandalism?” Through the exploration of well-known artists such as Banksy, they have created their own skateboard designs and very soon will begin the design of our storage container with a theme of “Knowledge is Power”… Check out the awesome looking decks below.
Year 11 are about to finish their Preliminary course! We look forward to seeing their final artworks. Year 12 – The Major Art Works are done!!! Finally after a year of struggles and torturous challenges, the boys, Mr Bardas and Mr Suteski have overcome all obstacles and we have produced some fantastic artworks. We will now wait in anticipation for our results. Good luck boys.
Music – ROCK N ROLL… It has been a busy term in Music!! Students were able to showcase their skills and talents at the CAPA exhibition at EHBHS. This was a great success with a strong turnout from students, family and friends who came to support and enjoy a range of solo and ensemble pieces. Year 12 got some final preparation for their practical pieces, which they performed for HSC markers in week 7. All students did an amazing job, performing 4 pieces each from a range of repertoire. Performers are busy rehearsing for the final gig of the year, year 12 graduation. This spot is reserved for high quality ensemble pieces worthy of sending year 12 out with a bang!

Literacy/numeracy program:
Some big reminders to students and parents!
Year 7 students: Make sure you are completing your at-home reading for the Accelerated Reader program! At least 20 minutes per evening is needed – and you may wish to do some extra book-borrowing for the upcoming holidays.
Year 8 students: We are now in the fifth week of Google Classroom literacy/numeracy weekly homework exercises, and it is really important that you are making your best attempt at these – and checking the solutions, each week.
Year 10 students: There will be a final opportunity, in Term 4, to attempt Minimum Standards tests in 2018. All students who have not so far demonstrated these standards will be expected to make this attempt in Term 4. These students need to see me about ways to prepare themselves. And congratulations to the large number of Year 10 students who have successfully completed the tests this Term! Parents will shortly be updated about their sons’ progress in these all-important programs. If there are further enquiries, please ring Mr Bawden (Literacy/numeracy Support Person) at the school (Thursdays/Fridays).

Attendance is recorded each day. As a parent or caregiver you are responsible for ensuring your child attends school every day, including sports days unless your child:
has an unavoidable medical or dental appointment (preferably these should be made after school or during holidays)
is required to attend a recognised religious holiday
is required to attend an exceptional or urgent family circumstance (such as attending a funeral)
is sick, or has an infectious illness.
Students need to attend school regularly to meet the course requirements of the Higher School Certificate.
If you are having difficulty getting your child to attend school regularly, you might like to talk to the school principal or the school counsellor.
If your child has to be absent from school for any reason, including arriving late or leaving early, please either tell your child's teacher or the administration assistant at our school, or explain the reason by phone, email, or written note as soon as possible and within seven days. The school uses automated SMS to inform parents of any unexplained absences or unexplained late arrivals. You can reply to this SMS with the reason for your son’s absence so our system can be updated accordingly. Please reply with a valid reason eg. – sick, religious holiday, etc. Replying with a “Yes” does not validate your son’s absence and further correspondence will be sent.
Have you
moved?
If you have recently changed your residential address, we require proof to update your son’s student details. A change of address form can be picked up from the Front Office to be completed and handed back with supporting documentation such as a copy of a rate’s notice, lease agreement or electricity account. Please contact the office if you have any queries 9773 7806.

Take your holidays when we do!
Parents, students and teachers are concerned when students fall behind in their studies because of long absences. Families who plan to travel are encouraged to travel during school holidays. Parents are reminded that they must seek permission from the Principal to take a student out of school during term time as attendance must be maintained at or above 85%. If you require to take your child out of school during term time, please make
an appointment to discuss your plans with the Principal or Deputy Principal
before booking flights or accommodation as you may be asked to cancel
them if this brings your child’s attendance under 85%. The Principal has information to assist families to
plan holidays that are least disruptive to their children’s schooling.
Just a reminder regarding your BYOD Permission notes should be returned to your Year Advisor when you
have organised your device to use at school.
TUESDAYS are a no device day as you will be attending sport.
Please remember to use your device responsibly.
It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to ensure your device is always in a secure
and damage free location.
Your device should come to school fully charged ready for your lessons
CHANGE OF POLICY

system.
