an automated message system sponsored by Macville’s School Council. The purpose of this system is to
keep parents informed of upcoming and important events that are occurring in our school community;
for example, upcoming school events, School Council meetings and school closures. Please make sure
that the school has your current home phone number.
MILK, COOKIE AND ICE-CREAM SALES
If your son/daughter is going to be absent or late please take a moment to call the school and leave

The Shoestring Opera Presents Carmen à la récré April 17 at 1:30
We welcome the return of The Shoestring Opera on Wednesday, April 17. The company will
perform Carmen à la récré (The Schoolyard Carmen). Bizet's unforgettable music supports the
inspiring story of Carmen--a feisty newcomer to Canada. The coolest kid on the schoolyard
tries to bully her, but she stands up to him. This bilingual presentation addresses Macville's
focus on Character Education, as well as meeting curricular expectations in Core French, Music,
and Drama.
Parents and other guests are welcome to join the audience of Kindergarten through Grade 8
students, and Macville's staff. Provincial funding for "French learning opportunities for stu-
dents" has subsidized this performance. Showtime is 1:30 in the gym.
Three on Three Basketball
“February Madness" arrived for the grade 6, 7 and 8 students who entered the Three on
Three Basketball tournament. Teams battled for supremacy in class time during free gym
periods, cheered on by their classmates. Senior students acted as referees and scorekeepers
and Mr. Heslop and Mlle Chateauvert supervised. Eight girls' teams competed with Kiranjit,
Kuljit and Maneet (Gr. 6); Allison, Samantha and Anu (Gr. 7) and Nicole, Jade and Nina (grade
8) victors at their grade levels. The teams continued their excellent play in the finals with one
victory to each time . Thirteen boys' teams entered the competition. Yuvraj, Rory and Keshav
(Gr. 6); Abhishek, Gurjot and Ethan (Gr.7) and Claye, Tremaine and Marcus (Gr. 8) emerged as
grade level champs, and then the Grade 8 threesome dominated play in the finals.

the week of April 1t5h - 19th. This year's winner will be announced in May and the annual Chapters/

Once again, unique and tra-
ditional to Macville P.S., we
made our "Stone Soup".
Students from Kindergarten
up to and including Grade 8,
contributed to the POT.
They brought everything from
spices, pasta, rice, potatoes,
carrots, onions, peppers, barley
and the list went on and on.
By late morning, the smell was
wafting throughout the entire school. Everyone had their fill and, once again, we were able to share
and all come together for yet another sharing experience at Macville.

Help us to encourage and enhance parent involvement in Peel Apply for a position on the board's Parent Involvement Committee
Under the Ministry of Education's Parent Involvement Policy, all boards must have a committee comprised of a
majority of parents that is directly linked to the director of education and trustees. The Peel board Parent Involve-
ment Committee (PIC) meets regularly throughout the school year to review the board’s plans for parent involve-
ment as they relate to parent, family and community engagement, and to make suggestions to schools, councils and
the board regarding additional parent outreach.
As mandated by the ministry, the purpose of Peel board's PIC is to:
support, encourage, and enhance meaningful parental involvement within schools and across the district, in-
cluding, outreach to parents who find involvement more challenging
work collaboratively with the school board to support student success
seek out the advice and ideas of school councils, and other parents and partners as they plan and implement
strategies to involve more parents at the regional level
develop strategies for enhancing parental engagement and outreach
Membership is a majority of parents, reflecting the diversity of the parent community. Parent representatives will be
required to serve two-year terms, beginning in September and ending in August.
We are now in the process of inviting parents to apply for four positions on the committee. In early May, a selec-
tion sub-committee consisting of current parent and trustee members will review all parent applications and select
representatives using the following Parent Member Selection Criteria as a guide:
reflects the diversity of the community
understands the importance of parent, family and community engagement
has experience working with newcomers to Canada, Ontario or Peel
has volunteer experience – including experience on school council
has previous experience in Peel board parent involvement activities
demonstrates advocacy and community development skills
has a present level of involvement in the education system
demonstrates a keen interest in public education
For more information about the PIC and to download the application package, visit www.peelschools.org. Under the ‘Parents’ menu, select ‘Get Involved’ and ‘Parent Involvement Committee’.
Forms must be returned by April 26, 2013.

Earth Week – April 17 to 24, 2013
Earth Week encompasses the international celebration of Earth Day on April 22. This is the most celebrated environmental event
worldwide. Initiated in 1970, this event has been considered the birth of the environmental movement.
Each year, more than 6 million Canadians join 500 million people in over 180 countries in staging events and projects to address
local environmental issues. In Canada, Earth Day has grown into Earth Week and even Earth Month to accommodate the profusion
of events and projects. Here are some ways that you can celebrate earth week with your family:
create a backyard or schoolyard habitat
plant a garden or tree
start a recycling program at home
organize a carpooling campaign in your neighbourhood to reduce air pollution
pick up trash in your neighbourhood
read a book about an endangered species
make a visit to your local zoo, aquarium or museum
visit a local park, wildlife area or farm to provide a fun opportunity to learn about the environment and life
Peel schools honour police officers during Police Appreciation Week
The Peel District School Board will pay tribute to police officers by holding Police Appreciation Week from May 5 to 11, 2013.
Peel students and staff will show their appreciation for the tremendous job being done by police to protect schools, homes and com-
munities. Police Appreciation Week coincides with National Police Week. National Police Week pays tribute to the work of police
officers across Canada.
"The Peel board appreciates the dedication and commitment of police officers who work to keep our schools and communities safe,"
says Janet McDougald, Peel board chair. "Police Appreciation Week is our way of thanking officers who dedicate themselves to
protecting our community. It's also a way to give these officers the special recognition they deserve."
During this week, students, staff and parents in schools throughout Brampton, Caledon and Mississauga will honour the work of
police officers and thank them for enhancing public safety and security.
