Power Architecture™ Embedded Resource Catalog 2008

Welcome to the Power Architecture™

Embedded Resource Catalog!Thank you for picking up this copy of the Power Architecture™ Embedded Resource Catalog. It’s an eye-opening guide to one of the most innova-tive directions for embedded computing.

The industry has evolved dramatically since 1991 and the first RISC architecture chips. Power microprocessors and cores have broken through to take starring roles in every kind of design dream -- from handhelds to mainframes and from enterprise class servers to video game consoles. In every case they deliver high performance, power optimization, and excellent value.

But the best news may just be developing. In his report, “What Makes Chips Different,” industry veteran Ed Sperling examines IBM and Sam-sung’s efforts to cost effectively embed functionality through software. This first beneficiaries of this effort are likely to be IBM’s partners in its growing Power Architecture (Power.org) ecosystem, which includes companies such as Freescale, Sony, Cadence Design Systems, Syn-opsys and Applied Microcircuits (AMCC).

One promising result of the reusable embedded software initiative would be to decrease the necessity of designing new chips for every new device. A single chip could serve many needs because the embedded software modules would provide different functionality. As Ed explains, the new approach would also provide the editing, validation and con-figuration tools to make the vision practical.

In the pages of this guide you’ll find Ed Sperling’s article and much more information on impressive new products and services. This catalog will be a solid resource for the whole year. Please send your feedback, thoughts and comments to:

UnlockingMulticore’sPotential

Multicore architectures have opened up a new challenge for embedded developers: how to effectively tap the pure processing potential of multicore platforms. Multi-core platforms require software engineers to spend significantly more time thinking about software architecture. Optimizing the performance of multicore processors means embracing parallel processing, which can be a challenge given the long and successful history of single-core sys-tems that are largely self-synchronizing. A related challenge is that the majority of the networking installed base is still operating on a mixture of single-core processors, ASICs and DSPs. Developers have the enormous task of effectively migrating millions of lines of code to multicore architectures.

So what development considerations matter when it comes to addressing these challenges and unleashing the power of embedded multicore technology in your applications?

Comprehensive VirtualizationVirtualization is one approach to simplify the multicore programming challenge. Stated simply, virtualization is typically a trusted layer of software that manages resources and access to them. It dedicates resources to cores, as appropriate, when the system is initialized and manages access to shared resources during system runtime.

As part of our Multicore Platform, Fre-escale is implementing an embedded hypervisor in the processor core to enable a more streamlined implementation with less software overhead. This is made possible with the Power ISA™ embedded hypervisor privilege mode. Through this embedded hypervisor, Freescale’s Multicore Platform will provide hard-ware mechanisms that help to ensure cores only access the resources (memory,

peripherals, etc.) that they are designated to access. In addition to this embedded hypervisor, Freescale’s multicore solu-tion will include data path accelerators that inherently virtualize access to net-work interfaces by decoupling them from the cores. Any core can send or receive packets on any network interface without the need for inter-core synchronization in software.

Freescale is also developing a lightweight virtualization layer that will be avail-able to the open source community, and we are supporting community projects like the kernel virtual machine (known as KVM) and Power.org’s new eHYPE technical subcommittee, which will be addressing this issue with more advanced and sophisticated Linux® solutions.

Advanced SimulationWith multicore architectures, advanced simulation technology is also becoming paramount. The simulation environment can present a programmer’s view of the system, which accelerates the develop-

ment cycle, provides more flexible debug capability and improves the overall quality of software. Freescale is partnering with Virtutech to offer a virtualized software platform which enables pre-silicon and post-silicon development. This hybrid functional and cycle-accurate simula-tion tool gives developers the speed of a functional model for early development and the precision of cycle-accurate models to identify performance bottlenecks. This combination enables fast hardware concept testing and evaluation, as well as performance verification.

Debugging VisibilityMulticore SoCs are complex devices with multiple cores, hardware accelerator blocks, memory, caches and network peripherals. As such, debugging solutions should strive to provide greater system visibility to all of these elements. Freescale is engineering the necessary hooks in our Multicore Platform to enable advanced debugging of the platform, and we are also working in tandem with industry leading vendors to assure the availability of tools that can take advantage of these features. These hooks include, among others, trace capabilities on the cores, watchpoint triggers, cross triggering capabilities, per-formance monitoring capabilities on the cores and SoC and the Power ISA defined debug features.

By Ed Sperling

Re-using embedded software has been the subject of exuberant marketing for nearly two decades—and so far it has amounted to little more than that. But in recent months, quietly and far from the blaring hype, real-world testing is under way to use software as a cost-effective means to embedding functionality in a wide range of devices. Perhaps no where is this devel-opment of re-useable embedded software more evident than with the major players of the Power Architecture (Power.org) community – especially with IBM.

The most experiment in re-useable soft-ware comes from a joint effort between Samsung and IBM’s Haifa Research Lab in Israel. If all goes as planned, IBM plans to begin commercializing what is essentially a middleware framework that allows embedded software to plug in and differentiate semiconductors. That means in many cases it will no longer be necessary to build new chips for every new device.

Exactly where this plays in the real world is unknown, but the first beneficiaries are likely to be IBM’s partners in its growing ecosystem, most notably the members of Power.org, which includes companies such as Freescale, Sony, Cadence Design Systems, Synopsys and Applied Microcir-cuits (AMCC).

The re-usable code project is based on what IBM calls the Consumer Electronics Development Environment, known inside IBM as COMPETENCE. At the heart of this environment are archi-tecture description languages, a class of descriptive languages that includes Darwin, C2 and Acme, to provide a high-level of abstraction for writing software. None actually exists for the consumer electronics world, a fact that IBM wants to change and to capitalize on.

Normally, embedded software is written for specially developed processors with very specific functionality. With COMPE-TENCE, a single chip design theoretically will be sufficient to replace many designs, because the embedded software modules will add different functionality.

The advantages are immediately obvious to anyone who has designed chips for such areas as cell phones or MP3 players. Each chip can cost many millions of dollars to develop, with those costs esca-lating at each new process node. At 65nm and 45nm, non-recurring engineering costs render it impossible to earn a profit without an enormous sales volume. Adding more functions only increases that cost, and it can slow the time it takes to bring products to market, in large part because of the difficulty of verifying the chip.

“The world of modeling is well known in hardware because it’s so difficult to work with,” said Alan Hartman, research sci-entist manager at IBM’s Haifa Research Lab. “In software, this is new. But when you look at the cost of a luxury car, a large part of that cost is the software.”

History repeats…sort ofIn the realm of software, component-based systems engineering is a relatively new field. Some of the groundbreaking research was performed by Philips Electronics a decade ago using various component models, and in the mid-1990s many software companies including IBM had plans for software objects—portions of applications rather than applications themselves—that could be bundled together like Legos and plugged into a framework.

The problem was that at the application level, these software objects never played together like a single-vendor plug-and-

play system. IBM, however, was large enough and had enough of an investment in middleware that it could shift the development to where there was a strong business need. That need grew as the cost of developing ASICs and ASSPs escalated into the tens of millions of dollars.

“If you look at multifunction printers, some have faxes, scanners, and different speeds, and each is implemented by a separate component,” said Hartman. “We can design a new printer with new com-ponents so you only have to write a very small amount of code.”

The approach plays off of the holistic design that IBM has been pitching for the past several years. “What this allows you to do is manage a product line as a whole,” said Julia Rubin, an IBM research scientist for industry solutions in the Haifa Lab. “You determine what features you want, and only the pieces you want go to market.”

That works in principal, at least. But the real trick in this scenario is what is rele-gated to software. Tony Massimini, chief of technology at Semico Research, said certain functions are fine in software, particularly with a powerful PowerPC processor running those functions. But he said the model runs into trouble when it comes to video because the response time has to be so high that it needs to be hard-wired into the processor.

“The PowerPC has a lot of performance, and if it’s not a portable application you may get away with it in software,” Mas-simini said. “If you look at a car, the response time versus streaming video is easy to accomplish in software. With a portable application, you can overload the processor.”

Industry Forecast

Whatmakeschipsdifferent?IBM, Samsung team up to differentiate chips with embedded software modules, but can it work this time?

Page 23: Macraigor Systems Flash programmer Power Architectureeproductalert.com/digitaledition/power/Power Architecture Embedded... · user interface. The product allows custom GUIs or.BAT

www.eecatalog.com/power 21

What’s in the package? What IBM and Samsung are developing goes beyond just writing embedded software, though. Hartman said the companies also are providing an editing environment, the ability to validate the software with rules and to configure a particular product.

“Then, at the touch of a wand, you get general building scripts,” he said. “Com-panies in consumer electronics have already moved to a component-based architecture, so this is a natural fit. What we’re also doing is taking legacy code and componentizing it.”

When exactly that will become produc-tized remains to be seen, however. At this point, the legacy code work is relegated to some future date. IBM will offer that type of work as a service through its con-sulting group. However, IBM researchers contend that fixing the bugs in software is a relatively simple and inexpensive process, versus trying to fix them in hardware. In part, that is because the programming languages for software are relatively f lexible. C++, for example, is

highly modular, compared with trying to scour through massive amounts of verifi-cation data to pinpoint a bug and then fix it in hardware.

Language issuesOne of the reasons that ADLs remain rel-atively unknown in design is that there is no single standard. As such, there is no agreement on what needs to be included in the overall description.

IBM is looking to establish such as standard for the consumer electronics industry, along with a modeling frame-work that third-party components can plug into to provide consistent behavior. IBM said it also plans to extend that frame-work to other industries in the future.

At least part of that will be based on a standard modeling framework, called the Unified Modeling Language. IBM’s COM-PETENCE relies on the Rational toolset (see diagram), which allows designers to develop components based on established models. But how quickly all of this tech-nology comes to fruition, and just how widely it is deployed, remains to be seen.

Building better software, particularly for the embedded world, is not a new problem.

ReaL-WoRLd appLicationsWhat this means for chipmakers such as Freescale, interconnet makers such as AMCC, and large OEMs such as Sony depends on when and how this tech-nology hits the market. Nevertheless, such moves could make both companies more competitive because re-usable code means faster time to market and lower NRE costs.

In Freescale’s case, for example, such code could be used across a raft of vertical market applications, including automo-tive, consumer electronics, industrial, and wireless, while for AMCC the code would be used in embedded interconnect applications. In Sony’s case, re-usable code could help cut NRE costs in the consumer electronics market, where price is a key dif-ferentiator for many of its competitors.

TQM8360 – high-density integrated processor module

The TQM8360 is the most versatile member of the IT PowerQUICC II Pro family from TQ Components IT supports virtually all interfaces and protocols that are required today in typical applications, such as DSL and wireless infrastruc-ture, IP-based PABX, routers, and multifunctional firewalls.

With its high integration density, the TQM8360 enables any applications to be implemented very quickly simply by adding the required interface components to a cus-tomer-specific base board. Transferring complexity, such as, e.g., DDR2 memory to the TQM8360 allows the design of the base board to be simplified significantly, thereby achieving a cost-optimized total solution. Further savings are also possible utilizing options for adding components such as more memory.

In addition to the 1260 MIPS provided by the 32-bit CPU, the application software is also supported by two inte-grated communications coprocessors (QUICC Engine up to 500 MHz) and a security engine (AES, 3DES, RSA, SHA, MD5, HMAC, RNG). The result is that overall per-formance is significantly higher than with typical CPUs.

Measuring 77x75mm, the TQM8360 handles power and reset management for all components of the module, and thus requires only a single power supply (3.3 V). Using compact and robust GHz-capable mezzanine connectors, interfaces such as eight Fast-Ethernet, two gigabit Ethernet, two Multi PHY UTOPIA/POS interfaces, or eight TDM buses can be implemented. In addition to these interfaces the module offers a double set of SPI, UART and I2C interfaces, as well as a USB interface. Peripherals are connected to the TQM8360 through the 32-bit PCI interface or the CPU’s local bus.

The individual AMC platform hardware components are widely available from a combination of Freescale and Freescale Alliance Partners, and the software is available under license to OEMs.

AdvancedMC Hardware Platform DetailsThe broadband wireless baseband processing reference hardware is based on multiple modular PICMG-defined AMC modules plugged into a compact MicroTCA™ chassis. The ability to use AMC modules directly, without the need for either an AdvancedTCA® or a custom carrier, enables substantial reductions in size, cost and power. The modular approach also enables individual components of the system to be upgraded, or even cost reduced, as newer hardware becomes available over time. This accelerates developer timelines and streamlines support.

The baseline platform focuses on the Baseband Layer 1 and Layer 2 processing, but the same system can be extended by adding control, network interface and FPGA cards to provide a WiMAX/LTE “Base Station-in-a-Box” solution.

J-ScanCompatible Operating Systems: Windows

Supported Power Architectures™ (including PowerPC): All that support JTAG

J-SCAN unobtrusively displays activity on every scan-enabled pin on every device in a JTAG scan chain in real time on your PC/Laptop display.

You can now “see” what the pins under a BGA (or any other package) are doing in real time. You can answer the questions: “Is the oscillator connected to pin C13?” “Is the Address bus active?” “Are my chip enables High, Low, or toggling?” “Do I have continuity to the circuit under that BGA?”, and you can answer them without using traditional test equipment or touching the board with a probe that might damage the board or short adja-cent pins.

You can monitor the pin activity without affecting the circuit’s performance. J-Scan is completely unobtrusive. The circuit can be running at full speed and it will not know you are monitoring every JTAG-enabled pin on the device.

J-Scan also allows you to temporarily break the connec-tion between the internal logic and the pins so you can manually control every JTAG-enabled pin on the device. You can manually force a pin high or low to see if it is connected to another pin on the circuit card. You can also isolate the internal logic from the rest of your board and test it without being influenced by the circuitry around it, allowing verification that a device got programmed cor-rectly independent of the surrounding circuitry.

J-Scan doesn’t require parts libraries. Simply download the part’s BSDL file from the manufacturer’s web site and J-Scan builds a custom virtual part for you on the fly.

◆ Full system simulation that is scalable: from a single CPU, to a multi-core SoC, to a complete board, to a network of computer systems. This provides the ability to debug at a complete system level instead of a single CPU level.

◆ Unique debugging features such as reverse execution, saving/restoring complete system state, deterministic execution, network aware, ability to break on memory access, I/O, text output, and graphics output.

◆ Tracing, logging, and profiling capability to help tune performance of an application including cache analy-sis, instruction tracing, performance/synchronization control.

◆ Users can customize models to match their specific target hardware and evolve the model as the physical hardware design evolves.
