Francis Baker Sales Consultant, GreeceMacmillan Education
Welcome to the Macmillan education eLT 2013 catalogueYou’ve all been wondering about Macmillan in Greece and rightly so. We announced a winding down of the Macmillan Hellas operation a couple of years ago and now many of you are asking, “What, are they back?”
Yes, we are – back and raring to go. How could we not be present in Greece when we’ve been here for so many years, with all of you remembering us so positively?
From 1994 to 2005 I was in charge of the Macmillan operation here, working hard to build it up with memorable titles, continually striving to provide you with excellent service, supported by a great team. Now I’m thrilled to pick up the reins again.
We have very exciting new titles for 2013: the highlights are Laser by Malcolm Mann and Steve Taylore-Knowles (now in its third series, with many new features as well as two extra levels), Captain Jack, a new pre-Junior course with IWB, a revised Profi ciency Testbuilder and the new short course, Direct to IELTS (target bands 6-7).
Our aim in being back in Greece is to support you, the school owners, to be more successful and stay at the cutting edge of your businesses, and you, the teachers, to face the challenges of your working day with a little more ease and satisfaction.
Browse through this catalogue and call us on our Macmillan Hotline for Greece 210-3641311 for sample copies and/or to request a visit. Check out our Greece page at www.macmillanenglish.com for all our news and local events. 3 Read the article again and decide if the statements are true (T), or false (F).
1 Scientists are certain that 2002 NT7 T/F will not hit the Earth in 2019.
2 The Earth will next be in danger T/F 2.2 years after February 2019.
3 Scientists will use nuclear weapons T/F to destroy dangerous asteroids.
4 We will probably try to change the T/F position of a dangerous asteroid.
5 We know for sure that a meteor T/F killed all the dinosaurs.

Have your say!Which of these statements do you agree with? Say why.●● I’m not worried about an asteroid hitting the
Earth. It’s never going to happen!●● I’m worried about an asteroid hitting the Earth.
It could happen any day!
The Space Race
1 Is a huge asteroid going to hit the
Earth in February 2019? Probably not,
according to scientists, but it’s going
to be close. The asteroid, called
2002 NT7, was discovered in July 2002.
Since then, astronomers have been
working hard to calculate its exact
path. They are now fairly confident
that it will just miss the Earth in 2019.
2But will it ever collide with Earth in
the future? Scientists are not sure. The
next possible collision date is February
2060 and, as the asteroid orbits the
Sun every 2.2 years, it’s quite likely
that it will hit us at some point in the
future. If it does, it will almost certainly
destroy an area the size of Europe and
cause global climate changes.
3But before you start panicking, we’ll
have plenty of time to prepare for
the collision and prevent it from
happening. Unlike in the movies,
though, this probably won’t be
done by destroying it with nuclear
weapons. There will be two simpler
options. The first will involve landing
a small rocket on the asteroid and
‘driving’ it slightly off course so it
misses the Earth. The second option
will be to use a ‘solar sail’, which is a
bit like the sail on a ship, to change
the asteroid’s course.
4Meteors (asteroids which enter
the Earth’s atmosphere) have hit
the Earth before and caused huge
damage. Indeed it’s possible that
a meteor was responsible for
the dinosaurs becoming extinct.
These days, however, we have the
technology to detect them in time
and to take appropriate action. Next
time it happens, we’ll be ready for it.

Uncovering CLILContent and Language Integrated Learning in Bilingual and Multilingual Education
Uncovering CLIL is a practical and informative handbook which will be of use to teachers of all levels of experience. It examines language and content teaching, and reveals how the two can go hand in hand, giving examples of how to use CLIL at primary, secondary and vocational levels. Packed with practical ideas and suggestions, it is the essential companion for CLIL teachers.
• Acts as an ideal guide for teachers getting started in CLIL, and existing practitioners in search of new ideas.
• Presents a broad overview of CLIL essentials for teachers at both primary and secondary levels.
• Contains a wide range of practical ideas and activities that work in the CLIL classroom.
Peeter Mehisto is an author, trainer, manager and educator and has extensive experience working with teachers to support the implementation of best practice of CLIL methodology. He is a frequent presenter and facilitator at CLIL events.
David Marsh was part of the team that conducted groundwork leading to the launch of the term CLIL in 1994. He has extensive experience of capacity-building for CLIL in a range of countries and designing teacher development programmes.
María Jesús Frigols has coordinated CLIL implementation in secondary and vocational education in Valencia. She is also a consultant to the Boards of Education of several regions in Spain and is the author of a number of ESP didactic guides.
