Day 2

Into the Past | 8 hour tour led by one of our specialist guides | One of the main fascinations of Lima is the concentration of ancient history in the area; not only do the origins of the city pre-date the Spanish foundation of the city by several millennia, its museums are full of the artistic treasures of magnificent pre-Columbian civilizations that flourished throughout the coastal deserts of Peru. Begin to unravel this multifaceted history and discover the complex past of this fascinating city with a visit to an ancient adobe pyramid right in the middle of the city. Huaca Huallamarca, which dates back to around 200 BC, served a variety of functions, including a religious temple and a cemetery, for the populations that inhabited the area. Next, journey to the Larco Herrera Museum, where your knowledgeable and friendly guide will turn thousands of years of complex ancient history into an easy-to-understand story for kids and adults alike. Through the museum’s innovative approach, you will become enthralled with the variety of animals, deities and figures represented in pre-Columbian ceramics as well as the vibrant and vivid designs, allowing your curiosity to run wild. As you move further into the museum, you will begin to notice a subtle change in the design and themes in the artifacts themselves, displaying the influence of the Spanish conquest on the natives in the region. This influence is visible beyond the native artifacts; as the previous capital of the Spanish Viceroyalty in Peru, Lima maintains many remnants of its past supremacy, revealed in its civil and religious buildings, which still stand and are well preserved. Continue your journey to the colonial area of Lima featuring the Cathedral (closed on Sundays), the Convent of Santo Domingo, and the Main Square with its beautiful neo-colonial style buildings. You will also have a chance to visit Casa Aliaga, reportedly the oldest home on the Continent and still family-owned after 17 generations. It was first deeded to Jerónimo de Aliaga after he became one of the 13 men who stayed with Francisco Pizarro during his grueling exploration of Peru’s coast in 1527. Today, the house is in superb condition, exemplifying life in the period of the Viceroyalty. Marvel at the series of salons representing décor during the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. Explore the courtyard and chapel where the walls used to be covered in silver sheets prior to the ‘sacking’ of 1826 before transferring back to your Lima hotel. * The above sequence of visits is a suggested tour. Depending on your interests, within the specified time of 8 hours, this program can be reorganized to feature the following sites: La Casona de San Marcos; the Convent of San Francisco and its catacombs; Huaca Pucllana; and the Museo de la Inquisition. It is also possible to organize cocktails at Casa Aliaga, upon request and at an extra cost.

Day 3 Transfer Hotel to Airport for Domestic Flight | An Aracari representative will meet you in the lobby of your hotel, 2 1/2 hours before your flight departure, in order to assist you with checkout, and then escort you to the airport for your flight to Cusco. After you have checked in your luggage, he will accompany you until you pass through to the departure area. Today, you will be met by your expert guide at the Cusco airport and be escorted by private vehicle to Pisac, one of the most important Inca sites in the Urubamba Valley.

Awanacancha Visit | Along the way to Pisac, stop for a short visit of Awanacancha, where you will have the opportunity to see the different camelids that live in the Andes such as llamas, alpacas, vicuñas and guanacos. Alpacas have thick wool commonly used for textiles while the vicuñas are smaller and have delicate fur that is considered the finest in the world.

Guided Visit of Pisac Market and Ruins | Following your visit to Awanacancha continue on to Pisac where you will experience the sights and sounds of the town’s famous market, with a variety of handcrafts and fresh produce. Afterwards, continue on to the Pisac ruins. With Inca masonry of superlative quality, the stunning terracing following the contours of the mountain and superior view of the valley will leave you in awe. Explore at your own pace in this marvelous setting.

You will be given a multi-use entrance ticket known as 'BTC'. This includes access to multiple sites in Cusco and surrounding areas that you will visit.

2 Nights at Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba | Set in the Sacred Valley, colonial-inspired Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba is comprised of a hacienda-style building with 12 rooms constructed around a central courtyard, along with an additional collection of stand-alone Casitas boasting views out over the valley. With floor to ceiling windows, the construction of this luxury hotel may be contemporary, but its architecture and interiors draw on the area’s cultural history, combining local custom-made furniture with pre-Colombian textiles. The spacious property is surrounded by the impressive towering mountains of the Sacred Valley and even includes its own farm from where the ingredients of many of the hacienda’s delectable dishes are sourced. Check-In time: 13:00 hrs. / Check-Out: 11:00 hrs. Urubamba Superior Deluxe Includes: Buffet Breakfast

Day 4

Guided Visit to Ollantaytambo Town & Fortress | Today visit the fabulous town of Ollantaytambo and its ruins. The town is unique in that it still preserves its original Inca plan, with people living in traditional cancha enclosures once occupied by the Inca elite. The archaeological compound found here is a remarkable spectacle, and a site of great historical significance. It was here that one of the greatest battles of the Conquest was fought, and one of the few where the Incas defeated the Spaniards.

Lunch at Huayoccari | Your private transfer will bring you to the delightful world of a traditional hacienda in the Sacred Valley, owned and operated by the prestigious Lambarri family. Hacienda Huayoccari offers guests an elegant way to experience the rich history of the Cusco region. Begin your visit with a private tour of Huayoccari’s on-site gallery as you’re lead through the homestead’s impeccable exhibits of pre-Columbian ceramics, Inca pottery and fine Colonial artwork. Following the tour, enjoy a delicious three-course meal in an elegant wood-paneled dining room with stunning views of the Urubamba Valley below. Lunch consists of typical Peruvian dishes made with fresh ingredients sourced from the valley and from the grounds of Hacienda Huayoccari. Following lunch, you will be transferred to your next destination.

Guided Visit to Maras & Moray | Today, you will visit Maras, the site of the remarkable and unusual Salinas, located in the heart of the Sacred Valley and not far from Urubamba. This site consists of a huge number of watered terraces that collect salt by evaporation from the saline waters that gush from an underground stream. Built in a similar way to agricultural terraces seen throughout the Andes, the Salinas have been in use since pre-Columbian times. Visually, the shining, salt-encrusted terraces are extraordinary. Nearby Maras lie the most enigmatic Inca terraces at the site of Moray. This unique site, probably used for agricultural experimentation, consists of several enormous terraced circular depressions. Following your visit, enjoy lunch (at own cost) before transferring back to your hotel. Overnight at Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba

Day 5

Transfer from Urubamba Valley to Poroy train station | Today, you will be collected from your hotel and driven by private vehicle approximately 1 hour to the train station in Poroy to begin your journey to Machu Picchu.

Two Days at Machu Picchu | Two day tour accompanied by expert guide | “Magnificence” is the only word to describe the scene, as you gaze upon the ruins of Machu Picchu. The main destination on many travellers’ lists, the ‘lost city of the Incas’ is a man-made marvel that has become a symbol for the ingenuity and prosperity of one of the most expansive empires in Latin American history. Only a century ago were the incredible ruins uncovered; a two year-excavation led by Yale archaeologist Hiram Bingham and the National Geographic Society of Washington DC allowed Machu Picchu to gain the prominence that it deserves. Its fascination is due in part to its position, high on a mountain ridge and 2,430m/7,972ft above sea level. Believed to be an Inca settlement built to control the economies of neighboring communities, it

In and Around Cusco | 4-hour tour accompanied by one of our expert guides | Cusco (3,400m/11,155ft) is without a doubt the most beautiful town in Peru and arguably in South America. After being transported from your hotel, begin your visit in the Plaza de Armas in the city center. Make your way around the city as you are filled in with all of the enriching history and important moments that took place in the streets and buildings before you. Visit the renaissance-style Cathedral, certainly one of the most imposing structures in the city, and admire the exquisite stonework of Koricancha, or the Inca “Sun Temple.” You’ll also get to walk around the bustling, open-air San Pedro market, where you will be mesmerized by the variety of

Museo Cao is just a short walking distance from the actual site and contains a variety of captivating artifacts including collections of pottery, textiles, and golden regalia, along with the bones of Moche royalty and human sacrifices. The area is said to possess spiritual powers which local Shaman tap into when performing rituals. Please be aware that this is a suggested itinerary and is subject to availability.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please be advised that travel in Peru and Bolivia, and South America in general, is occasionally subject to disruptions due to circumstances beyond ARACARI’s control. These disruptions may affect your trip and may result in delays and changes of plans. These include but are not limited to: adverse weather conditions, unannounced schedule changes in museums and other attractions’ opening times, flight cancellations and delays etc. (Please refer to our booking conditions under “force majeure”). Likewise, infrastructure is still limited in places so water and power shortages might occur as well as substandard service even in the best hotels. Therefore, to enhance the enjoyment of your holiday, we STRONGLY ADVISE you to be understanding and patient, as nobody can or will be held responsible for changes to your itinerary as a result of the aforementioned. ARACARI is there to mitigate the hassle and rearrange activities wherever possible to suit your needs, but sometimes the circumstances are beyond our control. The upside is the privilege of visiting a largely unspoiled country and region, with a rich culture and delightful population.
