Machu Picchu is in Peru, South America. It is an old Inca city. It is in the Andes Mountains.
In 1911 Hiram Bingham rediscovered it. Machu Picchu is built on terraces and there are hundreds of stairs and paths. The houses are built from big pieces of granite.
Some people think the royal family lived in Machu Picchu because there are some houses for farmers and servants of the royal family.
When the Spanish “conquistadors” came to Peru, they didn´t find Machu Picchu because it was in the mountains and it is very difficult to reach.
Today, the lost city of Machu Picchu is a world famous tourist attraction.
