Family business ‘Horsleys of Abbeytown Ltd’ took delivery of their new 4m Horsch Pronto drill in July to replace their aging Rapid drill. The new drill has already completed a number of acres of drilling of stubble turnips and grass seed prior to starting drilling grain later in the summer. The Pronto drill is configured with 2 sets of cultivation discs, followed by paddles, packer tyres and then the turbo disc seeding unit with double disc coulters, packer wheel and following harrow. This configuration means the cultivation discs can be simply lifted out to allow the seeding unit to direct drill grass seeds and stubble turnips into the ground. Success rates and seed establishment is very good using the drill this way, working speeds of around 15kph mean the acres are covered fast and a quality job is done quickly to catch the right weather conditions.

Steven Horsley explains that the Horsch drill seems easier pulled than his previous drill and he feels will travel better and longer when conditions aren’t perfect. The Horsch design means lighter base weight of the drill with out compromising on strength or quality. Steven says the Horsch Pronto was a natural progression as their next drill, following on from many years of direct drilling starting in 1973.

The Pronto is also fitted with a separate fertiliser hopper and second metering unit to allow fertiliser to be drilled directly with the grain to give the seed a better start. This method isn’t something new as it we had many Massey Ferguson 30 drills in Cumbria with fertiliser application on around 35 years ago, however as combi drills became the normal method of seeding in our area, fertiliser application with the grain wasn’t really developed in a combi drill. Horsch now offer fertiliser application with both the Pronto range of drills and the Express range of combi drills. Carr’s Billington demonstrated both styles of these drills in Spring with fertiliser application and the results have shown the crops have come through very well and with plenty of vigour. The application of fertiliser in Spring drilling cuts out an extra operation and allows drilling to take place at the right time and as quickly as possible.

Direct drilling into stubble and grassland is something that Horsleys of Abbeytown are very established at and something that is in as much demand as ever with the change in farming policies. With changes with SFP and rules regarding carbon footprints, non inversion drilling keeps carbon in the soil and improves soil health. The use of this type of drilling means cheaper establishment of crops, less fuel use and ultimately can be better for the land. Steven explains to us that 1” of rainfall can equal 100t/acre of weight on the surface of the land, this leading to greater and greater compaction of the soil, the principles of direct drilling all aid good soil management and health, which are imperative to seed establishment and gaining maximum yields.

Horsleys of Abbeytown Ltd are a family business, run by John, Kevin, Steven and Andrew, established in 1960 they carry out a huge range of contracting operations primarily across the Solway plain in North East Cumbria. Operations are roughly equally split between grassland and arable duties. Horsleys have dealt with Carr’s Billington’s Carlisle team for a number of years, praising the sales and aftersales department for great backup and a great working relationship.
