What do you do regularly that contributes most significantly to your overall wellness? I exercise four to five times a week, combining strength and cardio. And what might be even more important, I try to make healthy choices in what I eat. How or why did you start with it? My life was very active when I lived overseas and I struggled a bit after I moved here. About 3 years ago, I decided it was time to do more and wanted to see what else I could do since running was not an option at the time due to an injury. I started attending classes in the fitness studio and that was it. I was hooked. What are the greatest gains you’ve made from doing this? Becoming fit, finding out there are no limits, and feeling fantastic! Meeting great people along the journey. It is great for your body, but just as important for your mind. What wisdom would you like to share with someone thinking about doing it? Be active. Try different things and find what you like. You need to have fun and enjoy whatever you are doing. Whatever you do, do it right. You are not doing it for anybody else, it is all about you! And always challenge yourself!

ChrisSport and Wellness Member

What do you do regularly that contributes most significantly to your overall wellness? In 2009 I had a career ending neck injury that took me out of playing every contact sport I enjoyed. In 2010, I began working out with Personal Trainer James Linthorne. Since making that decision, James and I have been working out 3 times a week and he always ensures he is cognizant of my injury and finds creative ways to motivate me and push me during my workouts. How or why did you start with it? Being in sports my entire life, then having a career ending injury was extremely difficult for me. I wanted to stay active and have someone motivate me throughout my work week. What’s your favorite memory of this journey? I have been lucky enough to build a great friendship with James Linthorne who I count on every week and he ensures that I have a healthy and clear minded life. What wisdom would you like to share with someone thinking about doing it? If you need the extra push in life like I did, and need someone to keep yourself motivated and healthy, take that first step and sign up. These trainers are absolute professionals in all matters in life and you might just gain a lifelong friend like I did.

How or why did you start focusing on your health and wellness? I started to do a lot of cardio 3 to 4 times a week. The reason I wanted to lose weight in the first place is because my knees and my feet were always hurting. I ended up damaging my left knee because of the weight I was at. Before I started this weight-loss journey I weighed 303 lbs and today I weigh 184, down 119 lbs! What’s been your greatest challenge with it along the way? My biggest challenge was to do the exercises and stick with it. I used to hate exercising because I would always breathe heavy. Now I enjoy it. It became my routine. You can’t lose weight with-out exercising, that’s how I see it now. What’s your favourite memory of this journey? My favorite memory is seeing success. For example my waist at the start was 48 inches and now I’m at a 35 inch waist. I now fit a size 12 and it feels great! What wisdom would you like to share with someone thinking about doing it? Keep your mind and spirit focused. Share what you have accomplished and never lose your beautiful self.

Especially for children aged 4 months to 3 years and their parents. Based on the principle “Within Arms Reach”, these classes focus on close playful interaction and shared fun between child, parent and water.

These preschoolers learn to get in and out of the water safely. They’ll learn to move safely in shallow water and use a lifejacket to be comfortable with their floats and glides.

These beginning swimmers will work on safe entries, exits and moving through the water. When ready they’ll do floats, glides and kicking on their front and back without assistance. They’ll even explore jumping into deep water and treading water with their lifejackets on.

These youngsters will explore the water learning to submerge and exhale underwater. Buoyant aids are used to help them discover rollovers, glides and flutter kicks.

These children will be able to jump or side-roll into deep water, tread water and swim (10-15 m) using either front crawl or back crawl. They’ll try ‘vertical’ whip kick and begin to work on their endurance level by stepping into the world of fitness interval training.

These capable preschoolers will strengthen their flutter kicks and try swimming front crawl. They’ll start to learn how to support themselves in deep water and in the end they’ll do solo jumps and side rolls into deep water. Their lifejacket will support them while they learn to tread water and swim to safety (5-10 m) in the deep end.

These preschoolers will master their floats, glides and short swims on their front and back (2-3 m). They’ll be able to pick up objects from waist deep water and use their lifejackets to jump and roll into the deep end.

These preschoolers will master their floats, glides and short swims on their front and back (2-3 m). They’ll be able to pick up objects from waist deep water and use their lifejackets to jump and roll into the deep end.

The Swim for Life Preschool Program gives children a head start on learning to swim, teaching them the basics to be safe and confident little swimmers. Water Smart® education is part of every Preschool level.

Swimmer levels make sure your child learns how to swim before they get in too deep. Each level challenges school aged children 5 years and older to develop safe entries, deep water support, underwater skills and swimming strokes. Kids learn everlasting healthy habits by getting and staying fit.

Swimmer 3These swimmers will dive and do forward rolls into deep water. Watch them learn handstands and front somersaults underwater. They’ll work on their front crawl, back crawl and whip kick over short distances and add some interval fitness training to their practice. By the end they’ll be able to meet the Swim to Survive standard: Roll into deep water, tread water (1 min) and swim (50 m).

Level 7: Rookie Patrol

Level 8: Ranger Patrol

Level 9: Star Patrol

Canadian Swim Patrol: Rookie Patrol develops fitness levels to meet a timed 100 m swim and 350 m workout. Water proficiency skills include: swims with clothes, ready position and foot first and head first surface dives. Demonstrating an ability to conduct a primary assessment and initiating EMS are included as first aid skills. Victim recognition and throwing assists are other key elements of the program.

Canadian Swim Patrol: Ranger Patrol enhances capability in the water, including stride entry, underwater forward and backward somersaults, lifesaving eggbeater kick and increased fitness levels to meet a 200 m timed swim. Rescue skills involve an increased skill level in ABC first aid basics, victim recognition and non-contact rescues.

Canadian Swim Patrol: Star Patrol demands good physical conditioning and lifesaving judgment. Participants develop lifesaving and first aid skills; further refine front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke over 100 m each; and complete 600 m workouts and 300 m timed swims.

Swimmer 4

Swimmer 6

Swimmer 5

These swimmers will swim further with their front crawl and back crawl. They’ll be introduced to breaststroke arm drills, underwater swims and front crawl sprints. Interval training will add to their fitness level.

These swimmers will master eggbeater and scissor kicks, front crawl, breaststroke and back crawl. With the interval training and sprint racing drills they’ll be ready to make the 300 m endurance workout. And, just for fun, they’ll try stride jumps and compact jumps. Next step: on to the Canadian Swim Patrol program.

These swimmers will try eggbeater kick, head up front crawl and shallow dives. And just for fun try ‘tuck’ jumps and underwater back somersaults. They’ll easily go the distance with a strong front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke.

Bronze Medallion/Bronze Cross

Su82675 Jan 25–Mar 22*3–6 p.m.

By taking the Bronze Medallion Award, you will develop an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water rescue education: judgment, knowledge, skill and fitness. Rescuers learn tows, carries and defense and release methods for challenging rescues. Lifesavers develop stroke efficiency and endurance in a timed swim. Bronze Cross is designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training, including safe supervision in aquatic facilities. It is the prerequisite for all advanced training programs including National Lifeguard and Instructor certification. This course includes CPR C certification. Prerequisites: Bronze Star or 13 years old.
