Castiglioncello is the place that

mostly enriched the macchiaioli

painters’ creativity.

The discovery of the place

happened thanks to the art critic

Diego Martelli who, in 1861,

inherited a vast piece of land

around Castigioncello on a hilltop

which overlooks the cliff.

Here he started to invite a lot of friends frequent

visitors at Michelangelo’s cafe in Florence and

where The Macchiaioli usually met. So Diego

became the cultural reference point of the

moviment and the founder of Castiglioncello

School.

At the time Castiglioncello was a tiny village of

fishermen and farmers, as evidenced in the

numerous paintings of the movement and here he

decided to live with his friend Giuseppe Abbati.

Diego's hospitality allowed

Castiglioncello to become

home of a vibrant arts center,

the revelation of a scenario

of pure beauty: the fashion of

the resort to the beach was not

very widespread and very few

buildings altered the nature of

the coast.

The macchiaioli concurred depending on their own temperament, to make that figurative experience

decisive to start their new research. The works performed in Castiglioncello, with wise splashes of

color, accentuate the beauty of the place by the sea.

As reflected in the pictures of great harmony and balance, and suffused with mystery painted by

Abbati, or the Sernesi’s clear and solemn visions , or the clear brightness of Borrani’s landscapes, and

Fattori‘s force of composition.

During the summers 1864 and 1865 Abbati had given life, with Sernesi and Borrani, to a real artistic

collaboration which resulted in works of the highest quality, such as Marina di Castiglioncello by

Raphael Sernesi and a refined series of paintings very familiar to Borrani and Abbati, as” Orto a

Castiglioncello” by Borrani and “Carro rosso con bovi” by Abbati.

In 1867 Giovanni Fattori went to Castiglioncello.

Here he created one of the most famous paintings of his stay which testifies his friendship with

Diego Martelli, is the small portrait of Diego sitting in the shade of the trees.

Away from the town, Castiglioncello, the sky, the sea, the rural

world, suggested these admirable artists other splendid works such

as "Buoi sulla spiaggia"," Lido con Bovi al pascolo", "Veduta di

Castiglioncello "by Abbati; "Pagliai a Castiglioncello", "Scogli e

cespugli a Castiglioncello", "La punta del Romito" by Sernesi,

"Raccolta del grano a Castiglioncello"

( "Oxen on the beach", "Lido with grazing oxen"," View of

Castiglioncello"by Abbati, "Piles of straw in Castiglioncello",

"rocks and bushes in Castiglioncello", The top of Romito" by

Sernesi, harvest wheat in Castiglioncello.
