MACARTHUR NEWS
The next General Meeting of the Macarthur Advancement & Development Association Inc.
Wednesday 8th Octomber at 7.30 pm at the Senior Citizens Rooms
News from MADA
At the recent MADA AGM the following people were elected to lead the Association. John Bragg is President, Pieter Badenhorst Vice President. Merilyn Cook is Secretary and Peter Cook is Treasurer. Membership is open to all members of the
community and we would residents of Macarthur,
old and new, to attend our meetings to observe what
we are involved in and consider being part of
MADA. Meetings are held at 7.30pm on the second
Wednesday of the month at the Senior Citizens Club.
Recently we have been doing some drainage work at the Rec Reserve in an area that is used by motor homes, caravans and campers stay a night or two. We would like to thank David Parfrey, who dug the ditch for the drain at the entrance to the rest area, and Peter Nield who back-filled and spread the scoria.
Proposed New Macarthur Signs
Last month we asked for your input into the
design for new signs for Macarthur and asked for
designs to be submitted for consideration.
Thank you to Jose for his contribution (below).
We would love to have more to publish next
month so please get to work and put your ideas
on paper.
This sign is designed to be constructed from laser
cut metal. We apologise that we are not able to
reproduce it in colour.

The Fracking Debate
Many may not know, but Macarthur and Bessibelle currently lie under exploration licenses for Shale and Tight gas, two kind of unconventional gas that require the controversial practice of fracking for extraction. Early stage exploration is already underway in the South West, in the form of seismic surveys and other low level exploration. Meanwhile, over the border at Penola, wells have been sunk to a depth of 4km and companies have found what they believe to be commer-cial quantities of gas.
At an information night held in Macarthur last week grave concerns were expressed about the potential consequences of unconventional gas mining. These include possible under-ground and surface water contamination, large scale industri-alization of farmland and human and animal health impacts.
A Victorian moratorium on the industry is due to be lifted in July next year. Given that the deadline of the moratorium is approaching, it is important that communities get informed on the issue now and begin the conversation about whether or not they want the industry here. A group of Macarthur and Besibelle residents will be coming around to homes over the next few weeks to give information about the industry and survey landholders on their views, asking if they want to declare Macarthur, Bessibelle and surrounds 'Gasfield Free'. They are encouraging people to do their own research prior to answering survey questions; to become better informed on the issue and know their rights as landholders to refuse to negotiate with mining companies if they choose to do so.
Communities around the country have been conducting similar surveys. Here in the South West, Digby, Byaduk, Woolsthorpe, Drumborg, Dartmoor and Hotspur have all completed surveys, and many more are currently undergoing them. So far over 95% of people in those communities have declared they want their towns and lands to remain 'gasfield free.' While not legally binding, the declarations have proved effective across Australia at discouraging unconven-tional gas mining companies from imposing themselves on communities where they are not wanted.
To help with the survey or for more information, contact Pat Purcell on 0413 655 253 or myself (Chloe Aldenhoven) on 0432 328 107

News from Mt Eccles
The two fire season employees will com-mence at Mount Eccles in early October. This is a few weeks earlier than previous years and it would seem that they will be utilised to go burning wherever there are opportunities for burns, virtually anywhere in Victoria. As I have mentioned previously DEPI are very keen to get as much burning as possible undertaken before it gets too hot and dry. When the fire seasons lads at Eccles are not involved in burning they will be very busy at Mt Eccles and Mount Napier preparing the areas for what could be a busy and threatening fire season. I want to get the all the tracks well cleared and cut back as much as possible so that we can send crews in to initiate an aggressive first attack on a fire if it’s safe to do so. There is also lots of general maintenance works to be done around the park and weeds to spray at this time of the year.
Parks has been getting some press lately about the increase in camping fees; all I can do about this is do my best to improve the facilities here at Mt Eccles for campers. I have engaged the local plumbers to re-tile the shower bases and uncle Doug has put some gravel on the access track into the campground, some campfires have been upgraded and moved and we will step up the maintenance and cleaning as best we can.
I would like to thank some adjoining landowners at Mount Napier who caught and returned a couple of misbehaving radio tracker goats I had released at Mt Napier. The goats thought they would like to make friends with sheep and ended up at Lloyd Mirtschins and Steve Millards properties. Many thanks to them for catching them and returning them to me. They have been re-released in other sections of Mount Napier and hopefully this time will make friends with goats.

Farewell and Good Luck!
For 22 years Nicole Bigham has been the public face
of the Moyne Shire in their Macarthur office. Sadly
Nicole has moved on to new adventures and will be
sadly missed by the residents of Macarthur. Her cheery
smile and friendly nature have been her trademark.
Nicole has also had a long association with the Foot-
ball/Netball Club both as a player and also a committee
member. When the Shire took over the printing of this
paper it was initially Nicole’s job to run it off for us, a
job made harder because the printer was ageing and
tended to have hiccups. Nicole always did the job she
was asked to do with good grace no matter what went
wrong and Carole Dunn and I would like to thank her on
behalf of MADA. We wish her well on your behalf and
hope we see her around town when she comes to visit.
