MACARTHUR NEWS
The next Annual General Meeting of the Macarthur Advancement & Development Association Inc.
Wednesday 11th September at 7.30 pm at the Macarthur Hotel Macarthur
Join MADA – help keep your community
strong
When MADA was first established it was a support
group for local businesses and its’ purpose was to help
grow the town and keep it economically viable for busi-
nesses to operate here. Since those early beginnings the
organization has grown to cover all aspects of town life
and is now recognized by Council and others as the voice
of the community. We cannot be truly representative of
the whole community unless we have a broad representa-
tion of the community in our membership.
Moyne Shire has an officer employed to help their
towns. Craig Midgley has access to information about
current grants, liaises with town organizations and Coun-
cils, provides information to us about what is happening
in the Shire and is generally helpful in all aspects of the
business of our organization. From Craig and other
sources we are currently hearing that grants from govern-
ments departments and philanthropic organizations are
being regarded more sympathetically if they are sup-
ported by or lodged jointly with town organizations.
At our AGM we will be moving a motion to set a spe-
cial membership for clubs, businesses and other organi-
zations in Macarthur. The fee will probably be $25 a
year and will enable all of these groups to nominate
someone to attend our meetings (not necessarily the
same person each time) who will then be able to
vote on behalf of the group they represent. (More
than one person from that group will be able to at-
tend the meetings but only one will be able to vote).
Having representation from businesses, clubs and
organizations means we can be kept informed about
the various projects each of them are undertaking,
use Craig to source funding and be in a position to
either support applications for grants or be joint ap-
plicants with them to strengthen the applications.
Our AGM is being held on September 11th, we
would love to have representatives of all clubs and
other groups present at that meeting. Our guest
speaker will be Barrie Baker, Chairman of the South
West Community Foundation which is a philan-
thropic organization. Barrie will be talking about
their work, what funding they have available and the
type of projects they fund. An opportunity will be
given to ask Barrie questions and also talk to him
over a cup of coffee after the meeting. We need to
work together to maintain and improve the many
wonderful facilities available to us in Macarthur.
Macarthur Advancement &
Development Association Inc
Notice is hereby given that the MADA AGM will be held on
Wednesday September 11th at 7.30pm in the Blue Room,
Macarthur Hotel. The guest speaker will be Mr Barrie Baker,
chairman of the South West Community Foundation. Supper
will be served at the close of the meeting.
For catering purposes please contact Merilyn Cook (55761113)
if you plan to attend.
All community members welcome Pieter Badenhorst receiving his Citizenship Certificate
from Councillor Jim Doukas, Mayor of Moyne Shire.

Chinese Visitors to Local Families
On the 28th July, 2013 the Drendel and Milgate families
arrived at Hawkesdale P12 School to collect their allo-
cated Chinese student. Eight Students from Beijing ar-
rived at the school to experience Australian life in the
country for a week.
Andrea and Peter Drendel had Chan Chan and Leonie
Dyson and Lynton Milgate had Sylvia! Both families
showed them as much of Aussie life as they could: this
included seeing a Koala, Aussie Barbecue, visited a
dairy, Mt Eccles, feeding a pet lamb, visiting a supermar-
ket and keeping up with everyday life of a typical Aussie
family. We also visited the local footy where they tried
a pie and had sandwiches with sauce!
Below are some memory pictures:
Barbecue at Drendel’s with Kangaroo steaks
Cheezels on the fingers trick!!
After a bit of apprehension at the start, Chan
Chan and Sylvia fitted into our families and
long term friendships were made. We all
enjoyed having them as part of our family. We
also experienced life in Beijing from informa-
tion that was shared with us about their way of
life. There were a few tears shed when they
departed which showed how all the students fit-
ted in and we all enjoyed their company. Both
families have made contact with the girls and
look forward to maybe visiting them next year.

Victorian selection honour for
Temika
Thirteen year old Temika Gay is making waves in
badminton circles and has been selected to repre-
sent Victoria in the 2013 Val Nesbitt Trophy and
Under 15 Nationals Carnival to be held in Sydney
at the end of September. Temika was first se-
lected as an emergency player but within a couple
of days she was notified that she had moved up
and secured a place in the Victorian team. She
will play in the second Victorian team, compet-
ing against other state teams as well as in individ-
ual events. To earn her position in the team
Temika was required to play in a series of selec-
tion tournaments held in Melbourne and Ballarat.
Temika said it was an honour to be selected to
represent her state and was looking forward to the
challenge. “It’s a once in a life time opportunity
and something I have been working towards
since I started playing” she said. Temika has been
playing badminton since she was seven with the
Warrnambool Junior Badminton Association. She
said she loved the sport because it was fun and
kept her active. In the lead up to the carnival
Temika will travel to Melbourne for 3 training
sessions with the team, as well as her regular Fri-
day night squad training and competition with the
Warrnambool Badminton Association.

MACARTHUR & DISTRICT
HISTORICAL Soc. Inc.
Saturday 2nd November will mark 100 years since the
opening of the rebuilt Macarthur Mechanics’ Institute
Hall following the destruction by fire of the original
building, late in 1912. Contemporary reports indicate
that only the piano, some scenery, curtain drapes and
other smaller items were saved from loss.
As the community prepares to celebrate the re-
opening this coming November, ideas to make the
event memorable are beginning to emerge, one of
which is for a display of old photos to be presented in
the Hall for as an interesting backdrop for the planned
festivities.
The Society will therefore be greatly assisted in this
project if members of the community will kindly loan
any pictures of the hall, including interior shots, they
or other family members might have stashed away in
an old shoe box or family album. These days, the
home computer can easily make copies of such treas-
ures, which we could exhibit in the Hall, after which
the originals will be immediately returned to their
owners. If, at the same time, we might also be permit-
ted to make copies for the Society’s own records, that
would also be most appreciated.
Historically then, a number of things are on the move
in Macarthur, including the likely early re-location of
the “Bills” horse trough from its isolated site
near the bridge to a more central location, proba-
bly in the Court House area. Once there, it will
eventually join the original town gas lamp, pres-
ently standing adjacent to the town public toilets.
Another of the Society’s recent successes was
the conclusion of negotiations for purchase of
the artifacts from the original Barbers Shop. It is
planned that they will be relocated into the Court
House and form a recreation of the original shop
with barber’s chair, clippers, razors, bottles of
“Californian Poppy” and “Brylcreme” as well as
old cigarette and tobacco posters and some of
the magazines the blokes and boys used to read
while they waiting for their turn in the chair.
So you can see, members of the Macarthur’s
Historical Society continue to work away, not
always in the public eye, but nevertheless stead-
ily, whilst acquiring and preserving relics of our
past and present for the interest of future genera-
tions. If you want to see the Society at work,
come and join one of our meetings, now held in
the RSL rooms in Heckfield Street. The next
meeting date will be announced in
MACARTHUR NEWS at an early date.

MOUNT ECCLES NEWS
Apart from the Mount Eccles National Park and Mount
Napier State Park I also manage several reserves, one being
the Saint Helens Reserve which is located south of Macar-
thur. St Helens Reserve is a 30 hectare remnant woodland
managed by Parks Victoria from Mount Eccles. Set aside
as a racecourse last century, it remains an example of what
nature can look like if we allow regeneration to occur with-
out broad scale fuel reduction burning taking place on a
regular basis and minimizing disturbance at the site. Land-
holders around the reserve have spoken about how Southern
Brown Bandicoots might still live in the reserve and if they
did how could they be better protected from threat of preda-
tors, fire and loss of links to surrounding remnants like the
Trust for Nature property at Orford (Pallisters Reserve).
The need for proof fell to the community, who then
asked the Basalt to Bay land care group to assist with ob-
taining the proof –as the species had been recorded last in
2003. A grant from the Wettenhall Foundation saw a trap-
ping survey conducted in May 2012. While no bandicoots
were caught, tantalizing signs were noted. With support
from the St Helens Land Care Group and The Friends of
Pallisters Reserve Groups, Basalt to Bay applied to Pacific
Hydro Sustainable Communities Fund to fund the purchase
of four fauna cameras and the re-survey of the reserve using
them. It should be said that without these two streams of
corporate funding the group would not have been able to
resource “looking” for something we “thought” to be there.
With several cameras strategically placed in the reserve it
was not long before the first image of a Southern Brown
Bandicoot was captured and the proof was there for all to
see.
Options to help protect the Bandicoot are now being
worked on; one of these is to work with the St Helens Land
Care Group, to determine support for a 5km fox exclusion
zone –using a contractor baiting program to monitor and
bait over several years. The cameras will be used to monitor
other sites nearby, and to conduct community training
events. Parks Victoria and DSE will endeavour to provide
support for any programs that help with the overall objec-
tive of maintaining and enhancing a healthy ecosystem at
the reserve.
If you would like more information about the reserve or
how to get involved with the reserve or other land care mat-
ters in the area please contact Lisette on 0408712713.

RMIT SURVEY
Help us tell the local story about food
& fibre productivity in South-West
Victoria
A lot has been said about increasing the
production of food and fibre on a re-
gional, state and national level. The Potter
Rural Community Research Network based
at RMIT University in Hamilton and project
partners Glenelg Hopkins Catchment Manage-
ment Authority, Department of Environment
and Primary Industries, National Centre for
Farmer Health, Rural Industries Skills Training
(RIST) and the Southern Grampians Shire are
particularly interested what this means for
our region.
We invite farmers in the South-West to con-
tribute by participating in a survey. The aim is
to gain a better understanding of the inhibi-
tors and opportunities involved in increasing
Agricultural productivity for our region.
This will assist in better regional decision-
making based on what farmers have to say.

PUTTING DOWN ROOTS
Last year we introduced you to Pieter and
Michelle Badenhorst who, having purchased the
vineyard and winery on Mt Eccles Road, were
busy settling into their new home and planning
their wedding. Pieter has just been made an
Australian citizen and Michelle plans to follow
suit when she becomes eligible in a few months
time. Michelle says “We are both thrilled to call
Australia our new home and feel blessed to live
in such a wonderful country.”
Pieter and Michelle’s move into their new home
coincided with the grape harvest and as a result
their first vintage was rather small, only being 25
litres. This year the harvest has been magnificent
with the weather being in their favour and their
second vintage of Pinot Noir, which is now
maturing in oak, has increased to 2000 litres and
should be ready for tasting in a couple of months.
They have spent the last eight weeks or so prun-
ing and expect to be finished before this edition
hits your letter box. Pieter and Michelle also
have a flock of Suffolk sheep.

ROYAL CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL
GOOD FRIDAY APPEAL
MACARTHUR
Firstly, I would like to thank Suzy Millard very much for her wonderful contribution to the Royal Children’s Hospital, Good Friday Appeal. She has been the Macarthur co-ordinator for over 20 years, and prior to that was involved in the Appeal in Hamilton. She has put many many hours into raising funds for a very important cause on behalf of our district.
As many of you will know, Suzy and Gary have moved to Warrnambool, and we wish them all the best with their move. They will be greatly missed in the area for the many activities and organisations they were both involved in.
I am happy to take over as Co-ordinator of the Good Friday Appeal for Macarthur and District, and I am looking forward to your continued sup-port with our new initiatives
Thank you very much for your support.
Kind regards

PONDERING THINGS
Would a fly without wings be called a walk?
If a turtle doesn’t have a shell, is he homeless or naked?
If you try to fail, and succeed, which have you done?
Whose cruel idea was it for the word “Lisp” to have “S”
in it?
If you spin an oriental man in a circle three times does
he become disoriented?
Can an atheist get insurance against acts of God?
How is it possible to have a civil war?

POLICE NEWS
SEPTEMBER 2013
BAD WEATHER
Plenty of it and probably more to come. Drive to the
conditions and just because the speed limit is for exam-
ple 100kph, that is exactly what is says – a speed limit,
not a minimum. Travelling at a slightly slower speed
along a wet road could be the difference between you
making your destination safely or aquaplaning off the
road. It is also extremely important – almost vital, that
you have your cars headlights operating in bad weather.
If you can’t see oncoming cars clearly, then the other
driver probably can’t see you either. Recently, 8 cars
slid off the road near Port Fairy when a freak hail storm
whipped up a huge batch of ice and dumped it on the
road. The ice was gone as quickly as it arrived but it got
8 victims. Many others slid around but not off the road
so be aware.
FOG LIGHTS
Most modern cars are fitted with those smaller brighter
lights just underneath the headlights, commonly referred
to as fog lights. That is exactly their use, in fog or haz-
ardous conditions. It is an offence to have them on in
normal conditions and they should not be used unless
bad weather or light conditions exist. The excuse of ‘I
don’t know where the switch is to turn them off’, won’t
wash as they dazzle oncoming cars. It’s your car, learn
where the switches are before you drive and turn the fog
lights off. Many drivers have been warned about this
and some even fined so its up to you…. $144, your
choice.
Page 10 SEPTEMBER 2013 Macarthur News
GIVING WAY TO EMERGENCY VEHICLES
When an emergency vehicle with lights and sirens
operating approaches you from any direction and
you are driving, you MUST give way to that vehi-
cle and allow it to pass. This doesn’t mean just
slowing down to about 40kph and continuing on
along the road as often there can be blind bends or
other hazards which don’t allow overtaking safely
and we are often stuck behind for quite a distance
without being able to overtake. If that’s the case
then STOP your vehicle and allow the EV to pass.
Many, many times I have been en route to an
emergency situation only to be stuck behind a
vehicle travelling along at about 30kph, thinking
they are helping. They’re not, it’s blocking my
path and sometimes those seconds can be the dif-
ference between life or death. Most drivers do
pull over but lately I am finding some who just
won’t.
GUN SAFES
A great response to my recent article about gun
safes and security. Many people checking and
talking about their firearm storage receptacles. I
have seen some great improvements so far. Don’t
be afraid to ask, I’ll happily have a look for you
and give advice if needed
