The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships at MAC strives to offer all students the best available aid package. However, that process begins with you. The prompt completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each year is the first step you must take in starting the process. We encourage you to complete your form as soon as possible after January 1 and as soon as you have your Federal Income Tax Return filed for the year. All paperwork should be submitted by April 1. May 1 is the deadline for state grant in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

MAC offers a comprehensive program of academic-based scholarships and grants, part-time employment, loans and state/federal assistance. To be considered for financial aid at Mount Aloysius College, you must be sure to complete and submit your Application for Admissions and your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You do not have to be officially accepted to the College in order to submit your FAFSA application. However, we will not process any financial aid until you have been officially accepted and matriculated into a degree program.

In the tradition of a Mercy institution, Mount Aloysius College recognizes the expense of a college education and strives to assist students in the financial aid process so they may receive the maximum financial aid package possible. The Financial Aid Office at Mount Aloysius College abides by the regulations and procedures set forth in the Financial Aid Handbook published by the United States Department of Education, as well as all other publications specifying set regulations. Students are packaged on a first come, first serve basis pending funds availability. Students are packaged without regard to sex, race, religion or

physical challenge. Athletic leadership, ability, participation or performance is not considered when awarding financial aid. It is very important that you submit your FAFSA as early as possible after January 1 of each year. The FAFSA application is FREE to submit and must be submitted annually. You will need your federal tax returns, W-2’s and all information regarding any untaxed income, assets, investments and businesses in order to accurately complete the form. The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships can provide you with a FAFSA Worksheet to complete before you file your form online or you can download one from the FAFSA website. You will file your FAFSA at www.fafsa.gov. Please read the directions carefully. You will be asked to provide the college Title IV code. Mount Aloysius College’s code is 003302. Print a copy of the finished FAFSA for your records before you officially submit the FAFSA online. We also recommend the student and parent (if applicable) request a PIN # first before filing the FAFSA. The PIN # is used to allow the student/parent to sign the application electronically. A PIN # can be requested at

www.pin.ed.gov. Be sure to keep this PIN # as you will be required to use it in future years to electronically sign and access your application.

Approximately two (2) weeks after you file the FAFSA form, you and Mount Aloysius College will be notified. It is to your advantage to review the information you reported to ensure all information is correct. The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships also will review the information and notify you if any further information is needed to complete your file. Students may be selected for a process called “verification.” If you are selected, you will be required to submit certain documents to the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships. These documents must be submitted before we will officially apply any aid to your tuition account, so please submit documents promptly.

Federal aid program eligibility is determined by the information submitted on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Eligibility for some federal aid programs may also be based on funding levels and the time when a student is packaged.

Federal Pell GrantAward amounts are determined by using the results from the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The amount the student is eligible for is directly related to the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) calculated by the federal government. These monies do not have to be repaid upon graduation.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)Award amounts are based on financial need and government funding levels. In order to receive a FSEOG, students must also be awarded a Federal Pell Grant. At Mount Aloysius, award amounts range between $200 and $2,000 per year. This amount may vary from year to year based upon funding levels and student eligibility. These monies do not have to be repaid upon graduation.

Federal Perkins LoanAward amounts are based on financial need and government funding levels. At Mount Aloysius, award amounts range between $200 and $4,000 per year. Students awarded a Perkins Loan are required to complete an entrance interview every year they are awarded the loan and an exit interview upon graduation or withdrawal from the College. Repayment on the loan begins nine (9) months from the date the student ceases to be enrolled on at least a half-time basis. While in repayment, the student will be charged five (5) percent interest on the principal amount of the loan. These monies must be repaid upon graduation.

Nursing LoanAward amounts are based on grade level, financial need and funding levels to full-time, undergraduate students in the Nursing program and range between $200 and $5,200 per year. Students awarded a Nursing Student Loan are required to complete an entrance interview every semester they are awarded a nursing loan and an exit interview upon graduation, withdrawal from the College or the Nursing Program, or upon dropping below six (6) credits. Repayment on the loan begins nine (9) months from the date the student ceases to be enrolled on at least a half-time basis.

While in repayment, the student will be charged five (5) percent interest on the principal amount of the loan. These monies must be repaid.

Federal Work-Study (FWS)Award amounts are based on financial need and government funding levels. Award amounts range between $200 and $1,400 per year. Students select an office/department on-campus where they would like to work, complete the necessary paperwork and obtain the supervisor’s signature. Students are paid minimum wage and are paid bi-weekly for all hours worked.

Federal Community Service Work-StudyIn addition to jobs on-campus, Mount Aloysius College also sponsors several off-campus jobs. The jobs are located in community service-based non-profit organizations. Examples of such positions include local YMCA/ YWCA, America Reads and public libraries. Award amounts are based on financial need and government funding levels. Awards range between $200 and $1,400 per year. Students select an off-campus site where they would like to work, complete necessary paperwork and obtain the supervisor’s signature. Students are paid minimum wage and are paid bi-weekly for all hours worked.

Mount Aloysius College Merit Scholarships and Merit GrantsEach incoming student’s eligibility will be evaluated for a merit scholarship or grant based on high school GPA, SAT scores or college GPA. For more information, contact the Admissions Office. These scholarships and grants have a potential value of $2,000 to $8,000 per year.

Pennsylvania State Grant (PHEAA)Application deadline date is May 1. State grant amounts are determined by the state of Pennsylvania and by the information provided on the FAFSA. PHEAA notifies students by letter regarding the annual amount awarded. This notification usually begins during the month of May. Students must be enrolled in a four- or two-year degree program and must be taking at least six (6) regular course credits.

Family Tuition GrantThe Family Tuition Grant is a special grant awarded to siblings and/or parents who are attending Mount Aloysius College simultane-ously. To be eligible for the grant, two (2) or more family members must be enrolled full-time during a given semester. The grant is also renewable each year as long as two (2) or more immediate family members continue to be enrolled full-time. Each enrolled family member is eligible for a tuition discount of $1,000 per year.

Mercy GrantThis special grant was established in 2008 to assist students in meeting tuition costs. It may be awarded to full-time students. Students are awarded a maximum of $1,000 per year.

Mount Aloysius College Residential GrantNew full-time students (Freshmen, Returning Adults, Transfers and Readmits) residing on campus will receive $1,500 during their first year and $750 all other years.

Mount Aloysius College Commuter GrantNew full-time students (Freshmen, Returning Adults, Transfers and Readmits) commuting to college will receive $1,000 during their first year and $500 all other years.

Saint Aloysius GrantA special scholarship awarded to out of state (non international) full-time freshman students. Each scholarship is valued at $1,500 per year.

Mercy Presidential ScholarshipStudents are invited to participate in this program as they apply to college and meet the requirements.

The Mercy Presidential Scholarship at Mount Aloysius College is designed to enhance and bring student leadership to the College. Candidates must demonstrate a solid academic record and a commitment to home, school and community. They must also possess leadership abilities, participate in extra-curricular activities, volunteer and be involved in community service projects.

Requirements for this program are a minimum of 1100 old scale/1530 new SAT or 23 ACT and 3.3 QPA. Students must apply to a four-year program and live on-campus. Awards are given to approximately thirty (30) new first-year students each fall. The scholarship is worth $12,000 each academic year.

Mercy Presidential Scholarship recipients are not eligible to receive a Mount Aloysius College Merit Grant or Scholarship. For more information or to apply, contact the Admissions Office. This scholarship has a potential value of $48,000. The deadline is February 15.

Theatre ScholarshipA special scholarship opportunity offered to full-time students entering Mount Aloysius as a new traditional student. This scholarship of $1,000 a year is renewable. Direct Federal Stafford LoanIn order to meet educational expenses, students may wish to borrow monies through the Federal Stafford Loan pro-gram. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must be on file in order for a Stafford Loan to be processed. Information obtained from the FAFSA determines the amount and type of loan for which the student is eligible.

The Direct Federal Stafford Loan falls under two (2) distinct types:

Subsidized Stafford Loan: This means the government pays the interest for the student while they are in school.

Unsubsidized Stafford Loan: This means the student is responsible to pay the interest. The interest can either be paid quarterly or the student can request the interest be capitalized.

Direct Parent Loans for Undergraduate Students (PLUS)Parents of dependent students may borrow up to the cost of education less any other financial aid through the PLUS program.

Alternative Loan ProgramsAlternative loan programs are separate from the Direct Federal Stafford Loan program and are used to supplement the financing of your college education. Unlike Stafford Loans, you may borrow up to the full cost of education minus any other financial aid you receive. The loans are usually at a higher interest rate, usually require a good credit standing and may require you to have a co-signer. Many federal and state aid programs available to undergraduate students are not available to graduate students (Pell and FSEOG Grants as well as many State programs). Much of the aid received by graduate students is in the form of loans.

To apply for a Direct Federal Stafford Loan, you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on a yearly basis. In addition, a Federal Stafford Loan Master Promissory Note (MPN) must be submitted to the Department of Education. Students wishing to receive Federal Stafford Loan monies to finance their graduate education must be enrolled in a degree program and are required to comply with all federal regulations regarding the verification of their FAFSA, satisfactory academic progress and withdrawal policies/procedures.

Graduate School LoansThere are both private and government loans available to graduate students. Examples include:

Federal Stafford Loan - low interest rate federal loans available to most students, even at half-time status. These loans are unsubsidized where you pay the interest while you are in school.

Federal Grad Plus Loan - federally sponsored, non-need, credit-based loan for students attending graduate school. Students must be enrolled at least half-time and can borrow up to the full cost of their education, less other financial aid received. Students must first exhaust their Federal Stafford Loan eligibility before applying for a Grad Plus loan. The interest rate on the Grad Plus loan is fixed at 7.9 percent.
