Several vacant plots in various places in and around Mogappair East, Mogappair West and Nolambur have been converted into conve-nient parking lots by owners of cars, mini-vans and heavy vehicles.

While in the Anna Nagar neighbourhood, vacant grounds are a rarity or have been compounded, due to its premier real estate value; in the Mogappair and Nolam-bur areas there are still quite some plots which have been left by their owners. Some of these plots have become dumping spots for garbage, as highlighted by Mogappair Mail on various occasions in the past.

Now, one can increasingly see that vacant grounds have transformed into parking spaces for vehicles. In some cases, the owners of the plots, who are residing out-side the neighbourhood, may not even be aware that their properties have been con-

verted into free parking lots.“Over the past 10 years or

so, the Mogappair and Nol-ambur neighbourhood have witnessed significant devel-opments. The vehicle popu-lation has significantly in-creased with many people buying cars. This is majorly because of easy availability of car loans from banks and private financiers who collect repayment in Equated Monthly Instalments (EMIs). However, people don’t have parking space as some of them live in ‘pigeon hole’ like houses,” points out Balamu-rali, an elderly gentleman,

who identified himself as a resident of Seethakathi Salai in Mogappair East. Conse-quently many car owners end up parking their vehicles on the roadside or in vacant plots.

In some places, vehicle owners have permanently occupied vacant plots and even entered into a mutual agreement among them-selves as to who would park their cars in which slot.

However, a few neigh-bours residing close to such vacant plots are not comfort-able with this. “Random people come and park their

vehicles. Some of them con-tinue to sit in the vehicle and chat or eat inside creating noise. We are worried what if someone leaves behind a stolen vehicle here. There is no one to monitor it at all. I think parking on vacant plots should not be permitted,” said Sivagami, a resident of Mogappair East pointing to one such ‘parking lot’ a few metres away. But some like Ravindran feel it is paranoid to think on these lines. “Somebody does not have a parking space and is there-fore parking it here. What is wrong with it,” he asked.

Vacant Plots Being Used for Parking Vehicles Banking services of post offices now online

Customers can now cut down on the time at the post offices as they can access services on-line. The Department of Posts recently launched banking service for savings account holders. Of late a good amount of customers in Chennai have registered for the online bank-ing facility offered through www.ebanking.in-diapost.gov.in.

Officials of the postal department said the service now limits transactions to post office savings bank accounts. Customers can either transfer funds between their accounts or to other account holders. People will have to fill an application form available at the post office for activation of online banking services. They will receive an alert through text message and will then have to register online.

A cross-section of users of various parks in Mogap-pair East and West is urg-ing authorities concerned to emulate the Anna Nagar Tower Park model and play some soothing music and Thirukural on a daily basis.

At the Anna Nagar Tower Park (Dr Viswesva-raya Park), which is a major landmark in Anna Nagar, every day as the clock strikes an hour, a Thirukural couplet along with is meaning is narrat-ed. Likewise in the eve-nings along with the hour-ly recitation of Thirukural, soothing background mu-sic score is played at the park. This is done through an audio system attached to the Anna Nagar Tower clock.

Having experienced it, some of the park users in the Mogappair neighbour-hood are now seeking that an audio system could be installed at the various parks such as Mangal Eri

“I discovered this only when I went to the Anna Nagar Tower Park recently after going for shopping in the locality. I was pleas-antly surprised to see walk-ers enjoying their brisk walk with music in the background. And I won-dered why this couldn’t be implemented in every other park. After all, each and every public park is

being maintained only by the same agency, which is the Greater Chennai Cor-poration,” said Anwar Mohammed, a resident of Pari Salai in Mogappair East.

A walker in Mangal Eri Park, Dhruv Pandey, said that though he cannot read Tamil, he can understand the language. “Therefore, if Thirukural is played in audio format with expla-nation while we are work-ing out in the park, it will help people like me to gain some knowledge about it. We have heard that it is a

sort of a treatise for the humans on life and living. And music of course is always good,” he added.

Dhruv had another sig-nificant point to make. “Nowadays many of the walkers who come here are wearing headphones. But this is not good for the ear drums. Imagine someone playing music on head-phone for one hour while they are working out! If soft music is played in the background through an audio system, then people also do not have to use headphones,” he felt.

Student stabbedat Ayapakkam

A 15-year-old boy was stabbed by an uniden-tified man at his residence at Ayapakkam on Thursday. The victim, V Jayakumar (15), is a Class 10 student of a government school in Athipattu and police are enquiring from his classmates hoping to get some clues.

Jayakumar was on the terrace of his house at Devi Nagar in Ayapakkam when the incident occurred. Neighbours rushed to the terrace and saw Jayakumar lying in a pool of blood, accord-ing to an official. He was taken to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital from where he was

transferred to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital since his condition was found to be serious. Police said Jayakumar had been stabbed in his chest, abdomen and legs.

Slowing a person’s nicotine metabolism rate through reduced drinking could pro-vide an edge when trying to stop smok-ing, which is known to be a difficult task, said lead researcher Sarah Dermody, As-sistant Professor at the Oregon State Univer-sity in the US.

“It takes a lot of determination to quit

smoking, often several attempts,” Dermody said.

For the study, the re-searchers considered a small group of daily smokers to study the nicotine metabolite ra-tio, the medical term for severe problem drink-ing.

The findings, pub-lished in the journal Nicotine and Tobacco Research, showed that as the men in the study group reduced their drinking -- from an aver-age of 29 drinks per week to seven -- their nicotine metabolite rate also dropped.

The women, howev-er, did not see reduc-tions in their nicotine metabolite ratio.

A key stretch on the Park Road in Anna Nagar Western Extension is liter-ally in a shambles. The stretch, just yards ahead of Millennium Park and the road that turns to School Road, is not just ridden with huge potholes, loose bitumen and dust. And it has remained so for quite some months now making residents of the locality and regular motorists won-der if it would even be re-paired at all.

The Park Road is a ma-jor road that connects people living in parts of Mogappair, Collector Nagar, Padikuppam Road and Welcome Colony to the Padi Main Road as well as to the School Road that leads to the SBOA School and the Anna Nagar West Bus Depot.

Those riding on the road complain while there are quite a few potholes what scares them is one stretch which becomes a cesspool during rainy sea-

Often times, we have come across two-wheeler riders zipping past oblivious to the damaged road hitting the pothole and losing bal-ance. Even car drivers, who fail to see the battered stretch, end up getting their vehicle’s underbelly badly hit,” complains Rudraksh, a resident of an apartment on Park Road.

Locals say it is a very common thing for two-wheeler riders to skid on the stretch. “In the morn-ing, this road witnesses peak traffic. People scurry-ing to drop their children off at two nearby schools and morning walkers, who come on two-wheelers to Millennium Park, struggle to cross this stretch. There is hardly any motorable space at all here. Car driv-ers try their best to avoid

hitting the road bump but rarely succeed. Yet no steps have been taken to repair this stretch,” points out Lingam, who is a regu-lar visitor to the Millenni-um park.

In the late evenings, the problem worsens, accord-ing to locals and road users as the lighting on the road is poor because of the somewhat dense tree cover on either sides. “Many motorists fail to see the

bumpy stretch at night. They have to use some last minute skills to ensure that their scooters don’t skid. At least the authorities could fill some rubble here to ensure that motorists don’t suffer like this,” sug-gests Lingam.
