The renovation of the spacious M o g a p p a i r
bus terminus has been long awaited. This includes new bus shel-ters, better lighting facilities, digital tim-ing boards, hygienic toilets, taps and relay-ing of bus bays. It’s good news for the commuters as work has started now.
The terminus oper-ates around 60 bus services. The students and office goers are the ones who com-mute mostly to vari-ous parts of the city.
Cover ing more than one acre, the ter-minus is located at the centre of the neigh-bourhood. Most of the commuters prefer to wait near the en-trance of the termi-nus, due to the dam-aged and dusty seat-ing arrangements along the bus bays.
Security remains another cause for con-cern for commuters, especially women and senior citizens, as boarding buses from the terminus after sun-set is risky. The exist-ing stormwater drains
inside the terminus also get c logged, which prevents the discharge of excess rainwater from this facility.
The terminus was constructed more than two decades ago. The last time the terminus got renovat-ed was 10 years back when G Beemarao was the Maduravoyal MLA. He allotted I 53.50 lakh from his local constituency fund for the restora-tion of the terminus along with funds from MTC.

Residents of Maraimalai Adi-galar Road in Mogappair East have been left fuming over the battered state of the road for the past nearly two years now. The road, which connects Ori Salai and Pari Salai with the Mogap-pair East Industrial Estate, Gold-en George Nagar and a few other places, was dug up by contractors engaged by a civic agency many months ago. After the civic work was completed, a new tar road was not laid and instead the trenches were covered haphaz-ardly at different places.
Riding on the road now is proving to be a nightmarish expe-rience not just for those riding two-wheelers but even for those driving a car, mini-van and heavy vehicles such as lorries and water tankers. The road, which branch-es off from Ori Salai and meets the Valayapathi Salai at the other end, is not just full of potholes but also has uneven speed breakers, that are above the normal height.
While the Ori Salai was relaid last year, the Maraimalai Adiga-lar Road has been left unattended to, complain residents. “If you are driving a car, you are sure to
damage the chassis of the vehicle, unless you know the topography of this road very well. At some places, the potholes are so huge and uneven that the protruding heavy stones would damage the car’s underbelly,” says Shanmu-gam, a resident of the street, who lives in a rented accommodation.
“We are left wondering why when the Greater Chennai Cor-poration laid the Ori Salai, it did not do the same in our street. At least they could have used the COVID-19 lockdown and under-taken road laying works. There would have been little disturbance then. Now we don’t know when they will lay this road,” said an-other resident, who pointed out that recently the bus route road of Valayapathi Salai was also given a fresh coating of tar and bitumen.
“I heard that some residents had sent representations to the Greater Chennai Corporation urging the civic agency conduct an inspection and lay this road. However, nothing has come of it. With the monsoon set to arrive soon, we are worried about how driving will become even more difficult on this road,” added the resident.

the Indian contingent that created chess history by winning the first gold med-al in the Olympiad on Sunday. India were de-clared joint champions with formidable Russia in an anti-climactic end to the event played online due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

decision was then reversed. India defeated China, Ar-menia and Poland on the way to the final.
Other members of the team include: Vishwana-than Anand, Vidit Santosh Gujarati, P. Harikrishna, Koneru Humpy, Drona-va l l i Har ika , Bhak t i Kulkarni, Nihal Sarin, Divya Deshmukh and Van-tika Agrawal. R. Vaishali (former Velammalian) and Arvindh Chithambaram (former Velammalian).

in Tamil NaduSix overnight train services from Chennai to Madurai,
Coimbatore, Thoothukudi, Mettupalayam, Kanniyaku-mari and Sengottai are set to resume from September 7.
On Thursday, the state government requested the railways to resume more train services connecting vari-ous parts of the state with Chennai.
Acting on this, the railways has proposed to resume six train services: Chennai – Madurai Pandiyan Express, Chennai – Kanniyakumari Express, Chennai – Thoothu-kudi Pearl City Express, Chennai – Coimbatore Cheran Express, Chennai – Mettupalayam Nilagiri Express and Chennai – Sengottai Silambu Express
In addition to seven intercity specials, six overnight trains which remained cancelled since March 21 will resume services. All the trains will have only reserved coaches.
Govt offices to work for 6 days a week
till DecThe Tamil Nadu Government has announced that
all the state government offices will be functioning for 6 days a week, till the month of December.
In order to complete all the pending works, which was disrupted with the lockdown period of more than 4 months, the state government has announced that the Government offices, from Sept 1, will function on Saturdays too.
Earlier the Government offices were run with 50% work force, but with Nationwide Unlock phase 4, the state government has instructed the government of-fices to function with 100% employees, while Saturdays will also be working days to compensate for the work-ing hours lost. Since public transport has also begun its services, the employees are mandated to report to work on their regular work time.

LIST OF FOOD ITEMS to be avoided before bedtime
The quality of your sleep is greatly affected by what you eat and at
what time you eat it.Being mindful of what you
eat before bedtime can help you get a good night’s sleep. The quality of your sleep is greatly affected by what you eat and at what time you eat it.
A list of food items which should be avoided before bedtime:
CRUCIFEROUS VEGETABLESCruciferous vegetables are
broccoli, cauliflower, and cab-bage. They all are very good for health in general but they are probably not the best thing to load up before you head to bed. These veggies can interfere with your ability to sleep soundly
because you’re likely still digest-ing all that fiber while trying to fall asleep, which leads to being less than comfortable.
Eat those good for you veg-gies earlier in the day, so your body has time to digest them before you lay down for the night. It has insoluble fibres which can not let your digestive system stay at peace during the night.
ICE CREAMS AND HIGH SUGAREating a bowl of ice cream
before bed may hit the spot, but it won’t make for the a good night’s sleep. Like fatty cheese, ice cream can take a while to digest and your body really isn’t able to rest well while you’re still working on digesting.
Sugar can also cause your
energy to spike, keeping you from easily falling asleep. That sugar and fat makes ice cream a sleep disruptor, rather than supporter.
Candy bars, ice creams, cakes, etc, are all a big no when it comes to eating before bed. Yes it may sound very comfort-ing to have these after dinner but because of the high sugar content, the calories from them cannot be used immediately so it can get stored as fat.
CITRIC FRUITS AND TOMATOESTomatoes are good for your
skin; it is sad that eating toma-toes them at night can have a negative impact on your sleep. This is mainly because of tyra-mine, which is a type of amino acid. This chemical increases the activity of your brain and delays sleep.
No one ever said that citrus fruit can ever be unhealthy but due to the high vitamin C con-tent, it is not ideal as bedtime food as it may cause acidity and heartburn if not digested prop-erly. It will not only disturb your sleep cycle but also spoil the next day with all the burning sensations.
ALCOHOLWhile you might think
you’re getting drowsy after that glass of wine, drinking alcohol right before bed can affect qual-ity of sleep. Alcohol might be soothing before bed, but is actu-ally very disruptive for your sleep cycle and causes negative effects on rapid eye movement. You may fall asleep faster after a glass of wine, but you’re prob-ably gonna wake up tomorrow still feeling pretty tired.
RED MEAT, CURED MEAT AND CHEESECheese might be the worst
offender of all the high-fat foods you could eat before at-tempting to go to sleep.
Red meat contains high pro-tein and cured meat and chees-es have an amino acid tyramine which makes you alert.
CAFFEINATED DRINKS AND CHOCOLATEWe all know why high caf-
feine drinks should be avoided before bed as it can lead to sleeplessness but the same goes for chocolate.
Chocolate also has caffeine in it and is a sneaky one before bedtime because along with caffeine it also has an amino acid that makes you alert. Chocolate can be a good energy booster in the afternoon but it is not a good energy booster at night. Source: Internet
Danger is lurking at the Park Road in Anna Nagar West Extension as dried up trees are not being cut down. The dr ied up branches of the tree which are spread over the road are posing a threat to the
passersby. But the officials are yet to take any action. The dried-up branches are drooping dangerously over the road through which many vehicles and thou-sands of people pass through every other day.
Delay in taking remedial measures will increase the chances of an accident sooner or later. It’s high time the corporation au-thorities remove the dried up trees before the inevi-table happens.

MESSAGE TO THE ROMAN CATHOLICSGreetings to you all.
Finally the long-awaited permission to open the Churches has come but with unexpected condition of “Mass without commu-nion”. Our Archbishop has also sent a circular with the same instruction to cele-brate masses without giv-ing communion apart from following other sanitary
measures. “As you all know, Holy Communion is an integral part of our Mass and for me, it will be odd to celebrate Mass for people without giving com-munion.” Yesterday I called some of our parish council members and dis-cussed about it. And they were all of the opinion that we could wait resuming
Masses until we get permis-sion to distribute commu-nion to the faithful during Mass.
The following decisions have been made in the meet-ing:
1. Church shall be kept open for the faithful for their visits and personal prayers.
2. All measures regard-ing sanitation and health care shall be followed in the Church premises.
3. As decided by us and our Vicariate, “No Masses will be celebrated for the people until distribution of Holy Communion is al-lowed.”
4. Once we resume Masses, social distancing will be followed and if need be we increase the number of Masses. (De-tails will be given before we resume the Masses).
5. It is predicted that Covid- 19 will be at its peak in September. Let us be careful and NOT be the cause for the same.
Stay safe. Pray and wait for the day to attend Mass and receive communion very soon. Sorry for this unpleasant decision.
Fr. Charles Kumar,Parish priest.

Totally unconventional filmAs a new initiative, Neelam Productions presents a
film that would define a paradigm shift in Tamil Cin-ema. Director Pa Ranjith’s Neelam Productions had produced films like Pariyerum Perumal and Gundu that were both critically acclaimed and well-received by the audience.
The production house has several other interesting films in the pipeline. Continuing with its initiatives, Neelam productions presents Kuthiraivaal, starring Kalaiarasan and Anjali Patil. In its effort to encourage new and off-beat films, the production house shall re-lease the film soon. Directed by debutant filmmakers Manoj Leonel Jahson and Shyam Sunder, Kuthiraivaal stands out as a totally unconventional film in compari-son to run-of-the-mill mainstream cinema.
COVID-19 CASES REMAIN HIGH in Anna Nagar, Ambattur zones
By N Rathi Chithra
The number of peo-ple testing positive for novel coronavi-
rus disease (COVID-19) continues to be higher in Anna Nagar and Ambat-tur Zones of the Greater Chennai Corporation.
For the uninitiated, the Greater Chennai Corpora-tion is divided into 15 zones comprising 200 wards. These zones are Tiruvottiyur (Zone 1), Manali (Zone 2), Madha-varam (Zone 3), Tondiar-pet (Zone 4), Royapuram (Zone 5), Thiru Vi Ka Nagar (Zone 6), Ambattur (Zone 7), Anna Nagar (Zone 8), Teynampet (Zone 9), Kodambakkam (Zone 10), Valasaravak-
kam (Zone 11), Alandur (Zone 12), Adyar (Zone 13), Perungudi (Zone 14) and Sholinganallur (Zone 15).
Presently – as on the morning of September 5 – the Anna Nagar Zone had 1,368, active COV-ID-19 patients. This was the highest number of patients undergoing treat-ment in all the 15 zones. Next in line was the Kod-ambakkam Zone, which had 1,366 patients. As for the Ambattur Zone, it had 948 active patients. The cases are the lowest in Manali Zone, which had only 159 patients.
According to a Greater Chennai Corporation of-ficial in the Anna Nagar Zone, so far 14,162 pa-
tients have recovered hav-ing been completely cured of COVID-19. This was a success rate of 89 per cent. “As many as 316 residents of the Anna Nagar Zone, who had contracted CO-VID-19 since the outbreak of the contagious disease, did not survive,” he added. In so far as the Ambattur Zone was concerned, the recovery rate was similar at 89 per cent but the num-ber of patients who were successfully treated is 8,650. “As for case mortal-ity rate, in Ambattur Zone, 158 persons have suc-cumbed to the novel coro-navirus disease,” the offi-cial explained.
The official said that the Greater Chennai Cor-poration is now paying
extra attention to prevent-ing the spread of the pan-demic in zones such as Anna Nagar and Ambat-tur where there is a high incidence of spread. “In the beginning of the out-break of the disease, i.e. during late March-April onwards, the spread was greater in north Chennai. However, later it spread to the western parts of the city. We want to focus on ensuring that everyone out on the streets wears a face mask properly (covering the nostrils) and maintains a safe personal distancing. In addition to that we are encouraging people to wash hands regularly with soap and water to prevent the disease spread,” he said.
In an effort to limit the devotees inside a given temple, the Hindu Reli-gious and Charitable En-dowments (HR and CE) Department has intro-duced a token system for the entry of devotees into temples. Initially, the token systems were introduced in the city-based temples: Vadapalani Murugan Tem-ple, Kapaleeswarar Temple and Thiruvottriyur Vadivu-daiyamman Temple.
The official release from HR & CE said that those who wish to have darshan in temples can either go directly to the place of wor-ship, get tokens and enter according to the time men-tioned on it or apply for tokens online. Apart from
tokens, temples will also sell tickets for darshan.
Also it was said that the devotees can avail the to-ken and reserve their slots through an app or SMS by furnishing Aadhaar num-ber or an identity card. Apparently, the Annadha-nam will become a take-h o m e s e r v i c e . N o ‘Thiruneer’ or ‘Kungu-mam’ will be offered. Dev-otees will not be allowed to sit inside the temple. No VIP darshan will be enter-tained, according to the SOPs furnished by the Hindu Religious Charita-ble and Endowments De-par tment (HR&CE). Meanwhile, Devotees visit-ing mosques have to bring their own prayer mats.

Velammal organisesvirtual Zumba dance
Emphasising the importance of physical activity especially during this pandemic Velammal conducted 'Dance to stay fit, Zest Zumba' with expert Zumba instructors Ms. Premalatha and Ms.Vanga Mansa. It was live streamed recently in YouTube channel Velam-mal Nexus, which attracted several thousands of view-ers.
While some are born great, some achieve great-ness by their innate passion and dedication with a spir-it of service to the society. One such rarest of the rare noble souls is P Hariku-mar, who at the pinnacle of his career renounced his highly coveted top-most position as the Head of Operations-Sales & Mar-keting for South East Asia in a well-known Multina-tional Company, which carried a six figure month-ly emolument, royal work-ing conditions and perqui-sites, decided to dedicate the rest of his life to serve as a volunteer for the wel-fare of the visually im-paired children at Nethro-daya.
He was born in the year 1967 and hails from Pera-vom village in Kerala.
However, he had his school and collegiate education at Chennai. His holy pilgrim-age to Sabarimala from childhood stands testimo-ny to his deep spirituality. It is very interesting and inspiring to know that he in his younger days had passion to dedicate his life for a good social cause, after saving adequate sum
of money from his earn-ings to meet his future fi-nancial needs.
He had struck a mas-terly balance between his passion and his responsi-bilities towards his beloved family. In order to serve the visually impaired students at Nethrodaya, he quit his employment, shifted from Mumbai to Chennai and
settled near Nethrodaya. His first visit to Nethro-
daya was on 29th August 2019. Since then, every day he has been teaching and training the visually impaired students in devel-oping their academic as well as soft skills. He had given his best to the com-panies he worked for as a paid employee, and simi-larly he has been giving his best to Nethrodaya as well as a volunteer without dif-ferentiating between his employment and now as a volunteer, which is indeed a very noble quality of a serving mind and soul. He is a shining role model for others to emulate and serve the disabled children. Nethrodaya honoured P Harikumar with the award.

Though the Greater Chennai Corpora-tion has opened
city parks for walkers a few days ago, fear of the virus spread had kept most of the walkers away from the parks. There are as many as 632 parks in the city maintained by the civic body and 57 new parks are on the anvil.
The Mangal ERI park in Mogappair was a busy
park and more than 500 walkers used to visit before the outbreak. However for the past few days one saw only fewer people visiting the park.
Moreover it has been informed that the civic body has mandated masks and social distancing in-side the park apart from banning leisurely visitors. The opening duration of the park timings has also
been cut down by the civic body. Any violations of the (SOP) standard operating procedures by the walkers, the park would be closed down again.
As many as 20 to 50 persons would be allowed inside medium size parks and up to 100 persons would be allowed in bigger parks like Panagal Park, Natesan Park and others. Tower Park in Anna Nagar
is the largest park in the city and we will allow up to 200 persons at a time inside the park.
The private contractors, who are under taking maintenance of the park are been asked to install hand-washing facilities inside the parks. Also, some parks in the city are yet to be opened as they await disinfection by the civic body.
Scary walkers fail to turn up, many parks remain closed
TN govt call for morerevenue collection
Since there is a huge revenue deficit due to pan-demic lockdown, the Tam-il Nadu government has instructed various depart-ments to hasten revenue collection.
The key departments like Revenue, Municipal Administration and Water Supply have been directed
to scale up revenue collec-tion. Following this, au-thorities have started send-ing demand notices on pending water charges, property tax and commer-cial tax arrears.
Though the official said the departments have been asked not to harass the public, the notices have
sent a kind of uneasiness among traders and prop-erty owners.
DEADLINE EXTENDEDMuch to the relief of
the residents, Greater Chennai Corporation has announced that the civic body would extend the deadline to pay property and professional taxes and commercial property li-cence fee till September 30 without any penalty.
SAFETY MEASURES at Metro Rail
A majority of commut-ers who regularly used the Metro Rail before the CO-VID-19 pandemic are ap-prehensive about their re-turn because of air-condi-tioned trains and stations.
According to Chennai Metro Rai l L imi ted (CMRL) a slew of mea-sures have been taken to ramp up safety. When trains halt at each station, they usually wait for 20 seconds but now this has been increased to 50 sec-onds. Underground sta-tions are air conditioned and precautionary mea-sures have been taken by maintaining the inside temperature at 24-30 de-gree centigrade and rela-tive humidity at 40-70 per cent. Temperature inside the coaches is maintained at 25 degree C to 27 degree C as per guidelines and
fresh air supply will be in-creased from 25 per cent to 100 per cent.
Air handling units and fresh air fans would be operational two hours be-fore starting the service and stopped two hours af-ter to ensure no contami-nation remained inside. The tunnels also have ven-tilation fans.
