PORTFOLIO GUIDELINES The MA Historical Costume course is all about you developing your skills in the field of dress history, costume making and design relating to a historical context. We would like to see that you have the impulse to interrogate what you do in terms of practice, theory and professionalism. As part of your application we expect to see a portfolio of work that demonstrates your skills, interests and specialism.

You should also be able to offer an outline of the kind of outcomes you want to achieve during the MA. Do you want to make or design a costume? Do you want to produce some other body of work (for example, a written paper, or a series of costume designs)? Are you interested in a specific historical period?

What you want to do on the MA should be apparent from the work you show us in your portfolio and from your previous achievements. When you are interviewed, the conversation will focus on some of the portfolio work submitted within the application.

Portfolio Listed below are a number of suggestions to help you when you are collecting your work together. Not all of these will be appropriate to you, as it depends on your specialist interests.

- Thorough sketchbook work indicating private study and an extensive interest in historical costume and other visual arts/media

- Research study portfolio of BA or other relevant course work

- Life drawing portfolio and observational drawing

- Costume ideas and sketchbooks of visuals

- Any costume work either in an amateur orprofessional context

Digital Portfolio Applicants who are unable to attend interview will be requested to submit a link to an online portfolio; full details of how to submit this will be sent to you by Admissions, via MyApplication, once your application has been received. We may also make arrangements for a Skype interview if necessary.
