What is the CAN bus?

The CAN bus (Controller Area Network) is a serial bus system developed by Bosch for automotive applications. He was presented with Intel in 1985.

The objective was to reduce the amount of cables in a vehicle (there were at this time up to 2 km of cable per car) by communicating the various controls on a single bus rather than on dedicated lines.

This has reduced the weight of vehicles, to allow more functionality and automation possibility, especially more security.

The CAN bus has been standardized with ISO 11898.
