If you plan on attending, please send your response and $$$ so we can make the proper arrangements. The April meeting had an ex- cellent turnout. Andy Cum- mings was kind enough to share a slide presentation on a recent trip to New Zealand. The images of the “Poor Knight Island” were quite in- teresting. Over the past few months, some new members have joined and some “old friends” have come back. It was great to see you all. In September, we will have a members present night. If you have done a recent trip or lo- cal dive and want to share it with the group, let Matt and/or I know. The underwater Easter Egg Hunt was fun. The weather was brutal, so turnout was light, but that did not dampen the spirits of the hardy group who showed. Our own George Sharrard will be presenting at the May meet- ing about diving off Newfound- land. For those of you who may be geographically challenged, that’s in Canada. To accommodate for Memorial Weekend, the May meeting will be on Friday May 21st and not the last Friday of the month. That’s all for now….. Remem- ber, Clambake June 5th, that’s the FCDA Clambake Saturday June 5th…that’s the day after June 4th and the day before June 6th, 2010.

Timeline of Recreational Diving in North America This timeline is meant only as a short overview of some of the major events of sport diving history. It was com-piled by Thomas Tillman. 1956 - The first wetsuit was introduced by researchers at the University of California. Edco produces the first suits. 1956 - Ted Nixon introduces the red and white "Divers Down" flag. 1957 - Al Tillman and Zale Parry organize the first International Underwater Film Festival. Subsequent festivals were held in various cities around the world. 1958 - Sherwood Manufacturing releases the piston regulator. 1958 - Sea Hunt airs and becomes the driving force in bringing in unprecedented numbers of new divers to the sport. The show stars Lloyd Bridges as Mike Nelson and is produced by veteran producer Ivan Tors. Famous di-vers including Zale Parry, Lamar Boren, and Al Tillman work in front of or behind the cameras on the show. 1959 - The YMCA develops the first national diver certification program. 1959 - The Underwater Society of America was formed. 1960 - Al Tillman (Founder of the Los Angeles County Underwater Unit) and Neal Hess (Columist and Director of the of the National Diving Patrol for Skin Diver Magazine), with help from Garry Howland and John Jones, create the National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI) and hold its first instructor certification course in Houston during the Underwater Society of America Convention. Tillman adapts the Los Angeles County course to be taught to individuals from any diving venue and NAUI incorporates as a non-profit agency. NAUI becomes the first international certification agency. Early financing and administrative assistance for the agency came from Skin Diver Magazine. 1961 - John Gaffney founded the National Association of Skin Diving Schools (NASDS). 1962 - Ed Link spends 24 hours at 200 feet in the "Man in the Sea" project. 1963 - Dick Bonin and Gustav dalla Valle found Scubapro. Gustav later becomes internationally famous as one of the primier wine producers in the world. 1965 - Al Tillman creates UNEXSO in Freeport, Grand Bahama Island. UNEXSO becomes a prototype for the complete destination diving resort. For the first time people had a place to go the catered only to divers and provided, in house, everything needed for both in-water and out-of-water activities. 1966 - John Cronin and Ralph Ericson found the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI). 1970 - Scuba Schools International (SSI) was founded by Bob Clark. 1971 - Scubapro introduces the Stabilization Jacket.

From the Secretary’s Desk: I found this on-line—thought it was interesting. This is part 3 (more to come)

Page 7

From the Secretary’s Desk - Really nice free stuff !! The MetroWest Dive Club ( http://www.mwdc.org/ ) has a link to the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management web site where you can get 20 downloadable in-formation cards on aquatic inva-sive species. ( http://www.mass.gov/czm/invasives/monitor/id.htm )

Identifying Aquatic Inva-sive Species

To help detect and monitor AIS, CZM funded the development of 20 species identification cards for marine invaders in the Gulf of Maine - which were created by Salem Sound Coastwatch. Of the 20 cards, 13 are already estab-lished in the region, and seven are considered potential invaders. There is a .zip file that contains all 20 ‘flash cards’ - one side has a picture and detailed description—the other side has additional infor-mation. Because these are .pdf files, printing them off is a snap.
