M2 ASSEMBLY GUIDE

Thanks for buying the M2 CNC Automated Cutting Machine by Maker Made! The following instructions are intended for beginners - with no prior CNC experience. We’ll be releasing an upgrade guide, as well as a paired down guide for experienced users soon.

Here are some notes on the layout:

1. First off, I’m Drew and I took the lead on creating this guide. My notes are tips and tricks to help you along. They are in a different font, blue, and look like this:

They are meant to anwser some of the “why” questions you might have and give you tips to get started. We suggest printing the guide in color, if you want a paper copy.

2. Setting up the M2 can be broken down into three main parts: building the M2, building the frame (or mounting it on an existing Maslow frame), and calibration.

3. Since this guide is aimed at beginners, the calibration section also contains operation instructions. Then you’ll know the whole process from creating a digital file to cutting it out on your M2!

If you have experience with the Maslow, the M2’s older brother, you can use your existing frame! Just follow the steps to build the M2 and skip the part on Easel to learn how to calibrate with Makerverse.

We hope you enjoy setting up your kit and check out our Resources page for support and links to our community. Happy making!

Drew’s Note: Let us know how this guide can be improved for beginners. We love to hear from you!

1. Attach H1 Z motor bracket, but do not fully tighten (will tighten fully in Step 6), using H6 bolts and H9 Allen Wrench.

2. Attach Z motor to H1, with the motor shaft in the slot farthest from assembly, rotated with it’s bottom plug also toward the outside. Use H7 bolts and H9 Allen Wrench.

3. Attach H2 large gear to motor, just above shaft base, ensuring one H3 large grub screw is on flat side of motor shaft. Attach with H3 grub screws (also called set screws) using H9 Allen Wrench.

4. Line up small H4 Z-axis gear on lead screw, flush with gears on H3, tighten with 2 smaller H5 grub screws using smaller H10 Allen Wrench.

5. Loop H8 belt around gears, ensuring belt is level between gears.

6. Tighten belt by gripping Z-axis motor and pulling toward yourself until the belt is very tight. Use your other hand to tighten the Z motor bracket with H9 Allen wrench.

M2 ASSEMBLY PART 2: ATTACH BELTS AND MOTOR TO Z-AXIS ASSEMBLY (BAG H)

Drew’s Note: Be sure that your belt is tight! If the belt is loose, your M2 will not move properly.

M2 ASSEMBLY GUIDE

Drew’s Note: Updating products is especially during these times. We currently have two active M2 versions that you may have recieved. This page is for the first version, the next is version B. Check out Step 1 to see which version you have and you’ll be good from there. We appreciate your patience.

1. If your sled has rails attached, as seen below, skip to the next page. If not, go to step 2A.

2A. Attach router clamp to Z-Axis Assembly using bolts screwed into clamp. Attach as shown with Z5 Allen wrench.

Drew’s Note: The Z-Axis Assembly attaches to the sled with T-nuts. They are marvels of engineering that are specially designed to turn sideways when being tightened. This fastens parts to aluminum extrusions at different angles. Sometimes, you have to loosen and retighten them to get them to turn.

3A. Mount Z-Axis assembly to sled by inserting six Z6 screws in Bag Z through bottom. Loosely attach using Z4 T-nuts.

4A. Turn T-nuts parallel with dust cover acrylic. Slide Z-Axis assembly over t-nuts, and align router clamp with center hole. Tighten T-nuts with Phillips screwdriver. Go to Part 4.

2B. Mount Z-Axis assembly to sled by aligning extrusion “legs” with the two rail “feet” that are already attached to the sled.

3B. Line up leg extrusions with side-threaded holes and bolt to rail foot extrusions on each side. Slide extrusion legs onto rail feet until it threaded holes line up on the side.

4B. Insert longer Z2 bolts into holes on each side to secure. Tighten using Z5 Allen Wrench.

5B. Attach four Z1 L-brackets to each side of the extrusion legs.Ensure that they turn 90 degrees. Use two Z4 T-Nuts and shorter Z3 bolts per bracket using Z5 Allen wrench.

6B. Attach router clamp to Z-Axis Assembly using bolts screwed into clamp. Attach as shown with Z5 Allen Wrench.

M2 ASSEMBLY GUIDE

1. Attach router bit to router, insert into router clamp, and tighten clamp with Z5 Allen Wrench.

2. Loosen bottom T-nuts with Phillips screwdriver and move sled back and forth until router bit is alligned with exact center of M2 sled hole.

3. Tighten T-nuts on bottom and ensure they turned b ypopping off the end caps on the rail feet. You can look down the rail and see them turned. Replace the caps.

4. Check all of the bolts and T-nuts on your Z-Axis Assembly. During shipping and use, bolts can vibrate loose. Pay special attention to the grub screws that hold the Z-axis bearings in place on the top and bottom of the lead screw.

5. The Z-axis motor power cable (the longest one) plugs into the motor by pulling the cord up from under the waste board to keep it out of the way while cutting.

6. Attach PVC dust collection elbow under Z-axis motor after you plug in the motor power cable.

M2 ASSEMBLY PART 4: CENTERING YOUR ROUTER AND FINAL STEPS

Drew’s Note: It’s supposed to be a snug fit to keep scraps from flying everywhere. Check out our M2 Resources and Maker Marketplace for dust collection ideas!

Drew’s Note: It’s very important that the router bit is in the exact center of M2 hole! All of the triangulation math for the M2’s GRBL code is based of the assumption that your bit is in the exact center. If it is off, even by a few millimeters, it will result in your M2 cutting incorrectly.

Drew’s Note: Use enclosed zip ties for cord maintenance!

BUILDING YOUR FRAME

This Section is how to build your frame for your M2. It is split into six main sections: Building the wasteboard, building the top beam, leveling your frame and attaching your material, mounting the chains, mounting your M2, and connecting your DUE board.

Drew’s Note: We recommend reading this entire section before beginning.

M2 ASSEMBLY GUIDE

The next step to starting your M2 CNC adventure is to build the frame that will hold your material and the M2 while it cuts. The M2 mounts for your frame are included, but you will need to purchase the following from a local hardware store to build the standard 4x8’ frame. If you already have a Maslow frame, you’re good to go!

Wood needed:

BUILDING YOUR FRAME PART 1: WASTEBOARD (BAG D)

Item2”x4”x8’ Board2”x4”x10’ Board1”x6”x8’ Board4’x8’x3/4” Plywood or MDF

Quantity3111

UseFrame Legs and SupportTop BeamFooterWasteboard

The Frame has 2 main parts: The top beam that holds the motors, and the wasteboard that you clamp or screw the material that you are cutting to.

Drew’s Note: The size of material the M2 can cut is only limited by the chain length. These instructions are based on the chain included with your M2 and will walk you through how to set up your kit to cut material almost to the edge of the 4x8’ space. These instructions are based on attaching the Top Beam to a wall. If you are intersted in a different frame size or design, check out our M2 Resources page or the Owners group on Facebook for help!

1. To build the wasteboard, cut the (2) 2” x 4” x 8’ boards in half to make the four legs.2. Line all four boards up and measure up 12” from bottom. Use a speed square to draw a line.3. Place the 1” x 6” x 8’ footer board across the legs, underneath the 12” line. Arrange the legs with one on each end and two spaced out in the middle. Attach the footer to the four legs with D1 screws underneath line. This will ensure your wasteboard is 12” from the ground.

Drew’s Note: Use a speed square to attach legs in straight lines, it’s very important that this is square!

Drew’s Note: The four most important things to keep in mind when building the frame are: 1. The bottom of your wasteboard should be 12” from the bottom of your legs. 2. The wasteboard should be clamped or screwed onto the stud mounts, to maintain a 15 degree angle. 3. The target distance of the motor offset (from where the chain leaves the motor sprockets to the top of the wasteboard) should be at least 18” for a 4’x8’ frame.4. Your top beam and wasteboard must be level and equal distance from eachother.

6. Two of the stud mounts will hold your wasteboard at the top corners, so it rests at a 15 degree angle when you’re cutting (with the largest end closest to the ground). Find two studs in your wall that are 8’ apart and mark them. Then, lean the wasteboard against the wall and align one of the studs close to the edge. Hold the stud mount between the wall and the leaning wasteboard and mark the top hole of the stud mount. Attach it to the stud in the wall using D2 screws.

M2 ASSEMBLY GUIDE

4. Attach the motor mounts on each edge of the top beam, flush with the ends. Use one D1 screw on front and four on top.

5. Place motor in left bracket, with cylindrical end toward center. Slide lock E4 washers over E3 screws and fasten screws through the front of the motor with a Phillips Screwdriver.

6. Attach E1 motor sprocket by inserting the E2 grub screw into the gear hole, aligning with the flat side of the motor shaft, and tightening with E5 Allen wrench to prevent slipping.

7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 to mount the motor on right side.

1. Measure the distance from the ground to the bottom of the stud mount. Attach the other wasteboard stud mount to the stud on the opposite side at the exact same height.

2. Lean your wasteboard against the stud mounts and arrange it until it is level across the top. Clamp the wasteboard to the stud mounts and mark 10” up from the top of your wasteboard on the wall above each stud mount. This will be where the bottom of the top beam stud mounts will attach to the wall and ensure the required 18” distance between your wasteboard top edge and the top of the to be installed motor sprockets.

3. Measure and mark the exact middle of the 10’ top beam. Repeat on your wasteboard. Then measure how far the wasteboard stud mounts are from its center. Mark the equal distance on your top beam, to ensure your top beam will be centered with your wasteboard. Attach the stud mounts to the 10’ top beam with D1 screws and a speed square. Ensure that they are the same distance up from the bottom of your beam, and the larger end is placed to be closest to the ground. Pilot holes that are 0.5” from the bottom edge can help.

M2 ASSEMBLY GUIDE

2. The material you are cutting will need to by clamped to the wasteboard stud mounts or screwed into the wasteboard. We recommend both clamping at the top and screwing in at the bottom to prevent warping.

If you want to screw your wasteboard to the wall and not use clamps, mark on your level wasteboard where it rests on the stud mounts. Remove the wasteboard stud mounts from the wall, and attach using those guide marks. Reattach to the wall into the same top holes you measured in the last section. Double check that your wasteboard is level, and adjust as needed.

Drew’s Note: Always clamp or screw the material you’re cutting to the Wasteboard Stud Mounts so it doesn’t move.

BUILDING YOUR FRAME PART 3: LEVELING YOUR FRAME AND ATTACHING YOUR MATERIAL

1. Mount the top beam to the wall using your guide marks from Step Two and ensure that it is level. To mount, line up the bottom of the stud mounts with the wall marks you made. Only screw one D2 screw into the top of one side. Level your top beam by holding the other side against the wall, using your 10” mark as a guide. Hold a level against the top edge, and screw in the top of other side when it’s level. Screw in the bottom of the stud mounts.

M2 ASSEMBLY PART 4: MOUNT CHAINS TO FRAME (BAG A AND BAG B)

1. On left side of top beam, measure 6” (35cm) toward center and 1” (2.5cm) from the top or bottom. Insert small A3 nail through loop in last chain link and hammer into that spot. Repeat process on right side, with either both on the top or bottom.

2. Drape chains over the E1 motor sprockets, so they can loop toward the center as shown.

3. Measure about 31” (78cm) on right side chain from nail toward center of top beam. Place A2 sprocket in loop and attach B1 quick Link, with opening facing out. Repeat process on left side.

4. On right side, attach spring and tighten quick link, with link nut facing away from beam.

Drew’s Note: We recommend a friend help connect the spring and each person wear safety goggles during stretching. The chain can snap back causing damage to people and surroundings!

The M2 moves in the X and Y position by using chains connected to the motors. This guide is how to install the chains that came with your M2 on a standard 4’x8’ frame with a 10’ Top Beam. The most important part is that the spring keeps tension on the chains.

Also, the large nail and spacer (A4 and 5) are extra parts for custom frame designs!

5. Stretch out the spring from the right side to attach the other end to the open quick link on left side. Tighten quick links.

M2 ASSEMBLY PART 5: ATTACH M2 TO FRAME

ROLLER BEARING CARRIAGE ROLLER BEARING CARRIAGE

1. Hold M2 sled against the wasteboard near the right chain. Hold it against the frame with your body weight or have a friend help by holding it for you.

2. Take the loose end of one chain and thread through hole in the roller bearing carriage built in Part 1. Insert A1 cotter pin to into second to last chain link to attach.

3. Move M2 to center of Wasteboard and have a friend pull the tension on the opposite chain to around 20” from the nail to the spring. You can pull the chain away from the motor sprocket, pull for more length, and set it back to for the tension to hold, but beware of it pulling! When you have enough slack in the chain, thread through the opposite roller bearing carriage and attach with the other A1 cotter pin into second to last chain link.

Drew’s Note: We recommend wearing safety goggles and having a friend help mount the sled to the frame. The chain can slip off the sprockets, causing the spring to snap and hurt people, pets, and surroundings. It’s also important to insert the cotter pin into the second to last link, for extra safety of the chain attachment, as shown below.

Drew’s Note: Let go of the sled and it should rest against plywood or MDF. Your M2 is ready to calibrate! (Also, don’t forget to attach your bricks, if you waited until it was mounted).

M2 ASSEMBLY GUIDE

1. Using included B2 screws, mount controlbBoard in its case to the wall behind Wasteboard, helps to mount in middle for motor wires to reach.

Drew’s Note: If you’re mounting without case or need to modify for any reason, this is how to attach the top Control Shield to bottom DUE board. Line up the pins as shown and be careful they don’t bend

BUILDING YOUR FRAME PART 6: MOUNT AND CONNECT ARDUINO DUE BOARD AND SHIELD

Drew’s Note: The M2’s brain is an Arduino DUE microcontroller. We recommend mounting the DUE to the wall behind your Wasteboard, but it can be mounted in any safe location where it won’t be stepped on or conflict with the M2 during operation.

With case, wire plugs on bottom.Bottom DUE board, without case (notice how the “DUE” written on the board is up). That is the orientation for this instruction, the bottom power is unused.

Power

Drew’s Note: If your case looks like this above one, it may need to be modified. Note the small power port. You will have to plug in the power with the top of the case off, or cut the hole larger. We appologize for this mistake and it will be fixed in later versions.

Right/Left (X/Y) Motors

Drew’s Note: The X and Y motors move the M2 back and forth on the frame. If one of your motors of your M2 doesn’t move during operation, or the M2 generally moves in a strange direction, the first thing to check are the motor connections. If the wires connecting the X, Y, and Z motors are loose, even a tiny bit, it will cause your M2 to malfunction.

BUILDING YOUR FRAME PART 5: MOUNT ARDUINO DUE BOARD AND SHIELD

2. Plug in wires, USB, and power. The six-pin motor wires go to the motors, using the following diagrams. Connections will only seat in one direction. Ensure connections are secure and use one of the shorter blue wires. Use B3 zip ties for cord maintenance.

Drew’s Note: A high-pitched whine is normal! That means your DUE board is receiving power. It will get louder when connected to a computer. The following steps will explain where the other ends of the cords go.

M2 ASSEMBLY GUIDE

CALIBRATION & OPERATION

After the frame is built and the M2 is assembled, you are ready to use your new CNC!

Drew’s Note: To better understand CNC, we recommend reading through this whole section before beginning the calibration process of the M2. This guide is for using standard bit diameters and does not cover V-bit usage.

EXPERIENCED MASLOW USERSThis section will be covering calibration with Makerverse 1.0.6.

Check out this video on calibration!

You will have to set your Z Step Per Rotation to 472.5 for Easel, by inputing $102=472.5 in the console, the Z-axis is already swapped. You will also have to measure your actual X/Y cuts, the distances between your motors, and the distance from the chain to the wasteboard. The process is explained in the following calibration subsection.

BEGINNER TUTORIALTo use your M2, you will need a digital file, CAM (computer-aided manufacturing) software to create the Gcode program the M2 will follow, and a machine control application to send the Gcode to the M2. Part 2 will explain how to make a cut in Easel a Gcode generator. This tutorial will also show you how to use Makerverse, a machine control software, with a digital .SVG file.

OPERATION & CALIBRATION PART 1: GET A DIGITAL .SVG FILE

1. Digital file: You must have a digital file to CNC with the M2. We suggest a black and white SVG file. There are many files available online and tutorials on how to create them on YouTube!

2. Create a file: You can download an SVG file or create one yourself using Inkscape, found on your flash drive.

OPERATION & CALIBRATION PART 2: USING CAM SOFTWARE

1. CAM software:We suggest using the CAM program Easel to create your Gcode. Create a free Inventables account and login here to use it and here is a link to our EASEL Playlist!

7. Change depth per passThe safest and cleanest way to have a clean cut is to change your depth per pass to half of your bit diameter. Here, we have a 1/4in bit, so we changed our Depth per pass to 0.125 inches. You can leave the other values as they are for now.

8. Arrange:When you create your gcode, your M2 will start cutting your file based on where X,Y both equal zero millimeters (0,0). You can arrange your file to start based on where you home your M2. Either select and move all the parts of your file or click the “shape” tab in the dialog box after selecting your model. Click the bubble in the five part matrix to choose where your M2 will start. The bottom corner of the grid is (0,0), and will correspond with where you set (0,0) home in your Machine Control Application for your M2.

3. POWER:Ensure your M2 DUE Board is plugged into power and the USB to your computer.

Drew’s Note: When connecting your M2 for the first time, be sure to be close to a power source to unplug if anything does not go as planned.

If the X, Y, and Z motors are not plugged in completely to the motors and Arduino DUE Board, the M2 will not follow your commands and will act wonky (like continuing to move when you only told it to move 1 inch).

OPERATION & CALIBRATION PART 3: CALIBRATION AND HOW TO USE THE MACHINE CONTROL APPLICATION MAKERVERSE

1. DOWNLOAD: You need a machine control application (also known as a Gcode sender). We suggest our Makerverse for your M2 and many other CNC machines. It’s based off the open source CNCjs software. Coming soon to the Windows and Apple Stores, you can download it for your Windows, Mac, or Linux computer here: https://makermade.com/m2-resources/

Check out this video on calibration!

2. OPEN MAKERVERSE: Click “allow program” to open. It is pending release in the Windows and Mac App Stores. An account is not required, but you may set one up later.

12. CONFIGURATIONBefore your first cut, you need to verfiy your X and Y scaling. After you set your M2 Home position, jog the Z-axis up 10mm, so it doesn’t drag.

STEP A:Draw an “x” with the marker where the router bit was touching. Then, jog your M2 300mm to the left or right and draw another “x.” Jog your M2 300mm down to move it out of the way and for the next measurement. Measure the exact distance and enter actual X value in the “X Scaling”. The expected width is 300mm.

STEP B:Now, draw an “x” under the bit in the new position. Measure the distance between the top and bottom “x” and enter the actual and expected (300mm) Y values in the Y Scaling.

Before your first cut, repeat steps A and B a few times until your actual and expected XY distance moved is the same.

13. UPLOAD GCODE:Click “upload Gcode” and select the Gcode file you created in Easel.

You’ll know your Gcode loaded correctly when CNCjs displays the paths of the Gcode you loaded! You already set the dimensions and depths in Easel for the M2, so it’s ready to start! We recommend a one foot or one meter square as your first test cut for calibration, set to cut outside the shape path.

14. START:Before you cut, raise the Z-Height 3mm above your print surface (so it doesn’t start touching your material). Put on safety goggles, set your router RPM to the recommended cut speed for the material, manually turn on your router so your bit is spinning, and click “Run” to begin cutting out your project! We recommend running the first cut with the router off to ensure everything is running properly, please finish reading this section before beginning.

Drew’d Note: When your M2 is cutting for the first time, be close to the power source to stop all opperation if something goes awry. After your first test cut, you should measure and compare the real values of your square cut to the values of your Gcode for scaling, described in step 12. Be sure that you set easel’s cut path around the outside of your square, so you can have the correct measurement from the inside edge to inside edge.

15. PAUSE/STOPTo pause or stop the M2, click the “Pause” button on the top bar. Once the M2 is paused, you will be able to stop the project by clicking the “Stop” button next to it. It must be paused before you can stop the project!

16. WORK POSITION:When working on projects, setting and changing your Work Position Home will make using your M2 more fun and efficient.

Once you home your M2 out of the box, we recommend changing your Work Position (0,0) for projects, instead of resetting home every time you are cutting a new project. This will save time and calibration headaches!

For example, to use every part of your 4’x8’ material you can set different work positions each time you cut with your M2. Then you could cut the same project out of different sections of your material!

To set the work position, jog the M2 to the position on your material where you want to begin. Then click the “Zero Out Machine” locator icons for X and Y under Machine Position to set your new Work Home.

Now when you run your M2, you can begin from where you set your temporary home position! We recommend cutting 3 or 4 times and measuring until your cuts are near exact to your Gcode.

You now know how to start making projects on the M2. Happy making!

APPENDIX 1 - TIPS

We recommend attaching a hook to the Top Beam to hold the M2 when not in operation. This can reduce stress on your chains and spring, and give the M2 a safe place to park.

Always wear safety goggles.

Always clamp the material you’re cutting to the Wasteboard Stud Mounts so it doesn’t move during operation. You can also securely attach it to the Wasteboard using screws.

Always raise the Z-Height to 3mm above your print surface before you turn on your router and run your M2.

Never leave your M2 unattended while in operation.

Makerverse nor CNCjs control your router, they only control your M2. You must manually turn your router on and off.

In case of an error always turn off your router before you turn off your M2.

Always remember to turn on your router before clicking “Run” in Makerverse and turn off your router after the M2 is paused, stopped, or has completed the project.

It’s a good idea to make sure you’re behind the waste board when you declamp materials, as they can fall to the ground on your foot. Nobody wants that.

When installing the frame, we recommend a friend help connect the spring and each person wear safety goggles during stretching. The chain can snap back causing damage to self and surroundings.

APPENDIX 2 - TROUBLESHOOTING

Frame / Mechanical IssuesIf your M2 is slanting up or down, check these parts of your frame build:

1. The bottom of your wasteboard should be 12” from the bottom of your footers.

2. The wasteboard should be clamped or screwed onto the stud mounts, to maintain a 15 degree angle.

3. The target distance of the motor offset (from the top of the chain to the top of the wasteboard, should be at least 18” for a 4’x8’ frame.

4. Make sure your wasteboard is as flat as possible.

5. Your frame must be square. Ensure that the stud mount and top beam measurements are symmetrical.

6. Make sure all of the T-nuts, bolts, and screws are tight on your M2 and frame.

7. If your M2 is slanting on different materials, increase the RPM of your router and decrease your cut-per-pass depth. Your bit can pull the M2 sled in different directions based on the depth, bit, and RPM.

Calibration / Digital IssuesIf your M2 is not accurate or slanting, check these calibration settings:

1. Don’t round measurements. If you measure 25.478mm, then input that into Makerverse.

2. Measure the exact size of your wasteboard by hand and set your home in the middle. Input your wasteboard size into Makerverse.

3. When you change a value, the Makerverse UI might not immediately show the change. You can disconnect and reconnect the port to see your changes.

4. Always set your home in the center of your wasteboard and use work offset home. If you constantly change the position of home, your M2 will not be calculate properly.

5. The most important measurements are the distance between motors, motor offset (from chain to top of wasteboard, and the exact size of your wasteboard.
