Rockwell Automation round media thintrunk systems are based on the use of thincable for DeviceNet. The use of thin cablereduces maximum trunk line distances butallows for a more compact and costeffective installation for some applications.Rockwell Automation thin cable outer jacketmaterial is either grey PVC for standardenvironments or yellow CPE for additionalchemical resistance. Thin trunk cable isavailable in a wide variety of configurationsincluding raw spools and both micro andmini cordsets and patchcords. Similar toRockwell Automation thick trunk systems,compatible components include t-ports,DeviceBox, DevicePort, PowerTap, and amultitude of other components andaccessories. Rockwell Automation's round media thicktrunk systems are based on the use ofthick cable for DeviceNet. RockwellAutomation thick trunk cable allowsmaximum trunk line distance and is theoriginal DeviceNet system configuration.Thick trunk cable is available in bulk spoolsor as mini male to mini female cordsets orpatchcords in varying lengths. A wide

KwikLink Heavy Duty Connectors are theoriginal connector style for flat media. Thisrugged industrial connector designincorporates a removable field interface capin a multitude of connection types includingmicro, mini pigtail, cable pigtail, open style,and terminator styles, in addition to splicekits for joining two separate flat media trunksections.

KwikLink General Purpose connectorsprovide a simple low profile two-piececonnector design for less demandingindustrial applications. These micro styleconnectors are offered with an extremelypliable flat cable for maximum ease ofinstallation and cable routing and are ratedfor use in IP67 environments.

ArmorBlock MaXum I/O is alsospecifically designed to provide a directinterface to the KwikLink flat media system.A full complement of accessories isavailable. For complete information onsystem installation and associated details,see Rockwell Automation publication DN-6.7.2 and 1485-IN001A-EN-P.

The KwikLink flat media system provides asimple, modular cabling method with itsflat, 4-wire cable and InsulationDisplacement Connectors (IDCs). Designedto promote up to 50% savings ininstallation costs by offering a drasticreduction in labor and materials, theKwikLink system allows nodes to be addedto the network quickly and easilywithoutsevering the trunkline. Cutting or strippingof the trunkline is eliminated, as is the needfor predetermined cable lengths. KwikLinkoffers maximum simplicity while stillsupporting 64 nodes.

DeviceNet is an open communicationnetwork designed to connect factory floordevices such as photoelectric sensors,inductive proximity sensors, motorstarters,drives, valve manifolds, and simple operatorinterfaces together without interfacingthrough an I/O system. It increases theamount and rate of information flowing fromplant floor devices to control systems, andhas the potential to substantially reducewiring costs. Up to 64 intelligent nodes canbe connected to one DeviceNet network.The ability to remove and replace devicesfrom the network while under power withouta programming tool is a distinct advantageof the DeviceNet network.

The DeviceNet network consists of acabling system that provides both powerand communication to nodes.Rockwell Automation offers a number ofmedia products for device connection andcommunication needs.

KwikLink Lite flat media is an unsheathedcable suitable for IP20 applications. Flatmedia was specially made for InsulationDisplacement technology providing analternate solution to DeviceNet media.

Flat media has a 300V and 4 A rating. It issuitable in commercial and light industrialenvironments (E1 and E2 noiseenvironments according to MICEstandards). This flat media should not beused with shielded cable. Using shieldedcable will leave the shield unterminated,resulting in noise issues and a decrease inthe overall performance level of theunshielded system. This cable should onlybe used with KwikLink Lite connectors.

DescriptionClass 1 (CL1) Cable: Per NECspecifications for a Class 1 circuit (see NECArticle 725), the power source must have arated output of less than 30V and 1000V A.So, based on the size of the flat cableconductors, the maximum current throughthe network must be no more than 8 A. Forapplications requiring 8 A in the field, aClass 1 rated flat cable is available.

The Class 1 KwikLink cable is UL Listed for600V and 8 A at 24V DC. For optimalchemical resilience and superior protectionin harsh environments, KwikLink Class 1cable also features a TPE jacket formaximum toughness with excellentflexibility.

Class 2 (CL2) Cable: For less demandingapplications at lower currents, aPVC jacketed Class 2 cable is available.More flexible than the CL 1 cable, thisdesign adheres to NEC Article 725, whichstates that for a Class 2 circuit, the powersource must have a rated output of lessthan 30V and 100V A. In the case ofDeviceNet, running at 24V, the maximumallowable power is then 100V A/24V or 4 A.Therefore, KwikLink CL 2 cable is rated to 4A at 24V DC. This cable can be used withall flat cable connectors.

Auxiliary Power Cable (CL1): In somecases, it may be desirable to run anauxiliary bus to power outputs (i.e. valves,actuators, indicators). To support such anapplication, a black PVC power cable foruse with KwikLink connectors is provided.The KwikLink power cable is a Class 1cable capable of supplying 24V of outputpower with currents up to 8 A. This cablecan be used with all flat cable connectors.

Allen Bradley KwikLink general purposeconnectors are the next generation of theoriginal KwikLink. The connectors aredesigned to interface drop cables to the flatcable trunkline with optimal plug and playcapability at minimal cost. The KwikLinkgeneral purpose connectors simpletwo piece design results in a low profilehousing and decreases installation time.

The connector snaps onto the flat cable atany point along the trunk. Contact is madewith the cable's four conductors bytightening four screws that drive thecontacts through the cable jacket into theconductors.

These connectors are sealed to IP67requirements and provide a wide workingtemperature range for application flexibility.

KwikLink general purpose connectors,similar to original KwikLink, are designedfor single use only and, once installed,should not be removed from the trunkline.

Splice kits are rated for 8 A at 24VDC (Class 1) and come with all the partsnecessary to join sections of flat media. Kitsinclude a pair of snap on KwikLink modulesfactory joined with Class 1 round cable,two IDC connector bases, and two flatcable end caps. Power Isolation versionsare available to allow separation of powersupplies along the network trunkline. Thispermits the connection of multiple powersupplies to the trunk without mutualinterference.
