RESEARCH PROJECTS/OTHER CREATIVE ACTIVITY1. 2000: University of Toronto: Rosenthal (RA) “Women’s Health Research Network Internet

Resources Project”: This project involved a meta-analysis and collection of Canadian women’s health resources on the Internet for the development of a women’s health page developed by the Women’s Health Research Network, affiliated with the University of Toronto Joint Centre for Bioethics through a grant from the Social Science and Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).

2. 2001: Rosenthal, MS. “Community Ethics: Towards an Ethical Framework.” White Paper, Human Resources Development Canada. This was a research contract that involved an extensive meta-analysis on community care, home care and hospital-at-home. The goals of this analysis were to identify topics of ethical concern to workers in the field of home or community care; identify possible solutions to established problems in the field of home or community care; and to suggest practical ethical guidelines that workers in the field of home or community care can use in the “trenches”. The outcome of this research formed a White Paper and content for an Ethics Roundtable attended by homecare providers across Canada.

3. 2002: Rosenthal, MS. “Women’s Health Consumerism” White Paper. The Ontario Hospital Association. This research was a meta-analysis of women’s health consumerism, which surveyed doctor office visits and health products and prescriptions. This research resulted in a background paper to the Ontario Hospital Association’s membership.

4. 2002: Rosenthal, MS. Tracking Trends: Canadian Healthcare Consumerism from 1988-2002. Whitepaper, funded by PricewaterhouseCoopers, for The Ontario Hospital Association. This research summarized trends from PricewaterhouseCoopers health surveys collected between 1988 through 2002, representing approximately 2000 questions and 25,000 respondents. Subscribers to these surveys included all levels of healthcare providers: health care provider associations, ministries of health within municipal and federal government, NGO’s, regional health authorities and pharmaceutical companies. This data was weighted against 1996 Statistics Canada census information (e.g. province size, community size, gender, age) to adjust for differences in response rates, and the outcome of this research was a Summary Report utilized by subscribers.

5. 2002: Rosenthal, MS. “The Female Health Consumer And Informed Consent”. White Paper, The Ontario Hospital Association. This research explored some of the tensions and problems

surrounding adequate informed consent for female health consumers with respect to gender-related healthcare, such as routine gynecological healthcare, reproductive healthcare, menopausal healthcare, and postmenopausal healthcare. The outcome of this research was a bioethics Background Paper distributed to Ontario hospitals and healthcare workers as a component of their continuing medical education.

Research (Completed, but not funded)1. 1998-1999: The University of Toronto, Rosenthal, (PI) “Socio-Ethical Issues of

Prenatal Testing Literature”: A content analysis of current prenatal testing literature distributed by hospitals and women’s healthcare organizations to pregnant patients, examining the ethical, legal and social implications of this literature, as well as the implications of the absence of such literature. Masters Dissertation Research.

2. 2000-2002: The University of Toronto, Rosenthal, (PI) “Socio-Ethical Issues of Prenatal Counselling”: A qualitative study surveying the quality of verbal counseling that university-educated pregnant women in Toronto received from their prenatal healthcare providers. The main inquiry evaluated what pregnant women were “hearing” when they were being verbally counselled about their prenatal health, and evaluated the ethical, legal and social implications of prenatal counseling, as well as the absence of such counseling. Doctoral Dissertation Research.

3. 2003: The University of Kentucky, Rosenthal, (PI) “Socio-ethical Barriers to Genetic Screening in Medullary Thyroid Cancer”: The purpose of this pilot study was to determine whether the medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) patient who is being screened for the autosomal dominant gene mutation for MTC understands and appreciates the benefits, risks, and potential social harms associated with genetic screening. This research identified key social and ethical barriers to genetic screening with respect to the individual patient and his or her family members. Preliminary research that led to a scored RO1.
