(Audrey Hepburn from Breakfast at Tiffany’s)
Moon river wider than a mile I’m crossing you in style someday
Oh dream maker, you heart breaker Wherever you’re going I’m going your way
Two drifters off to see the world
There’s such a lot of world to see We’re after that same rainbow’s end
Waitin’ ‘round the bend A Huckleberry friend
Moon river and me
Repeat from the beginning

Prayer
We thank You, Father, for the blessing of family where you first sow the
seeds of truth and values. We thank You, Lord, for the male spouses who
are the key players in tonight’s program. Bless their efforts with success
and give them also a desire to be members of the Club in the near future.
We are grateful also for the new members You, Jesus, have blessed our
Club with. We ask that as they come regularly to our Club meetings, they
will experience the joy and satisfaction of fellowship and service above self
in and through Rotary.
We ask for Your Spirit’s guiding presence in all that we think, say or do in
Rotary so that the 4 Way Test that You have led our founding fathers to
pursue, is lived out in a way that glorifies You, O Holy Triune God. Amen.
QUOTE OF THE DAY

while you're down there."

A Few Common Questions
1. Who really is responsible for bringing in new
members?
All of us, equally. The only requirement is that we strictly follow the rules. If we do not, or even just bend them to
accommodate someone, our club history is replete with examples of this failure, which in some cases required years to heal. So all of us are responsible for recruitment, but the
responsibility to follow the rules lie squarely with the President, the Board and the Membership Chairman. This is
not negotiable. While we are at it, it is not correct to call our guests as future members of our club. We must discipline
ourselves on this, as it can exert unfair pressure on the guest, and if the guest is not approved for membership later, it can cause embarrassment on the part of the guest,
and to the club. As a non-relative of mine said, "Control your greed"! !
2. How often should we join sponsorships of Inter-
City (IC) meetings?
Not too often, and preferably much less. Our club has empirical proof that every time we join an IC, our
attendance suffers, unless it is held on the day and venue of our regular meetings. For some reason, our club has not been particularly interested in joining ICs.
3. How often should the club board meet?
Once a month, on a previously scheduled date, unless there is an urgent matter that needs to be discussed by a special meeting. The board meeting is a separate function than that
of a regular meeting. It should therefore not be treated as merely an appendage to the regular meeting. If it is, then
the board does not give due justice to the important items in the agenda.

GOV AMBO BASKETBALL CUP OPENS WITH A BANG by IPP Boone Ongchoco
The highly anticipated Gov Ambo Basketball Cup opened with much fanfare
last September 4, 2010. The event was highlighted by the guest appearance of
PBA players Ronald Tubid, Gary David & Paolo Hubalde.
Our very own IPP Boone of the HOPs & Friends basketball squad led the oath
of sportsmanship involving players from 10 teams and the Globevolleybelles
team led by Lady Dot Gancayco. Special awards were handed
out to the best muse and best team
uniform. The muse of the HOPs &
Friends basketball team, Delayna
Hanopol, ran away with the best
muse trophy as judged by the PBA
players, Gov Ambo and Lady Dot.
The best uniform award went to the
home team from RC Camp Crame.
Opening day winners were: HOPs & Friends
over RC Camp Crame, 88-83 (as RCNMHers
Junjun Tanuan and IPP Boone combined for
56 points), Dream Makers over RCUD, 66-49,
and RC Cubao Central over RC Balintawak,
64-62.
(Breaking news: Last September 11, IPP Boone set the early tourney record
of 46 points in the 98-79 win of the HOPs
& Friends team over the young guns of RC Balintawak. Junjun Tanuan ably supported IPP Boone with 28 points. On
September 18, with Rtn. Junjun and IPP Boone once again leading the way, the HOPs & Friends team defeated RC Timog, 80-73, to keep its unblemished
record intact.)
QCPD Station 9 Signs Continuing Education
Partnership with RCNMH & RI District 3780
by IPP Boone Ongchoco
In its desire to create a more peaceful and productive community,
Quezon City Police District Station 9, located in Anonas, generously offered a
35-seater room equipped with 15 computer units in their police station for the
conduct of continuing education, trainings and seminars not just for the project
beneficiaries of RC New Manila Heights but for RI District 3780 Rotary clubs
as well. Matching the QCPD Station 9 offer, Informatics International College –
Diliman volunteered to teach basic computer literacy courses for free and
committed to facilitate the installation of the local area network and
maintenance of computers and related devices in Station 9.
With these critical elements in place and to ensure the full utilization of
Station 9’s facilities, RCNMH is now
looking into expanding its
“Karunungan at Kabuhayan” Center
project to the Anonas area. More
importantly, Rotarians in District
3780 can now participate in the
program by actively searching for out-
of-school youth and idle residents
willing to take advantage of this
golden opportunity to break away
from the clutches of poverty.
This continuing education partnership was formalized during a
memorandum of agreement signing held on September 14, 2010 during the RC
New Manila Heights club meeting held at St. Elizabeth Seton Hall, Mt. Carmel
Shrine Parish. Parties to the signing include new RCNMH member Lt. Col.
Nick Torre (Station 9 Superintendent), RCNMH IPP Boone Ongchoco (District
3780 Literacy Chair), RCNMH Pres. Baby Allado, AG Boyet Tabao and Rtn.
Tas Millena (Informatics Deputy Managing Director).
RCNMH Inducts New Members by Secretary Badette Redublo
To fulfill Rotary Club of New Manila Height’s endeavor to increase
its membership, 5 new members were inducted last September 14, 2010 at St. Elizabeth Hall, Mt. Carmel Church. All sponsored by IPP Daniel “Boone” Ongchoco, they are: Edward John “Edward” Aquino, Professional Referee of the PBA (Sports), Jeffrey “Jeff” Briones, I.T. Instructor at Informatics (Information Technology), Rosalie “Rhose”Montreal, Special Projects Manager of Phil. Basketball Association (Sports Events Marketing), Edgar “Junjun” Tanuan, Jr., Marketing Consultant also at Informatics (Marketing), and Lt. Col. Nicolas “Nick” Torre III, Police Superintendent of Quezon City Police Department Station 9 (Law Enforcement).
Before the regular meeting, PDG Mar Nery, our in-house trainer,
gave the prospective members an Orientation on Rotary International: its history, its organizational set-up, its membership, and its major projects. They were each furnished a membership kit which include the Rotary Basics and This is Rotary leaflets. They were also given The Horizon, the club’s weekly bulletin which featured the Club’s vision and mission, several articles regarding membership, some of the Club’s projects (e.g., feeding program, End Polio Now campaign), Rotary Information on New Generations and calendar of activities.
During the charging by PDG Hermogenes “Hermie” Jarin, He
emphasized the following responsibilities for each new member:
1. attend weekly meetings 2. if absent, attend make-up classes ( list of schedules of
different club meetings can be found in our weekly bulletin ) 3. pay dues promptly, it may be annually, semi annually, or
monthly 4. full commitment to and active participation in our club’s goals
and projects 5. follow by heart the 4-Way Test and be a model for others 6. Uphold the image of Rotary.
They were then inducted by PDG Mario “Mar” Nery followed by the pinning
of the official Rotary pins by the Club Officers, the welcome
handshake/embrace by the members of the Club and the presentation of
token Rotary keyholders by President Baby.
Our warmest congratulations to the newly-inducted members of RCNMH!
October is Vocational Service Month
It’s time to start preparing for Vocational Service Month, when
Rotarians are encouraged to focus on this important Avenue of
Service. Increase the vocational service knowledge of your fellow
club members by devoting your first October Rotary club meeting to
discussing The Four-Way Test and the Declaration of Rotarians in
Businesses and Professions. This special month is a great opportunity
to begin planning vocational activities for the entire year, including
awards and community projects that raise awareness of Rotarians’
commitment to ethics in business.
Tips for member retention
By Arnold R. Grahl , Rotary International News -- 26 August 2010
Make Rotary fun.
Travel together to club meetings and projects – or take a club
trip together.
Form a hiking fellowship to get active outside of weekly
meetings.
Go out to Sunday brunch with a group of members.
Find out what gets a member excited about Rotary.
Do a hands-on project instead of the regular meeting once a
month.
Identify a signature project -- one the club is known for
throughout the community.
Create a mentor committee, and offer three-year mentoring to
new members.
Develop a buddy system, pairing up a new member with an
existing member.
Designate someone to round up members who haven't
participated in a while and drive them to the club's meetings or
events.
Plan outings to involve new Rotarians and their families.
Invite families to club meetings.
Promote the practice of younger members introducing other
younger members.
Organize a New Generations club to target younger
professionals.
Oplan Linis Kontra Dengue part 2 by Interactors at P. Bernardo High School by Jalline Pebres
Concerned by the increased number of dengue cases in Quezon City,
President Jalline Pebres of the Interact Club at P. Bernardo High School
collaborated with the Red Cross Youth (RCY), Supreme Student Government
(SSG), Boys and Girls Scout of the Philippines, and the English Club to do a
clean-up drive and dengue spray in the school grounds.

Brooms in hand, ready to clean up Interactors in full force despite the early call time
A short program before the activity featured a resource person from QC Red Cross
educating the students about how to prevent dengue and what to do when infected.
The students then proceeded to the cleaning of the school grounds. The staff of
Service Projects Dir. Josie Ang from Barangay Horseshoe sprayed around the
perimeter of the school. “I’m so happy that this project is successful and I am thankful to
those who joined in the project. This is a big thing that I have done to my beloved school.”
PBA Players Grace our English Enhancement and Personality Development (EEPD) Workshop
By PP Boyet Alfonso
IPP Boone Ongchoco scheduled a surprise visit by PBA players last
Saturday. The students had fun as San Miguel team players Mick Penisi and Alex
Cabagnot joined in the day’s word game Taboo, posed for pictures and signed
autographs.
The EEPD program this year is being undertaken on a much broader scale
with the participation of about 60 students and 15 volunteer-Rotaractors from
Informatics Diliman, Cainta, and Marikina as moderators. Occasionally, program
overall coordinator Nikki Alfonso’s Ateneo classmates and co-workers at QTV,
drop by to join in the activities.
Sessions are held every Saturday, starting at 1:30 pm at the P. Bernardo
High School for 2 hours but these inevitably extend up to 5:00 pm as the students
and moderators enjoy the activities with gusto.
The objective of the program is to provide public school students the
opportunity to attain a very good level of proficiency in verbal English, i.e., to be
comfortable in speaking the English language. The students are made to converse in
English in a setting of interesting, happy interactive activities – not only to motivate
them to participate but, more importantly, to sustain their interest until the end of
the school year. The sessions are structured and broken down into 4 parts, namely:
Words of the Day (example : déjà vu, clique, synergy) – Students are given
the meaning of the words in English and in Pilipino. Then they are asked to
use each word in a sentence.
Warm-Up – The class is divided into smaller groups, about 8 each, and
made to work on an activity (for instance an activity intended to show how
cooperation and camaraderie within the group leads to superior results).
Main Activity, Group Dynamics – During one session, the group activity
was “Stranded in an Island” : They are asked to make believe that they are
stranded in an island and each member is asked to name one item they
would bring to the island for the group’s survival and why. They then
brainstorm on the responses of the group members.
Round-Up – Each group presents to the whole class what they came up
with during the main activity
Though structured, sessions and activities are varied from time to time.
There are plans for the students to visit the set of “Eat Bulaga” or observe an actual
Call Center. In past sessions, film clips like Cirque de Soleil and The Secret were
shown.
The program encourages groups to be formed spontaneously – natural
group mates – so they continue speaking English outside of the sessions. This was
found to be very effective. Of course, the basic rule is not to make fun of anyone
having difficulty in expressing one’s self in English.
When the program was conceptualized and implemented in 2007-2008 by
Nikki Alfonso, PP Boyet Alfonso’s daughter (during his term as president) the
program was simply meant to improve verbal English language skill and the many
benefits such skill brings. Within the year, the program evolved to include also
value formation, objective setting, and attitudinal changes.
The school authorities noticed the big improvement in the confidence level
of that first batch so they requested for its continuation with full support from the
Principal and the teachers. Nikki started producing a manual for the program to be
used as a template. This is based on her experience two years ago and the current
progress and development in collaboration with the current moderators as co-
authors.
Because of the impact it has had on students and moderators alike, IPP
Boone Ongchoco, as this year’s District Chairman for Literacy, has expanded it into
a district-wide program for Rotary Clubs, for implementation in their respective
adopted public schools using our template.
