2012 Summer Programs Team

M-NCPPC’s Department of Parks and Recreation offers you plenty of options. Choose from more than 565 camp sessions, 83 summer playgrounds and 15 summer teen centers throughout Prince George’s County. You may mix and match so that youth attend camp sessions some weeks, and Summer Playground programs or Xtreme Teens Center programs other weeks. Summer Camps are structured, full-day and half-day camps. The variety of camps offered includes general recreation camps that feature arts & crafts, sports & swimming, and innovative specialty camps that feature nature, visual and performing arts, computers, sports, and more. Most camp sessions are two weeks long and offer before and after care to help working parents with safe childcare options. Registration for Prince George’s County residents begins at 9 am, Saturday, February 25. Registration for residents of all other jurisdictions begins at 9 am, Saturday, March 3. Summer Playgrounds and Summer Xtreme Teen Centers are open to residents of Prince George’s County only. These supervised drop-in programs operate from Monday, June 25 through Friday, August 3. Playgrounds are for children ages 6-12; teen centers operate for youth ages 13-17. Registration begins March 30.

SUMMER DAY CAMP REGISTRATION INFORMATION

PAYMENT & PAYMENT SCHEDULING OPTIONSYou may pay in full or make a $50 deposit (per camper, per session) whenyou register, and schedule the remaining payments. The $50 deposit isnon-refundable and non-transferable.

Scheduled payments must be paid in full by June 1 for sessions that beginon or before July 9; or by July 1 for sessions that begin after July 9. (June1 is the last date personal checks will be accepted.) You may pay yourbalance before the due date; when paying on line or using the automatedtouch-tone telephone system, your payment will be shown as a credit toyour account. On the due date, the system will automatically apply thatcredit to the balance.

Register in person at any M-NCPPC staffed facility in PrinceGeorge’s County. All walk-in registrations during the week prior to camp start date must be processed at the offering facility, and are subject to supervisor approval.

WHAT (R), (NR) AND (IA) MEAN(R) means Residents of Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties; (NR) means Non-Residents of all other jurisdictions; and (IA) meansresidents living in the Impact Area of the Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex. Impact Area residents receive a fee reduction for camp programs at the Complex. Call 301-583-2400, TTY 301-583-2483for information about the Impact Area.

EXTENDED CARE INFORMATION• You must first be registered in the corresponding day camp before registering for extended care. (Not all camps offer extended care.)

• Please complete extended care registration at least one week prior to camp start date.

• You must pay in full at the time you register for extended care. • Extended care registration is NOT available via SMARTlink telephone.

CANCELLATION POLICYRegistrants are entitled to a 100% refund (or SMARTlink credit) in theevent that M-NCPPC cancels a camp.

CHECK POLICYChecks returned for insufficient funds will be assessed a $20 fee by M-NCPPC, in addition to your bank charges. NO starter checks accepted.

FEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAMFee assistance is available (subject to approval) for Prince George’s Countyresidents only. For complete information and application forms, stop byyour local community center or obtain the forms on line atwww.pgparks.com>About Parks and Recreation>Fee Assistance. Applica-tions must be processed no later than 3 weeks prior to start of program.

LATE PAYMENT PENALTIESIf you’ve made a deposit and full payment is not received by the due date,your space may be forfeited and you will lose your $50 deposit. If thecamp accepts your late payment, you will be assessed an additional $20late payment fee.

WAIT LISTSIf a camp session is full, you may put your name on a wait list and registerfor another camp during that session. If a spot opens at your first-choicecamp, upon your request your registration will be transferred to the first-choice camp without penalty.

WITHDRAWAL & REFUND POLICYWithdrawal and refund requests for fully paid or partially paid registrations are subject to a $50 non-transferable, non-refundablewithdrawal fee per child/per session. Withdrawal and refund requestsfrom extended care (with continued enrollment in associated camp) willbe assessed a 20% fee. NO EXCEPTIONS. Withdrawals from sessions must be processed by the facility offering the program.

EXTENDED CARE OPTIONS• Supervised, non-structured playtime before and after camp session hours are available for many camp sessions. Extended care sessions are listed with each camp session in his brochure. Not all camps offer extended care. Please check activity descriptions.

• All disability accommodation requests (inclusion services) for extended care must berequested at least two weeks prior to the start date of the camp.

LATE PICKUP FEE POLICYA late fee of $5 per camper for every 15minutes late (or portion thereof) will beassessed for campers who are not picked up bythe program’s scheduled closing time. Paymentis due when you pick up your camper. Werecognize that emergencies arise and requestthat parents call the campsite if they aredelayed for any reason; however, the late feestill will be assessed.

SUMMER DAY CAMP INFORMATION AND POLICIES

Swimming Trips Policy – SWIMMER DESIGNATIONSPlease read the following information carefully prior to selecting your child’s swimmingdesignation during registration.

To help ensure the safety of your child while he or she is participating in swimming pool tripsthis summer, you will be asked to designate him or her as a “Non-Swimmer” or “Swimmer”during registration. Use the following descriptions as a guide for selecting your child’sappropriate swimming designation.

NON-SWIMMER:Non-swimmers have limited or no previous experience with swimming pools or other aquaticenvironments. They are unable to independently swim distances of 20 yards or more and/orcannot swim or play comfortably in water that is above their heads.

If you designate your child as a “Non-Swimmer” he or she will be restricted to chest-deepwater on swim trips.

SWIMMER:Swimmers have previous experience with swimming pools or other aquatic environments.They can swim a minimum of 20-yards and can swim or play comfortably in water that isabove their heads.

If you designate your child as a “Swimmer” he or she will be required to pass a swim testeach time he or she visits a pool. The swim test requires participants to swim a minimum of20 yards in water more than five feet deep and continuously tread water for a minimum of20 seconds.

Upon successful completion of the required swim test, childrendesignated as “Swimmers” will have full access to both shallowand deep-water areas of the pool during swimming trips.Designated “Swimmers” who do not pass the required swim test will be re-designated as “Non-Swimmers” and restricted to chest-deep water.

If your child’s swimming abilities change between the time youregister for a program and the start of the program, pleasecontact staff, you will need to sign a new form.

SUMMER DAY CAMP REQUIRED FORMS PROCESS

To comply with the state of Maryland’s Youth Camp Standards, The Department of Parks and Recreation has instituted a new, streamlined process for completing and collecting required forms. It is theparent/guardian’s responsibility to deliver all necessary, completed formsto each program location. Children may not attend any session withoutcompleted forms on site. NO EXCEPTIONS.

If you have any questions or need any help before or during registration,please call the Customer Service Help Desk at 301-699-CALL(2255); TTY 301-699-2544. Información en Español: 301-445-4509.

DURING REGISTRATION…Once you’ve selected the program you want for your child, a pop-upscreen will appear listing 8 prompts which you are required to answer inorder to complete a registration. The prompts are:

• Emergency Contact NamePlease provide the full name of the person to contact in case of an emergency.

• Emergency Contact Phone NumberPlease provide the phone number of the emergency contact.

• Physician’s NamePlease provide the name of your child’s physician.

• Physician’s Phone NumberPlease provide the physician’s phone number.

• Is the participant a swimmer/non-swimmer?Please indicate whether the child is a swimmer or a non-swimmer. (See page 4.)

• Has the participant been immunized?Your options are: (a) Yes – student in a Maryland public or private school ; (b) Yes – student is home-schooled or was in a school other than in the state of Maryland school; (c) No.

If you answer Yes – and the student was in a Maryland public or private school, you will not need to complete a Maryland DHM Immunization Certificate.

If you answer No or Yes – the student is home-schooled or was in a school other than the state of Maryland, then the Maryland DHM Immunization Certificate will print out with your Day Camp Confirmation Receipt. This Certificate must be completed and returned to staff prior to your child’s participation in the day camp program.

• Are there any health issues?Please answer Yes or No. Participants who have health issues such as allergies or other illness, take medication (prescription or over-the-counter), or use emergency medical devices such as inhalers or Epi-pensshould answer Yes. The Health-Medication Form will be printed with your Day Camp Confirmation Receipt at the end of the registration. Thisform must be completed and returned to staff prior to your child’s participation in the day camp program. If you answer No, you will not need to complete any additional health forms.

• Date of last Tetanus or DPT vaccinationPlease fill-in the month/year (example: 01/2012) when the child last received a Tetanus or DPT vaccination. This is a requirement of the Stateof Maryland.

When you’ve completed this information once, and if you want to registerthe child for additional camp sessions during the summer, these fields willautomatically populate with your answers.

Once your registration and transaction are complete, the following itemswill print out for your convenience:• A Day Camp Confirmation Receipt• A Summer Day Camp Authorization Form (This form authorizes who may pick up your child during a camp session, and must be returned to camp staff prior to participation in the program.)

• And, depending upon your answers to the prompts, the Health-Medication Form or Maryland DHM Immunization Certificate.

PLEASE NOTE: For 2012, the streamlined forms system is not available via SMARTlink automated, touch-tone telephone registration. If youchoose to register via SMARTlink automated, touch-tone registration,Customer Service Help Desk staff will contact you about completion ofrequired forms.

THERAPEUTIC RECREATION ANDINCLUSION SERVICES

WHAT IS INCLUSION? Inclusion within The Maryland-National Capital Park and PlanningCommission’s Prince George’s County Department of Parks andRecreation means that individuals with disabilities are welcome toparticipate in the same recreation programs and activities as their non-disabled peers. Reasonable accommodations may be provided to enablean individual’s successful participation in a program. Certain minimumeligibility requirements, such as age and level of participation, must bemet in order to participate.

WHAT ARE EXAMPLES OF DISABILITY ACCOMMODATIONS?Accommodations that may be available to promote successful participationin programs include: the provision of an enhanced staff/participant ratio;use of companions; sign interpretation for the deaf and hard of hearing;adaptive activity equipment and/or supplies; accessible transportationwhen transportation is provided as part of an activity or program; andassistance with health services that do not require medical training.

HOW DO I REQUEST A DISABILITY ACCOMMODATION?All disability accommodation requests for camps, including extended care,must be indicated on the Health-Medication Form, noted on theindividual’s SMARTlink account, and requested at least two weeks prior tothe start date of the camp.

WHAT ARE THE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR SUCCESSFUL INCLUSION?The same minimum requirements that apply to a person without a disability also apply to a person with a disability. These include:• Meeting the program’s age and registration requirements; • Following the rules of conduct (with or without reasonable accommodation);

• Voluntary participation (Note: Recreation programs and activities are voluntary in nature. Participation will be encouraged and aided, but not forced.);

• Meeting necessary level of participation with or without reasonable accommodations (participant will engage in scheduled activities for the majority of the program time);

• Ability to use a consistent form of communication to indicate basic needs and follow simple directions; and

• Ability to function, with assistance, as a member of a group of 12 or more people.

WHAT SERVICES ARE NOT PART OF AN INCLUSIVE PROGRAM?Inclusion services do not include the following:• Provision of separate program activities• Exception (with or without accommodations) to minimum compliance with program rules and regulations established for safety purposes.

• Hiring, selection, or guaranteed assignment of a specific staff member;• Individualized therapy within a program; and• Provision and/or purchase of personal custom devices.

IS AN INCLUSIVE RECREATION PROGRAM THE RIGHT CHOICEAND/OR EXPERIENCE?Observe the program first-hand and ask yourself…• If school-aged, do your child’s current classroom activities or goals prepare him/her for an inclusive recreation experience?

• Has the individual shown an interest in the program activity or subject matter?

• Is he/she comfortable and able to function appropriately, with or without assistance, in inclusive environments (malls, restaurants, parks, etc.)?

WHAT ARE THERAPEUTIC RECREATION PROGRAMS FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES?The Prince George’s County Department of Parks and Recreation offersalternative choices (for Prince George’s County residents only) through itsprovision of specialized therapeutic recreation activities for individualswith disabilities. Patrons have a wide range of abilities and special needs;some prefer and benefit from participating in specialized programsdesigned specifically for participants with disabilities. • Are there any health issues?Please answer Yes or No. Participants who have health issues such as allergies or other illness, take medication (prescription or over-the-counter), or use emergency medical devices such as inhalers or Epi-pens should answer Yes. The Health-Medication Form will be printed with your Day Playground/Teen Center Confirmation Receipt at the end of the registration. This form must be completed and returned to staff prior to your child’s participation in the program. If you answer No, you will not need to complete any additional health forms.

grounds offer fun activities for Prince George’s County residents only, ages 6-12.

Children are free to come and go during the day, and to attend some days and

not others. Extended Care is not offered. The fee is $40 per child, whether a child

attends six hours a day for all six weeks, or select days and times only. Optional

field trips and special events may be offered for additional fees. Children must

meet the minimum age of 6 by August 31, 2012. These drop-in programs operate

Mondays-Fridays, 9 am-3 pm, June 25 until August 3. All sites are closed July 4.
