As 1950s rolled over the far blue horizon, G. Ramanathanwas equally active as before, composing music for as many asseven movies in two years (1956-57), a creditable recordanyone would be proud of as a music composer. Full marks tothe ace composer Ramanathan!

The movies included‘Naan Petra Selvam’ (1956),‘Ambikapathi’, ‘Chakravarthi Thirumagal’, ‘Aaravalli’,‘Manamagan Thevai’ ‘Karpukkarasi’, ‘Puthumai Pitthan’and‘Vanangamudi’(all made in 1957). Quite an achievement, that!

‘Aaravalli’ was produced in Modern Theaters by the Salem-based movie mogul T. R. Sundaram and was a success mainlybecause of the comedian A.Karunanidhi and his team and thecomedy songs. The three songs filmed around them singingwith off-screen voices of noted singers Tiruchi Loganathan andSirgazhi Govindarajan became hits and are still popular aftermore than half century. Of course, the credit goes to G.Ramanathan who composed these songs in pure classicalCarnatic music ragaswithout mixing them with ragas of otherschools.

Earlier, there had been a movie ‘Aaravalli Sooravalli’ withthe same story released in 1946, produced by SouthernTheatres, directed by forgotten filmmaker C. V. Raman andwritten by G. S. Bhagavathar (Ramanathan’s elder brother)and shot at Modern Theaters.

Interestingly, Ramanathan had composed the music forthat film too, and it had the well-known actors of the day V. A.Chellappa and Serukalathur Sama, supported by P. SSivabhagyam, Thavamani Devi and others. The film floppedand nobody remembers it today.

The next version under review, called merely ‘Aaravalli’,wasshot at Modern Studios and directed by Krishna Rao whowas on its regular pay-roll.

The story is about seven sisters, and is said to have somelinks the Hindu epic Mahabharatham. Two elder sisters (G.Varalaskhmi and Mohana) rule the kingdom enslaving princes, kings, warriors and such persons of valour having won overthem by asking them to solve puzzles and perform deeds whichare almost impossible to do (like giving a small metal ring toa big made-man like Bhima and asking him to go through it)! Those who lose are treated as slaves and forced to do menialtasks like sweeping floors and milk blind donkeys! The Pandavahero Bhima (R. Balasubramaniam) goes to take up the challengeand loses because, with his bulk, he cannot slip through a smallmetal ring!

A young prince (S.G. Easwaran) takes up the challenge andone of the seven sisters (Mynavathi) falls in love with him. Howwith her help the prince wins the contests, sets right theinjustice done to the many enslaved princes and also bringsback the dead ones forms the rest of the film.

G. Varalakshmi, the multi-lingual star, plays a main role inher characteristic vigour and verve. She was of the samemould in real life too and had slapped even senior actresses onthe set shocking everyone around! Mohana as the youngersister was active for a few years but soon faded away. Notmany remember her today.

Lyrics were by Pattukottai Kalyanasundaram, andKa. Mu.Sheriffwhile the music, of course, was composed by G.Ramanathan. He sang the title song too off screen.

Easwaran was a cousin of Gemini Ganesh for whom heworked as manager. For some reasons he left him and decidedto try his hand at acting. He did not meet with much success, faded away, and involved himself in buying and selling movieareas as movie mediator.

The film also had movie and stage starV. Gopalakrishnan, comedians Kaka Radhakrishnan, A. Karunanidhi, T.P.Muthulakshmi, M, Saroja, ‘Jayakodi ‘ Natarajanand others.

(One of the slave milking a blind donkey was a handsomeyoung man who soon broke into limelight under the name C. L.Anandan, playing the hero in movies like ‘Vijayapuri Veeran’andothers. A Muslim by birth, he was a group dancer in ModernTheatres and he and his friend (noted choreographer of the day)Salim used to move around small towns and villages nearSalem in an open truck dancing and collecting money. In lateryears, Anandan played the villain roles in some of the moviesof Muktha V. Srinivasan and faded away soon. He is bestremembered for his performance in the Citadel Studios film,‘Vijayapuri Veeran’.)

The film fared well at the box office and the main reason wasthe songs. There were nearly 8 to 9 songs, and the three comedysongs became hits.

More about these comedy songs follows. (To be continued)

Sir, Govindan Street which connects North Usman Road and G.N.Chetty Road has a steady flow of vehicular traffic. A concreted stretchof about 100 meters of the road closer to G.N. Chetty Road junction hasbeen in a badly damaged condition for over two years. It not only causeshindrance to motorists but also throws up lots of dust when a vehiclepasses, thereby causing pollution in the neighbourhood. I appeal toCorporation officials to take remedial action.—S. Rajagopalan, T.Nagar

LETTERS TO THE EDITORConcreted section of Govindan Street in bad condition

Kudos to Mambalam Times for its diversity innews content

Sir, Thanks to your pioneering efforts, a number of neighbourhoodnewspapers have sprouted in Chennai. However few can match thediversity of your editorial content. Though it is common forneighbourhood newspapers to carry only local events and civic issues,it is quite rare to read reports like ‘CB-CID to probe youth’s allegedtorture in police custody’ as had appeared in Mambalam Times lastweek. It is in this context I wish to congratulate Mambalam Times forits bold approach to report such matters which are equally a part andparcel of neighbourhood news. The latest report reveals that the probeby the CB-CID has confirmed the involvement of three police personnelin the sexual torture of the youth. While the police sometimes have toresort to ‘third’ degree methods to ferret out the truth, this is a dastardlyact and the offenders need to be suitable punished to set an exampleto other officials in the department. – K. Harihar, 20, BrindavanStreet, West Mambalam
