Dear Members,

It has been almost a year since I accepted the position at Dunham Woods Riding Club. Time flies doesn’t it? This past year went by so quickly.

When I look back over the past year, it has been exciting to see all the improvements along the way. We upgraded our wine list to include many more offerings and varietals. We expanded our glass pour selection. We also made an effort to change our menu more often with more variety. Our infrastructure was improved with three new air conditioning units. In addition, we put in a new accounting system with new computers and a new POS system. I am sure you have all noticed our two completely rehabbed bathrooms upstairs; quite impressive!

We now have music on the patio to enjoy along with the numerous wine tastings, caricaturist and other continued offerings at the club.

Our organic garden was a wonderful addition to get back to basics and a healthy lifestyle. It was well received and we plan on expanding it this year. New seedlings have been started and will be ready to plant soon. We will have more offerings as farm-to-plate doesn't get any closer than our own back door.

These are just a few of the many things the board members, committees and entire staff have done over the past year to enhance your experience at the club and function at a high level. We thank each and everyone of our past and present board and committee mem-bers. There is no payment for a Labor of Love. Their dedication and wanting to create a better environment should be commended. A thank you goes along way as an expression of appreciation.

Let’s talk about our staff. We elevated Jordin Robinson to the position of Food & Beverage Manager; a well deserved promotion. We hired Anahi Perez as our Director of Catering. And lastly, many of you know Kasi Cruz. She will be graduating soon in the hospitality field. She will be an integral part of our team moving forward after she graduates. Without the wonderful culinary team led by Rufino

Ramirez and all the service staff in the front and back of the house, we would have not been able to accomplish so much. From Nancy Saucedo and Melissa Rinker in the office our entire team has been

an integral part of all the improvements.

I often equate success of a team to that of a car. (I do have some strange analogies). The car can only run efficiently if every single piece of the car is performing. How long and how far can a car go missing a tire, an engine, a gas tank, a steering wheel? Strange as it may sound, every single individuals role is important to the outcome. We succeed as a team. I thank each and everyone’s effort over the past year to enhance the experience here at Dunham Woods Riding Club. The boards, committees and our entire staff have accomplished quite a bit over the past year.

The Australian Tennis Open did not fail to surprise us producing aged rivals, ancient for tennis, back in the finals of a Grand Slam in both the men’s and women’s events. These are some of the most athletic and gracious players on the circuit. Many major magazines and newspapers reported in multiple pages on these finals with “age and time” in their headlines. New “norms” are developing in the sport.

Except for a few Polar Vortexes in 2016, we have had great weather for paddle tennis season; no snow shoveling. Our gas bill is the lowest ever and some members are even playing in shorts. But the “Fat Lady” has not sung yet so keep out those Arctic warm-ups.

Tadd Maltby, our paddle tennis pro, is in full swing with our Junior members and Ladies’ group. He has provided a spark to the Paddle Tennis Program. Our Ladies’ group currently has 12 members that attend double practice options every Monday between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. The team won its first match against Chicago Highlands Club last month.

The Junior members meet on Sunday afternoons from now until the end of April for paddle, pizza & fun from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The kids like the sport and are improving rapidly. Tadd provides a rotational system of who gets to play their choice of music on the “boom box.” He has been surprised how many like country music. If you are not signed up for one of these programs, please contact Tadd at (630) 456-3064 or email him at [email protected].

PLEASE NOTE: The March Paddle Tennis Mixer with Geneva Golf Club has been cancelled due to conflicts and will be rescheduled for the early 2017 Fall Season.

I would like to thank the members for picking up the paddle tennis balls, paddles, cups, drinks, etc., around the courts. The appearance is much improved! In addition, I would like to remind the members to turn off all the lights (in Corky’s and on the paddle courts), paddle court heaters, televisions and fireplace before you leave. And, if you have rearranged the furniture, etc., please put everything back as you found it. Don’t forget to sign chits for paddle tennis accessories, liquor and refreshments so that we may continue to provide this convenience for the members.

Reminders, Tips & Tidbits

The volley is an important stroke in paddle tennis when you are serving and coming to the net or you are the server’s partner at the net. In both cases, you should be ready with a backhand grip. If you are at the net, position yourself where the served ball lands in the receiver’s court, crouch down low with your paddle in front of your face. This will allow you to protect your body and still see the ball if it comes at you. You are only responsible for a small portion of the court while your serving partner must cover 70% or more. Watch the motion of the receiver to try to determine if he is going to drive or lob so that you can be ready to back up if the receiver hits a deep lob.

Meet The Staff

We all know him. We all love him. He’s our friendly neighborhood maintenance man, Antonio Serriteno. Have you ever wondered how 150 of those gold chivari chairs get from the basement to the Gray Room? He’s your man, Dunham’s very own superhero in my opinion. I really don’t envy him. Those chairs are heavy. Perhaps our staff slogan should be “Dunham . . . No gym membership needed,” but that’s beside the point. Outside of work, Antonio is one of the most thoughtful men I know. He spent this past January fixing all those little things around the house for his wife. What a guy! When he’s not doing work for friends, family or fellow coworkers (who need help moving half their furniture from their parents’ basement to their apartment), Yes, it was me! I’m the mooch, he always makes sure to spend quality time with his two boys. We could use a few more Antonio’s in our lives Every day I don’t have to carry a stack of chairs, I appreciate him all the more. Since we’re on a superhero theme, I’ll talk about someone whom I feel is another one of Dunham’s champions, Fawn Felski. As most of you know, Fawn is one of our bartenders and … wait, wait, wait! Can we just take a moment to appreciate how cool the name Fawn Felski is? I’ve got chills. They’re multiplying. Okay, back on track. Other than being one of our weekend bartenders, Fawn runs the kitchens at Schaumburg High School. She is responsible for feeding hundreds of teenagers a day. Hundreds! I don ’t know how she doesn’t run out of food. To top it off, despite having been at work all day on Fridays, she still manages to bake an occasional sweet treat for the staff to share. It has become so routine that we are fairly disappointed if she is unable to bring anything. Especially Dale, he loves his sweets. Fawn is good for more than baked goods though. Her overall positive attitude and weekly anecdotes are enough to set the staff up for success. Fawn may not work every day for us but in a pinch we can always count on her to save the day and she always does it with a smile.
