Welcome to Lyme Regis

Nestled in an area of outstanding natural beauty, the town sits at the heart of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site where the rugged coastlines of West Dorset and East Devon meet.

The picturesque town is largely unspoilt, retaining a quaint charm with cobbled streets, ancient buildings, and independent shops, cafes and galleries.

Visitors can enjoy the beautiful beaches, discover the rich geological and natural history, explore the stunning rural hinterland, and soak up the atmosphere at one of the many events.

A range of attractions and a packed calendar of events will keep you entertained, whatever the time of year, and the town is ideally placed to explore what the rest of Dorset and Devon has to offer.

Whether you’re looking for a fun family holiday, a relaxing weekend for two, an active group holiday, a cultural getaway, or an educational visit, you can be sure to find something to attract you to Lyme Regis.

Finding accommodation is easy, with a comprehensive guide of places to stay on pages 30 to 47, and a useful calendar of events for 2016 on page 27.

The seaside town of Lyme Regis is a sparkling resort for all seasons; the spring flowers along the River Lym, the warm seas of the summer, the changing colours of autumn in the surrounding

countryside, and the waves crashing over the Cobb in the winter, all invite you to return.

Lyme Regis is the perfect place for family holidays, drawing people back year after year to relive nostalgic memories. Exciting activities and attractions will keep the whole family

entertained all-year-round, while the simple pleasures of sandcastle-building, rockpooling, and mackerel fishing make Lyme the ideal setting to take a well-earned break.

A full programme of events extends beyond the main summer season, giving Lyme its reputation as a ‘town for all seasons’.

The Lyme Lunge kick-starts the year, the Fossil Festival in April celebrates the world-famous Jurassic Coast, and May’s Jazz and Blues Festival showcases the best of live music. Lifeboat Week and Regatta and Carnival are the highlights of the summer, followed in September by Guitars on the Beach. A breathtaking fireworks display and beach bonfire in November leads into Yuletide Lyme and the town’s spectacular Christmas lights’ display.

The Art Deco Regent Cinema shows family films, while the Marine Theatre offers performances with young audiences in mind.

Children can fish for crabs from the harbour or take a trip out to the bay with the local fishermen. Dinosaurs are ready to be discovered at the museum, at Dinosaurland and in the many shops in the town. Fossils are waiting to be found on the beaches, best discovered on an organised walk.

Mini golf and table tennis are available in the seafront gardens, and a short walk away is the pirate-themed play park at Anning Road.

Lyme Regis is famous for its geology, fossils and its unparalleled role in the birth of the earth sciences. The blue lias cliffs are a treasure trove of the remains of marine creatures

from the Jurassic seas of 180 million years ago.

The three Philpot sisters came to live in the town in the early 1800s and formed a collection of local fossils, including many unknown species. They took on a young girl from the town, Mary Anning, who discovered the first complete Plesiosaurus in 1824.

Now one of Lyme’s most famous citizens, Mary established herself as a renowned palaeontologist and along with Buckland, Conybeare and De La Beche, played a pioneering role in the birth of this new science.

The Philpot museum, the legacy of the three sisters, houses a fascinating collection recording the Jurassic history of Lyme Regis.

Now a gateway to the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, fossilised remains of sea creatures can be found on Lyme’s beaches, particularly to the east of the town. Fossil hunters should equip themselves with boots, hammer, goggles and the tide tables, as it is easy to get cut off by the incoming tide.

Organised fossil walks are a more interesting and safer way to explore the coast and learn more about the fascinating creatures which lie beneath.

Lyme Regis has always had a fascination for artists, writers and dramatists, a lure which has drawn creative people here for centuries. Today, culture-seekers will find a wealth of art galleries,

theatre, cinema, music, festivals and literature in a wide range of genres.

The town’s spectacular scenery and position overlooking Lyme Bay provides the perfect backdrop for a vibrant cultural scene, inspiring famous artists and authors to create some of their most renowned works.

Among them are authors GK Chesterton, JRR Tolkien, PG Wodehouse, Beatrix Potter and Jane Austen.

Lyme resident John Fowles was inspired to write ‘The French Lieutenant’s Woman’, adapted for film in 1982 featuring the classic scene of Meryl Streep on the Cobb.

The work of visual artists JMW Turner, James McNeill Whistler and Sir Laurence Whistler was influenced by the ever-changing light and scenery of the area.

Today, the town has a buzzing arts community and an abundance of galleries and studios. Festivals include ArtsFest, Jazz and Blues, Busking, Folk Weekend, and Big Mix. Regular art exhibitions are held at the Town Mill Malthouse and Galleries and at the museum.

The Marine Theatre offers a wide variety of performances, from contemporary music to opera, children’s entertainers to lectures.

The Regent Cinema show a range of cultural productions, including ballets, operas and plays, screened live from places such as the Royal Opera House and the London Coliseum.

Lyme Regis attracts artisans of the highest calibre whose work can be found in shops and galleries around the town. Craftspeople can also be seen

creating their masterpieces in their working studios.

The town prides itself on its thriving creative scene, with potters, jewellers and glassmakers working alongside clothing designers, sculptors and specialist food and drink producers.

Much of this artisan culture can be found in Coombe Street and at the Town Mill. In Coombe Street you will find original handmade gifts, rare knitwear, photography, one-off recycled hats, model-making and a rustic bakery.

Turn the corner into the Town Mill to find a silversmith’s studio, a potter, art galleries, a seamstress, a cheesemonger and a micro-

brewery. The 700-year-old restored working watermill at the heart of the courtyard grinds organic wheat into wholemeal flour.

Elsewhere in the town are numerous galleries, fossil and rock shops, a teddy bear maker, skilled baristas, jewellery-makers and top-class chefs and food producers offering fresh, local goods.

During ArtsFest, paintings, sculptures and other work can be seen in unusual places throughout the town, while artists open the doors to their studios for the public to wander in.

AROUND

The Cobb

Page 13: Lyme Regis

LY M E R E G I S . O R G 1 3

The iconic Cobb was built as a harbour to protect ships and to act as a breakwater to protect the town. Since the first drawing of the Cobb from the late 1500s, it has been extended in length and

height. It was connected to the mainland in 1756 and the North Wall was built in 1823.

The harbour is a hive of activity all-year-round. While commercial trawlers still operate from Lyme, visitors can find plenty to do, from crabbing in the harbour to fishing off the end of the Cobb. Fishing and boat trips operate regularly, with many of the local species on show at the Marine Aquarium.

At the thriving Boat Building Academy at Monmouth Beach, you can watch craftspeople at work using traditional methods. This is also the birthplace of Lyme Regis Gig Club’s 32ft-long Cornish pilot gigs.

Lyme Regis Power Boat Club can also be found at Monmouth Beach, hosting a variety of social events and national water ski racing events.

With some of the best sailing waters in the country, our Sailing Club welcomes visitors. Harbour facilities include 11 seasonal visitors’ moorings, a pontoon accessible at all states of the tide, and access to showers, fresh water and power on request.

The RNLI Lifeboat Station and shop is worth a visit to appreciate the importance of the charity’s lifesaving work.

The impressive new Church Cliff Walk has opened up the east of the town, providing better access to the fossil beach and rock pools, creating a direct link to the seafront from

the car park, and protecting the coastline from the ravages of the sea.

Lyme’s award-winning environmental improvements’ scheme is a remarkable feat of engineering and innovation. The pioneering project protects homes, roads and infrastructure from coastal erosion and landslips.

The remarkable new seawall, named Church Cliff Walk, was officially opened in June 2015, with a safe footpath link to Charmouth Road car park. Be aware there are 114 steps back up to the car park, but there are plenty of benches along the way and at the top to sit and enjoy the spectacular views across the bay.

The seawall provides easy access onto the fossil-rich East Beach and beyond to Charmouth, but beware of incoming tides and

always observe the Fossil Code. Information and safety panels can be found at beach access points.

A large ammonite unearthed by Lyme Regis Museum geologist Paddy Howe during construction can be found at the end of the walkway, set into the stone.

Church Cliff Walk has provided a convenient, wheelchair-accessible route to link the east and west of the town, bringing visitors closer to the stunning Jurassic coastline.

For the energetic, there’s always something to do on both land and sea. Walkers will find routes for all ages and abilities, and cyclists will be challenged by the hilly terrain. The sea is the focus of a wide range of activities, including swimming, fishing, sailing,

windsurfing, paddle-boarding and kayaking.

Hikers are catered for with strenuous walks to the east and west of Lyme, both with pubs at the end and the X53 bus service to bring you back from Chideock or Axmouth.

The seven-mile western walk leads through the Undercliff National Nature Reserve, while the eastern walk to Charmouth and beyond takes in the south coast’s highest point, Golden Cap.

Gentler walks can be found along the River Lym and into the surrounding countryside. History walks and ghost tours around Lyme offer an insight into the town’s past.

On the sea, fishing trips are available with local fishermen or in a hired boat, and beach-casting and pier fishing are also popular.

The sailing and power boat clubs welcome temporary members. Visitors can learn paddle-boarding, windsurfing, sailing and kayaking.

Mini golf and table tennis are available in Lister Gardens. The town’s golf and bowls’ clubs welcome visiting players.

There are active football and cricket clubs, with the Seasiders playing their home matches at Davey Fort, Charmouth Road, and Uplyme and Lyme Regis Cricket Club playing at King George V Field in Uplyme.

Lyme Regis is on the route of the Tour de Manche from Poole to Plymouth and from there, via ferry to St Malo.

Lyme has a feast of gastronomic delights to suit every taste, budget and occasion. The town has many specialist food shops, from delicatessens to bakeries, fine dining

restaurants and gastro-pubs, cafes and tea rooms serving cream teas and lunches, and fresh, local fish and chips.

A wide variety of restaurants awaits visitors to Lyme Regis. Locally-sourced, seasonal produce can be found on most menus, making the most of delicious fresh fish brought ashore from harbours along the south west coast, and ingredients supplied by local farms and butchers.

Visitors can eat fresh seafood while enjoying views across the bay, cosy up in an intimate Italian hideaway in the quieter side streets, and experience tastes of the world in Indian, Chinese and Thai restaurants and takeaways.

Lyme has its own celebrity chef, Mark Hix, whose seafood restaurant overlooks the bay.

No seaside town would be complete without fish and chips, best eaten in the open air, straight from the bag. Traditional tea rooms sit alongside modern coffee shops, and pubs serve bar snacks and meals, washed down with a local ale or cider.

Foodies can take a gastro tour of the town, picking up fresh bread and cakes, award-winning cheeses and local ale at the Town Mill complex. In Broad Street you will find an organic food shop and Dorset fudge, and at the Cobb a well-stocked wet fish shop.

NeighboursAs a gateway town to the Jurassic Coast, nestled in an Area of Outstanding Natural

Beauty, Lyme Regis is surrounded by many other pretty towns and villages along the coast of West Dorset and East Devon, and just inland are several bustling market towns.

C H A R M O U T HRenowned worldwide for its fossil beaches, this idyllic village to the east of Lyme boasts an ancient coastline of dramatic cliffs and beautiful scenery. The beach is safe for children as it shelves very gently, with low tide revealing wide expanses of sand and countless rockpools. The Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre is well worth a visit.

W E S T B AYDominated by the sandstone cliffs, West Bay is situated at the western end of Chesil Beach, offering large beaches and space to play. Crab fishing is popular in the harbour and marina, and a fun fair visits during peak season. The Jurassic Pier provides an excellent vantage point to view the coast from South Devon to Portland. The area was recently made famous as the setting for television crime drama Broadchurch.

A X M I N S T E RThe ancient market town of Axminster lies in the Axe Valley in south-east Devon, surrounded by stunning unspoilt countryside. The town has good rail links from Exeter and London, and convenient onward travel to the coast by bus. Most famous for its carpets, the town is also well-known as the home of celebrity chef and presenter Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s River Cottage Canteen and Deli.

B R I D P O R TA lively market town east of Lyme, Bridport has a vibrant and eclectic culture of events, art and entertainment, and an excellent reputation for quality local food. The town has a rich history as one of the leading rope and net producers in England, which accounts for its wide streets and abundance of listed buildings of historical or architectural merit related to the industry.

HISTORICAL

Lyme

Page 25: Lyme Regis

LY M E R E G I S . O R G 2 5

The town has enjoyed over 12 centuries of lively history, receiving its royal charter from Edward I in 1284, confirmed by Elizabeth I in 1591. For many years, Lyme was one of the south coast’s major trading ports and one of the country’s

largest towns with a population of 4,000.

Between 1500 and 1700 a vast array of goods passed through the town’s harbour, running the risk of pirates and smugglers.

Lyme gained a reputation for rebellion when in 1644, during the English Civil War, the town withstood an eight-week siege by Royalist forces. In 1685 the Duke of Monmouth landed on the west beach and started the ill-fated Monmouth Rebellion. The beach bears his name today.

Faced with a decline in trading, the town was re-invigorated in the 1750s with the discovery that coastal air and sea bathing was

an aid to health. Lyme’s fame grew in the early-1800s when it became the focus of the new science of palaeontology.

In more recent times, the town was home to the original Lassie. Following the sinking of HMS Formidable by German torpedoes on New Year’s Day, 1915 the survivors were taken to the Pilot Boat Inn. Those who died on the way were laid on the stone floor of the cellar, but the landlady’s collie Lassie licked the face of one of the victims and saved his life.

PA R K I N GPark and Ride There are two park and rides, which operate during busy times of the year. They are located on the A3052, on Sidmouth Road to the west and on Charmouth Road to the east.

Town Parking There is a small amount of short-stay parking at the bottom of Broad Street (DT7 3QD) and a larger car park (Woodmead) within easy walking distance of the town centre off Hill Road, adjacent to the Police Station (DT7 3HN).

There is also a NCP towards the top of Broad Street (DT7 3QH).

Long-Stay There are two long-stay car parks in Lyme Regis. One is on Charmouth Road (DT7 3DW) to the east, and the other is Holmbush car park on Sidmouth Road (DT7 3LD) to the west. Both car parks are within walking distance of the town centre and seafront, although there are some hills to contend with.

Seafront Parking Monmouth Beach and Cabanya car parks are located at the Cobb end of the seafront and are very convenient for the beaches and harbour (DT7 3JJ). These car parks are more expensive for longer stays.

Pay for parking with RingGo For the Woodmead, Cabanya and Monmouth Beach car parks you can now pay to park using your mobile through RingGo. Visit www.myringgo.co.uk for more information.

B E A C H H U T SVisitors to Lyme Regis cannot fail to notice the line of pretty pastel-coloured beach huts along the seafront. The town council owns a number of these beach huts and they are available to hire on a daily, weekly or seasonal basis throughout the year.
