TECHNICAL DETAILSLOCATIONThe discovery of a cinerary urn of IIIth century with a latin inscription has confirmed the hypothesis of a settlement in the Roman age but this presence has been not definitely proven. The burgh, known as Pescino, was devasted by Rothari in 641 and by the Saracens in the 10th century. Later it was a fief of the Fieschi family until 1229, when it was acquired by the Republic of Genoa. From the Middle Age the built-up area was divided in two suburb: Pescino and Corte. In 1798 the



territory was divided in two cantons: the Canton of S.Margherita where two towns council of S.Siro and S.Lorenzo della Costa were submitted and the Canton of S.Giacomo with the town council of Nozarego and Portofino . The relations between the two villages cracked with battles. In 1799 the towns council of S.Siro, S. Lorenzo, Nozarego and Portofino were suppressed incorporating this villages in the town council of Santa Margherita and S. Giacomo. In 1813, under the Napoleonic domination, the two burghs of Pescino and Corte were unified as Porto Napoleone. Two years later it was annexed to the Kingdom of Sardinia as the commune of Santa Margherita Ligure. In 1861 it became part of the newly unified Kingdom of Italy . Connected by rail in the 20th century, Santa Margherita had become a renowned tourist resort after World War II.
