Luther and Bach – Expressing Faith through Music

As the former residence of Martin Luther and birthplace of Johann Sebastian Bach, Eisenach is the ideal location for exploring the connections between theology and music during this 6-day tour.

Martin Luther said: “Next to the Word of God, the noble art of music is the greatest treasure in the world.” With his “singing and telling“ doctrine, Luther was the first person in church history to put music on the same level as theology.

Although separated by 200 years of history, Luther and Bach both grew up in Eisenach; Bach even set many of Luther’s hymns to music. Following Luther’s example, Bach understood music as a form of praise and medium for spreading the Word of God. Encounter two giants of history in authentic places where they changed the course of history and discover the many connections they share.

Two Sides of the Same Coin – Martin Luther & Thomas Muentzer

Luther and Thomas Müntzer were two contemporaries who fought for the Reformation in very different ways. This 6-day tour stops at cities that played stage to the events of those turbulent years.

Luther and Muentzer each supported reform within the church and a general questioning of authority. While Müntzer enjoyed Luther’s support for a time, Luther eventually broke all ties with him for using violence to accelerate societal change.

Müntzer went on to lead the historic German Peasant’s Revolt and was executed for his efforts. Despite their differences, both of these men played pivotal roles in shaping LutherCountry’s religious and cultural landscape. Tour highlights include Lutherstadt Wittenberg, where Luther introduced his 95 Theses, as well as Muehlhausen, Muentzer’s former center for radical reform.
