operations

allow

hosts

that

can

use

only

a

limited

amount

of

LUs

perfi

bre

interface

tohaveaccess to largeramountsofdatabyusingexpandedLUs.

LUSEFunction

LUNExpansion(LUSE) isafunctionforopensystems. Touse thisfunction,youneedthesoftwarecalled

Open VolumeManagement.

TheLUSE function isapplied toopen-system logicalvolumesandenablesyou toconfigureone large

logical

volume

by

combining

several

small

LDEVs.

The

LUSE

function

allows

hosts

that

can

use

only

a

limitednumberof logicalunits (LUs)perfibre interface tohaveaccess to largeramountsofdataby

using expanded LUs.

Figure1onpage 11 shows the LUSE configuration. ByusingtheLUSEfunction,youcancombineseveral

logical

devices

(LDEVs)

or

volumes

into

one

large

logical

volume.

The

size

of

the

confi

gured

LDEV

can

be

expandedupto36timesthesizeoftheoriginalLDEV.TheIDofthelogicalvolumedefinedasthelarge

logicalvolume isrepresentedby thesmallestLDEV ID(assigned to the topLDEV).Thehostrecognizes

theexpanded logicalvolumeasonerepresentativeLDEV. As longas thenumberofLDEVscombined

intoone large logicalvolumedoesnotexceed thespecified limit(seeTable2onpage12),youcan

arbitrarily

select

any

LDEVs

as

the

volumes

to

combine,

regardless

of

their

size

(or

capacity)

or

whether

ornot theyareon thesameCU(ControlUnit). TheLUSEfunctionalsoallowsyou tocombineseveralLDEVsandaLUSEvolume(combinedLDEVs) intooneLUSEvolumeorcombineLUSEvolumes togetherinto one

LUSE volume.

Before thehostcanaccesseachLDEVcomposinganexpandedLU (LUSEvolume),youmustrelease

the expanded LU.

Requirements

Note : To

use

the

LUSE

function,

you

need

the

software

called

change

the

capacity

of

LUSE

expand,

and thenadd

LDEVsorLUSEvolumes; orfirst select LDEVs or LUSE volumes that you want

to add, and then select a LUSE volume to be expanded. For further information, see

•  Reducing LUSEcapacities

You cannot reduce

the

capacity

of

an

existing

LUSE

volume.

If

you

want

a

LUSE

volume

to

have

a

smaller

capacity,

you

must

first

release

the

LUSE

volume

(see“Releasing a LUSE Volume” on page 27), and then redefine the LUSE volume (see

“Creating

a

LUSE

 Volume” on page 22).
